2021 Ballpark Digest Awards season continues with a chat with the Baltimore Orioles' Melanie Newman, our MLB broadcaster of the year! In this episode we discuss Newman's history-making career in MLB and MiLB broadcasting as well as reporting on other sports.  Her background includes work both as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports Southwest and  play-by-play announcer for the Frisco RoughRiders and the Salem Red Sox. Along the way she made some history when she teamed up with Suzie Cool to form the first all-female broadcast team in professional baseball on a Salem Red Sox broadcast in 2019.She then was part of two more important events in 2021, become part of the first all-female crew to call an MLB game, as she called the action with Sarah Langs, Alanna Rizzo, Heidi Watney and Lauren Gardner on a YouTube broadcast on July 21. She followed that up by teaming up with analyst Jessica Mendoza to call a game on ESPN on Sept. 29.Joining the Baltimore Orioles for the 2020 season, she has yet to experience what anyone would call a "normal" season: she made her O's debut on August 4, 2020, and in 2021 she called all the Orioles games--but called many of them at home when the team was on the road. Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and author of The Baseball Thesaurus and the upcoming second edition of The Football Thesaurus, both from August Publications. Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2019 35:50

Sometimes finding your fit in the sports industry requires you to figure out what you don't like before you figure out what you do like. Andrew Sidney of the Houston Rockets explains in this weeks Work in Sports podcast.Hi, everybody, I'm Brian Clapp Director of content for WorkinSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast.A few weeks back on our little program I mentioned the idea of having a company first attitude towards job seeking. We all so often look for roles that fit our skill set, which makes sense, and is still a logical way to search, but I also espouse the benefits of looking at the companies that fit you, your personality and your career goals -- even better, when they have a reputation for training and developing staff.Think of it this way -- your fit, early in your career, matters for your overall ceiling. Would David Carr, #1 draft pick of the expansion Houston Texans in the 2002 draft been a more successful player if he hadn't gone to an expansion team and get 249 times over his first 4 years in the league?Would Tom Brady have been as successful if he hadn't landed under Bill Belichick and played in one system his entire career?Would Devin Booker be a household name if he wasn't putting up huge numbers for a terrible team in Phoenix?  Your fit matters. Athletes don't have a choice, you do. I know it's idealistic when you are first starting out to think you can demand anything, or be selective in your roles. We are all guided by fear and when you are job searching you tend to go wherever someone is interested in you. But, consider for a second, how important culture and role and development and training really are to your future. I started out at CNN/Sports Illustrated and I look at that like I was getting my Masters from the experts in journalism. That was a perfect fit for me and set me up for every success I have had.If I took another offer, at a small station in the midwest, I may have toiled there and never really took off in my career. I may never have developed a profile, or really enhanced my skills.I remember starting at CNN and we had a few weeks of training before we did a damn thing. That was the best possible thing that could have happened to me. It made me comfortable, and it set me up to succeed.I was watching Bar Rescue the other day, yeah I watch some bad TV I'm sure you do too, but anyway, they were talking about national food chains, your Chili's and Applebee's and the training they put all of their servers through. The steps of service I think they called it.They take the effort to train their employees so their customers get an expected level of service and come back again and again. What does this have to do with sports jobs?Well, it's simple, when you begin to isolate organizations you really want to work for, part of your research should be into their training and their culture. How much effort do they put into making their employees the best they can be?Today's guest Andrew Sidney, Houston Rockets Director of Group and Inside Sales, spent 5 years with the Frisco RoughRiders, double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. And as Andrew will tell you, they were dedicated to training staff, teaching them best practices, how to operate, and how to succeed. They set their staff up with apartments in the area, and clearly cared about their development. That is what you are looking for in your first jobs and internships. An organization that sees you as more than a means to an end, an opportunity to solve their problems -- you want to be part of an organization that will help you develop and learn.  Take a note out of John Elway's playbook -- the top-rated player in the 1983 draft, Elway was going to be drafted by the woebegone Colts and basically say “no” Forcing a trade to the Broncos.Had he not invested in himself and his future, spurning the Colts for the more established Broncos, who knows if we ever would have known and seen the superstar he became. Value yourself,

