Farm machinery seldom wears out. If you keep your machinery up, you can use it summer in and summer out until it becomes obsolete. The idle machine sitting in dampness will go to pieces in one season, but that same machine used for 10 years will only make it shine. One year of sitting around sulking will do more to rust your soul than 100 years of hard work, if God granted you that many years” - A.W. Tozer We can easily apply the above quotes to our own writing. There's certainly a time to rest but we must be careful not to rust. Writing is a skill that must be practiced and refined over time. Staying consistent with a writing habit will help “keep our machinery up” so we can use it year after year. As little as 15 minutes a day can go a long way to preventing us from rusting out as Kingdom writers. Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NLT) says, “Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.” Are we waiting for perfect conditions in our writing? If so, we may be in for a long wait which could allow our writing to become rusty. God is calling us to plant our words into the lives of others for His glory.  Let's keep our pens active and the ink flowing, all for the purpose of fulfilling God's call on our lives. In this episode of Doing Diversity in Writing, we—Bethany and Mariëlle—talk about writing better female characters. This is the first part of a two-part episode on the topic.   Here's what we talked about: That, in the US, women are estimated to buy 70–80% of fiction books There are way more male than female leads in children's books That novels, on average and across the board, only have one female character to four male characters But that many readers FEEL like there are way more female protagonists these days than there are male protagonists  That women writers also have a tendency to write male characters, and that women are not exempt from perpetuating problematic female representations What kind of roles women tend to have in fiction A selection of tropes to avoid or seriously consider when writing female characters Some of the most persistent narrative structures that disempower and/or harm women Why it is important to write female characters better, even if books with badly written women are selling well  And here are the (re)sources we mentioned on the show:   “How many books per year do Americans read?” by Jamie Ballard: https://today.yougov.com/topics/lifestyle/articles-reports/2018/08/14/reading-books-men-women “Gender in twentieth-century children's books” by Janice McCabe: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/241647875_Gender_in_Twentieth-Century_Children%27s_Books “It's a Man's (Celluloid) World, Even in a Pandemic Year: Portrayals of Female Characters in the Top U.S. Films of 2021” by Dr. Martha M. Until then, we're continuing our tour of past guests in an effort to elevate a few of our favorite conversations to welcome new listeners the best way we know how. This week we bring you Ed Young and Liz Neely in our 2018 conversation live on the Mission Forward stage.Ed and Liz are two of the smartest and sharpest minds in science, communications, and EDS reporting on COVID earned him a Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism in 2021. Back in 2018, Ed had just written a story in The Atlantic titled, "I Spent Two Years Trying to Fix the Gender Imbalance in My Stories Here's What I've Learned, and Why I Did It." The lessons he and Liz articulate in this conversation continue to be relevant as we continue to crest this pandemic wave. We hope you enjoy this conversation and learn as much from it as we did.Since starting the Mission Forward conversation series in 2014, we've had the opportunity to interview some amazing folks: Pulitzer Prize-winning writers, MacArthur Genius grantees, media entrepreneurs, and philanthropists. One of our favorite conversations to date has been with Ed Yong and Liz Neeley. It took place in 2018, shortly after Ed wrote a story in the Atlantic titled: “I Spent Two Years Trying to Fix the Gender Imbalance in My Stories Here's What I've Learned, and Why I Did It.”As an acclaimed author and science writer, Ed was a big deal then, but he's had quite a run these last few years. This past September, his story on the COVID-19 pandemic, “How Did it Come to This?” took the cover spot of The Atlantic magazine, and since that time, he's published several other articles on COVID 19 including his most recent:  “America Is About to Choose How Bad the Pandemic Will Get.”Given how much we value Ed Yong — and how straightforward he can make even the most complex science story — we decided to resurface this great conversation from a few years back, about building equity and breaking bias in storytelling. In that 2018 story about gender imbalance in his reporting, Ed found that only 24 percent of his last 23 articles quoted sources that were women. And of those stories, 35 percent featured no female voices at all. As Ed shared in his article:“I knew that I care about equality, so I deluded myself into thinking that I wasn't part of the problem. I assumed that my passive concern would be enough. Passive concern never is.”Yong's heartbreakingly honest revelation, and several others like it, spurred our desire to dig in on ways that writers, marketers, and communications directors can build equity and break bias in their storytelling, and his story has stuck with us for many years. But it wasn't just Ed who we spoke with back **in 2018. We were joined by his partner, the brilliant Liz Neeley, founder and principal of Liminal Creations, where she focuses her time and talent on science communication. Liz served as Executive Director of The Story Collider through August of this year, shepherding real and deeply personal stories of science and living through on-stage events and their eponymous (and extraordinarily popular) podcast.  Together, they had a lot to say on the topic of equity in storytelling.Liz Neeley and Ed Yong are extraordinary people and exceptional journalists and communicators. Kyle Stedman (@kstedman) reads the bad idea "Leave Yourself Out of Your Writing" by R. Joseph Rodríguez (@escribescribe). It's a chapter from Bad Ideas about Writing, which was edited by Cheryl E. He is the author of Enacting Adolescent Literacies across Communities: Latino/a Scribes and Their Rites (Lexington Books, 2017), Teaching Culturally Sustaining and Inclusive Young Adult Literature: Critical Perspectives and Conversations (Routledge, 2019), and several academic articles and book chapters. Mission Forward
