You may have become so used to them that you no longer notice, but snaking through downtown Indianapolis' northwest quadrant are the remains of a revolutionary public transit system that transported riders on elevated tracks 30-feet high. It was called the People Mover, developed for $44 million by Clarian Health Partners, the hospital system now known as Indiana University Health. From its launch in 2003 to 2019, it recorded roughly 6 million rider trips on a 1.4-mile track running between Methodist Hospital, University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children.  The People Mover had the cooperation of city officials, who allowed the track to use public right of way along Senate Avenue, West 11th Street and University Boulevard. And the People Mover was filled with promise, as some predicted it could be expanded to a larger public transit system that would include Indianapolis International Airport. But tram came to screeching halt in 2019, when IU Health said it would begin offering shuttle buses instead and expected to save about $40 million over 10 years. That also was about the time IU Health began planning a massive facility consolidation and modernization project downtown. IBJ reporter Daniel Lee has a personal connection to the People Mover and recently began looking into what remains of the twin-track system and whether IU Health has any plans to resurrect it. In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, Lee also gauges support for a proposal that would transform the infrastructure into an elevated trail celebrating the heritage of Black communities on downtown's northwest side.

Minister Jack Chambers is launching 'Guidelines for the Responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in the Public Service'. Artificial Intelligence is changing how we live, work, and engage with the world around us. Governments worldwide face the challenge of meeting the digital expectations of their end-users while keeping pace with advancements in technology. These Guidelines compliment and inform strategies regarding the adoption of innovative technology and ways of working already underway in the public service, and seek to set a high standard for public service transformation and innovation, while prioritising public trust and people's rights. The Guidelines have been developed to actively empower public servants to use AI in the delivery of services. By firmly placing the human in the process, these guidelines aim to enhance public trust in how Government uses AI. A range of resources designed to support the adoption of AI have been developed, including clear information on Government's Principles for Responsible AI, a Decision Framework for evaluating the potential use of AI, a Responsible AI Canvas Tool to be used at planning stage, and the AI Lifecycle Guidance tool. Other government supports available to public service organisations also include learning and development materials and courses for public servants at no cost. In this regard, and in addition to its existing offering on AI, the Institute for Public Administration will provide a tutorial and in-person training dedicated to the AI Guidelines to further assist participants in applying the guidelines in their own workplaces. The guidelines contain examples of how AI is already being used across public services, including: St. Vincent's University Hospital exploring the potential for AI to assist with performing heart ultrasound scans, in order to help reduce waiting times for patients. The Revenue Commissioners using Large Language Models to route taxpayer queries more efficiently, ensuring faster and more accurate responses. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine developing an AI-supported solution to detect errors in grant applications and reduce processing times for applications. Minister Jack Chambers said: "AI offers immense possibilities to improve the provision of public services. These guidelines support public service bodies in undertaking responsible innovation in a way that is practical, helpful and easy to follow. "In keeping with Government's AI strategy, the guidance as well as the learning and development supports being offered by the Institute for Public Administration, will help public servants to pursue those opportunities in a way that is responsible. "AI is already transforming our world and it is crucial that we embrace that change and adapt quickly in order to deliver better policy and better public services for the people of Ireland." Minister of State for Public Procurement, Digitalisation and eGovernment, Emer Higgins said: "AI holds the potential to revolutionise how we deliver services, make decisions, and respond to the needs of our people. These guidelines will support thoughtful integration of AI into our public systems, enhance efficiency, and reduce administrative burdens and financial cost. Importantly, this will be done with strong ethical and human oversight, ensuring fairness, transparency, accountability, and the protection of rights and personal data at every step." Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation, Niamh Smyth said: "Government is committed to leveraging the potential of AI for unlocking productivity, addressing societal challenges, and delivering enhanced services. The guidelines launched today are part of a whole of government approach to putting in place the necessary enablers to underpin responsible and impactful AI adoption across the public service. They are an important step in meeting government's objective of better outcomes through AI adopti...

