Join us in this conversation as we try to understand the origins and ideology of the Swatantra party, which was an attempt at offering effective opposition to Congress's one party dominance in post-independence India. The party, founded by C. Rajagopalachari who famously formulated the term ‘Licence Permit Raj', was influenced by libertarian thought and rallied behind the promise of a free economy in contrast to the planned economy of the erstwhile Congress government. But history is seldom that straightforward. This story and its characters also have many shades. Listen patiently as our guest Aditya Balasubramanian narrates a comprehensive picture of the Swatantra party and its politics. We discuss:* Understanding the roots of liberalisation* Emerging ideologies after independence* Free Economy vs Free Markets* Policy changes after independence* How did they gather electoral strength* Rallying around private property rights* C. Rajagopalachari's involvement in Swatantra* Difference between theory and practice* The decline of Swatantra* The use of print public sphereReadings:Toward a Free Economy by Aditya BalasubramanianListen to related Puliyabaazi:भारत में बैंकिंग : हुंडी से सरकारीकरण तक. In Toward a Free Economy: Swantantra and Opposition Politics in Democratic India (Princeton University Press, 2023), Aditya Balasubramanian charts the birth and rise of a political ideology rooted in the tenets of ‘free market' economics, and the loosely associated ideas of neoliberalism, conservatism, and libertarianism. Balasubramanian offers an altogether fresh origin story for this movement that is often framed as a Cold War North Atlantic export to the rest of the poorer, developing world championed by the International Monetary Fund backed Washington consensus. In his compellingly told and richly layered account, we are not only given one of the few comprehensive histories of the Swantantra (“Freedom”) Party and its tryst with democratic electoral politics in newly independent India, but we are also shown how the most important facets of this moment in history cannot simply rely on a narrative woven around party politics. This results in a focus on what Balasubramanian calls “economic consciousness,” and exposes us to a vast, multifarious archival base that spans print, visual, and urban cultures, economists' papers, government films, and much more that palpably reconstructs how economic ideals floated in the political arena also circulated in and were propped up by the wider public sphere in southern and western India. The Swantantra Party emerged in the late 1950s, as a response to the Indian National Congress Party's (INC) purported hegemony in independent India's constitutional democratic structure. The party encouraged Indians to break with the INC, which spearheaded the anticolonial nationalist movement and now dominated Indian democracy. Rejecting heavy-industrial developmental state and the accompanying rhetoric of socialism that was seen as emblematic of INC, Swatantra promised “free economy” through its project of opposition politics. As the “free economy” idea was disseminated across various genres and cultures, it took on meanings that varied by region and language, caste, and class, and won diverse advocates. These articulations, informed by but distinct from neoliberalism, came chiefly from relatively wealthy communities who felt threatened by the INC's economic policies as they embraced new forms of entrepreneurial activity. At their core, they connoted anticommunism, unfettered private economic activity, decentralized development, and the defense of private property. Opposition politics encompassed ideas and practice. Swatantra's leaders imagined a conservative alternative to a progressive dominant party in a two-party system. They communicated ideas and mobilized people around such issues as inflation, taxation, and property. And they made creative use of India's institutions to bring checks and balances to the political system. Democracy's persistence in India is uncommon among postcolonial societies. By excavating a perspective of how Indians made and understood their own democracy and economy, Aditya Balasubramanian broadens our picture of the free market, neoliberalism, democracy, and the postcolonial world. In the process, he helps us understand why geographically specific and