This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking valuable insights into leadership, coaching, and personal development. Tune in and elevate your understanding of what it takes to be a substantive leader in today's dynamic professional landscape.Episode Quotes:Straight line vs. Latticework pathSo I think we all think that our careers are going to just go up the mountain like this, right? In this straight trajectory. But it's really not the case. It's a little bit of serendipity. And I ask a lot of people that I coach, “Well, how did you get from here to there?” And people say to me, “Oh, it's just a conversation I had, I wanted to learn something new. I was talking to a friend of mine, somebody reached out to me on LinkedIn and I wanted to kind of take this new role.”So it kind of is a bit circular, right? In terms of how we kind of bob and weave and a lot of consultants talk about it from a lattice perspective. So I think if we really get to the underpinnings of it, it's really about patience and learning. It's not just this kind of straight rocket ship up, but how do we allow for the patience and the learning. And that's how you become much more of a substantive leader.Embracing coaching authenticityIt's really just owning who you are as a coach. What does that mean? When I went through coaching school, you had to learn how to ask a question. You went through this very linear process. My brain doesn't work that way. My brain goes to the shiny object. And sometimes it might come across as, you know, kind of swirly. And so I'd always try to live in this linear process of asking a question. But I finally decided, you know what? I'm just gonna own how my brain works. So I think part of it is just as a coach, really just owning your style. And it doesn't matter how everybody else “does” it, just own it.A coach's perspective on active listening and watchingThere are three things that I really look for when I'm listening. And the first one is I try really hard not to formulate my next question or a thought in my head. I try really hard to live in the moment. And I also try really hard to look at people's body language, too, just because body language never lies. But now I'm going to contradict myself because I kind of love doing that. Sometimes I like to say a frown is just a frown. You as a coach. You're looking for these signals, right? And these you could have a frown that's just like a millisecond on your client's face and you think, “Oh, I just asked the wrong question or maybe I poked too hard on this.”Show Links:Official WebsiteAnne Sugar on LinkedinAnne Sugar on Twitter

This is the final episode of the show! After 128 episodes, I have decided to practice that I preach, and make the tough call on priorities and pressures in my life, which means this show will be setting with the sun today. Whether that's forever or for now is not relevant because "forever" is not happening today. With all the demands on my time, I have been facing my own burnout – something I've had as a central theme in many episodes in this show. To protect and love myself, I've taken an inventory of all the things that I am committed to, where they are in the grand scheme of building toward my goals, whether they've served their purpose, and how I might be able to move forward without them. Though it was a hard decision I've grappled with for several months, ending the show here made a lot of sense. Do a Day is not going anywhere, however, with all the resources at your fingertips, as ever. You can still get the book in paperback, Kindle, Audible, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook and more. You can still do the Do a Day Masterclass, or sign up for 1-on-1 coaching with me. And the entire back catalog of episodes of the show will still be available for you to go back, listen to, and grow from. With all the stories and inspiration in the 127 episodes that I've released before this final one, I know there is at least one spark that every person in the world could use to start the flame that lets you Go Out and Do It! Respect for all my past guests: Season 1 I kicked the show off sharing the story of Do a Day. Charlie Gilkey shares about how being smart makes you strong. Today, I am the interviewee. Executive Coach Anne Sugar graciously offered to interview me on Work From The Inside Out. You may recall that Anne was my guest a few episodes ago and at that time we decided it would be fun for her to turn the tables on me. As with many adventures, I stepped into the unknown, trusting Anne to take the ball and run with it. I hope you will listen and enjoy it! In this episode I share my experience of being a podcaster and soon-to-be author: "Here's an AHA. In my earlier career, I was deeply unhappy in some of my past jobs, and I found my way to something that I love to do, coaching. I assumed I was going to interview people who had experienced similar misery and found their way to happiness as I did. Not necessarily true. While there are other people out there like me, those are generally not the people who have become my podcast guests." "I'm always appreciative when my guests are willing to go a little deeper and share how the impact of a significant life event spurred them towards some meaningful action." My book (untitled) is about the stories and themes of my podcast guests who have navigated a variety of career and professional transitions. The purpose of the book is to inspire the reader to engage in their own transition, if they so choose, by reflecting on the stories and assimilating the lessons learned through the themes threaded throughout the book. In this episode, Leafy talks to executive coach and speaker Anne Sugar, who gives us practical and actionable tips on understanding our audience and branding ourselves. Anne has coached and lectured at both Harvard Business School and MIT and advised top leaders at TripAdvisor and Havas, to name a few. Anne tells us that we have to ‘flex to our audience’ so that they understand what we are trying to sell. Remember to keep it simple and use who you are and what is important from a values perspective. You have to be authentic. People are influenced by stories, so defining and practicing your story is important. Know your audience, do they like data? Do they like storytelling? Once you know what interests your audience, structure your story so that it will peak their interest. Anne also tells us to be authentic; being completely flawless can come off as unauthentic, over-practiced and sometimes robotic. That is when you are not in the movement in the meeting and can completely lose your audience. For more tips from Anne Sugar, visit http://annesugar.com/ and https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-sugar-064564/.Interested in Investing and want to set yourself up for success? Positioning your company for hyper-growth requires “leveling up” people as well as processes and tools. Many leaders (and investors) interpret leveling up as replacing existing personnel with more qualified people. But the onus is on these leaders to create a culture of continuous education rather than blaming people when things go wrong. In this episode, Anne Sugar, an executive coach for Harvard Business School’s Executive Program, provides an in-depth case study of a hiring process she coached an H.R. executive through as she set out to answer four key questions in preparation for expansion.
Host Jim Karrh welcomes Anne Sugar, an executive coach, speaker, and frequent contributor to Inc. magazine and Harvard Business Review. Anne offers her insights into the communication and message-leadership skills that are necessary in today's business environment.

Learning - a lot of the really successful people that I coach read a lot of fiction, biographies to things about their industry, their verticals. Next - hard work, you have to work hard. The last thing is that people look at their careers from a serendipity perspective and that you don't need to have a five year plan.
