Neurodivergent and Empowered! Anna Granta joins me this week to discuss ADHD, Autism/ASD, Dyslexia, and other neurodivergent conditions and the work she does to help adults uncover their strengths and thrive at work. We discuss the process of starting something new and getting okay with sucking as a beginner, connective thinking problem solving skills, and how to not pass our binary thinking on to our little ones. Anna owns Granta Coaching and works with individuals and groups using a mix of teaching and open coaching/exploration. She teaches people how their brain works best and strategies or tools that they can use in everyday situations, such as preparing for a difficult conversation. Her clients trust her and find her easy to talk to, so they are able to explore their changing identity and share their struggles as well as their successes. She reflects the best version of her clients back to them, celebrating their successes and stretching them to think critically about alternative actions/next steps. Almost 70 % of children experience at least 1 traumatic event before reaching age 16. Parallel to that, highly sensitive children and children with autism or ADHD tend to experience traumatic events more often and as more severe. BUT does that automatically mean, that they're also more likely to develop symptoms of a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? Today, we will shed some light on the question: “Is almost every neurodivergent person also traumatized?” We will therefore discuss - Why neurodivergents might be at higher risk to develop trauma wounds - And also what maybe makes neurodivergent children and adults more resistant to traumatic events? ► Links and Resources: Traumatic Events and CPTSD in Childhood: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17485609/ Trauma and ASD Review: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6901292/ Trauma and ADHD: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0006322322015219 Trauma and SPS: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0191886921006577 Syrian Children and Trauma: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30630553/ Dr. Elaine Aron's Comment: https://hsperson.com/are-highly-sensitive-people-more-prone-to-illness/ ► Subscribe On Your Favorite Platform! Britney talks about raising a child with autism, having patience, support, and more! According to Psychology Today, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that involves impairments to social and communication abilities, restricted interests or repetitive behaviors, and challenges with sensory processing. The term "spectrum" reflects the fact that symptoms vary across different individuals, ranging in type and severity. Early signs of autism include avoiding eye contact, not showing interest in other children or parents, talking less than other children, and feeling distressed by small changes to the daily routine, according to the CDC.Support the show
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Autism (ASD) may look a lot like each other. Children with either condition can have problems focusing. Although they share many of the same symptoms, the two are distinct conditions.Autism spectrum disorders are a series of related developmental disorders that can affect language skills, behavior, socializing, and the ability to learn. ADHD is a common condition that can impact how well you concentrate, stay still, or think before you act.Children with autism struggle to focus on things that they don't like, such as reading a book or doing a puzzle. And they may fixate on things that they do like, such as playing with a particular toy. Kids with ADHD often dislike and avoid things they'll have to concentrate on.Although kids with either condition may struggle to interact with other people, those with autism can have less social awareness of others around them. They often have a hard time putting words to their thoughts and feelings. And they may not be able to point to an object to give meaning to their speech. They find it hard to make eye contact.A child with ADHD, on the other hand, may talk nonstop. They're more likely to interrupt when someone else is speaking or butt in and try to monopolize a conversation. Also, consider the subject. Some kids with autism can talk for hours about a topic that they're interested in.A child with autism usually loves order and repetition but a kid with ADHD might not, even if it helps them. A child with autism might want the same type of food, for instance, or become overly attached to one toy or shirt. A child with ADHD doesn't like doing the same thing again or for long times.Ref: https://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/childhood-adhd/adhd-or-autism#breakingthebias #singleparent #singledad #happilysingledad #dadslove #dadsonduo #autism #autistic #actuallyautistic #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #autismpride #asd #pride #loveislove #autismawareness #autismacceptance #forabettertomorrow #eyecontact #autismadvocate #spectrum_inspired #specialneeds #specialneedsparenting #staystrong #singleparenting
