Under the guise of funding OneSchool Global, the PBCC's leaders have quietly bilked $0.65 billion from their unsuspecting members since 2017. Rather than being used for education, this tax free bullion is stashed in multiple obscure private investment funds around the globe, and used by the tiny elite of ultra-rich PBCC church leaders to fund their own businesses ventures. Every year, the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church's “Global Funding Team” holds a “Strive” fundraiser to collect a further $250 million to add to the pot. Attendance at this Zoom fundraising event, while dressed in church attire, is compulsory for 100% of members, and they must keep their cameras on so that local brethren priests can see that they are attending, and monitor their reactions. The 54,000 assembled victims of this fraud are told a carefully crafted pack of outright lies to the effect that the Brethren's OneSchool Global desperately needs funds, that Vision Foundation is an endowment fund for this purpose, and that it generates an astonishing 20% return on investment. Get-a-Life exposes for he first time the shocking truth that Vision Foundation has actually been losing millions of dollars per year, and far from being an endowment fund, is just a handy source of ready cash for the corrupt Brethren elite. We also expose for the first time the “Campus Modernization Program” and the “Hall Standardization Program” further financial scams perpetrated by PBCC leadership to launder $100s of millions of tax-free dollars into their own bank accounts. Join us as we light up for the first time the Affinity Fraud of the Century, as the perpetrators desperately scramble to pull the maximum value from the scam before the Australian Tax Office's ongoing investigation closes it down for good. Small Biz Matters: People, Policy, Purpose ~ Episode #237 Broadcast date: 18th June 2024 Host: Alexi Boyd, Small Business Advocate & Policy Advisor Guest: Will Day, Deputy Commissioner Small Business at Australian Taxation Office We are pleased to be joined on Small Biz Matters by those in government who are really at the coalface of supporting small business. Today we welcome Will Day, Assistant Commissioner in charge of small business at the Australian Tax Office. So why did we ask the ATO on the program you may ask? Well, as difficult as it may be, whilst small businesses struggle to keep their doors open in the current economic climate, it's also important that they continue to work on meeting their obligations. We all know that tax and compliance is difficult and unnecessary burden on small business but it is also critical ensuring that small businesses a vital role in the economy. But whilst we all struggle with compliance and making sure everything is in order there is a group of businesses who do the wrong thing; making it unfair and inequitable for the rest of us. The ATO takes a considered and careful approach when dealing with small businesses, doing their best to really understanding what they're going through. Critical to this is their relationship with the advisor community and associations who speak openly and frankly about what their small businesses; and how the policy burden can be better administered by the ATO to make the process as simple as possible. So let's have a listen to what Will Day has to say about the way they support, work with advisors, the latest digital developments on the ATO website and what they're doing to stamp out software that gives some small businesses and unfair advantage. PEOPLE - How does the tax office engage with the small business industry groups and associations to understand the needs of small businesses and the best way to support their members to meet their tax obligations? How important is it to engage with advisors, and is that a different conversation?  POLICY - What are your current priorities which the ATO developing with these groups to refine and make fit for purpose for small business? "The new Commissioner mentioned at the COSBOA summit the amount of collectable debt is now at over $50 billion. 65% of all collectable debt owed relates to small business and 74% of that relates to activity statements. What's your message to small businesses listening today who have a debt with the ATO and are not sure what they should do?" PURPOSE - How does the ATO work with other government departments and regulators to streamline processes and make it easier and lessen the reporting burden on small businesses? Do any of your business clients owe money to the Australian Tax Office? There is more than $50B of collectable tax debt to collect. 65% relates to small business so the answer is likely YES. There's a major change coming on interest deductibility which CA ANZ members need to know about. From July 1, 2025, the general interest charge and the shortfall interest charge will become non-deductible, increasing the cost of tax debt. It means businesses will have a strong incentive to obtain finance from banks instead of sitting on tax debt and they'll be looking to accountants for help. This week, in a stunning sequel to Steve Simmons revelation of multi-million dollar tax fraud and money-laundering in New Zealand, over 120 Australian Tax Office (ATO) investigators conducted an unannounced “SWAT” type raid on the Exclusive Brethren's prestigious HQ in Sydney, and a dozen other brethren businesses and homes. The primary targets were the Universal Business Team (UBT) – the church's finance wing, OneSchool Global, who educates the cult's 9500 