Will Wesley and Florian Fox Live At Luckenbach.Take a walk with me down Fascination Street, as I traveled 30 minutes from my house to Luckenbach, Texas to see previous guest of the show Will Wesley perform with his buddy Florian Fox. When Will was on the show last time, he mentioned that he & Florian would be playing Luckenbach a few months from then. So, true to his word, Will reached out to me as the date got nearer, and once again invited me to come see the show, and record another episode. This time, he introduced me to his good friend and tour mate, Florian Fox. Florian is a country singer all the way from Zurich, Switzerland! When Florian is in the U.S., he and Will tour together. When Will is in Switzerland, he and Florian tour together. What a great partnership! So my wife and I went to see them play together at The Thomas Michael Riley Music Festival, live at Luckenbach, Texas! My wife and I had never been there before, and this was one hell of a reason to go. In this episode, we get to know Florian, and how he was introduced to, and fell in love with country music. The two of them share the story of how they met, and why they instantly took a liking to each other. They share some tour stories, they explain why their different musical styles work well together, and they talk about some of the similarities in their music. Naturally, they wrote a song together, and they both graciously agree to let me play it! Both of these great country artists play across America, as well as across Switzerland and Europe. If you ever have the chance to see either, or both of them, DO IT! These gentlemen are a ton of fun to talk to and listen to! ******This episode was recorded LIVE at an outdoor music festival during a torrential rainstorm. I cleaned up the audio as good as I could, I hope you enjoy the episode!*****