culturally rooted histories from the Global South are necessary in qualifying and nuancing these ostensibly universal concepts. Today's Flashback Friday is from episode 416 published last September 22 2014. Charles Goyette is the Host of "Ron Paul's America" radio show. He joins the podcast to give his dramatic solution to prevent the coming financial ruin. He believes the longstanding practice of crony capitalism strangles our economy. He thinks we need to reign in overseas spending and end American interventionism. He then explains whether it is fair for younger people to subsidize older people. New York Times bestselling author Charles Goyette spent many years as an award-winning and popular Phoenix radio personality. Admired for his "Fearless Talk Radio," Charles was named Best Phoenix Talk Show Host by the New Times. Because of his insistence on holding all poiticians - regardless of party - accountable to the same strict standards, Charles was widely known as “America's Most Independent Talk Show Host.” His years of experience as a financial professional have served his listeners well as he sounded the alarm about the mortgage bubble well in advance of the calamity and described the consequences of the governments reckless economic behavior in his clear, easy to understand manner.  Charles is no newcomer to the national economic debate. In fact, more than 25 years ago Charles arranged for a then little-known Texas Congressman named Ron Paul to be the keynote speaker at a series of monetary conferences he hosted. Goyette has often been called on to share his views with television audiences nationally on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, PBS, CNBC and Fox Business Channel, including on the Glenn Beck Show and The O'Reilly Factor with Bill O'Reilly on Fox News; NOW with Bill Moyers on PBS; and on Lou Dobbs Tonight on CNN, where he repeatedly warned before the current turmoil the "economic calamity the Republicans and Democrats" were creating. He has written for a number of magazines including The American Conservative and Gannett magazines, and for LewRockwell.com, CNBC.com, WorldNetDaily.com, and TheStreet.com.  Listen to "Ron Paul's America" at  www.ronpaulsamerica.info   Follow Jason on TWITTER, INSTAGRAM & LINKEDIN Twitter.com/JasonHartmanROI Instagram.com/jasonhartman1/ Linkedin.com/in/jasonhartmaninvestor/ Call our Investment Counselors at: 1-800-HARTMAN (US) or visit: https://www.jasonhartman.com/ Free Class:  Easily get up to $250,000 in funding for real estate, business or anything else: http://JasonHartman.com/Fund CYA Protect Your Assets, Save Taxes & Estate Planning: http://JasonHartman.com/Protect Get wholesale real estate deals for investment or build a great business – Free Course: https://www.jasonhartman.com/deals Special Offer from Ron LeGrand: https://JasonHartman.com/Ron Free Mini-Book on Pandemic Investing: https://www.PandemicInvesting.com

Libraries are filled with books on the parables of Christ, and rightly so. In the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, “While civilizations have come and gone, these stories continue to teach us anew with their freshness and their humanity.” Two millennia later, the New Testament parables remain ubiquitous, and yet few have stopped to glean wisdom from one of Christ's most prevalent analogies: the use of money. In The Economics of the Parables, Rev. Robert Sirico pulls back the veil of modernity to reveal the timeless economic wisdom of the parables. Thirteen central stories—including “The Laborers in the Vineyard,” “The Rich Fool,” “The Five Talents,” and “The Faithful Steward”—serve as his guide, revealing practical lessons in caring for the poor, stewarding wealth, distributing inheritances, navigating income disparities, and resolving family tensions. Rev. Robert A. Sirico is the president emeritus and co-founder of the Acton Institute, and pastor emeritus of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Job Free Economy is a lifestyle that provides a much higher level of financial and personal freedom that is not obtainable in the traditional employment world. It allows a person to be compensated for the value they bring to the world instead of the number of hours they work.It allows a person to use all four types of leverage to generate multiple sources of income without working more hours.

