In this special hour-long episode of Late Nite Take Out, my friend, music journalist, & fellow music lover Josh comes on the show to share his thoughts & have a conversation with me about Music Culture. It was an absolute blast making this episode with him! I got to find out how well-spoken and intelligent my friend is and truly connect over culture. During our conversation, we cover a variety of topics, such as black celebration, cultural appropriation, racism, trends, predictions, & the current state of music. But not only that, but we also just chop it up about life. My favorite parts of the conversation are where Josh talks about when he feels most represented in music, & when he and I talk about feeling "othered" by music. We don't hold back! And, get as honest as we can be. I got to talk about how I relate to music as an Asian American man, too. That felt particularly great. On that topic, Is black music made only for black people? What is the responsibility of the listener, and artist, when taking part in a culture that is not theirs? All things we talk about in this episode. Timestamps 1 - 14min. Introductions, Black Celebration, Cultural Appropriation 14 - 30min. When Josh felt most represented in Music, artists who push the boundaries, & who is music made for? 46 - 58min. In this week’s episode, Amrit interviews Josh Gryniewicz, a storyteller, storytelling consultant and writer. He is founder of Odd Duck LLC., a boutique storytelling for social change communication firm, that works with nonprofits, NGOs, social impact start-ups, and issue-based documentaries to help them shape their narrative.Josh Gryniewicz is co-host of the beautiful Story Matters podcast. This podcast is about why story actually does matter. It focuses on the use of story for social change and the power of narrative to shape culture, especially during times of crisis. We are going through climate change and social challenges that are threatening our democracy and safety. We are also in the middle of a global pandemic. But Josh and Story Matters give hope. This podcast uses the power of imagination conveyed by narrative to overcome all the adversity and sad things that we are facing in this world. “We need to think more broadly and that means a call for radical imagination and changing the narrative of everything that brought us to this point”“Narrative gives us the structure to reimagine what's possible and see solutions”Story Matters brings the storytelling campfire experience right to you! If you would like to listen to it, please go to: https://www.storymatters.site/Josh and Amrit dive deep into the heart of “story”. They share an entertaining and fascinating conversation about the depths and history of “story”, and what it means to be living your story. Josh is a storyteller above all and covers more than 45000 years of evolutionary storytelling history. Amrit is wisdom hungry and completely fascinated about storytelling ever since he can talk. They both turn this episode into a moment of bliss.Amrit makes reference to experts in psychology, mythology, unified physics, religion, literature, philosophy, neuroscience and human cultural evolution amongst others to explore his point. He believes that wisdom, especially in his country, was passed on to later generations through the ability of storytelling, and we have lost some of that art because of the need of writing and not being able to transmit stories verbally. He sees clearly how much story informs us as human beings and our story and narrative. We are connected to our story and our story informs our presence; the way we live is through our character and the character is in our story. Josh believes a lot of storytelling is a learning tool but going back to the aboriginal origins, he remarks that it was used for a cooperative purpose. In regards to written word as opposed to the oral traditions, he affirms that when you start recording a series of events in a factual and detailed way all it does is reinforce the protagonist models making us follow somebody through a narrative from beginning to end. This isolates us and takes us away from the collective model where we are all together getting bits of that story and sharing that space. When Josh is training, he talks a lot about Joseph Campbell’s “Hero Myth”, a common template of stories that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and comes home changed or transformed. And also refers to his favourite and beautiful concept of “Sonder”, the realization that each random passer-by is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. Josh embodies and strongly believes that every single one of us has an informed rich inner life, we all have our own experiences, and we are all protagonists in our own stories. Everybody is in a story with their own story and collectively trying to bring all those stories together.Sharing story can heal you. Josh has witnessed it at first hand and states that healing is about looking at your trauma through your lense and taking ownership and action over it. And each time you heal, your story shifts including more of what is relevant in your life and reducing the trauma. Finally, Josh talks about why we identify with some characters in movies and books. When you identify with a character, you identify with their narrative and this activates the same parts of your brain, so what you are sensing is because you are very in tuned with your own mind. He also shares a short hilarious story about Hemingway you can't miss, as well as another couple of arguments to demonstrate there is something about how the viewer, listener, experiencer, audiencer, of the story interprets what they see and how they incorporate it into their own experiences.Gryniewicz shares ways in which people can connect to their own story. He himself is focussed on sharing stories publicly and connects by journaling and picking up things of his day, looking at them in different ways and trying to understand how important they are to him. Personally he suggests you pay attention to the stories you tell yourself and why you tell them in a certain way. If you see it needs to be changed, then change it. In this chapter you will learn how to live your story in the most empowered way you have ever imagined.“Each random passer-by is living a life as vivid and complex as your own” About Josh Gryniewicz:Josh Gryniewicz is the founder of Odd Duck, a boutique storytelling for social change communication firm. When good things end is the 199th episode of the Soul Forge Podcast. And yet, it's so much more than that. This episode is a kind of eulogy for the Rusted Robot Podcast. Rusted was my baby for more than 7 years, and I did everything I could to make it successful, entertaining, and fun. Those days are over now, and this is a nostalgic look back at something I put my heart and soul into. Enjoy! The Final Episode of The Rusted Robot Podcast April 18, 2021 It's been a long road getting from there to here. From humble beginnings, to a pop culture phenomenon, the Rusted Robot Podcast has been around a very long time. We have met so many amazing people along the way. We would like to thank you all for the support you have shown us over the years. The podcast began in January 2014, and with only a few breaks here and there, it continued on for almost 7 and a half years. It started with Shawn and his wife Brigitte sharing their love of all things geek. It was an attempt to bring a bit of culture to a small northern Ontario town better known for hunting, fishing, drinking and drugs. Once their marriage fell apart, they continued on for awhile but times changed. After a brief hiatus, Shawn recruited Josh as a new co-host. When Josh wasn't available, there would be solo episodes and other guest hosts. This episode is a farewell to a huge part of Shawn's life. The episode is filled with nostalgia and absolutely packed with clips. So many people were a part of this episode in particular, and of the podcast in general. 62. The 7 Systems of Influence and How They Can Help Us Create, Leverage, and Maintain Influence