Breaking Bias in Storytelling with Ed Yong and Liz Neeley

Since starting the Mission Forward conversation series in 2014, we’ve had the opportunity to interview some amazing folks: Pulitzer Prize-winning writers, MacArthur Genius grantees, media entrepreneurs, and philanthropists. One of our favorite conversations to date has been with Ed Yong and Liz Neeley. It took place in 2018, shortly after Ed wrote a story in the Atlantic titled: “I Spent Two Years Trying to Fix the Gender Imbalance in My Stories Here’s What I’ve Learned, and Why I Did It.”As an acclaimed author and science writer, Ed was a big deal then, but he’s had quite a run these last few years. This past September, his story on the COVID-19 pandemic, “How Did it Come to This?” took the cover spot of The Atlantic magazine, and since that time, he’s published several other articles on COVID 19 including his most recent: “America Is About to Choose How Bad the Pandemic Will Get.” Given how much we value Ed Yong — and how straightforward he can make even the most complex science story — we decided to resurface this great conversation from a few years back, about building equity and breaking bias in storytelling. In that 2018 story about gender imbalance in his reporting, Ed found that only 24 percent of his last 23 articles quoted sources that were women. And of those stories, 35 percent featured no female voices at all. As Ed shared in his article:“I knew that I care about equality, so I deluded myself into thinking that I wasn’t part of the problem. I assumed that my passive concern would be enough. Passive concern never is.”Yong’s heartbreakingly honest revelation, and several others like it, spurred our desire to dig in on ways that writers, marketers, and communications directors can build equity and break bias in their storytelling, and his story has stuck with us for many years. But it wasn’t just Ed who we spoke with in 2018. We love this conversation and we’re sure that you will, too. Links & NotesBuilding Equity and Breaking Bias in Storytelling — by Carrie FoxWhat Bias is Hiding in Your Writing? — by Carrie Fox

[Ep 213] If you didn't click to read this first sentence, I failed. If we want to hook readers and hold their attention so they read all the way to the end, we have to generate an intriguing title or headline. Lure Readers with Your Title Books, chapters, articles, essays, poems: they all need names or titles that invite the reader to stop skimming and scrolling and think, “Hm. I wonder what this is about?” or “Oh, wow, I need this information.” I opened up Feedly when I was preparing this article and stopped on an article at The Write Practice titled “How to Find the Core Message of Your Writing” because it was clear and seemed relevant to the kinds of things I like to read. But I also stopped on an article by Emily P. Freeman: “How to Find (and Become) A Good Listener.” That sounded useful to help me as a coach and to help me improve relationships with family and friends. Or consider James Clear's book Atomic Habits. The main title intrigues me with that word “atomic” connected to “habits.” His subtitle is “An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones.” Then he includes a tagline that clarifies it further: “Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results.” That sounds like a doable approach to the topic of habits, doesn't it? He hooked me with his title and subtitle combo. We have to entice our readers to click on the link or open the book by capturing that first concept in a few words that hint at or outright reveal the subject, topic, theme, or problem we'll address in the piece. Hook Your Readers with Attention Grabbers Let's say you nailed it—you lured in your readers with the headline. Now it's time to hook them—to grab them by the throat, as novelists often say. Bring on the attention grabber: it's that first line or two that will keep them reading. When I taught composition to high school students, I'd offer attention-grabber ideas like: a startling statistic a quote a question an intriguing statement or claim a story (e.g., an anecdote that stands alone, a personal story, or someone else's story) That article about finding the core message of your writing starts, “Why do you write?”—a question any writer will instinctively answer, at least in his head. So the author, Joe Bunting, has probably hooked us. Our mind is engaged with the question. It's a good attention-grabber. Emily P. Freeman's article on finding and becoming a good listener has an epigraph—a quote from Dr. Larry Crabb about listening to each other—followed by the beginning of the actual article. She starts with a story: It's 2012, and there's a stack of brochures in the little room I type in. I keep staring over at them, rereading their invitation, “To know more about you: If you would like to be informed of upcoming events…” I reach over, and I turn the plastic holder to face the wall. I cannot keep reading that same brochure over and over again. What's going to happen? Why is this brochure featured so prominently in this story? Is she going to take action? Is it going to change her? What does this brochure have to do with listening? You can see how stories are great for hooking readers—they're great attention-grabbers. They awaken curiosity and open a loop that we must close. We want to know what happens and how it ends. So Emily has hooked me. You, too, can use stories. And here's a bonus tip—if you start far enough into a situation, the action of a story engages and hooks the reader, but you can leave it hanging so that you complete the story in the conclusion. That provides closure that satisfies and gratifies the reader. It feels like you've come full circle. But for them to get to the end, you've got to hold him. First you hook them, then you hold them. Hold Your Reader's Attention To hold the reader isn't easy. We're battling for his or her attention, and we all know the long list of distractions that can pull a reader away at any moment. Here are some tips.