Today we'll cover how its insignificance makes it so great; the glory days of Luckenbach and what remains in their place; the song that made Luckenbach and killed it at the same time; and a game of dominoes to which no one was invited and everyone came to watch anyway.Check out Hal on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@halhammons9705Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. The #1 way you can support The Troubadour is by visiting our Patreon page It's Monday, July 8th, 2024 and this is an episode I've been excited about since we got it scheduled.  In January of 2024, Americana band Mike and the Moonpies officially announced they were changing the name of their band to Silverada.  Their brand new self-titled record just came out and it's got some bangers on it.  Silverada is fresh off of an album release party at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and their upcoming tour schedule is insane!  For example, this coming Friday and Saturday nights they are playing at Billy Bob's and Gruene Hall respectively.  And in the next few months they've got dates everywhere from Washington, D.C. to Seattle and from Milwaukee, WI to Luckenbach, TX, and just about everywhere in between. Frontman Mike Harmier tells us about some new songwriting techniques he employed for this new record and some of you songwriters out there might just have some new tools to put in your bag. So, here we go with Episode 194 of the Troubadour featuring Mike Harmier of Silverada! I've completed more than 100 books thus far in 2024 — a bit behind my pace from 2023, but still, not too bad.  And yes, some of those books were on the short side. But not all — I've read six books this year that were 500 pages or longer. I try to balance my reading between fiction, non-fiction and inspirational books. Fiction is lagging behind in 2024, which no doubt accounts for its poor representation here. And my inspirational reading has been a bit underwhelming. But I've been on a tear recently; I read half the books on this list in the last month.   Anyway, I hope my reading habits will encourage you to read more — and especially, read with a view of improving your ability to function as a Christian in an ungodly environment. 10. The latest offering from Stephanie Urbina Jones & The Honky Tonk Mariachi, Manuel's Destiny, goes far beyond the limits of the typical album: it's a saga, a joyride, an impassioned reclamation of her cultural heritage, and—above all—a riveting tribute to the power of a dream to travel over 100 years and three generations. From her great-grandfather crossing the border, to an artist living and telling a transcendent story, and ultimately living Manuel's Destiny. Over the course of 11 wildly dazzling songs, the Texas-bred, Nashville/Mexico-based singer/songwriter sets her storytelling to a one-of-a-kind sound she's created and calls “Honky Tonk Mariachi”—a gorgeously orchestrated fusion of her Mexican roots and San Antonio, TX Hill Country upbringing, centered in the stunning vocal prowess she's shown in touring across the globe, sharing the stage with legends like Willie Nelson, and making history as the first artist ever to perform with mariachi at the Grand Ole Opry. The result is the most revelatory work yet from a truly visionary artist, one that leaves the listener newly emboldened to fearlessly follow their hearts and live a dreamer's tale. For Urbina Jones, the making of such an ambitious and all-encompassing album took decades of soul-searching and careful excavation of her family's history. Originally from San Antonio, she spent much of her early childhood at backyard barbecues at the home of her paternal grandmother, where she first heard the traditional Mexican music, she now describes as “a transmission of pure joy and love.” When her parents divorced, Jones moved to a small town in Texas, and as a young girl, frequented local honky-tonks, two-stepping to songs by all the country greats and listening to poets like Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, and Townes Van Zant carve out songs by the potbelly stove in Luckenbach, TX. (“Margie the bartender was my babysitter. I got to put the sawdust on the floors,” she recalls). But despite her many happy memories, that period of Urbina Jones' life also carried a heavy burden of pain. “After I was pulled away from my father, I was told to hide the fact that I was Mexican, which haunted me for a very long time,” she says. At age 18, however, Urbina Jones made her first trip to Mexico (accompanied by her father) and immediately felt a profound sense of revelation. “I fell madly in love with my culture—the people, the music, the food,” she says. “I finally realized, ‘This is who I am.' From this moment on, the direction of my life changed. I became passionate about telling a new story celebrating my roots. My pain turned into my passion and purpose.” As she unraveled her family's history, Urbina Jones learned of her great-grandfather, Manuel Anaya Urbina: a Mapimí, Hidalgo, Mexico native who went to the Vatican to study for the priesthood in the late 1800s. After two years in Rome, he rejected his childhood religion. “He returned to Mexico and crossed into El Paso in 1907— left his country, left his family, left his faith, left everything to embark on a new life for his own personal freedom,” she says. “He ended up becoming the first Mexican Baptist minister in San Antonio and spread the gospel all over the Southwest. Once I discovered his story, I became passionate about the idea of this dreamer crossing the border to follow his heart. I feel as if his dream has lived on through me, and now I want to share it as a source of inspiration for anyone seeking their own divine truth.” The follow-up to 2018's Tularosa (a powerhouse album stacked with mariachi-infused covers of country classics like “Ring of Fire” and “Jolene”), Manuel's Destiny finds Urbina Jones moving forward with her mission of introducing audiences everywhere to the unbridled passion and heart of Mexico. “As a little girl growing up listening to mariachi, the joyful sound of their voices singing together always felt like an instrument in itself, and I knew from the start that I wanted that to be woven into every song on this album,” she says. Produced by Urbina Jones and Preston Sullivan, and recorded live at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas—not far from where her great-grandfather crossed into El Paso—Manuel's Destiny achieves its lush and fiery sound thanks to contributions from over a dozen musicians, including guitarrón player Mike Hernandez (also the album's mariachi session leader), Urbina Jones' bandleader/longtime guitarist Patterson Barrett, and a lineup of esteemed mariachi players from all over Texas, Nashville, Los Angeles, and Mexico. With its resplendent selection of heart-on-sleeve ballads, hip-swinging Texican Americana anthems, and pedal steel-laced country- rock songs, Manuel's Destiny ultimately radiates an electrifying energy, adding even greater impact to the countless pieces of wisdom woven into her lyrics. In many ways a document of Urbina Jones' own whirlwind adventures in fulfilling her life's purpose, Manuel's Destiny opens on “Gypsy Dreams”—a fierce yet euphoric refusal to tame her free-spirited nature. “It took me a long time to honor who I was born to be — an artist, a dreamer and author of my own life. I'm gratefully reclaiming and sharing my joy with the world,” says Urbina Jones. Ever since she was a little girl, she's always been this way. You can be part of her world, but you can never make her change. (“Gypsy Dreams”) On the album's cinematic title track, meanwhile, Urbina Jones opens by recounting her great-grandfather's pilgrimage to the States in search of his truth and divinity, then looks back on her own leap of faith in leaving home to follow her heart and one day live the spellbinding epic, which is “Manuel's Destiny:” I got in my car with my Spanish guitar bound for Tennessee, As I drove through my fear, I felt his spirit near guiding me, I was strong, I was able, I waited on tables, said yes sir, no m'am, cause I knew I'd get the chance for my dreams to dance and do what I was born to do. Wendy Moten, a multi-talented Memphis-born singer, and another dreamer whose voice and career path are like no other, joins in for a triumphant update of Glen Campbell's iconic “Rhinestone Cowboy” (with a blessing from songwriter Larry Weiss on the cover's gender flip). Built on a near-symphonic arrangement of soaring violins, exultant trumpets, vihuela, and heavenly harp, “Rhinestone Cowgirl” emerges as a powerful account of overcoming the odds on the way to unfettered glory. “Both Wendy and I have been relentless in becoming who we were destined to be,” says Urbina Jones. “The fact that a Latina and a Black woman are stepping into this moment and singing this classic song together is incredibly meaningful to me—we're representing all dreamers of all ages, from all backgrounds, and hopefully encouraging them to bravely answer the calling of their own hearts.” On songs like “Falling Fearlessly,” Manuel's Destiny slips into a “Blue Bayou” romantic mood and spotlights the subtler nuances of Urbina Jones' beguiling voice. Co-written with Peggy Lynn (daughter of Loretta Lynn), the lilting and luminous track finds music legend Vince Gill pairing up with Urbina Jones to capture the rarefied magic of surrendering to love. “We wrote the song on the beach under a full moon in Mexico,” Urbina Jones remembers. “It's my homage to Linda Ronstadt, who's one of the few Latinas I had to look up to in country rock music.” And on “The Queen of the Angels (La Reyna De Los Angeles)/Cielito Lindo” Urbina Jones delivers a cumbia country, dance-ready, infectious serenade to another influential woman in her life: her paternal grandmother, who guided her toward a daring new direction with her music. “When my abuelita was dying, she called me to her side and told me I was going to be a messenger who shared the beauty of our culture with the world by making what she called ‘country music with chili peppers,'” says Urbina Jones. “At the time, I didn't believe I could do it, but after she died, I went to San Miguel de Allende and began recovering that connection to my roots. It was the revolucíon en mi corazón.” The album also features a song with the Bellamy Brothers. A mash-up of “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)” and “Let Your Love Flow,” these two hit songs reflect a coming of age during Urbina Jones' early years. “I was lucky to grow up in Luckenbach and the honky tonks of Texas during the Outlaw movement. My favorite song to sing along to was “Let Your Love Flow,” comments Urbina Jones. “I had the honor of touring in Europe with the Bellamys and was thrilled they agreed to re-record their song with my Honky Tonk Mariachi,” she adds. Since first dreaming up the culture-blending, genre-bending, sublimely exuberant sound that now imbues her music, Urbina Jones has established herself as a two-time Amazon bestselling author and teacher who leads spiritual pilgrimages all over the world. A former student of Don Miguel Ruiz (a teacher in the Toltec tradition and author of the seminal Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom), she made her debut as a lead author with Shaman Heart: Turning Pain into Passion and Purpose, a 2022 title in which she details her experience in undoing her childhood pain and pursuing her true calling as an artist. In May 2023, Urbina Jones released her second bestselling book, Shaman Heart – Sacred Rebel. As she reveals that transformation was not without its daunting moments. “There was a reason to quit at every step along the way,” says Urbina Jones. “But every breakdown turned out to be a breakthrough, and the road kept miraculously rising up and meeting me every step of the way.” For the closing track to Manuel's Destiny, Urbina Jones chose a solo self-penned song called “Until We Meet Again”— a soul-stirring number that's equal parts full-hearted farewell, and loving acknowledgment of the way dreams endure from generation to generation. In a poignant symbol of that very phenomenon, Jones arrived at Sonic Ranch carrying the same Bible from 1876 that her great-grandfather had held upon crossing into the U.S. more than a century ago. “It's amazing to me that over a hundred years later, Manuel's great-granddaughter could come back to the same border with the same Bible, a seed of the dream he planted from so long ago,” she says. “It tells me that our dreams are by divine design. I hope that in sharing this album I'm able to bring a little joy, big magic, and some dancing to the world, as well as inspire someone to ask the big questions—to be brave, believe in themselves, and in their dreams. Within our hearts lies the map to our destiny.”