Monetization Nation Podcast

Welcome back to another episode with Josh Steimle. Previously, we discussed Josh's career and content writing. In today's episode, we're going to discuss the 7 Systems of Influence and how they can help us gain influence with our ideal customers. The 7 Systems of Influence The seven systems of influence include vision, genius zone, audience, content, action, collaboration, and love. They act as a framework, a way of thinking and organizing information, to create influence and then leverage that influence to achieve goals. Arguably the most effective way to get what we want is through influence. We say knowledge is power, but knowledge can't really get us anywhere without influence. So the seven systems of influence are the fundamental steps, or systems, we can use to create, leverage, and maintain influence.   Vision   The first system is vision. For anything we want, we have to clearly visualize it. For example, if what we want is our child to take out the trash, we have to visualize it. Whether it is something small like that or something big like creating a billion-dollar business over the next 10 years, we have to visualize it. Then we have a clear vision of where we need to be going, and it will be much easier to stay focused on it. We may run around chasing a goal that we haven't fully visualized. We end up chasing visions we don't really want because they have not been fully formulated. By sitting down and going through the right process, we can clarify our vision and make sure it's what we really want. Then we focus our time and resources to ensure that vision happens.   Genius Zone   System number two is the genius zone. This system asks questions such as “Who are you? What are you good at? What is your knowledge? What is your experience? What is it that makes you special? What can you do that no one else can do?” Josh grew up skateboarding. He ran a skate shop as a kid, and today, he's still connected to the industry. So, he knows a bit about skateboarding. However, he isn't the only one with that knowledge; there are probably 20 million other people in the world who know as much as he does about skateboarding. Josh also knows a bit about marketing, having run a marketing agency for 20 years. But again, he's not the only marketing expert in the world. When Josh overlaps these two expert zones, they create a genius zone. There aren't many people who have his knowledge about skateboarding and marketing combined. This makes him unique in this area. So, he could go to a company like Nike with this experience and help them market shoes to skateboarders. This is a simple example of overlapping two areas, but we might overlap in five different areas. It might include the language we speak, somewhere we live or some other experience in our background. When we start listing out our expert zones and looking for unique connections and overlaps, we'll find genius zones that nobody else in the world has. Typically, we have one genius zone that stands out to us, one we are passionate about and want to spend the rest of our life doing.   Audience   The third system is the audience. Who can we serve with our genius zone? The question is not “Who is anyone in the world who might care a little bit about our genius zone?” The question is “Who are the people who desperately need what we offer through our genius?” Josh likes to ask his clients how many customers they would need to totally change their business. For those who are doing consulting, the answer is typically 10 or 20. Josh then asks how many potential customers they have in the world. His clients respond by saying, “millions.” Then Josh says, “If you only need 10 or 20 to change your business, why are you creating your content and messaging for millions? Why would you create content marketing and messaging that appeals to millions rather than to the 10 people you would ideally love to work with?” We can pick and choose. For example, with Josh's published author program, he decided he wanted to work with entrepreneurs. He could work with a lot of people and help them to write books, but he loves working with entrepreneurs. So, he decided to narrow it down and only work with entrepreneurs,  creating content marketing and messaging directly for them. Because of this, they often feel like Josh is speaking right to them, and they want to work with him because of that. 61% of consumers say that they are more likely to buy from a company that provides custom content (Source: dragon360.com).   Content   Content is system number four. Now that we know our ideal audience, we can ask what will motivate them to take action. We often think of content as a book or website, but it's also our words or example. It can be the chore chart on the fridge to track tasks for our kids. If we're trying to build a billion-dollar business over the next 10 years, then it's important to ask: what's the content we need to create to recruit partners, to recruit clients, and to get people to fund this?   Action   System number five is action. What is the plan to get this done? If the content is a book, the action questions may be how are we going to finish this book? How are we going to write it? How are we going to get started? Are we going to write the book ourselves or hire a ghostwriter to do it? “Everybody needs a plan to actually get to a destination.” - Josh Steimle   Collaboration   The sixth system is collaboration. The central question of this system is how can I work with other people to get 1,000 times the influence that I have on my own? Josh has a friend, Derek Andersen, who started a company called Startup Grind. The company started because Derek began interviewing successful entrepreneurs in the Bay Area. He hosted a fireside chat and only about 10 people attended, but they wanted him to do more. About 20 people attended the second one, and more went to the third one. Someone came to Derek and asked if they could host one of the events in San Jose. Derek said yes, and they partnered together to start Startup Grind. Today, Startup Grind has 800 or 900 chapters around the world, and they've hosted millions of people at their local events. Derek has been able to influence millions of people, which he never would have been able to do by himself. Collaboration allows us to spread our influence a lot further than we could otherwise on our own. We can think about: who can we work with? Who has the same audience? Or who has the same audience but is selling something else? How can we find somebody who wants to connect with the same audience we want to connect with? How can we collaborate in a way that we both end up with more influence?   Love   The final system of influence is love. This was a difficult system for Josh to come up with. He had the first six, but he knew something important was missing. He realized it was love through a discussion he had with his business partner about parenting. Josh's business partner said, “If you know your parents love you, it really makes up for a lot of the mistakes they make because you know their hearts are in the right place.” The truth of this statement stuck with Josh and made him realize that love was the last element he needed in his systems. We often let people do crazy things if they have good intentions, but love is all about goodwill and good intent. “If people feel like you are trying to help them because you really want to help them, then you can get almost everything else wrong in the systems of influence, and you will still have influence. But if you get everything else right—the vision, the genius zone, the audience, the content, everything—you can do everything else right. But if there's no love, people will just ignore it, and then you have no influence.” - Josh Steimle Why are they called systems?  Josh calls them systems because they don't have to be done in order like steps. As with a car and its propulsion system, steering system, navigation system, etc., all the systems work and run at the same time. Then we can move from point A to point B. However, if one of those systems is not working well, it can throw everything into reverse. The Importance of Data in Marketing One of Josh's favorite interviews from his book, Chief Marketing Officers at Work, was with Seth Farbman, the former CMO of Spotify. Seth told Josh a story about the importance of data in marketing. Seth and his team were looking at Spotify user data, and there was a group of people listening to Spotify consistently for about seven or eight hours without any interaction. They weren't changing or skipping anything. Seth was unsure what these users were doing for so long without interaction, but he eventually realized they were sleeping with music on.  This realization allowed Spotify to set up many playlists for people to use while they were sleeping, and to further entrench themselves with that user group. Spotting trends from data can lead to product development and new ideas. Looking at the data allowed Spotify to do marketing that further connected them to their users. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Josh for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: It is important to visualize our goals so we have a clear direction and increase our chance to accomplish them. We can combine our expert zones to create a genius zone, which becomes a skillset unique to us. We must think about who our ideal audience is to create content marketing and messaging that will appeal specifically to them. If we're trying to build a billion-dollar business over the next 10 years, then we have to think about what content we are going to create that will help us do so. In order to achieve our goals, we need a plan of action. We can collaborate with others to gain even more influence. Without love, the other systems of influence won't help us. We have to care about our audience and our business. Use the systems together to achieve our goals. Spotting trends from data can lead to product development and new ideas. “72% of marketers say content marketing increases engagement. In addition, 72% say it has increased the number of leads.” (Source: optinmonster.com) Content writing can be a great way to boost leads for our businesses. In today's episode, Josh Steimle and I discuss how he got into content writing and how he is helping others to do the same. Josh Steimle has generated more than $10 million in revenue from his businesses by authoring books and writing articles for publications like Forbes, Fortune, Time, Inc., Mashable, TechCrunch, and Entrepreneur. Josh created the 7 Systems of Influence. He wrote the book Chief Marketing Officers at Work, which contains 29 interviews with Chief Marketing Officers from organizations such as GE, Harvard Business School, Spotify, Target, and PayPal. He won the BYU Business Plan competition in 2001, the same competition that helped me start my first business in 1997. He was also named Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002 by the Utah Small Business Association.  Josh's Entrepreneurial Journey Starting Entrepreneurship Young As a child, Josh loved to find creative ways to make money. He was always recycling paper, cans, and newspapers. In high school, he even sold skateboard goods and competed with the vending machines by selling a lot of candy at school. When he got older, Josh planned to be an artist because he knew how to draw. He didn't realize that entrepreneurship was something he could study. He then learned about business school after his first year of college and immediately switched from art to business.  Starting His Own Business As John got further into the business world after college, he realized he wanted to start his own business. So, he quit his full-time job in 1999 and started a web design firm. “The problem with entrepreneurs is that we have a high tolerance for risk and a low sense of reality. And so I thought, I'm gonna start a business. This is going to be great, I'm going to make a lot of money, and everything's going to be awesome. I had no clue what I was doing.” -Josh Steimle Josh had a difficult time signing on clients at first. He hadn't landed a single client when a telemarketer called, trying to sell him something. Josh told the telemarketer he didn't have any money, and the telemarketer then asked what Josh did for a living. Josh said he designed websites, and the telemarketer replied with, “Oh, my brother needs a website, let me connect you with him.”  That's how Josh received his first client. Things didn't go well at first, but eventually, they picked up. Josh was able to make enough money to survive. He expanded the business to focus on the marketing side of things, providing services such as SEO and paid ads.  Becoming a Writer When Josh was at a low point with that business, he did two things that changed his life. He brought in a partner, and he started writing for Forbes magazine. Up until this point, Josh had never thought of himself as a writer, even though he'd done lots of blogging.  As Josh started writing for Forbes, he began receiving a lot of leads from it. Clients were coming to him after reading his articles, wanting to hire John's agency to do their marketing. This attention from Forbes helped his business grow. After writing for Forbes, Josh wanted to see if he could write for other publications. He started writing articles for Entrepreneur, Fortune, Mashable, TechCrunch, Time, and Business Insider. Josh really enjoyed writing for these publications, which sent his business a lot of leads. Writing also led to his first book deal. Shortly after his book deal, people came to Josh for advice, wondering how he created content that generated attention for his business. He then began coaching clients on how to build a personal brand, how to engage, and how to create thought leadership content. This coaching is what Josh focuses on today. The Importance of Audience Of all the publications Josh has written for, Forbes has been the best for generating attention to his business. At one point, Josh did an experiment with different publications. He had an article on Forbes that led to millions of dollars of revenue for his business. He wrote very similar articles like the ones published on Forbes and published them in other publications, but nothing happened. The articles didn't generate any leads in the other publications. Josh realized that Forbes had the right audience to generate his ideal leads while the other publications didn't. Josh's Passions: Influence and Helping Others Josh is passionate about influence, which is where the seven systems of influence came from. But, it all started when Josh realized he wanted to share what he's learned over the years about marketing and thought leadership. He wanted to help people share their message and make the world a better place. He wanted to help by mobilizing people to become more influential by writing books or building large followings on social media. Biggest Home Run When I asked Josh about the biggest home run in his career, he responded that he didn't think about the most satisfying moments in his career as financial home runs. Rather, the biggest, most important, and most satisfying moments in his career have been about individuals. His home runs have come by doing something that changed a person's life. He finds it satisfying when they come back and say, “I'm a different person!” or “My life has improved because of what you guys did for me.” Recently, one of the students in Josh's Published Author program said to Josh, “I'm not going to write the book I was going to write.” When Josh asked him why, the student said, “I went through your workbook, and I realized I don't even like this business that I'm in. I'm going to go change my career, and I'm going to start something entirely different than what I thought I was going to do.” Josh thought it was amazing he was able to help this student realize he wanted to do something else, which would change this individual's life direction. Published Author Program Josh's new published author program is about making it easy for entrepreneurs to publish books that they are going to use as marketing tools for their businesses. In addition to using the book as a great marketing tool, they want them to write meaningful books, books that will help people and make a difference. The program walks these entrepreneurs through each step of the book publishing process. The program includes different levels. They have some free content on Josh's Published Author Podcast. Then they have a large group that's more affordable, a mid-tier group, and one-on-one coaching. Length of Business Books Most business books are 150 to 200 pages or 50,000 to 80,000 words. Shorter books are becoming more popular. However, Josh says the length doesn't really matter as long as it has good content and is well written. “The fact is that people will pay attention to any content that's good, and if it's good, they generally want more of that. That's why kids read Harry Potter and these other huge books because it's great content, and they want more of it. If a book is boring, it's not necessarily because it's too long. It's just that it's too boring, and the content needs to be written better.” -Josh Steimle Key Takeaways Thank you so much Josh for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: We shouldn't be afraid to make changes in our lives to help us get where we want to be. We can use good content to help us generate leads for our businesses. If we are writing for other publications, make sure their audience matches ours so we receive good leads. The length of a book often doesn't matter as long as the content is valuable and well-written. 55. How to Use Influencer Marketing and Other Strategies to Increase Credibility

Monetization Nation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2021 15:15