Tom welcomes a new guest Charles Goyette to the show. Charles is an author and well known radio personality. Charles outlines what may make this the last gold rush. There is something different about this bull market, and that is what he has written about in his latest book. Bull markets are generally driven by money printing, but today this is unprecedented and global. He discusses much of the history of gold ownership in the United States and why today's dollar is fragile. The U.S. Government has massively overspent that much of the world is pushing back. The U.S. grows weaker because the might of the U.S. comes from it's economic strength, which is in decline. He explains the Federal Reserve System's beginnings and why it's name was an ingenious marketing ploy. They didn't dare call it a central bank, but it instead encouraged the notion of central reserves to provide stability and liquidity. Last March, the Fed announced that the reserve requirements of banks were being abolished. The rapid move toward a global digital currency standard is being driven by the need to eliminate cash. Since governments and central banks know they are moving into a period of negative interest rates, they want to charge the consumer while also monitoring and controlling their spending habits. Charles discusses some of the more crazy aspects of Modern Monetary Theory and their belief they can print money without consequence. Before Covid, introducing MMT would have been very difficult, but now, this is no longer an issue with massive fiscal spending. The government is always trying to inflate, and their motivations are many. The market senses these bubbles and tries to deflate them to some norm. Thus the popping of the bubbles is deflation, and the pumping up is inflation. The impact of all the business closings this year and job losses have yet to be fully felt as they rebound throughout the economy. Rev. Robert Sirico will recount his own moral, intellectual and spiritual development. Animated by a strong sense of social justice, he began a well-intentioned but ill-conceived career in leftist activism. A serious grappling with the classics of economics lead him to reevaluate his ultimate commitments. In meditating on the nature of the human person, choice and action in society, he began to return to the Catholicism of his youth to discover the moral foundation of a flourishing society.Rev. Robert Sirico challenges the popular political presumption that increased government intervention and welfare programs are the most moral approach to helping the poor. In his lecture, “The Moral Case for a Free Economy,” he argues that a dynamic free market, based on voluntary association and freedom from unnecessary regulation, is the best way not only to help the poor but to meet society’s needs as a whole. The free market best supports the God-given creative nature of the human person. For a complete list of speakers, topics, and dates of the Free Markets: The Ethical Economic Choice speaker series visit heritage.org/free-markets. About the Lecture: This examination of American governance makes a rather unique comparison of economic democracy with political democracy. It will be shown that this is the mechanism that governs and regulates much of our lives, not government, and does so in a much more efficient, responsive manner than political democracy. In the process, it draws a variety of conclusions about the consequences of liberty, the consequences for equality, and the physical impossibility of democratic socialism. About the Speaker: Professor Alan Messer served in the CIA for 32 years, first as an analyst on Soviet defense industries and economics for 17 years, in the Directorate for Science and Technology for two years, and then as an operations officer in the Clandestine Service for 13 years, specializing in the KGB and GRU. Prof. Messer has a Master's degree in international affairs from the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies and a Master's degree in economics from UCLA. In a week that included a one-day 257-point surge for the Dow, record Black Friday spending, and a legal challenge to Apple’s “monopoly” continuing its march to the Supreme Court, Buck once again brings on Extreme Value editor Dan Ferris to make sense of things. In the wake of Elon Musk’s own admission that Tesla “almost died this year,” Dan breaks down the latest numbers: as it produces 1,000 Model 3 sedans a week in Q3 and keeps bleeding cash, his position on Tesla “has never changed.”  Later on, they’re joined by this week’s guest. Mattie Duppler is the Founder and President of Forward Strategies, a strategic consulting firm. She also serves as the Senior Fellow for Fiscal Policy at the National Taxpayers Union, a nonpartisan advocacy group focused on budget and tax issues and sits on the board of the Center for a Free Economy. In layman’s terms, she breaks down what it really means for businesses not to have to shoulder immense paperwork for their deductions, and how the resulting savings – and flurry of capital investment – circle back to the American worker.

Father Sirico argues that a free economy actually promotes charity, selflessness, and kindness. And in Defending the Free Market, he shows why free-market capitalism is not only the best way to ensure individual success and national prosperity but is also the surest route to a moral and socially–just society. In Defending the Free Market, Father Sirico shows: Why we can’t have freedom without a free economyWhy the best way to help the poor is to a start a businessWhy charity works—but welfare doesn'tHow Father Sirico himself converted from being a leftist colleague of Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden to recognizing the merits of a free economy.
