This week we had him on the show to discuss a wide variety of topics starting with his most recent project titled “Amorous”. Similar to recent artists we've talked with he told us how creating an alternate version of the album helped him to push it to a wider audience and experiment with different genres. He told us more about the Austin music scene and what his approach has been to pursing a career especially over the consistent run he's been on since 2019. Terrence also revealed his plans for a 2025 album that will be an even deeper dive into his soulful sound and definitely has us excited to check it out when it releases! Known for an eclectic range of musical styles spanning five decades and an ethereal vocal quality, upon his death in 2019, the artist was described by the BBC as "one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in rock history". Jim's chosen song is featured on the compilation album, Fire Escape in the Sky: The Godlike Genius of Scott Walker, compiled by Julian Cope (Zoo Records). For Jim, who received this album at the age of 18 from his friend, Lisa Godfrey, the introduction to Walker was “a huge gift”.  Also in this episode, special guest Dave Howard shares his song, “Lujon”, by Henry Mancini. While the song is heard in the 2016 Ron Howard Beatles documentary, Eight Days a Week, it was originally released in the 1961 Mancini album, Mr. Lucky Goes Latin. The influence of 1960's orchestral music and “joyful, melodic” crooners like Walker on Howard has long been evidenced through the avant-garde/electronic orchestrations of Howard's former music band/project, The Dave Howard Singers. Here, Howard shares some of his musical influences and reveals the origins of TDHS band name.  Rick McGinnis shares “Se telefonando” by Ennio Morricone, which raises the discussion of the “parallel sixties” with Alan. While Rick and Alan debate who actually coined the term, the concept is that alongside the emergence of psychedelic rock in the latter years of the decade, the era was also popularly known for crooners and orchestral music. As Alan says, “In 1964, Sinatra was king.”  This episode features references to several songs by Scott Walker, Henry Mancini, and Ennio Morricone, and other artists in the genre of orchestral/soundtrack music. “Amatonormativity is the set of societal assumptions that everyone prospers with an exclusive romantic relationship. Elizabeth Brake coined the neologism to capture societal assumptions about romance.[1][2] Brake wanted to describe the pressure she received by many to prioritize marriage in her own life when she did not want to. Amatonormativity extends beyond social pressures for marriage to include general pressures involving romance.[2][3] The word amatonormativity comes from amatus, which is the Latin word for "loved", and normativity, referring to societal norms.[4][1] Another word which is similarly related to the word amatonormativity is amative. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word amative as: strongly moved by love and especially sexual love. Relating to or indicative of love. Amorous is a closely related word also derived from amatus.[5] Related terms include allonormativity, which means a worldview that assumes all people experience sexual and romantic attraction, and compulsory sexuality, which means social norms and practices that marginalizes non-sexuality.[6] The term was modeled after the term heteronormativity, the belief that heterosexuality is the default for sexual orientation.[7] Elizabeth Brake describes the term as a pressure or desire for monogamy, romance, and/or marriage. The desire to find relationships that are romantic, sexual, monogamous, and lifelong has many social consequences. People who are asexual, aromantic, and/or nonmonogamous become social oddities. According to researcher Bella DePaulo, it puts a stigma on single people as incomplete and pushes romantic partners to stay in unhealthy relationships because of a fear the partners may have of being single.[8][1] According to Brake, one way in which amatonormativity is institutionally applied is the law and morality surrounding marriage. The Falcon radio series premiered on the Blue Network on April 10, 1943. Some 70 episodes were produced between 1943 and 1954. Beginning in the late 1930's three very popular novels popularized the character called The Falcon- who was really an investigator named Michael Waring. The Falcon was also the hero in three movies in the 40's- so the character was well established before it hit radio. The radio plots mixed danger, romance and comedy in equal parts. Each show began with a telephone ringing and Michael Waring, the Falcon, answering the phone. Speaking with a woman whose voice was never heard, Waring would explain that he had an urgent situation in which he had to deal with criminals. This led into the standard opening, followed by the week's tale of adventure. Often, incompetent police were unable to solve the mysteries without his help. After some mishaps in the cricket match and Mr. Tupman falling in love with Rachael; and Mr. Snodgrass with Emily, Tupman is outsmarted by the vivacious, unscrupulous Jingle, who elopes with Rachael. Mr. Pickwick and Mr. Wardle pursue Jingle and Rachael to London, where, with the help of a lawyer, Mr. Perker, they buy off Jingle and save Rachael Wardle from an unhappy marriage. They continue on by coach to London and there Mr. Pickwick comes across Sam Weller, a boot cleaner and general handyman whom he promised to take on as a valet, subject to approval from his widowed landlady, Mrs Bardell.