Historically, businesses would focus on purchasing advertising and reach and then use that reach to tell people how awesome they were. That model doesn't work very well anymore. If I want to buy a new SUV, I'm not going to go to a Toyota salesperson and ask them what the best SUV is. I'm going to go to credible sources such as review sites or safety rating sites to pull incredible data to help me make a decision.  One of the credible sources people go to now are influencers, experts in the field who have a wide audience and a lot of credibilities. 49% of consumers depend on influencer recommendations (Source: digitalmarketinginstitute.com). In today's episode, Josh Albrechtsen and I talk about how we can leverage influencers and other strategies to boost our credibility. Josh Albrechtsen graduated from the BYU Marriott School with a BS in Management Information Systems. He started his full-time career at Entrata as a development project manager, and he was promoted to lead different parts of the company over his 5-year tenure, including the development, services, and product management organization. Josh left Entrata to become a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator with the Ensign Group. He met Riley, his partner and the founder of Cortex, while running a Skilled Nursing Facility in Orem, UT, and eventually joined Riley as a co-founder of Cortex. Josh has accepted a spot in the MIT Sloan EMBA Class of 2023. Entrata and Influencer Marketing Entrata was Josh's first job out of college. He started doing development project management for them and was eventually promoted to lead that team. While in that position, Josh had the opportunity to work with developers in India and travel there. He transitioned to a services leadership role for about two years. Then, he moved to project management as Entrata was growing there. Early on while Josh was working at Entrata, the company's sales began to grow. But, they were growing fairly linear. Josh was a part of the executive team when they made the decision to connect with some industry consultants in the multifamily space. These consultants were highly regarded at trade shows and were there on the panels talking about multifamily. Entrata did a consulting arrangement with each of them, and ultimately the arrangement led to more conversations that would not have happened, otherwise, because the consultants had the network and credibility that Entrata could piggyback off of. Entrata grew exponentially purely because of that change. Influencer marketing can lead to a lot of success and growth. Entrata found people that have influence in the space, and they positively associated themselves with those influencers and leveraged their credibility. Using the “Kind of Like” Strategy to Describe Our Business Josh left Entrata and became a nursing home administrator. He did that for two years and then co-founded Cortex. When Josh was describing Cortex to me, he said Cortex does follow-up phone calls for healthcare providers to patients recovering at home, employing registered nurses to make the phone calls. Then he said it's kind of like Uber for nurses doing in-home health care. This “kind of like” strategy of describing a business is one of the secrets for credibility. This strategy is a great element of credibility because we can take something that is credible― something that everybody knows is credible and knows how it works―and associate it with ourselves but with a small twist. If we were to describe Airbnb this way, we'd say it's kind of like Uber for homes.  Being Vulnerable to Build Credibility One of Josh's mentors and associates is Johnny Hanna, the CEO, and co-founder of Homie. Recently, Johnny has become more prolific on LinkedIn, and he's been doing mental health Monday posts. He is being very vulnerable on LinkedIn about mental health issues he has struggled with or that he's helped other people with, inviting them to be more vulnerable and open.  Initially, these mental health posts had some traction, but now they have massive followings. In the comments, people repeatedly say that when Johnny pulled them aside or sat in their car and talked to them about this topic, it really resonated with them. These individuals have since been seeing a therapist, working on their mental health, or doing something else to address this issue.  Being vulnerable with our associates is a huge aspect of credibility. One of the secrets is the secret of imperfection. When we try to be perfect, we're not real. But, showing the scars we have actually gives us credibility. It allows people to connect with us in a way that is otherwise difficult when we are trying to be “perfect.” Perfect is not relatable because nobody is perfect. “Trust is a product of vulnerability that grows over time and requires work, attention, and full engagement.” -Brene Brown, American professor, lecturer, author, and podcast host Listening First Another concept of credibility is listening first. Josh's father is a great example of this. Josh called him before the interview, asking him for advice on something, and Josh said he talked for the majority of the time while his dad just listened to him. When Josh was growing up, his dad was the CEO of a motorhome company. Josh asked him how he managed his life with all the people in his company. His dad said he just stayed quiet and listened. People usually assumed Josh's dad was smart, but he surrounded himself with smart people who could help him. "Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand." -Karl A. Menninger, American psychiatrist The Most Credible People in Josh's Life When I asked Josh who is the person that has the most credibility for him in his life, he said first his father and outside his family, Johnny Hanna. He said they are very similar in many ways. They both always do what they say they're going to do. They are both vulnerable. Despite having a lot of success, they both haven't let that go to their heads; one wouldn't know how successful they are if they met them on the street. Johnny and Josh's father are intelligent, well-versed in business and life principles, and they rely on those principles instead of the opinions of others. Month-to-Month vs Long-Term Contracts When I was running Adoption.com, I had a client that stayed with me for 11 years, the longest client I've ever had. This client was on a month-to-month contract with me, and I believe that is one of the reasons he stayed with me for so long. If there was something wrong, I had to fix it immediately. It forced me to try to make him happy every month.  Long-term contracts are the enemy of successful long-term business relationships. If a customer isn't happy, they will cancel as soon as they can. Most SaaS customers usually sign month-to-month contracts for this very reason.  Key Takeaways Thank you so much Josh for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: We can connect and build positive relationships with influencers to connect with their credibility and network.  To establish credibility when we're describing our business, we can use the “kind of like” strategy to connect customers with something familiar and credible and put our own unique angle on it.  When we are vulnerable with our customers, we can connect on a higher level and establish credibility with them. Listening to others is a great strategy for credibility because it shows them we care about what they have to say. Just like Johnny Hanna and Josh's dad, if we are committed, vulnerable, humble, and hold strong to our principles, our credibility will probably grow. Consider using month-to-month contracts to encourage us to keep our clients happy. We may be able to keep our customers for a longer period of time this way. How does a 27 year old become the CEO of a major online brand? Not only that, how does a 27 year old take an online brand, build upon it, and create something better? Well, if your name is Scott Trench, the answer is: a lot of hard work, some tough decisions, and looking out for the customer whenever possible. Before he was head honcho at BiggerPockets, Scott was a financial analyst in the corporate world. When Josh initially got sober, he held onto the reservation that at some point he'd be able to drink successfully. It wasn't until he began to grasp the concept of staying sober just for one day at a time that he was able to continue his journey in the program.. . . AND NO MORE RESERVATIONSWe have seen the truth again and again: "Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic.". . . If we are planning to stop drinking, there must be no reservation of any kind, nor any lurking notion that someday we will be immune to alcohol. . . . To be gravely affected, one does not necessarily have to drink a long time nor take the quantities some of us have. This is particularly true of women. Potential female alcoholics often turn into the real thing and are gone beyond recall in a few years.ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 33These words are underlined in my book. They are true for men and women alcoholics. On many occasions I've turned to this page and reflected on this passage. I need never fool myself by recalling my sometimes differing drinking patterns, or by believing I am "cured." I like to think that, if sobriety is God's gift to me, then my sober life is my gift to God. I hope God is as happy with His gift as I am with mine.Need the Daily Reflection Book?Visit our web siteRead about Recovery on our BlogVisit our Facebook GroupFollow us on TwitterSupport the Podcast:- On Patreon: https://patreon.com/dailyreflection- On PayPal: https://paypal.me/dailyreflection