Why do ADHD and Autism get misdiagnosed as Bipolar Disorder? What impact does bipolar medication have on someone? How do Brandon and Thomas process anger differently? Brandon Christ (@autistically_b) was diagnosed with Autism (ASD-2) and ADHD recently after a long life of being misdiagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Working in physiotherapy with a passion for baseball and fitness, Brandon seeks to open up about his experiences with late-diagnosed life and how fitness has shaped him as a person. My Links - https://linktr.ee/thomashenleyUK // Brandon's Insta - https://www.instagram.com/autistically_b/ Dbud Noise Cancelling Adjustable Ear Buds (20% OFF with code: THOUGHTYAUTI) - https://dbud.io/thoughtyautipodcast The conversation commences on the topic of neurodiversity, looking at the differences between inherent and acquired neurodiversity, as well as the fine lines between viewing some neurodivergencies as good, neutral, or inherently bad. On the topic of masking in adolescence, Thomas tended to be quiet and blended in as much as he could... whilst Brandon became hyper-verbal and highly social. Thomas dives deeper into Brandon's difficult childhood, highlighting the behavioral training he received due to stimming, meltdowns, and attention problems. Brandon reflects on life before the People's First movement and how his early adulthood influenced his life outcome. Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is best characterised as a sensitivity to expectations, not defiance, and is fairly common in autistic people. The two talk about their experiences with PDA and aggression at school, at work, and within sports. Highlighting the silly online culture around things such as the Alpha Male, Thomas postulates that the idea of the Sigma Male likely comes from the existence of confident autistic men with PDA. It can be hard being autistic in a neurotypical world; Thomas and Brandon connect on the negative experiences that shaped their prior negative mindset towards neurotypicals... and how they shifted their perspective to forgiveness in later adulthood. Sport and exercise is a big part of both Brandon and Thomas' life... it's regulating, a great social lubricant, helps develop grit, and can temper you against sensory overload in the long term. Autistic people can struggle with instinctual movements and hypermobility, but have a lot of strengths in sports too! Brandon directs a question to the host about the struggles he faces most often as an autistic person. Thomas highlights it was once alexithymia and other people which were the biggest factors, with executive functioning and transition difficulties being a close second. Being autistic often comes with unfavorable life experiences and co-occurring conditions, and for Thomas mental illness is the biggest difficulty in life. Thank you for being a part of A Conversation w/ Joshua T Berglan & Mr. Tenacity on the Live Mana Network! Find us by downloading our app on Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire, the app store, Google News, and your favorite podcast platforms. Meet Mr. Tenacity! Chad Osinga is a high school dropout turned college graduate, special operations sniper, and combat applications instructor for the military. Chad grew up in a drug house with a mother addicted to crack cocaine, who later died due to an overdose. Never knowing his father, he turned to the streets for the better portion of his early life. Chad joined the US Army, becoming a sniper and eventually teaching combat applications to every branch and the FBI, US Marshalls, DEA, and SWAT teams. While stationed in Germany, his five-year-old daughter had a massive stroke caused by a rare disease. German doctors misdiagnosed her before transporting her to Hamburg, where she would undergo surgery and initial testing. During this crazy time, Chad's pregnant wife would go into labor, complicating his family's situation. Chad and his wife would have a fourth child a year after his daughter's stroke, but life would again become harder as his two youngest sons were diagnosed with Autism (ASD). After sustaining multiple injuries, Chad was medically retired in 2015. Once he exited the Army, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder seemed to attack him as he had never experienced it. He turned to one of the drugs that destroyed his mother's life, alcohol. What started as a nighttime remedy soon became an addiction that would almost cost him his marriage and his relationship with his four kids. In 2015 Chad was taking a left turn when a car ran a red light and plowed through him, placing his body into a guard rail. Most thought he would not make it through this incident, but God again had different plans. It took him almost a year to get back on a motorcycle, but he was determined not to allow fear or this wreck to control his future. Shy of two years later, in 2020, he was riding with a group of friends when a van came into his lane. He was propelled into a construction zone as his motorcycle was pinned into a jersey