We caught up with Darwin out at his Garage where we saw all his awesome projects. Darwin who loved cars since a small boy told us that it is just a passion he has, and it only grew as he got older. Darwin has a little shop here in his small town for working on and repairing  his neighbors cars. I met Darwin back when we were justing getting the Magazine off the ground. We were out at a show in Luckenbach, Texas where I first saw his car and asked if I could shoot it for my front cover. I was ready to shoot it that day but with it being a car show there were many things that would keep getting in the way. We both decided that I would come East Texas a couple days after the show. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Today is Sunday, April 16th, 2023 and I'm probably more excited about releasing this episode than almost any other I've ever been able to record up to this point in my journey as a podcaster.    This episode marks a full-circle moment in my life of music so indulge me for just a second while I take you down memory lane a bit.  On July 4th, 1999 I was a twenty year-old wannabe musician.  Several college friends and I had made the trek from North Central Kansas all the way to Luckenbach, TX for Willie Nelson's 4th of July picnic.    That day I got to see many well-known and legendary musicians, and most of them for the first time in my life.    But about 4pm on that hot hill-country Texas day, an absolute freak of a guitar player took the stage.  What I witnessed over the next 20 minutes or so left me with my mouth gaping wide open.  That was the first time I'd even heard the name Monte Montgomery, but I knew what I was witnessing was other-worldly; it was almost like seeing something from a different dimension.  What Monte could do on an acoustic guitar seemed unhuman.  His ability was incredible but the sounds he could get out of that guitar we're unlike any I've ever heard.  I've been a big fan of Monte's ever since then and today, nearly 25 years after seeing him play that first time, Monte Montgomery is our guest today on The Troubadour.   As you'll hear in the interview, Monte has an interesting backstory from picking up a guitar for the first time when he was about 13 years old, to now, being known throughout the world as one of the best acoustic guitar players alive today.  Guitar Player Magazine named him as one their “Top 50 All-Time Greatest Guitar Players” and he can often be seen sharing a stage with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel or playing All-Star Guitar Player showcases at NAMM.  Fact is, he'll be playing on May 5th at the Dallas International Guitar Festival.  He can often be seen at the legendary Saxon Pub in Austin and for our Oklahoma listeners, Monte will be doing a two night stand at The Blue Door in Oklahoma City on May 12th and 13th.   Links for everything and some embedded YouTube videos of Monte shredding his Alvarez can be found in the show notes for this episode at thetroubadourpodcast.com   And also, if you can find it in your heart to throw Carly and I a bone, we would love to have you sign up as a supporter on our Patreon page so we can continue to bring you interviews with these great artists like Monte.  You can sign up for as little as $3.00 per month and we'll even send you some podcast swag for doing so  So take action now and go check the “Support The Podcast” tab at thetroubadourpodcast.com.   So let's get into it!  Here comes Episode #172 of The Troubadour and our visit with one of the greatest guitar players to ever live, Monte Montgomery.