We are joined today by Josh Garman. Josh is a touring cyclist who lives in the U.K. and recently cycled 600 miles across England ~ with E.T. as his co-pilot!Josh is an accidental touring cyclist who started his first tour with no prior cycling experience. He had spent time in Australia as a barefoot long-distance walker but had never considered a bike tour. When Josh returned to England, he learned about Chris Brannigan, a father who walked across England barefoot to raise money for his daughter’s medical treatment. Josh was captivated by this unique story and decided right there and then that he would do something to help.He came up with the idea of doing a cycle tour to raise funds for Chris’s charity, Hope for Hasti. While planning his trip on a gloomy, rainy day, the scene from the movie E.T. where Elliot rides across the sky with E.T. on his bike came to him. The vision brought such a simile to his face, and he decided that he would take E.T. along with him to bring attention to his fundraising cause. In 2 short weeks, with very little planning, a small budget, and way too much gear, he set off. Josh spent a total of 23 days on the road. It was very slow going at the start, and he quickly realized that a mountain bike loaded down with gear is not the right way to travel on the English roads! Having E.T. along brought him tremendous attention. Josh spent the first night sleeping in a small tent, but people started offering him shelter after news of his tour got out. He spent 21 of the 23 nights on the road staying in people’s houses, some of which were Warmshowers hosts. Josh was overwhelmed by the kindness he received from total strangers on his journey. On the second last day of Josh’s tour, he and Chris Brannigan from Hope for Hasti finally got to meet. His trip was such a magical experience for him that he knew he would do it again. For his next challenge, he plans to cycle 5000 miles around the coast of England, towing a bicycle camper he built to resemble a school bus while raising money for charity. You can learn more about Josh on Instagram at ExpeditionJosh, on Facebook, on Patreon, YouTube, or his website ExpeditionJosh.com. The company works to retrofit existing industrial equipment to enable carbon capture and resale. When Josh and Daniel broke down the cost of direct air capture systems, they realized a large portion of the cost hinges on one component. Noya is working to reduce this component's cost, allowing for a scalable process that can have a massive impact. Noya aims to capture seven gigatons of carbon emissions with a removal cost that is half the current market price through its proprietary technology.Josh and Daniel are fantastic guests with a great vision. For more TrueFire Live sessions, check out https://truefire.com/liveAbout Matt:Though he holds a British passport and is an inductee of the British Blues Hall of Fame, Matt Schofield has been making his mark globally as one of the top players in the new class of six string wunderkinds. The Los Angeles Daily News wrote, In Schofield, the UK has produced the best Blues guitarist from any country in decades head and shoulders above the herd, while Guitar & Bass Magazine rated him in the top ten British blues guitarists of all time ranking him with icons Eric Clapton and Peter Green.Born in the industrial city of Manchester and raised amongst the rolling hills and locked in time Cotswolds, Schofield began playing guitar at the age of 12.My dad relocated to America, but before he left he gave me a BB King video. I watched it before school every day; it was three or four tracks from a concert. Later, when I was in California with my father, he showed me BB King with Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan on video. It was like; Ive got to do this. Theres something about the way the three of them were jamming. B.B. really was majestic. As an 11-or 12-year-old watching him, I was mesmerized but didnt think there was any way I could ever do that. It was too special. But when I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan playing with him, I thought maybe I could. Stevie made it seem accessible to people. I taught myself, working my way through my Dads great blues record collection. I did my first gig age 13, and Ive been doing it ever since. At age 18 he left the countryside and moved to London. There, as a sideman, he was able to hone his skills as backing a great variety of experienced and well known artists of the British Blues scene, visiting American artists, as well start touring internationally. The introspective, well read (lover of science, history and philosophy) and passionate Schofield said, this enabled me to stay close to my roots while learning my trade and exploring a variety of musical frontiers.By age 25 I was starting to explore my own band projects. Although my formative guitar influences are the largely the old school blues players, I never wanted my own music to be constrained by a rigid formula, or even genre. I just want to play Matt Schofield music. Classic Jazz, funk, soul and rock and all the music I love have all found their way into it. The process of writing and singing has become increasingly important to me, and I feel its those other aspects of creativity that helped define my own voice on the guitar. Its always been important to find a context for the guitar to be part of, so that its not just guitar solos for their own sake.I remain a music lover first and foremost. The recognition Ive received from both fans and peers is humbling and inspiring, and those pinch me moments where I found myself trading licks with heroes like Robben Ford and Buddy Guy are still the biggest thrill. Now after five studio albums and a solid 10 years of touring with my own band, I have definite broader concepts I want to explore. Remaining open to where the music might take me while maintaining the excitement that improvising and collaborating with talented musicians allow, is key to me. My inspiration and goals came from many places: My influences old and new, including musicians I have wanted to collaborate with for years. Things I still feel I hadn't fully realized on previous studio records, and a need to keep pushing myself. It all meets at the place where Im heading now. Im always aiming to go as far as possible to capturing the same connection with the listener that I aim to make at a live show or on record. Thats the goal. Capturing that special moment."About Josh:Josh Smith was born October 7, 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut. Before he was 1, his family relocated to Florida, eventually settling in Pembroke Pines, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. At age 3, he received his first guitar and at 6, he started taking guitar lessons.Josh was exposed to the blues at an early age. He listened to a variety of artists, such as Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Albert King and T-Bone Walker. He also started going to concerts, including the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.By 12, Josh was playing at established professional blues jams in South Florida, such as Musicians Exchange Café in Fort Lauderdale and Club M in Hollywood, FL.When Josh was 13, the Rhino Cats, house band at Club M, asked him to be the lead guitarist. Musicians Exchange owner Don Cohen was so taken aback by the talent of this young musician that he offered to help manage and develop Josh’s career. The Café was renowned for bringing in the best national touring blues bands, and Josh was quick to learn how to approach these blues greats, many of whom would invite Josh to sit in with them, thinking it may be a “novelty” to have a 14-year-old kid playing the blues. The novelty quickly wore off and was replaced by musicians stopping, watching and listening as this “kid” wailed out blues licks better than many of the touring guitarists on the circuit. Josh began sitting in with such greats as Jimmy Thackery, Tinsley Ellis, Kenny Neal, Lucky Peterson, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Johnny “Clyde” Copeland, Double Trouble, Joanna Connor and Kim Simmonds, among others. Jimmy Thackery said of the 14-year-old, “Josh is three heartbreaks away from being a true blues guitar genius.” At 14, Josh released his first CD, Born Under a Blue Sign , and at 15, he released his second CD, Woodsheddin. While performing all over South Florida, Josh Smith and the Rhino Cats quickly became one of the most in-demand blues bands in the area. In 1994, while Josh was only 15, they received the Florida Jammy Award for best blues band and were selected as XS Readers Choice Winners in 1995 for best blues band. In 1996, then a senior in high school, Josh was put on the cover of the national magazine High School Senior , which hailed him as an “Up and Coming Guitar Legend.” That same year, Washburn Guitars Int’l recognized Josh’s talent and offered him an endorsement. They flew Josh to Chicago and guitar luthier Grover Jackson built him a custom guitar.Although Josh was an honor student, after graduation from high school in June 1997, Josh followed his heart and began pursuing what he was best at. His first national tour ensued with his newly formed power trio, Josh Smith and the Frost. Josh was now the band leader and vocalist, so he not only had to continue developing his guitar chops, but had to concentrate on his vocal prowess. In September 1997, Josh enlisted world-renowned producer Jim Gaines, whose credits include Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Luther Allison, Steve Miller and Jimmy Thackery, to produce his third CD, Too Damn Cold.By 1998, Josh had completed four national tours with his band. In January 1998, Billboard Magazine took note of the rising young talent in a Continental Drift article. In February 1998, Josh was asked to support B.B. King on a number of theatre dates. In March 1998, the TV show Chicago Hope purchased the rights to the tune “32 degrees” from Too Damn Cold . An international CD release, The Mentos Freshmaker Tour , included the title cut, “Too Damn Cold,” in the spring of 1998.Josh toured nationally all of 1999 and in October of that year, he entered the recording studio again with Jim Gaines and produced Woman , his fourth CD. This CD was released and well received in the spring of 2000. Josh continued to tour the East Coast from New York to Florida through 2001 with his band. In June 2002, he married and he and his wife decided to move to Los Angeles. Josh was ready for something new and wanted to be around a variety of musicians. He also began being a sideman.Within a year of moving to L.A., he was retained by Virgin recording artist Ricky Fante. He played nationally and internationally with Ricky for the next two years. In May 2006, Josh recorded his fifth CD, Deep Roots . A more traditional blues CD, his music was once again well received by Blueswax and Blues Revue magazine. Josh continued to play with a variety of artists, such as actress Taryn Manning, Universal hip-hop artist Benny Cassette and Tara Ellis, to name a few. In January 2007, Josh was hired by 2006 American Idol winner Taylor Hicks to be his lead guitarist. They completed two national tours from February-September 2007 with monthly dates and charity events until June 2008 when Taylor started Grease! on Broadway. In July 2008, Josh was hired by Raphael Saadiq. Since that time, Josh has played such high profile gigs with Raphael as backing Mick Jagger at the Grammy Awards in 2011 and the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2011. Josh continues to tour nationally and internationally with Raphael.Josh released his 6th studio CD, “Inception,” in 2009. This is an all-instrumental CD with a variety of genres that was once again well received by the public and critics alike. In 2010, Josh was signed to Crosscut Records, a label based out of Germany. Crosscut re-released Josh’s CD, “Deep Roots,” as “I’m Gonna Be Ready.” In October 2012, Josh’s CD, “Don’t Give Up On Me,” was released in Germany.Josh continues to live in the Los Angeles area with his wife and two children.About Jeff:Jeff McErlain is one of the rare musicians who can teach as well as he plays. Kate from Federal Way has asked for help with her boyfriend Josh who she says is turning their yard into a trashy junk yard. Josh has been buying cars with the intention of fixing them up and selling them, but Kate says he lacks the skills to do it, as well as the money needed to fix them up. At first Kate was supportive of Josh having this hobby and his vision of investment but now all he does is buy junky cars and leave them and their parts lying around and now the yard and garage make them look like, in her words, the “white trash house of the neighborhood” and she’s embarrassed to even have people over. Plus Kate is really stressed-out about how much money he is spending on all this. When Josh comes on he says this is an investment and she needs to be patient and in fact this is his plan for the future and how to send their kids through college. When he lists the cars he has, even Drew is impressed but Drew cautions Josh that if he doesn’t start working on them soon they will lose value. Josh says Kate needs to have more faith in him, but Kate says Josh needs to face reality. Can the P1’s help them? Can they work this out? And will Drew buy a few of these cars off Josh?

