For this episode of Acton Line, we're bringing you a panel discussion from the Grand Rapids edition of the Free Market Road Show, an event the Acton Institue recently co-hosted along with the Austrian Economics Center. In this conversation, entitled “Unleashing the Entrepreneur,” the panelists explore the theme of entrepreneurship and how it can be a key driver of economic growth and prosperity, as well as examine the challenges that entrepreneurs face, such as regulatory barriers and access to capital, and how these challenges can be overcome to unleash the full potential of a market economy. The panelists discuss how entrepreneurs can play a crucial role in addressing societal issues and creating positive change through innovation and entrepreneurship, and on the importance of empowering individuals to take control of their own economic destinies and how this can lead to greater prosperity for all. This panel features John Chisholm, has three decades of experience as an entrepreneur, CEO, and investor. A pioneer in online marketing research, he founded and served as CEO/Chairman of Decisive Technology (now part of Google), publisher of the first desktop and client-server software for online surveys, and Dylan Pahman, a research fellow here at Acton, where he also serves as executive editor of the Journal of Markets & Morality. For this episode of Acton Line we're bringing a panel discussion from the Free Market Road Show - Grand Rapids, a recent special event we hosted here at the Acton Institute in conjunction with the Austrian Economics Center. There is no need to describe the many problems and crises of our time. But there is a great need to look at the causes and to refute the simplified and politically opportune explanations. Only if we know exactly what the problems are and how they arose will we be able to find the right solution. New standards have come into force in almost all areas of policy and they are changing our lives, sometimes noticeably, sometimes surreptitiously, but often permanently. This discussion centers on the problem of Unrestrained Government Spending and Economic Prosperity. The conversation features Dr. Barbara Kolm, Vice President of the Austrian Central Bank, and the Director of the Austrian Economics Center, Dr. Daniel Mitchell, a public policy economist based in Washington, DC, and is moderated by Dr. David Hebert, assistant professor of economics and director of the Center for Markets, Ethics, and Entrepreneurship at Aquinas College and an affiliate scholar at the Acton Institute.Subscribe to our podcastsApply Now for Acton University Hosted on Acast. https://youtu.be/6-5-bOGeYUc Locke may have been and indeed was an ardent Protestant, but he was also a Protestant scholastic, heavily influenced by the founder of Protestant scholasticism, the Dutchman Hugo Grotius, who in turn was heavily influenced by the late Spanish Catholic scholastics. ... While Locke developed libertarian natural rights thought more fully than his predecessors, it was still squarely embedded in the scholastic natural law tradition. Murray N. https://youtu.be/LALiVLMtN2o ... while Ludwig von Mises was acknowledged as one of Europe's most eminent economists in the 1920s and 30s, the language barrier shut off any recognition of Mises in the Anglo-American world until the mid-1930s; then, just as his business cycle theory was beginning to achieve renown as an explanation for the Great Depression, Mises's overdue recognition was lost in the hoopla of the Keynesian Revolution. A refugee deprived of his academic or social base in Europe, Mises emigrated to the United States at the mercy of his new-found environment. But while, in the climate of the day, the leftist and socialist refugees from Europe were cultivated, feted, and given prestigious academic posts, a different fate was meted out to a man who embodied a methodological and political individualism that was anathema to American academia. Indeed, the fact that a man of Mises's eminence was not offered a single regular academic post and that he was never able to teach in a prestigious graduate department in this country is one of the most shameful blots on the none too illustrious history of American higher education. The fact that Mises himself was able to preserve his great energy, his remarkable productivity, and his unfailing gentleness and good humor in the face of this shabby treatment is simply one more tribute to the qualities of this remarkable man ... ... Ludwig von Mises's writings are the embodiment of a courageous and eminent man hewing to his discipline and to his vision, unheeding of shabby maltreatment. Murray N. Scott talks with Weimin Chen about his recent article on the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline. The pipeline will transport natural gas from Russia to Germany. Chen explains that these two countries have a long history of conflict, so we should see increased economic engagement as a triumph. But of course, that's not how many in the U.S. government see it. Chen explains that those involved with the project have had to deal with U.S. sanctions since the Obama Administration. Washington has opposed the project both in the name of protecting American gas companies from competition and as a way to avoid giving Russia leverage over Europe. However, the Biden Administration has stopped the sanctions, signaling a change in the American position. Some Europeans themselves oppose the pipeline on environmental grounds. And others are upset they'll make less collecting fees on gas traveling through their borders. But both Scott and Chen agree that all sides need to consider the risk of thermonuclear war when advocating against economic engagement. Discussed on the show: “Nord Stream 2: The Value of German-Russian Cooperation” (Austrian Economics Center) Weimin Chen is a research assistant at the Austrian Economics Center and is a manager and project/events coordinator at the International Student Center's Arts for Peace Initiative in New York City. https://youtu.be/fLH8dfwX1qc ... we possess, in the heritage of the U.S. Constitution, a powerful instrument to take up the cudgels of the grand old cause of denationalization and the devolution of the federal government into the states and localities. Libertarians have always, and correctly, been strong on the great libertarian Ninth Amendment to the Constitution. But it is time to realize that we must also take up the old paleoconservative cause of the Tenth Amendment, the decentralization aspect of the Bill of Rights. Murray N. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, governments across the world have kept printing currency like there’s no tomorrow. Helicopter money, once a radical idea, is the new normal. Economist Federico Fernández has seen the future of such policies in his own country, Argentina. A senior fellow with the Vienna-based Austrian Economics Center and president of the Bases International Foundation, he believes the central-banking house of cards is crumbling. This week, we interview Peter Hemstead, CFO of Bluestone Resources (TSX-V: BSR), who explains how the firm keeps raising funds for its ongoing gold exploration project in Guatemala.

