Scotty talks to Bram Stoker and Shirley Jackson Award-winning author, editor, anthologist, and publisher Eric J. Guignard about growing up in sunny southern California, how his early interest in "Hardy Boys" adventure novels combined with his fascination with the short horror tale to craft his own unique sensibility, and how--after the 2008 financial crash--he finally decided to pursue his dreams of becoming a writer. Scotty and Eric then do a deep dive into Eric's award-winning collection ""That Which Grows Wild: 16 Tales of Dark Fiction" (2018, Cemetary Dance), and discuss Eric's Stoker-nominated novel "Doorways to the Deadeye" (2019, Journalstone) Eric also talks about taking over and operating the horror press Dark Moon Books, his passion for publishing quality fiction anthologies, and what it's like editing legendary authors like Joe R. Lansdale and Bentley Little. And, of course, they spend a few minutes at the end talking about a movie. This time the film in question is the underrated direct-to-video prequel "From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter"--a surprisingly effective mashup of the Spaghetti Western and the B-vampire flick. Alvaro Rodriguez has been writing since childhood and, in fact, did his best work when he was 11. Without a movie camera in sight, Rodriguez relied on the written word and a Polaroid Button to storyboard the films in his head. A crash course in entertainment writing and editing at the University of Texas student newspaper and seminars in creative writing supplied more tools for the toolbox. When he riffed on a Spanish guitar figure as the hero's musical theme in cousin Robert Rodriguez's debut film, El Mariachi (1992) (Columbia Pictures, 1993), he began a collaboration that has lasted more than two decades.Rodriguez sold his first pitch to Dimension Films, a spaghetti-western prequel to the genre-bending vampire flick From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) called From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter (1999) (Miramax/Dimension, 2000), which starred Marco Leonardi, Michael Parks, Sonia Braga, Rebecca Gayheart and Danny Trejo, with Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino producing.Rodriguez co-wrote the wishing-rock children's movie Shorts (2009) (Warner Brothers, 2009), starring James Spader, Jon Cryer, Leslie Mann, and William H. Macy, and followed that confection with the bloodier Machete (2010) (Fox, 2010) starring Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Jeff Fahey, Don Johnson, and Robert De Niro. Both were directed by Robert Rodriguez. As of 2014, he is writing on the television series From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series (2014) for the El Rey Network, now in its second season, and is developing feature and television projects in the United States and Italy.A frequent panelist and presenter at the Austin Film Festival, he has also curated an "Epoca de Oro" Mexican film series at the Museum of South Texas History and has been a speaker at colleges and universities throughout the United States. His border-influenced short fiction has appeared in multiple publications, both physical and digital, including Mulholland Books/Popcorn Fiction, "Along the River" (2011), and the Bram Stoker Award-winning "After Death" (2013).This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2664729/advertisement

Later today, the Powerhouse Animation cast and crew will be holding another watch-party for their epic, action-packed Mexicanime series Seis Manos. The Saturday Mourning Cartoons team wanted to get in on the Saturday-morning fun, so not only will we be re-watching the Viz Media series on Netflix again (and again and again), we're also bringing you a bit of bonus coverage for it! The creative team behind the kung fu / grindhouse / Blaxploitation mash-up series will take to social media once again to offer episode commentary to fans as they watch, along with never-before-seen content from behind the scenes, intriguing trivia, and more on the show's mythology and lore. And we were lucky enough to sit down with co-creators Brad Graeber and Alvaro Rodriguez, and co-executive producer / writer Daniel Dominguez to get even more insight on Seis Manos. To our surprise, the team revealed that it was Powerhouse's early creation of a fight-focused sizzle reel for Seis Manos that helped them seal the deal to be the animation studio for Castlevania. And it was the success of Castlevania that gave Powerhouse the clout to go ahead with their first original production, Seis Manos. That's just one of the many examples of the fates aligning for the studio in their attempt to bring this incredibly rich, diverse, and uniquely compelling story to folks around the world. Graeber, Rodriguez, and Dominguez were also quick to thank their fanbase who have shown support online, at cons, and through sharing Seis Manos with their friends and followers. We even get a tease for potential sequel seasons and a tip or two on what to do to make sure we get to see more Seis Manos in the future. - Support the Show through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/saturdaymourningcartoons - Want to find our cohosts online? This week on On Story we’ll hear from showrunners Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas on their CBS original series, S.W.A.T. And later, we explore the horror genre with writers Andrew Kevin Walker, C. Robert Cargill and Alvaro Rodriguez. Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas are the showrunners behind the new procedural television series reboot, S.W.A.T. Set in Los Angeles, the crime drama is based on the 1975 television series of the same name and follows a locally born and bred S.W.A.T. lieutenant. The series premiered on CBS in 2017 and is currently slated for a 3rd season premiere in October. I spoke to Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas during a joint programming year-round event in partnership with Humanitas in Los Angeles earlier this year. Clips of S.W.A.T courtesy of CBS Television Studios and Sony Pictures Television Next up, we explore the horror genre with writers Andrew Kevin Walker, C. Robert Cargill and Alvaro Rodriguez. Andrew Kevin Walker is the writer behind Se7en, Brainscan, and Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. He’s also written for HBO's Tales from the Crypt and Perversions of Science. Robert Cargill is a novelist, former film critic, and co-writer on Marvel’s Doctor Strange and both Sinister films. Alvaro Rodriguez is the writer behind Robert Rodriguez’s breakthrough film El Mariachi and Machete. Rodriguez is executive producer/co-creator of Seis Manos, a Netflix original adult-animated series, premiering in October. The three spoke with Fantastic Fest co-founder Paul Alvarado-Dykstra during a panel held during the 25th Anniversary of Austin Film Festival. Clips of Seven courtesy of New Line Productions, Inc. Seis Manos marks the first major adult animation centered on a Latinx story, specifically a Mexican story. Set in 1970s Mexico, Seis Manos revolves around three orphans trained in Chinese martial arts, Isabela (Aislinn Derbez), Jesus (Jonny Cruz), and Silencio. When their mentor is killed, they join forces with an American DEA agent, played by Mike Colter and a Mexican police officer (Angélica Vale) to avenge their master's murder. Coming next week on October 3rd, I have been excited for this series since it was announced. This week, I got a chance to speak with series co-creator, executive producer, and writer Alvaro Rodriguez to discuss the series and get ready for its release. Here, Rodriguez dives into the influences from exploitation cinema and how it allows writers and creators to "smuggle" larger themes into their work under the guise of action and comedy. We also get a chance to talk about the important step that Seis Manos and Cannon Busters serves, and how these stories would probably not be getting the spotlight without Netflix and Viz Media's collaboration. So sit back, hit play, and get ready to dive into the world of Seis Manos. Seis Manos airs exclusively on Netflix on October 3, 2019. Follow Alavaro Rodriguez on Twitter, @alrodz.

Action scenes can be some of the most memorable moments in a film but without a good story to support them they can fall flat. The most intricately choreographed fight sequence or heart pounding car chase is only effective if it furthers the story. Machete writer Alvaro Rodriguez spoke with Gone in 60 Seconds and Armageddon writer Scott Rosenberg, Deadpool and Zombieland writer Rhett Reese, and Hulk writer John Turman about writing effective action scenes at the 18th annual Austin Film Festival in 2011. Bobby Farrelly has spent over twenty years redefining broad comedy. Alongside his brother Peter, the brothers have written and directed cult favorites like Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Shallow Hal, and Me, Myself & Irene. Actor John Merriman spoke with Farrelly at the 23rd annual Austin Film Festival in 2016.