“Sometimes it takes a car crash to realize you were driving irresponsibly.” When his mother died and his marriage ended in the same month, Josh Millburn had to reexamine how he was living. He had spent his twenties focused on making money and climbing the corporate ladder. He wracked up a lot of debt and was focused on so called success and achievement. In our society, we know that means accumulating more and more stuff, believing that “if we just get one more thing, I’ll be happy”. The average American household has over 300,000 items in it. But stuff never fills the void, it only widens it. Josh woke up to that reality and embraced a minimalist lifestyle, writing an ebook called “The Minimalist Rulebook: 16 Rules for Living with Less.” Living more deliberately with less is now Josh’s way of life. After the financial crisis of 2008, Josh realized his money and stuff were doing the opposite of what he wanted. They weren’t making him happy. They were getting in the way of what was truly important. Too often we live with overindulgent consumption and sometimes a big event is needed to wake us up. For single parents, the changes that lead us to parenting alone often act as a wake-up call or “car crash”. Covid has had the same affect for many too. We find ourselves reevaluating our lives, our priorities and our decisions. When Josh found himself reevaluating, he discovered that it was time to redefine what brought value to his life. Rather than letting his belongings give the impression of adding value, he started to examine everything he owned through a different lens. He started asking himself what he needed to let go of and what was important to keep. In this process, he found out that sometimes we assign equal value to all the things in our life even when they don’t add the same benefits. Instead, we must be intentional in determining what adds value and what doesn’t. In doing so himself, Josh began to embrace a minimalist lifestyle. He now only owns things that serve a purpose or bring him joy like art or music. The Minimalist Rulebook Josh uses a set of “rules’ to determine what he keeps and what he eliminates from his life. These are found in his e-book, “The Minimalist Rulebook: 16 Rules for Living with Less”, available free on his website (www.theminimalists.com). These rules aren’t meant to be rigid or exhaustive. They are meant to be used like a recipe. You put several of them together to get the result you want. For example, we sometimes justify holding on to things “just in case”. Josh says these are the three most dangerous rules when it comes to hanging on to things. To overcome the “just in case” mentality, Josh says you should never hang on to anything “just in case” if it is something you can replace for $20 or less without having to go out of your way more than 20 minutes. Another rule is the 90/90 rule. Ask yourself, have I used this in the last 90 days? If not, ask yourself if you will use it in the next 90 days. If not, give yourself permission to let that item go. When it comes to the minimalist lifestyle, Josh says don’t start with nostalgic or sentimental items nostalgic like letters, cards, and kids’ craft items. Deal with these “memory box” type items after you’ve made progress in streamlining other areas first. Don’t start eliminating there. Instead, Josh says a tactic he uses for people to get started is “the 30-day minimalist game.” This helps you start small with things that are easy to let go of so you can build momentum as you minimize. A good place to start might be with clothes you don’t use anymore. Josh also suggests that when it comes to sentimental items, it helps to keep in mind the idea that if everything is precious, nothing is precious. Sometimes we water down the value of things simply by having too many of them. We don’t need nearly as many clothes, or kitchen gadgets, or accessories...

Josh Komenda is the Co-Founder & CEO of Veyo, an affordable rideshare program for those who rely on Medicaid and Medicare. Like Uber/Lyft, the company has a call center that runs a technology platform, but delivers a service in partnership with existing health plans. Veyo is available in the app store.  When Josh’s cab-hailing startup was outshone by emerging rideshare startups, his team began looking at other opportunities in the ride-hailing market. They realized the medical transportation sector was lacking and antiquated so they set out to build a startup that met that need. 4:17 Josh shares details about the start of his entrepreneurial career as an intern at Qualcomm in San Diego. At the tech giant, he led a global engineering team from 2004-2010. Technology interested him from a young age, so Qualcomm gave him a chance to get familiar with the industry to eventually start his own venture. 6:40 Josh discusses his first startup idea, GoFastCab, which he and his friends launched in 2009 to make the ordering of cabs and taxis easier. Little did they know rideshare startups would disrupt the entire ride-hailing industry. Total Transit eventually hired him and his team, allowing them to further explore their goals.  11:10 In 2013, Total Transit acquired GoFastCab, and hired Josh and his team to ensure more widely available and higher quality service in a new health care transportation venture, Veyo. 15:28 Josh explains Veyo’s business model. Like Uber and Lyft, a plurality of the company’s employee population runs its call center.  17:39 Veyo’s average customers are health payers, so the transportation benefit is primarily catered towards those who struggle with gaining access to transportation services in the moment. Healthcare providers partnered with Veyo help book and manage claims/trips, taking into account the customers’ insurance and maximum benefit. Company growth is generally geographic and insurance based. 23:55 Covid has pushed the startup to make a significant amount of adaptations, as there is a concern regarding the risk of infections spreading. Recently, Veyo contracted with Meals on Wheels to help the nonprofit deliver thousands of meals. Veyo drivers also delivered PPE to at-risk Medicaid members. Lastly, the startup also started an initiative to safely transport those who have been infected by Covid. Josh plans for Veyo to continue taking some of these safety precautions even after the pandemic ends.  Listen in as Josh takes us through his entrepreneurial journey, going from cab-hailing to health care transportation, and the changes he has had to make in light of the pandemic. Crosscut re-released Josh’s CD, “Deep Roots,” as “I’m Gonna Be Ready.” In October 2012, Josh’s CD, “Don’t Give Up On Me,” was released in Germany.Josh continues to live in the Los Angeles area with his wife and two children.

Josh Rageth is a 4th grade teacher, that has been teaching now for 7 years. In his first year, Josh began selling lesson plans on occasion for a third-party lesson plan site. (34:00) Show Notes Two years ago Josh and his wife found out they were pregnant. They were already starting to figure out ways to make more money. However, that pregnancy was a very hard one on his wife and she ended up having to leave her job as a Special Education Assistant. So in turn Josh had to double-down on selling lesson plans, so that he could provide for his family. Josh began making new week-long lesson plans for a different picture book every day! These lesson plans were made for existing books, he basically made these lesson plans for specific books. He did this for 223 days straight! These lesson plans help teachers out. If the teacher needed a lesson plan on this specific book, they could buy his plans and they had all the activities for the entire week. It started out with books that Josh was using in class. Then, he moved onto 1st - 3rd grade popular books, because that's where picture books are most needed. The lesson plans started giving him $2/month, then $10/month. Now, for about the last year Josh is making over $1,000 each month! It took a large volume of traffic to get there. At $2.75 or $3 a piece, it takes a lot of sales to get that number! To do this, he utilize SEO and how to drive searches to him. Josh was listening to a lot of podcasts about being a “teacher-preneur” and while talking to other people, he kept hearing people recommendation the Flip Your Life community. He spent his summer listening to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast!   Take action! We saw Josh in our community posting about how he was taking action. Josh joined the Flip Your Life community and within two weeks he had his membership ready! He took the extra time he had during the Coronavirus pandemic, since he was teaching from home. His goal was to launch before the school year was out, so he did just that! It took a choice. Josh made a choice. He took action. He woke up early. He stayed up late. He did the launch, that's why things are happening!   Launch 101 Josh had a list of 1,200 people when he first launched. Since then, he has been trying to grow that list through Facebook ads and is now up to 1,600 people. That a healthy email list, especially for just launching! When Josh launched he also had 3 beta members. If he can find 3 he can find 300! They are there, he has proven the concept. Josh started out by simply sending an email that said, ‘hey, I'm thinking about starting a membership site, click here if you're interested.' He got around 100 people saying they were interested! So he thought: “Okay, we have 100 people interested.” “Let's start making this membership site.” “Get an email sequence out saying, ‘hey, I'm starting a membership site for all of my lesson plans, not just buying lesson plans here or there. You get a community. We will be supporting each other.'” Then, he emailed his list and let them know the doors were open! We're all here to learn and here's where Josh could have improved: When people hit the button saying they weren't interested, he didn't send the ‘hey my membership site is ope...

Josh Gangaware is a personal trainer based out of South Florida. He has been training clients for 10 years, running the spectrum of demographics. At this point, Josh works primarily with men between the ages of 35-65, typically with low back or shoulder pain, and who enjoy/want to perform better at golf. Josh grew up in Upstate New York. His whole life, he was an athlete. He would play any and all sports, but excelled at baseball and golf. While he was confident playing sports, Josh was a really skinny kid (6’2, 145lbs) and didn’t have a ton of confidence outside of that. He still remembers a friend of his (a girl) making fun of him because she had bigger arms than he did. Josh went to college at Coastal Carolina University, where he majored in Physical Education. By the time he got to his internship, Josh realized the teaching route wasn’t his real passion; he wanted to work with athletes. That was when he realized that having athletic ability wasn’t enough, he needed to look the part, too. Josh started working out regularly during the final semester of his senior year of college to get himself to look like he could actually be a strength and conditioning coach for athletes. (don’t get him wrong, he wanted to look better for the girls too). When Josh started, he was afraid of looking stupid in front of other people, so he didn’t even workout in a gym. He had a couple dumbbells, a curl bar, and a pull-up bar and worked out in his bed room. When Josh got to grad school, he finally broke through the barrier, and started working out in the Rec Center. This is where his love for lifting heavy shit was born. The Transformation Podcast