children, and Rapid Relief Team, (RRT) their PR operation. Rick Grosse, CFO of OneSchool global was interrogated and his phone was seized. Ron Arkcoll, MD of RRT, had both his home and business raided, and files, computers and phones were secured under police guard and removed from UBT HQ for further analysis. Damian Hastie, creator of the openandcandid.com investigative platform, sits down with the Get-a-Life team to give us an overview of the staggering wealth of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, and its labyrinth of interconnected businesses, trusts and charities through which billions of dollars are disseminated, ultimately enriching a tiny elite at the top of what Damien likens to a Ponzi Scheme. I'm taking a little breather over the new year, still in the background prepping some fun new episodes for you. So this week I'm bringing you not only a fan fave from a little earlier this year, but one of my own favorites. That's a write off. Isn't it? This one I step you through some of the nitty-gritty of business tax deductions, with a fun spin from our favourite Schitt's Creek character, David Rose. If you need some help demystifying business expenses and tax deductions (particularly in the Australian context), then you're in the right place. So, what exactly is this thing called a write-off? Well, friends, it's merely another name for a business expense or a tax deduction. Simply put, it's anything you purchase to cut down your profit or taxable income, giving you lower taxes. You could see it as a secret goodie bag for your business - but remember, it comes with some strings attached! The Australian Tax Office isn't playing around when it comes to write-offs. They've got three golden rules which I explain today:1. The purchase must be for your business, not personal use.2. If the purchase is for both business and personal use, you can only claim the business portion. 3. You need records as proof, and no, bank statements don't make the cut. You need tax invoices!Knowing the what and the how of deductions and business expenses is great, but it's pointless if you don't keep your tax invoices. Keeping those ATO-required records is your secret weapon. Without them, you could be shelling out more tax than you need to. Tax deduction eligibility will always depend on your unique business but to help you along, I'm sharing some common write-off categories that may be relevant to your situation. And while I know it's tempting to turn to Facebook groups or your best friend's aunt for advice, it's always best to get advice from a qualified professional to avoid any tax troubles. Enjoy this episode and I'll be back with you shortly with fresh content to get you on top of your bookkeeping matters.LINKSPrevious Episodes Mentioned:Do your (Tax) Invoices say the right thingsWhat happens when you don't keep accurate recordsConnect with Lisa Turner: Instagram:     @accountedforyouWebsite:         https://accountedforyou.com.au/

We hear a lot today about building our personal brand on social media, about the need to be open and transparent online … not to mention that well-worn word — authentic!  How do we stand out on social media - especially LinkedIn, which as we all know, is a ‘professional' network, where showing up as your real self can be difficult for many people. Yet, we also know that dropping the veneer, getting out amongst it, taking people behind the scenes of your business or professional life - showing your personality and bringing your whole self to LinkedIn especially: this can work wonders in terms of building a profile and getting people to take notice of who you are, what you do and what you stand for: all hallmarks of professional personal branding.  In this episode, we hear from Joyce Ong who, from pretty much scratch, has gone from zero-to-hero in terms of her LinkedIn presence. It's a great story! Joyce is co-founder of TAX NUGGETS ACADEMY, which produces bite-sized training videos for SME accountants and tax advisors. She describes herself as an entrepreneur, content creator, disruptor, rebel against boring, and saviour from sucky training!  In this fun and informative conversation, Joyce explains how she lets it all out on LinkedIn - detailing the ups and downs of life as a startup entrepreneur - and how adhering to her policy of radical transparency on the platform has helped her not only stand out from the pack, but also grow her nascent enterprise. Joyce walks us through her story, from working as a consultant at the Australian Tax Office, to running her own training business. Along the way, she prioritised showing up as herself on LinkedIn, a process she found liberating, and unpacks the thinking behind her efforts on the social platform. During the course of the conversation, Joyce touches on: The importance of authenticity on LinkedIn, and why taking people behind the scenes of your professional life can really pay dividends in terms of attracting attention, building an audience and generating businessThe concept of radical transparency, and what it looks like in actionHow much time she spends creating content and responding to commentsDealing with negative comments on LinkedInEarned media opportunities that come from having a growing profileHow she juggles personal brand vs business brand The success she's having with her early efforts with LinkedIn paid ads Joyce also squeezes in a shout-out for a role she's got going at Tax Nuggets Academy (digital marketing manager), and asks - and gets - some in-the-moment advice around podcasting!