How do you craft a resume to stand out in the sports industry? That's easy, listen to this podcast episode.Hey, everybody, I'm Brian Clapp Director of Content for WorkInSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast.Coming up later this week on the Pod, Andrew Sidney Houston Rockets Director of Group and Inside Sales… just conducted this interview late last week and it was awesome. Andrew has a cool background, interned with 3 different minor league teams while in college - dabbled in PR, operations, coaching...ended up getting a sales job with the Frisco RoughRiders and loved it, has never looked back and now just 10 years into his career he's an executive with an NBA team. More on his story coming up on Wednesday...tune in for that. But today...it's a fan question! I love Mondays, maybe it's my ego because in these episodes I get to talk a lot more, on the Wednesday's I have to consciously tell myself to shut up and let them talk...but on Monday it's all me, baby!So let's check the question for today -- it comes in from Bradley in San Diego… Bradley what would you like to know?Hi, Brian, this is Bradley -- I've been really focused on your tips for creating great resume lately since I'm not sure mine is up to quality yet. You mentioned the importance of metrics having data in your resume to prove you are capable of making a tangible difference, but what else can you share...any new ideas or concepts that can help us stand out for the right reasons?Bradley, it's a good question - I admit I don't do a ton of resume advice for a couple of reasons. 1: It's such a subjective thing -- every person reading your resume is going to have a different style they are looking for, or content they seek, or format. So for me to provide advice that may or may not be right for that scenario freaks me out. I like to give advice that works, and I'm never sure resume advice is all that black and white. That said, there are best practices to follow, standards of operation, that we can lean into and follow. 2: The other reason I don't do a ton of resume advice is because I get tons of agitated feedback every time I talk resumes. When I talk about including metrics in your resume like “increased twitter followers by 23%” or “implemented a social media campaign that resulted in a 17% increase in revenue” or “created a mentorship program that resulted in 80% less turnover in 1st-year staff”...When I talk about this stuff, which is super powerful, and you should do immediately, I invariably get 100's of emails saying -- YEAH BUT, how do I do that for my career! My career doesn't have metrics. And then I spend the next 32 hours writing back to people telling them, yes it is, here's 3 examples...now you do the rest. See I'm a bit crazy and I respond to everyone, and next thing you know I'm in this black hole of responding to people's resume inquiries and proving them wrong that they can create metrics to measure performance, then I pull what's left of my hair out. And it's a viscious cycle. So, Bradley, for you, and for the sake of this podcast, I will venture into the resume waters again. Just don't hate mail me, people. I would also like to add that in the upcoming release of our online course, The Sports Career Game Plan, brought to you by yours truly and WorkinSports.com - for purchase soon on our site -- I have a whole course module on resumes, cover letters and personal branding. The course is bonkers, if you like this podcast you are in for a treat, and we're making it super cheap so everyone can get involved. Ok, back on track - let's talk new resume ideas. And new is relative. Let's say it's ideas that make sense and work.1: Start with your purpose. We're going squishy to start. Nothing black and white here, we're starting with tone and feeling! If you are somewhat lost and scrambled in your career goals and aspirations -- that will come through in your resume.  I've read resumes before and thought afterward -- I don't get this person.

Melanie Newman is just one of just five women calling play-by-play in professional baseball. Learn more about how she beat the odds and keeps pushing for more on the Work in Sports podcast!Hi everybody I'm Brian Clapp, Director of Content for WorkinSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast…I was struck this week by a response I received on our private facebook group for fans of this podcast. If you aren't a member of the podcast group, you should be, search for the work in sports podcast on facebook and join in.I posted in there that I wanted the serious people in the group to post their 2019 plans – all the steps they were going to take this year to reach their goals of working in the sports industry. I wanted them to post these plans, and then allow the rest of us to hold them accountable.Personally, I thought this was a great idea. Because I want everyone to take real steps, real action… not just a bunch of cheap talk. What are you going to do!If you are a student – what is your plan? What internships are you going to aim for, what events are you going to volunteer at, what courses are you going to take, what clubs are you going to get involved in, what people are you going to network with what information interviews are you going to set up – and how will they all help you toward your goal. This is a plan. This is something you can execute and push you toward you ultimate goal. Every step has meaning and purpose. So I post this call to action and I get a response – now this is just one response, most of the responses were positive – a person says “At this point, I don't need a plan, as much as I want a foot in the door.”Look I get it, people feel desperate, people are scared, people want their career to appear before them and when it doesn't happen that way they get frustrated. A plan takes time, a job is now.I can hear the frustration bubbling up inside this person. But here's the honest truth.Things like leadership, and love, and fitness…and your career – don't just happen, they are a consistent process. They take time and they take many little tiny micro decisions, or micro actions, that eventually lead up to the point where you get the result you want. You don't go to the gym one day and become fit. You don't just want a job and get a job.It takes steps. It's takes consistent positive action. How do you know what those actions are?Well, think about this for a second. Before you started listening to this podcast did you know the steps Brian Killingsworth took to become CMO of the Vegas Golden Knights? Or how Nicole Lynn became a sports agent? Or how Mike Judge became the manager of ticket sales for the Cleveland Browns? No you probably didn't, but now by listening and learning from these experts you have blueprints. By conducting your own informational interviews you have the steps, by networking, and interning and following the QA sessions and facebook live sessions and all the other great content we share at Work in Sports.com you have the game plan. What are you going to do with it?Today's guest Melanie Newman, Broadcaster for the Frisco RoughRiders is one of just 5 female play by play broadcasters in professional baseball, and she is amazing. Do you really think she's achieved what she has by “hoping” or “wanting” – no, she worked at it. She set her goals, she made her choices, she went after it…Well, I'll let her tell you – here she is, Melanie Newman, Broadcaster for the Frisco RoughRiders!Questions for Melanie Newman, Frisco RoughRiders Broadcaster1: Baseball isn't a sport where you can just wing it – I've known people who can fake it through a basketball game, but baseball is really hard work, the games are long, there are a ton of long pauses, lots of strategy that demands some explaining… when did your love of this game start and why?2: What about the media broadcasting side – when did you figure out your love wasn't just baseball, it was on this storytelling, reporting, broadcasting side of things?