The stats wouldn’t have predicted Josh McDowell would turn out to be one of the world’s most famous evangelists. Josh’s early life seemed headed for destruction. His dad was drunk just about 24/7 and a man who lived in Josh’s childhood home repeatedly sexually assaulted Josh for much of his young life. That is, until Josh violently threatened him to never touch him again. Josh’s anger being used as a tool to attempt to bring some order to the chaos of his home was a recurring theme. When Josh’s dad would hit Josh’s mom, Josh would fight him. He’d even tie up his dad in the barn to keep him from embarrassing the family when guests came over. In frustration he even swore off his belief in a good, loving God. It’s perhaps no surprise that when Josh came of age and enrolled at community college, Josh became antagonistic to a group of Christian students that attempted to love him. The group’s joy and kindness frustrated Josh and he set out to disprove their belief using all the tools of modern academia. Josh even saved up and flew himself to the other side of the world to study in Europe’s great libraries. He had hoped to disprove the truth of Jesus’ resurrection. Instead, he wound up believing the truth that it had indeed happened as described in the pages of scripture. Josh surrendered to Christ in the months that followed that epiphany and God began to move in His life powerfully. After being discipled by a local pastor for some time, he was encouraged to confront his dad and forgive him. Hesitantly, Josh followed through with setting up a time to meet with his dad. When he did, all that came out of his mouth was “I love you.” Those words had a profound effect on teh senior McDowell, and he ended up giving his life to Christ sometime later. The change in him was so radical that his small town immediately took notice and, before too long, others came to Christ. Josh’s mom passed away and he never got to speak to her about Christ. Then, a few years into his walk with Jesus, Josh’s dad passed away. This left Josh without family and pondering the state of his mother’s soul. One day, he was praying and asking God to show him whether his mom had ever surrendered her life to him. Josh thought this prayer would likely never be answered, but 90 minutes later, as he walked a pier not far from his seminary campus in California, he ran into a sweet older lady fishing on the doc. The lady struck up conversation and mentioned that she had family in the same town in Michigan Josh was from. It turned out that this lady was Josh’s aunt, his mom’s sister. Finding out that this woman was very dedicated to God, he asked if his mom had ever given her life to Christ. His aunt told him the incredible story of her and Josh’s mom giving their lives to Christ at a tent revival meeting as teenagers. The Lord had brought them together that day, thousands of miles from Josh’s home, in order to answer Josh’s prayer for assurance as well as to address Josh’s lack of family. Listen to the full story as well as hear Josh’s parenting and discipleship advice in this week’s episode. Audio above! HIGHLIGHTS Josh shared on his 7 keys to effective parenting with Justin (link below). Josh's real name is "Jos" but when he was a school athlete, someone printed it "Josh" in that paper and it stuck. 8 years ago, when dear friend Nate Elsen introduced me to Josh Sprague, I had no way of knowing the impact he'd have on my journey. I know Josh would genuinely and humbly deflect being called an inspiration - but defining the word as 'the act of influencing opinons' definitely applies here. Many examples exist for me as an entrepreneur, but they mostly are two dimensional - in books, magazines, the interwebs. When Orange Mud was in Colorado, and I saw first hand the growth, challenges, work and perseverance Josh, his family and his team put in. That provided inspiration, and continually influenced my opinion of myself and the Warmfront as a company, believing that I could do this too. Not only to grow and succeed, but to do it the right way - learning and doing with enthusiasm. When Josh and I booked this podcast, it was on the trail. I was riding, he was hiking with his kids. I've borrowed so many ideas from Josh and Orange Mud, but the one that I never forget is the WHY and HOW to run a company. No matter how busy he is with training or working, he always took my call, or returned an email within minutes. He taught me how to do product photography, and so many other skills that helped The Warmfront take a step forward.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Strength Through The Struggle

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 10, 2019 13:12

I am a big Allman Brothers fan. I have been since I was a teenager. After Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident, I became a fan of Gregg Allman as a solo artist. There's a song Gregg wrote titled These Days. It's really about regret. And, more specifically, the regret of a relationship that came to an end. The first time I heard the song, the last line got my attention. Let me share it with you. Please don't confront me with my failure. I'm aware of it. For me, it isn't just about the regret of a relationship ending but the regret we all feel when we have made a poor choice or when things haven't gone our way. When talking about the statement, I've frequently made a small adjustment. Please don't confront me with my failures. I'm aware of them. One thing that would get to me when I was growing up was to have my shortcomings or failures brought up to me repeatedly. Not the run of the mill kind of failure like 2+2=5. But the kinds that were a big deal. Like not being liked for who I was being seen as inherently bad because of a stupid choice I made as a child But there are other places where we can be reminded of how we don't maybe measure up with the crowd or what is defined as normal. There have been many times when I have been in a doctor or therapist's office with my son Josh. If you aren't aware of his situation, When Josh was three years old, he was riding in the back seat of his mother's Chevy Cavalier, when a semi-truck hit them which sent the car spinning out of control. That semi kept ongoing and hasn't ever been found. When the car Josh was in stopped spinning, it was hit by another semi-truck which totaled the Cavalier. While that truck stopped, it had nothing to do with causing the accident. That driver was a victim of the first truck, just like Josh. The collision left Josh with a massive brain injury. Ever since that day, he has lived between the world of people with disabilities and those without having recovered partially but never wholly. So back to the doctor and therapist visit. In the past, I had to answer the professional's questions because Josh couldn't. As he gained more and more awareness, he could tell we were talking about him. The more he understood about himself, the more difficult being at these appointments became for Josh. Eventually, he began to cry after being in an appointment and having to listen to all the things that he needed to work on in therapies in order to keep healing. He couldn't understand that it wasn't his fault. He just heard that there was something wrong with him. He's being reminded not of any failure on his part, but of his differences. And for him, those differences are both perceived and real. The differences are noticeable because he can compare himself to others now. He was, and still is, reminded of a day that changed his life completely every time we go to a doctor or therapy appointment. He is much better at handling it now that he is 17 and he can see his life in a more positive light, but it still gets to him. Something that many of us are good at is reminding others of their failures and their differences. We often believe we are doing it out of care or concern or even love. And possibly that is true. Sometimes though, it comes from another place. A not so kind place. A place where we may actually enjoy reminding them of their failure, or misstep or how they are different. I remind them of their failure for the benefit of reminding them of their failure. If you ever find yourself or someone else being overly critical in reminding someone of their shortcomings, there is a way to turn that upside down and make it work for both you and them. Being a teacher, I have to make corrections to students' actions. The more I point out the mistake the more likely that person is to repeat it. Even if I tell them what to do to correct it, if I come from the negative, the thing I don't want to be repeated, more that person's mind is drawn to that mistake and the more that mistake is re-inforced. What I have found that works best is to focus on the thing I want to see more of as opposed to the thing I don't want to see. For instance, if a student is misbehaving, I can highlight and praise different students' correct or positive behavior. We all want attention. In a perfect world, we would only do good things and seek positive attention. But if we don't get what we want, we often change tactics. It's amazing to watch a child who is not getting the positive attention from a teacher, sit straight up, keep their hands to themselves and focus when you point out how well their classmate is doing those very things. It works with adults as well. I can't count how many times I've complimented an adult student and actually had the other students in class adjust their own effort to match the person being complimented. We all want to be noticed... the key is to teach ourselves to focus on what we want, not what we don't want. It is easier for an adult or a child to see what is wanted as opposed to what is not wanted. Of course, people need to be reminded of things. Including to look both ways when crossing the street. Don't play with fire. Be nice to others. What we don't need is someone who is all too ready to confront us with our failures. We are already aware of them. Thanks Gregg!

Thank you very much to Julia for commissioning this episode! This episode was for some reason so much harder to watch than the last one, and I think maybe a big part of that has to do with sincerity. In the last episode, the inappropriate pole-dance is accompanied by denial and no self-awareness. This time, her humiliation is inflicted while she's attempting to be emotionally vulnerable, and I think that's why it came across so much more harshly. When Josh laughs in her face (a totally valid response, I must say) she's fully aware that she is in love with him, and wanting his approval, so of course it hits harder. Man, I don't know what to think about this sequence of events because I didn't really want her and Josh together but it seems like they're sort of pushing them together and even though in some ways I'm resistant, I can't help but start to root from them. I guess we'll see! Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you again soon with a new episode!

American Splendor scene #24 (1:10:45 to 1:14:55) — The scene opens back at Shay’s Diner. Another patron recognizes Harvey from the Letterman show — but not for the right reasons. Our man is angry and unfulfilled. Meanwhile, Joyce is looking for fulfillment of her own — as a creator and as an activist. Against Harvey’s wishes, she goes away to a peace conference, leaving him at loose ends. One lonely night, Harvey discovers a mysterious lump; his fear and loneliness are directed outward. Harvey’s co-dependency; Need vs. Love. How the fact that this film was written/directed by a husband-and-wife team really comes into play here. An in-depth discussion of shading film and other Old School toning techniques. What do Robin Williams, Jack Clark, Bucky Dent, Mister Rogers, and Busta Rhymes all have in common? Fame vs. integrity, turning down jobs, and being mistaken for a celebrity. Spending time apart from your spouse. When Josh started doing trips with the U.S. State Dept. American Splendor scene #17 (41:38 to 44:32) — Joyce travels to Cleveland to meet Harvey in person — but will he be a “hairy ape” or a “young Brando?” The real Harvey sidles into frame. His opening line? "You might as well know right off the bat, I had a vasectomy.” The date begins with a handshake and dinner at a local family restaurant. Josh & Dean talk to special guest Val Mayerik about his five years as one of American Splendor’s primary artists, his thoughts on Harvey and his work, and the question if there is any connection between Cleveland icons Harvey Pekar and Howard the Duck! Vegetarianism, self-diagnosing, and hypochondria. An appreciation of Hope Davis (and her wig). Life In the Carolina's Podcast

