With the multidisciplinary film program Witch Way Now: Recasting A Feminist Icon heading into its second month of film screenings, talks, workshops, and performances at LAB111 and Paradiso, we invite Witch Way Now co-curator Helena Castro to discuss in-depth the depiction of the witch and witchcraft in cinema. Is the witch a feminist icon? How has the image and interpretation of the witch changed over the decades? And what can we learn about representation through these cinematic perspectives? This and more on this very open-hearted and therefore hour-long episode of Celebrating Cinema. The Witch Way Now film program — a collaboration of LAB111 and Paradiso — will run until the end of June and features such films as La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1928), The Wizard Of Oz (1939), The Love Witch (2016), Suspiria (1977), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) and Belladonna Of Sadness (1973), alongside various in-depth talks, introductions by experts, a Häxan live score performance by ambient duo Wanderwelle, a wicked season closing party and much more. I shouldn't have laughed but I laughedat their flesh dozing into their spines, their bones crunching like snow.Once I was swollen and snowblind with grief, left for deadat the castle door. Then I robbed the castle and kissed my captor,my sadness, learned she was not a villain. To wake up in this verdant field,to watch the lilies flay the lambs. To enter paradise,a woman drinks a vial of amnesia. Found in only the palestflowers, the ones that smell like rotten meat. To summon the stinkyflower and access its truest aroma, you have to let its stigma show. You have to let the pollen sting your eyes until you close them.Support the show

This episode features a frank discussion about the multiple scenes of sexual assault that occur in the film. If that doesn't sound like the sort of thing you'd like to sit through, we'd advise you to sit this installment out. After some poor business decisions from founder Osamu Tezuka, animation studio Mushi Production was in dire financial straits. Thinking that a shift in creative direction would be prudent, Mushi put out a series of animated features with the then bold decision of targeting an adult audience instead of a juvenile one. Belladonna Of Sadness was the third and final attempt in this failed initiative; it sank like a rock at the box office, but gradually grew an appreciative cult audience due to its painterly animation, daring subject matter, and a pristine restoration in the 21st century. Ryan is joined by Sylvan and Cheryl for an extensive look at this parable about witchcraft, class struggle, and religious hypocrisy. Thematic subjects under discussion include historical revisionism, whether Belladonna Of Sadness can be argued as a feminist film, and the subterfuge of patriarchal figures using countercultural posturing in order to sneak into progressive spaces (this episode was recorded shortly after sexual harassment and workplace abuse allegations were made against writer/director Joss Whedon). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support

Well, well, well, it seems like the Crit Club took their recent fascination with adult animation just a bit too far this week as we try to shake off the patina of slime that 1973's Belladonna of Sadness dipped us in. While we expected to watch an animated, mature-themed romp, fate had other, crueler plans. We're not even going to hide our attempt to tease you into listening for our opinions: this was a wretched movie and we talked about its wretchedness. Other things (that were much nicer) that we discussed: - Tokyo Godfathers - The Witch - Perfect Blue - Paprika - Amelie - Point Break - Mulholland Drive - John of God - Midnight Mass - The Righteous Gemstones - Titane Join us next week while we shake off this trash and watch the avant garde 1966 Czechoslovakian surrealists adventure Daisies. I promise we will roll higher on this one. And drop us a line! You can email us at critclubcast@gmail.com or find us on Twitter with the handle @critclubcast.