Porsche Taycan EV explosion claims 2 lives in car park

Two firefighters have died, one is seriously injured, and another thirteen were injured less seriously, when a Porsche Taycan electric sports car crashed and exploded around 4pm on Wednesday, in an underground car park in Madrid. In other news, despite mounting evidence of the danger, there's still no plan to mitigate the risk posed by EVs among us. If you think there's any kind of risk management plan in place here in ‘Straya, I'll be auctioning off the Harbour Bridge this weekend. This is your opportunity to score an historic piece of an internationally recognised ‘Strayan icon, dude. What appears to have happened in this tragedy is:"According to eyewitness accounts, the fire began when a resident, identified only as Javier, attempted to park his electric Porsche Taycan. Reports suggest that he may have confused the accelerator with the brake, crashing into the garage entrance and causing the vehicle to emit thick smoke and flames."That's from the Pinnacle Gazatte in Spain. “Confused the accelerator and the brake”: Yeah. Sounds like the the Porsche owner."Initial hypotheses suggest that the first of the deceased firefighters was caught in a blast that affected several parked cars. This large-scale explosion was allegedly caused by a fire in an electric car which had crashed when its owner was driving it into the garage. The second firefighter died from the inhalation of fumes while he was being transferred to the University Hospital of Getafe. All the injured and deceased were members of the Alcorcón fire brigade."Lobby groups and other arsehole EV advocates will not allow any speed humps on the superhighway to Electric Utopia, with its tantalising pot of ‘net zero' at the end of the rainbow. Speed humps such as reasonable safety measures.Apparently, the safety of the public, and of firefighters, is not as important as looking good to other unhinged climate zealots who never studied.

Sarah tells Nuala about the research and what they've found about preterm birth. Once the Deed is Done is the fifth novel from the German-British author Rachel Seiffert. It covers the immediate aftermath of the end of WW2 and the fall of Nazi Germany. Montelukast Improves Retinal Health in Aging Mice

BUFFALO, NY — March 25, 2025 — A new #research paper was #published in Aging (Aging-US) on January 31, 2025, in Volume 17, Issue 2, titled “Cysteinyl leukotriene receptor 1 modulates retinal immune cells, vascularity and proteolytic activity in aged mice.” The study, led by first author and corresponding author Andreas Koller from the University Hospital of the Paracelsus Medical University, found that blocking an inflammatory receptor called CysLTR1 in the retinas of aging mice improved retinal health. These findings suggest a new approach to slowing age-related vision loss and protecting eye health in older adults. Age-related vision problems are a growing concern worldwide, and inflammation plays a key role in damaging the retina over time. The retina is the part of the eye that captures light and sends visual signals to the brain, making it vital for clear eyesight. In this study, scientists focused on the CysLTR1 receptor, which is known to promote inflammation and is found in high amounts in the retina. They explored whether blocking this receptor could reduce the harmful effects of aging in the eye. To achieve this, researchers treated aged mice with montelukast (MTK), a drug commonly used for asthma, which specifically blocks CysLTR1. The oral treatment lasted eight weeks and results were compared with both untreated aged mice and healthy young mice. After treatment, the older mice showed major improvements in retinal health. One key finding was a reduction in immune cells called microglia, which tend to increase with age and contribute to chronic inflammation in the retina. With CysLTR1 blocked, the number of these immune cells dropped significantly, suggesting reduced retinal inflammation. Lower inflammation is linked to a lower risk of age-related eye diseases like macular degeneration. “The reduction in immune cells caused by Cysltr1 suppression may dampen neuroinflammation, a known promoter of tissue aging.” Another important result was the restoration of blood vessel function. The tiny blood vessels in the retina had narrowed in aging mice, reducing blood flow and oxygen supply to the eye. MTK treatment increased the diameter of these vessels, improving circulation and possibly helping the retina work more efficiently. The study also indicated that blocking CysLTR1 helped boost the retina's natural ability to clear out waste proteins. As we age, this cleaning process slows down, allowing harmful material to build up in the eye. After treatment, the aged mice had stronger proteasome activity—the system responsible for breaking down cellular waste—and fewer signs of waste accumulation. Importantly, the treatment did not harm retinal nerve cells, which are essential for vision. This evidence indicates that the therapy was not only effective but also safe. While more research is needed to confirm these results in humans, this study highlights the potential of repurposing MTK to protect against age-related vision decline. Because it is already an approved drug, testing it for age-related eye diseases like macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy could move forward more quickly. Blocking inflammation and supporting the eye's natural cleaning systems may be a promising new way to preserve healthy vision in aging populations.