On this episode of the Life in the Carolinas podcast, Carl is joined by Gary Bashears, his son Josh, and a brother he recently met for the first time, Dennis Proctor. Wilkes County barber, Gary Bashears, received a call toward the end of 2018 that would be life changing. His son, Josh had been working on their family genealogy for some time. While he was enjoying the process, he wanted to go further back in time and see if he could find out more about his family origins. Josh was curious about the possible information that an Ancestry DNA test might reveal. So, one day he ordered the test, followed the directions and patiently awaited the results. When they arrived, what he discovered was far more than he had ever imagined. Josh was looking for his family’s roots; He was not expecting to find a close family member he knew nothing about, but that’s exactly what happened. This Carolina story has several interesting twists and it all started before Josh was born. Some 50 years ago in Michigan, a young boy by the name of Dennis Proctor was doing a bit of exploring in his parents’ room. He had no idea that the box he would find and open on that day would set him on a lifelong journey.  The contents of the box lead Dennis to believe that the man he knew as his father was not actually his biological father. Filled with confusion and emotions, he ran to his grandmother’s house; she listened and together they shared tears as she was unable to answer the question as to who his birth father was. That was the start of a 50-year journey that would lead a man from Michigan to the third-generation barber shop at the top of second Street Hill in North Wilkesboro. Many things would happen between those younger years and now. Dennis would have many great adventures in life including a career as a history teacher and a passion for capturing images of wildlife. Dennis would also make family trips to the Shelby, NC area to visit the Proctor side of his family. Meanwhile in Wilkes County, a young boy, Gary always wanted a brother. He was envious of others who had brothers to go hunting, fishing and just to share life with. When Josh first called to let him know that he may have a brother, it took a little while for it to sink in. When asked how he felt about it, his very natural and likely common response was “I’m not really sure how to feel about it. If we had known each other when we were younger, he could have come to visit and spend the summer. At least we would have had the opportunity to grow up together.” But that’s not the way it worked out. After several emails and calls, Dennis ask Josh if he thought Gary would do the DNA test as well. Gary agreed and when the results arrived it seemed to make the case even stronger that they are indeed family. With this news, Dennis invited the Bashear family to visit Michigan. He even offered to send the airplane tickets to fly everyone up. There was only one problem with this offer, Gary always stays close to home and an airplane flight was not an option. With this development, talks of a Carolina trip started and the schedule was set for a June visit that would coincide with the Bashears family reunion. The day arrived when Dennis and his wife pulled up in Gary’s driveway. Gary said when he saw Dennis get out of the pickup it was just like seeing his dad 20 years ago. Nephew Josh was also part of the welcome committee. Gary said it was like they had known each other their whole life.    Josh got more than he bargained for when he ordered that DNA test. He now has a new uncle, Gary finally has the brother he’s always wanted, and while Dennis did not get to meet his birth father before he died, he now knows who he was, and he did find a brother and that’s a wonderful thing.

In this episode of TrueFire Live, we sit down with blues guitarist extraordinaire, Josh Smith, to discuss his guitar masterclass course, Blue Highways. To learn more and watch the video from this live session, please visit truefire.com/live.About Josh Smith: Josh Smith was born October 7, 1979 in Middletown, Connecticut.

Perseverance and determination really go a long way. In this episode of Leader Manager Coach Podcast, Rob talks to Josh Gordon from Walsall Football Club to prove that there are things you need more to achieve success, not just your talent. Josh shares his personal stories and everything about his football career. He has been playing at an early age and has been continuing to improve himself in order to be one of the best professional football players out there. Of course, like anybody else, his career wasn’t always filled with rainbows and unicorns. He’s had setbacks, which have been part of his life and have helped him grow stronger. Discover from today’s discussion about how he deals with such challenges and prepares for great opportunities. KEY TAKEAWAYS Josh says starting training early has become fruitful for his football career. Josh has been playing football since he was really young even though his dad could get him inclined into basketball. When Josh was six, he started playing for Stoke City until he was 15. Like any other kids, he used to slack – arrive late during practices and show disinterest. He got disciplined and told he’s just wasting his talents if he continues to act irresponsibly. It came to a point in his career that a lot of teams want him. His coach pushed him harder since he believed in him. This brought him enough motivation to play better and get his name out there. Given that Josh has already told the tales of being kidnapped in Egypt and playing one of the first shows that an American hardcore band in Kenya has played, I was worried that he might not have any stories left for me when he agreed to do this interview. Never fear. Josh delivers the goods - and this is probably the hardest I've laughed during any podcast that I've recorded. Josh has been a full-time touring musician with bands like Evergreen Terrace, Casey Jones, Stick to Your Guns and Eighteen Visions for many, many years. In his spare time, he often travels to countries with unstable governments. As such, he's accumulated a lot of hilarious stories. When Josh is in Chicago, he stops in at South Loop Strength & Conditioning to train, so it's always a treat to get to chat with someone who likes the two things that I like: heavy music and extreme fitness programs. Note: There was an issue with Josh's mic during the first 10 minutes or so of the podcast. We caught the issue and fixed it - and I did a little bit of post-production management to adjust the levels - so just skip the beginning part of the quieter audio is annoying. Apologies for that! Unless you've lived without a TV for the past decade or so, you probably recognize Josh Radnor. The actor--who is also a skilled writer, director, and musician--has been immortalized in the eyes of the public as Ted Mosby, the goofy and hyper-romantic protagonist of the hit series How I Met Your Mother, which ran on CBS from 2005 to 2014. In real life, though, Josh will be the first to tell you that in many ways, he and his fictional counterpart are worlds apart. When Josh sits down with Sam to track his life and career--from realizing in high school that performance was his solution to insecurity, to bringing two feature films to Sundance, to his new series Rise and his musical career with Ben Lee--the impression we're left with is one of determination and deliberation. Josh is brimming with insights from friends, artists, and his own experiences as he and Sam discuss periods of his life during which his dreams were tested, his success complicated, and his interests ever-changing. http://talkeasypod.com/

If you had to define it, could you clearly say what it means for a company to be a “lifestyle brand?” When Josh Stanton first started on his entrepreneurial journey he didn’t know either. In fact, it was the furthest thing from his mind. He just needed to make some money.   His story goes something like this: After a very short stint studying engineering at university, he was exhausted and not enjoying what he was doing, and his Dad recognized the problem. He told Josh, “You don’t have to do this. You can do whatever you want.”   Josh says that was the conversation that enabled him to understand that it was OK for him to take control of his own life and not follow the path everyone else does. So he did.   Today, most people know Josh as one half of the dynamic team behind Screw The Nine To Five, the company and community aimed at becoming the #1 lifestyle brand in the world. In this conversation you’ll hear the backstory of how Josh and his wife have gone from owning random online businesses that felt a lot like corporate jobs, to leaders of an energizing community that empowers those seeking lifestyle freedom.   If Josh can make money selling a goldfish book, you can be an entrepreneur too   The first thing Josh Stanton did to move into the realm of online business was to hire someone to research and ghostwrite a book about the care and feeding of goldfish. Sounds like a strange topic, but he had his reasons. The book was written, Josh got it formatted, put it on Amazon, and began selling it - to the tune of $15,000 in total sales.   It may not sound like much of a business… but most people never step out to create anything of their own. $15K earned from a simple book, in his first attempt, was all it took for Josh to see that he really could support himself independent of someone else writing him a paycheck.   Your first effort as an entrepreneur doesn’t have to be world-changing. In fact, it’s probably better if it’s not. The lessons you learn in those initial forays into the online business world  are what teach you the things you need to know in order to make a difference over the long haul. Josh describes his own meandering path to success in detail in this conversation.   Why Josh Stanton sold money-making businesses to pursue something greater   As Josh and Jill become more successful as entrepreneurs, they had their hands in many different types of online businesses. There were many affiliate relationships, skin care brands, health care products that filled their bank account each month. The Screw The Nine To Five Community was also starting to take off.   But it wasn’t as satisfying as Josh had assumed it would be. All those unrelated, random businesses started to feel like drudgery, something he didn’t really want to work on anymore. Sounds kind of like a corporate job, doesn’t it?   After discussing what they really wanted to contribute to the world, Josh and Jill decided to sell those businesses and put all their focus into Screw The Nine To Five. That decision proves to have been exactly the right choice for them. They have plans to make it the #1 Lifestyle Brand in the world. Their focus now is on helping others achieve success in three specific areas: business, health, and life.   How does one go about building a world-changing lifestyle brand? Josh reveals the ups and the downs of the Screw The Nine To Five journey, in this episode of Corporate Escapees. Do you know how to make the decision about who your ideal customer is?   When Josh and Jill first began Screw The Nine To Five they were focused on helping people start businesses and develop ways of producing side income. All of that is fine, but they discovered that many people were following along without committing to make their own lifestyle dreams happen.   That’s when they decided to narrow their focus by identifying their ideal customers. Rather than targeting anyone who was interested in learning about generating online income they decided to find those who are truly ready to start their own business. That subtle shift has enabled them to scale their business faster than ever before.   In this conversation Josh describes how they’ve learned to identify that target audience, how strategic partnerships enable them to help their audience with less effort, and why Facebook Ads have turned out to be unreliable in terms of long-term business success. Those are powerful lessons-learned you can benefit from, so be sure you hear them on this episode.   Members of the Screw The Nine To Five Community are given the opportunity to give back   The Screw The Nine To Five community is a dynamic place where those who are building their own businesses come together for support, resources, and training. It’s the main way Josh and Jill empower others to create the same kind of lifestyle they have.   But they want more for their members than business success. They also want to help them give back through their success. That’s why they are working to establish relationships with 3 non-profits. Every monthly member will soon be able to select one of those charities as the recipient of a percentage of their membership fee each month.   As you can see, Josh and Jill are eager for their lifestyle brand to do more than equip people to make money, they want to nurture a mindset that truly gives back in significant ways.   This is a great conversation that reveals many of the strategies Josh and Jill have used to establish their business and empower others to create the lifestyle they want. And now for something completely different! This week on Escrow Out Loud, our San Francisco Real Estate podcast, we interview our first guests. Josh and Carlos are clients who purchased their San Francisco home in a very different market – they purchased a REO property during the downturn. They termed the phrase “Shivering Heights” for their neighborhood and they agreed to let us come over to their house, interview them about buying in San Francisco, and just chat about owning a home in SF. It's a 3 episode interview, this is part 1 and covers our drive over and the beginning part of our home tour. It was still a bit messy since the have recently started renovation.[00:33] When Josh and Carlos bought their house the property market in San Francisco was completely different than it is today – in fact, we were in the midst of a property downturn. Seven years later, we visit them at their place to see how they have settled in![01:47] We kick off part one of our three-part interview with Matt questioning the suitability of using the Comic Sans font on the first page of the REO addendum document. REO addendums are horrible things that haven't been a regular part of the SF market since the last down turn. What is it about that font that screams unprofessional? Everything![03:06] As we arrive at their San Francisco home we meet our client’s huuuuge, Scooby Doo-like dog and hear his story.Fixer-upper[08:34] Starting in the foyer, it is clear Josh and Carlos have done quite a bit of renovating since we last saw their place! What was once sad and neglected but a huge amount of space is now a beautifully updated, very functional, modern space.[12:03] It is great to see how well they have settled into their new home, meeting their neighbors, and what it was like getting to know their new neighborhood.[17:27] We talk about how different the market was back in 2011, but even then getting your first offer accepted was rare. Prices have sky-rocketed since then… Tune in next week for part two, where we learn some more fascinating things about their home and the remodel they did. How to Sell Your Business to a Strategic Buyer