He lived on to pioneer the Outlaw Country movement. And along with Willie, his wife Jessi Colter and Tompall Glaser was featured on country music's first platinum album, "Wanted! The Outlaws." He was the Balladeer for The Dukes of Hazzard TV show. And later Waylon part of the country supergroup The Highwaymen with Willie, Kris Kristofferson, and the man in black Johnny Cash. Thanks for joining us here on tiny curations. How are you doing today? Great seeing you this week at your store and chatting with you. Like many men my age, I loved Dukes of Hazzard! Watched it every Friday night following the show that my parent's would watch, Dallas. I had a little 33 record of Waylon singing the "Theme From The Dukes Of Hazzard - Just Good Ole Boys". I would place the needle on that record and time it to the TV show when is started and let the record play along with Waylon Jennings as The Balladeer. Even had the now Vintage 1982 Holy Grail of Power Cycles, the Dukes Of Hazzard General Lee Big Wheel from Coleco complete with the stars and bars and all. Although I was only able to see the man live in concert once at the Willie's 4th of July Picnic in Luckenbach in 1996 with Willie, Waylon and the Boys. Your brother along with his music made a big impression and me and so many others. James, I've met you before at your Waymore's Liquor Store and then again this past Monday, right there in your hometown of Littlefield, TX, just West of Lubbock near the panhandle. You were so kind and gracious to show my family around your store and what is the only Waylon Jennings museum in existence in the back your Waymore's Package Store. How did that come about, why did you start the Waylon museum there in Littlefield? The store is located 30 minutes West of Lubbock, in the small town of Littlefield, smack dab in the middle of town sits Waymore's Liquor Store and Waylon Jennings Museum at 901 Hall Ave Littlefield, TX 79339. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tiny-curations/message

Today's guest grew up in El Paso, Texas where, in his own words, “the desert southwest and the mountains of southern New Mexico left an indelible impression on his soul.” The recipient of six Texas Music Awards, including "Song of the Year" for the title cut on his album “Find Your Shine” he was also a New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 2000. It was 2013 when I first became fully immersed in the Texas Music scene while recording an early Mister Radio episode at the Picker Circle in Luckenbach, Texas, then I finally understood why many critics say that all the best singer songwriters come from Texas, in fact one reviewer for Americana magazine, when writing about my guest, stated that “some may argue against this fact but it's true; the dissenters are wrong. Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Willie Nelson, the names go on, and now there's one more to add to the list...Kevin Higgins.” It is my honor to introduce today's guest, Kevin Higgins.