We recorded this episode before a live audience at -- of all places -- the Austrian central bank in Vienna, where the Austrian Economics Center held a two-day academic conference. We respond to Krugman's key claim: namely, that Eurosclerosis is long over, and that Europe can no longer be cited with any plausibility as evidence that significant social spending and regulation retard employment. The speech conferring the award on me was delivered by Ingo Friedrich, retired vice president of the European Parliament and president of the European Economic Senate. This episode consists of selections from that speech as well as my brief remarks.

Boy oh boy are you guys in for a special episode today, as today I am joined once again by, "easily one of the best of the best", Matt Kibbe! Matt returns to The Brian Nichols Show to discuss his newest venture over at BlazeTV- Kibbe on Liberty, where "Libertarian Matt Kibbe puts aside politics to have mostly honest conversations with mostly interesting people." Listen as Matt and I start off by discussing the importance of liberty organizations that engage young people, like that of what Cliff Maloney is doing with Young Americans for Liberty (YAL). Later, we dig into his new show, Kibbe on Liberty, have a fun-filled chat about Hayek, and then dig into Trump, the Mueller Report, and Bob Barr. Finally, we conclude by discussing Matt's 2020 "wish list" of presidential and touch on the topic of one Congressman Justin Amash's possible future endeavors... Matt's Bio: Matt Kibbe is the President and Chief Community Organizer at Free the People, an educational organization turning the next generation on to the values of liberty. We reach the “liberty curious” through social media, video, and storytelling. Kibbe is also an Executive Producer at CRTV, where he produces “The Deadly Isms,” a documentary series about the dangers of all flavors of authoritarianism. He is the Co-Founder and Partner at Fight the Power Productions, a strategic communications firm focused on video production, social media branding, and compelling storytelling. He is also a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Austrian Economics Center in Vienna. In 2004 Kibbe founded FreedomWorks, where he served as President for 11 years. Steve Forbes said, “Kibbe has been to FreedomWorks what Steve Jobs was to Apple.” Against his better judgment, Kibbe occasionally gets involved in politics, serving as Senior Advisor to a Rand Paul SuperPAC, and creating AlternativePAC to support liberty candidates. Back when Yoda was a teenager, Kibbe worked as Chief of Staff on Capitol Hill, as Budget Director for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and at the Republican National Committee. Dubbed “The Scribe” by the New York Daily News, Kibbe is most recently author of the #2 New York Times bestseller, Don't Hurt People and Don't Take Their Stuff: A Libertarian Manifesto. In his spare time he appears on Old Media, including FOX News, MSNBC, CNN and HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. Most of his best material is lifted from his three liberty-minded cats, Roark, Ragnar, and Rearden. Next, we discuss Matt's organization, "Free the People", which is an educational organization turning the next generation on to the values of liberty by reaching those “liberty curious” through social media, video, and storytelling. After that, we discuss how libertarians should vote in the 2018 midterms, strategic voting, and the "lesser of two evils" argument. We also touch on two strong Libertarian campaigns in Gary Johnson for U.S. Senate in New Mexico and Larry Sharpe for Governor in New York. We start to conclude our conversation by discussing potential outcomes in the 2018 midterms, as well as how our nation will look after 2020 and 2024.