Have you ever wondered what the perfect strategic sale looks like? On today’s show, we’re going to be talking to Josh Elizetxe, who was extremely successful at managing his company at a very young age. Within six months of deciding to sell, Josh successfully created a market and sold his company to one of his strategic partners. He’s going to share some of the best wisdom and insight that we’ve had on this show. Tune in to learn what Josh learned, what he’d have done differently, and what he’s up to now. In this episode, you’ll learn: When Josh decided to become an entrepreneur and how he decided to take the lead in his venture. Some of the goals Josh made and milestones he met as he snowballed his company from startup to success. Some of the benchmarks that Josh had been tracking mentally so he knew he had gotten to the point where it made sense to sell. The trigger when Josh knew that he was not doing what he should have been doing. How Josh managed all of the factors that go into the decision to sell, the tactical strategies he used, and his tips on making the transition. Thoughts on valuing a company and setting a price, as well as convincing a potential buyer that the company is worth that price. How Josh picked the partner he picked and how he removed emotion from the decision. How do you value the power of your own two hands? Josh Elizetxe learned just how valuable building something from nothing can be, particularly in the digital world. Today’s podcast explores how to properly build a successful and profitable business out of nothing and capitalize on its specifics for a strategic sell for the highest dollar. What do you need to do to be a successful entrepreneur? Simply put: work for it. Josh poured all he had into his work. Starting at the age of fifteen, Josh immersed himself in his hobby of computers (learning about them, playing on them, and eventually building websites on them) until he was a master of his craft. It took time, energy and prioritization. What Makes You Unique? Josh was surprised to hear from advertisers after he started his blog. He had built something for himself which was a labor of love — his first blog was about the new iPhone coming out (which he coveted) and was the tech review that has become standard today. He was before the curve. This is vital in being successful, we all know, so how can you take the product you have (or hobby or service) and capitalize on it? This is your time to shine. Find what makes you unique in the market and customize what you’re offering to further help yourself stand out. Josh did this by accident. But he capitalized on it with intention. Say Yes After he built his first blog site for himself, he started hearing from advertisers. This was at a time when the Internet was still an enigma and there was no trust in transactions conducted on it

In this episode… The Real Estate Investing arena is fraught with dangers in the form of fraudulent schemes run by “experts” who line their pockets with other people’s money and give half-proven or untried systems in return. It can be a very difficult space to be in if you care about doing things ethically, honestly, and with integrity.   Joshua Dorkin felt all of that when he first began making money in real estate. His first purchase was a California condominium that gave him a pretty good return, so he began looking into what it might take to become proficient at real estate investing. What he found discouraged him and he realized, there’s no “safe” place to go for trusted advice and reliable resources.   In concept, that’s where BiggerPockets was born. When Josh first created the site he used it as a community/forum for people in the acting industry (he was an actor at the time) but quickly transitioned it into a real estate investing themed site and community. It’s now THE biggest site in the industry and is the hub for a podcast, forums, resources, a publishing house, and more.   In this conversation of Inspired Insider Dr. Jeremy Weisz asks Joshua to share his journey, from his humble beginnings as the son of an entrepreneurial single mom, to business school (which he hated), to the pursuit of an acting career in California, and finally, into the realm of real estate investing and the birth of BiggerPockets.   Joshua Dorkin is a humble guy, but confident and encouraged at the difference his efforts have made in the real estate investment space. He’s one of those guys who latches on like a pit bull once he knows what he wants to accomplish and never lets go until he’s done it. BiggerPockets is a testament to that sort of work and determination.   Be sure to listen to this inspiring interview to find out how you can get connected with Joshua and the community over at www.BiggerPockets.com.   Resources Mentioned on this episode www.BiggerPockets.com www.BiggerPockets.com/podcast Get the book Josh mentioned: www.BiggerPockets.com/UBG

In today’s episode, we put our co-host Josh Marsden on the hot seat! You will find out what Josh’s personal Utopia is that he is aiming for, what makes him happy, and why. Like many single hard-working entrepreneurs, Josh is looking for that one person that makes him feel complete. The challenge is finding that one person when you are trying to run a successful company, it takes so much time! Josh loves two Benjamins, for good reasons. Find out what shaped Build Your Utopia’s other half in his early years and the struggles that he saw as a child that molded him to be a money-motivated, success-driven, Type A, hard working, ambitious man. As hard as it was for Josh to share this, he speaks about some of the the fights he saw as a child, how his relationship with his father impacts him today, and what he wants for his son, Benjamin. What you will find here are several examples of how Josh takes negatives throughout his life and turns them into positives. When college didn’t work out the first time, he partied.. POSITIVE. When Josh didn’t have money, he took out credit cards… POSITIVE. When early adulthood didn’t go as planned.. the military came calling… POSITIVE. Which positives are actual positives? Find out in this episode. Finally, if you need a private PLUS college loan, just sign your mother’s name on the loan application. It works.. Turn off the switch of insanity from being plugged into your business or goals, relax, and listen to this show. On a closing note, having too many goals.. can be overwhelming. As always, a special thank you to The Strand for our intro and outro music! Utopian Quote of the Show “We all have subjective eyes to a realistic lens” - Josh Marsden

I'm going to be honest for a moment. When Josh and I started working together, we felt like we were the only couple out there doing the entrepreneurial thing together. We felt very out of place in Toronto. After packing our bags and moving to Thailand, things got a bit easier because we were surrounded by so many like-minded people. We were still craving that couple connection though. You know what I mean...that couple you just jive with, can talk for hours with, laugh with, be honest with, and share the struggles with. About a year ago I stumbled across UK couple Mish and Rob from MakingItAnywhere.com. Now, these two have a wickedly successful business - or should I say businesses; they have 5! - and have an incredible story. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Leigh Whannell and James Wan, the creators of the Saw series, and Jason Blum and Oren Peli, the creators of the Paranormal Activity series, came together in 2011 to give us Insidious, a supernatural horror thriller. When it was played at festival circuits, Sony Pictures immediately picked it up less than twelve hours after its initial screening. Whatever the "suits" saw was transposed to general audiences since this low budget film made for approximately $1,500,000 went on to gross $100,000,000. When Josh and Renai Lambert move into a new home with their three children, their young son Dalton falls into an unexplained coma. Soon odd disturbances begin to happen which forces the family to move once more to another house. Unfortunately whatever was haunting them seems to have followed them to their new address. When Josh's mother confesses a surprising secret that results in the arrival of paranormal investigators, the Lamberts begin a battle versus outer beings in a desperate fight to save their son's soul. A throwback to such films as Poltergeist, The Omen, and The Exorcist, Insidious fits nicely in the pantheon of ghostly horror films that work equally for genre fans, critics, and general audiences alike. Your hosts of Dark Discussions converse about the film and the recently released follow up, Insidious: Chapter 2. The good news: In 2231, twenty-five billion people walk the Earth. Most of them have basic food and shelter, and a few have much, much more. Among them are the SuperOld, who believe the promise of immortality will soon be within reach. Energy is cheap and abundant, most who are willing to work can find it, and a vast army of ‘bots serves man’s needs. The bad news: The Earth is depleted of key resources, which are now harvested on or around Mars. We are ruled from above by corrupt, bloated governments funded by enormously wealthy transnationals, and from below by powerful, ruthless street gangs. About a fifth of the world’s population has withdrawn into the drug Nirvana, while millions more have chosen the legal purgatory of Martian exile. Emerging mysteries abound: Some of the SuperOld are ending their lives, while in China millions starve to death despite massive foreign aid. Overseeing the world’s affairs and managing its systems is the omnipresent, manmade sentient entity called MOM. And MOM is not happy. Neither is a phantom group known as ‘The Patriots of Mars’, which jettisons the contents of an orbiting freighter into space to call attention to its demands. This sets off an escalating chain of events in which the powerful seek more power, and everyone else seeks cover. Josh Reynolds, a Martian-born 12-year-old with a strange secret, is looking to change his life when he gets caught up in this tide of events. Along the way he encounters an old, discredited prophesy and begins to understand that the change he and others had hoped for could become something more far-reaching than anyone had imagined. When Josh finally learns the identity of The Patriots of Mars, he is burdened with yet another secret. It is one he can never reveal, and it will change his life forever.