Hi everybody, I'm Brian Clapp Director of Content for WorkinSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast…As you listen to this episode I'll be in sunny Phoenix on a business trip with the rest of the Work in Sports crew coming up with new ideas, features and business objectives for our site – the leading job board for the sports industry. Quick check – yep we still have over 10,000 sports jobs available on our site – 10,148 jobs to be exact so the odds are in your favor since you only need one of them.I may do a Facebook live from the Phoenix office so keep a look out for that in the coming days.Coming up on Wednesday – Melanie Newman, Broadcaster for the double A Frisco RoughRiders – one of only 5 women doing play by play in professional baseball, it was an honor talking to her, real pleasure, it's a great interview. As for today! It's a QA session day which means I'm answering a fan question… from peter in Chicago.Hi Brian, love the podcast. After Cody Parkey double doinked the game winning field goal, losing to the eagles in the playoffs, I literally closed myself in a room and listen to your podcast. It took my mind off what just happened and helped me transition back to real life goals. It also got me thinking about a question – when is the best time of year to get hired? Is there a seasonality effect to hiring that you've noticed in your career? What a cool question Peter…and I have to say I'm honored that I occupied your ear holes in such a time of misery. As you likely know I live outside of Philly, BUT and from Boston, so last year's super bowl was particularly tough on me. I feel you Peter.Let's talk hiring seasons! There are really two answers for this – for internships and for full-time work. And there is some variance based on sport so let's start there. The overarching theme here is that if you want to work in professional sports, a vast majority of hiring takes place in that teams off-season. Usually after the season ends people take some time off…it's a long season, they need to recharge. Then then spend a few weeks around the office planning for what is next – what do we need for next season, what are our budgets, where are the holes on staff etc.I notice that hiring usually ramps up about 1 month to a month and a half after the season ends for teams. Now during the season teams fill holes, of course, if someone leaves the sales department they'll hired their replacements. BUT, the larger numbers of openings become public in that 1-2 month period after the season ends. Now that's on the team side but if we're just talking about regular old sports jobs at networks, at conferences, at athletic departments, at agencies  – Mid-January (i.e. right now) is actually a big hiring period. Why? Well, most companies don't like to hire much between November and December. It is hard to integrate a new hire when people are on vacations, and there is a general lull around the office as we jump from holiday to holiday and throw in some parties. It's just different, so most in HR will wait on their hires unless it's needed immediately. Also, most businesses have an idea on their budget allocations come the first of the year so they may have capital ready for a new hire. There are new sales forecast and new company goals and initiatives – and this can lead to openings in the new year. The first week of January is a blur -people are getting caught up on all the things they neglected at the end of the December, so don't send in your app, or try to get up an informational interview, or really try to do much that first week. Come back hard in week 2!Now, there is also more competition in January – since there are tons of people making new years resolutions to get new jobs…so the battle for attention ensues! My general recommendation is to have a consistent approach to your job search – do a self-audit so you know where your skills stack up and where you have gaps, find jobs on our site that interest you,

This is the time of year when the bats are swinging, the baseballs are flying and the boys and girls of summer are at least thinking of the words to the world’s best baseball song… “Put me in coach. I’m ready to play. Today” As the official spine surgeons for the Frisco RoughRiders, a minor league affiliate of The Texas Rangers, the specialists at Texas Back Institute examine many of these young players when back injuries strike. Often, these injuries are exacerbated when young players – middle school, high school, collegiate and professional - try to “play through the pain.” A recent article in the Wall Street Journal noted overuse injuries are a serious problem, particularly for younger boys and girls. These are caused by the repetitive stress of the muscles and skeletal system without giving them enough rest. According to the article, more than 50 percent of the pediatric sports injuries occur due to a focus on a single sport by a young athlete. Teams, of all skill levels, are trying to combat these injuries due to overuse by giving a greater role to athletic trainers. In an effort to determine is this is a positive trend or one that is dangerous, Dr. Rey Bosita, a spine surgeon at Texas Back Institute, was asked to give his professional pitch.