Hill Country Motorheads, LLC is a vintage motorcycle museum located in Burnet, Texas – the “Bluebonnet Capital of Texas” in the beautiful Texas Hill Country and Highland Lakes area, just north of Austin. Hill Country Motorheads joins just a handful of motorcycle museums operating in Texas and displays over 7000 square feet of vintage Street Bikes, Motocrossers, Trials, Flat Trackers, Drag Racers, Choppers, other genres of motorcycles and memorabilia mostly from the 1960’s – 1980’s. For the Harley diehards, we do have some cool old HD’s to enjoy! Hill Country Motorheads is not your typical antique motorcycle museum. With over 200 motorcycles in the collection, the museum regularly showcases more than 70 bikes of many brands from around the world. Some pre-60’s bikes are on display and we welcome consignments if they are suitable to the museum theme. While you’re here, relax in the Man Cave, play some pool, watch the big screen TV and enjoy all the memorabilia on the walls and vintage bikes scattered throughout the facility. There is plenty of paved parking for all sizes of vehicles, trailers and bikes. The museum is pet friendly but all pets must be on leash while on the museum property. Hill Country Motorheads is also a great “destination ride and drive” and is located in close proximity to Luckenbach, Llano, Austin, Fredericksburg, San Antonio and the famous and challenging “Twisted Sisters” highways. Owners Pat & Janell Hanlon invite you to come spend some time at the museum to take a walk through time and experience the “history of the best days of motorcycling” . I Been To Georgia On A Fast Train”. Escuchar audio

Luckenbach , Texas is hunkered between South Grape Creek and Snail Creek on the south side of Ranch to Market Road 1376, and a mere 13 miles from Fredericksburg . It was Waylon Jennings’ tune "Back to the Basics of Love" that put Luckenbach on the map. In the early days of the 20 th century, Luckenbach was a thriving little town with close to 500 residents, but by the 1960s it claimed just three residents. That’s when the legendary Hondo Crouch and his partner bought the ghost town and started a dance hall and pub.

The Fightin' Side of Me". THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

In the late 1990s, Texas Country Music Stalwart, Josh Grider, made his way from Las Cruces, New Mexico to Luckenbach, TX for one of Willie Nelson’s “4th of July Picnics”.  The experience opened his horizons to what was out there for aspiring singers and songwriters beyond what could be heard on nationwide country radio at the time.  Josh mentions seeing some notables for the first time including Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Cory Morrow and others and how it changed his outlook as to what just may be attainable in the music business. Josh initially moved to Waco, TX to attend college at Baylor University where he started his first band, “Riverside”.  After graduation, Josh moved to Austin to focus more on his music and he released his first project in 2005. In 2011, Josh moved to Nashville after earning a publishing deal and began working with producer and fellow Texan, Trent Wilmon.  During this time Josh explains he learned a huge deal about the amount of creativeness that exists in the city of Nashville and just how many hard-working songwriters are cranking out new songs there on a daily basis. Although Josh ended up moving back to Texas where he’s now raising a family, he still commutes to Nashville for meetings and writing appointments because as he states, it IS Music City USA.  Additionally, for those like Josh (and yours truly), if your goal is to eventually have a song picked up and cut by a major artist, working in that town is nearly a must. So, sit back and enjoy this interview with a guy who has one of the smoothest baritone voices in the scene: Josh Grider. https://www.joshgrider.com/ Don’t forget about the upcoming 610 Music Festival.  For more information you can go to: 610 Music Festival on Facebook.  For tickets click HERE! Close your eyes for a moment and think of the face of homelessness. What is the face that you see? Is that person male or female, white or black, young or old. Or maybe the person some where in between these choices? For Corina Luckenbach and Melanie Granger, the faces of homelessness that they saw when they closed their eyes were very much like them: young, female and surrounded by taboos. Out of this space, Corina and Melanie hatched an audacious plan to raise One Million Tampons for Seattle’s homeless women. In the process they have garnered the support and attention of people from around the world and have recast the face of who is homeless in the city’s collective consciousness. One recent morning, as the breakfast rush trickled away, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Melanie and Corina at West Seattle’s Admiral Bird café to talk about their project. We started our conversation talking about the origins of the One Million Tampons campaign. To give to the campaign, please find a link to the One Million Tampons Amazon list here.

This week our family has been dealing with a canine issue. Our furry nephew, my brother’s dog, has injured his back. The veterinarian says that surgery is the only way to fix the problem. My brother immediately called me to see if I had any knowledge on the subject of back injuries in dogs, and sadly I didn’t have much to tell him. However, I knew someone that could help! Lisa Luckenback is the creator of the Wiggleless Back Brace for Dogs. When my brother called, I quickly realized that back issues in dogs are something that we don’t typically educate ourselves about until we’re faced with the problem. Sadly, they are more common than most pet owners realize, and we should really know the signs and symptoms in advance. This week Lisa agreed to speak with me about back issues in dogs and tell us a little bit about why she created the Wiggleless back brace. She also explains why this brace is so unique. In this week’s podcast, Lisa shares her knowledge of common back injuries and which breeds are most susceptible to back problems.