barrier. Chad died on the way to the hospital and before his second surgery. Though Chad's last accident placed him in a position of hardship, it also spurred a change in him and an understanding that God had a purpose for his life that was bigger than him. He quit drinking cold turkey, quit smoking marijuana (which was an ounce-a-week addiction at one point), and began unearthing the power within himself. Chad can relate to almost any scenario from war, special needs children, marital problems, and physical setbacks. Now Chad uses his time to speak on podcasts such as "Good Life Great Life with Brian Highfield" and writes for publications like "Authority Magazine & The UpJourney" and as a life coach/mentor. His main initiative is to help empower people by revamping their mindset. He believes the fight for success, failure, mediocracy, or greatness is won or lost within our minds. Thank you for being a part of this broadcast! Be blessed, Joshua T Berglan
"A survey conducted by The National Autistic Society found that compared to males, women and girls were more likely to be misdiagnosed, with 42 percent of females diagnosed with a mental disorder other than autism when first being assessed, as opposed to 30 percent of males." I've been getting an increasing amount of emails, dm's, and comments from you guys asking for me to make more videos talking about differences with other disorders in comparison to Autism Spectrum Disorder. The desire and need for more videos breaking down these differences are completely valid and definitely much needed--for the statistics of how many women are so commonly misdiagnosed speaks for itself. In today's video I go into some of the symptoms and traits of Borderline Personality Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although Autism is often misdiagnosed with many different types of disorders, I personally found myself being misdiagnosed twice with BPD before finally being diagnosed with Autism. Although the topic of being misdiagnosed can be a sensitive subject for some people and even elicit scrutiny, I think it's important for people who are seeking answers to combine their knowledge of the different disorders and understanding of themselves to seek a diagnosis that can resonate and actually help them seek the treatment they need. Never be afraid to seek a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th opinion if a doctor cannot explain to you why they are diagnosing you with something in a way that makes sense or is accurate to who you know you are. People like to believe those with disorders somehow cannot make their own discernment that's to be trusted, this ideology is harmful and ableist. So please, educate yourself and advocate for yourself! ·Connect with me·
Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Jovita: Hey Dr. Cabral, I would like to know if you can help me with my stomach problem. I get bloated a lot and burp 24/7 to a point where I can't sleep at night. My doctor said I had a chronic constipation and bacteria in my gut and I also have heart burn. And I have been having this problem for 2 years and the medicine doesn't help. Is there anything you have that I can buy to help ? Jenna: Hey Dr. Cabral! I really appreciate this community you've built. It has helped me overcome health complications I didn't think I'd ever heal and restored my faith in the power of my own body and mind. My question is a little different. I am thinking of going back to school to get my masters in psychology because I love the field, but don't know what career I want to pursue with it. I was wondering if functional medicine companies like yours had a psychologist on staff working with the team and the clients. I would love to work with people who are determined to improve their health in all areas. I've thought maybe sports psychology would align the best with working on both the physical and mental aspects of health, but thought I'd ask if there are any opportunities for psychologists on functional medicine teams. Thanks for all your help! Gillian: Hey there Dr. Cabral! I want to thank you first for sharing all your wisdom with all of us. You have an amazing heart for people and touch more people than you will ever know. My question is about breast implants. I got silicone implants 15 years ago and after reading and learning about natural and functional medicine, I think I may have made a big health mistake. While I love the way it makes me look and feel, I do not want to sacrifice my health. I'm in my late 30's and healthy. Should I have them removed for health reasons and if so, are there any heathy alternatives? Thank you so very much! Nancy: Hello Dr Cabral, I am a 57 yr old female with history of Hashimotos Thyroiditis, sleep apnea and I had a heart attack 5 yrs ago with one stent placed. I am on Pravastatin 20mg and zedia 20mg. I have recently gained about 30lbs over covid period due to lack of exercise. I am vegan and gluten free. My cholesterol has crept back up to 190 and my glucose is at pre-diabetic level (over one point) I have gained most of my weight in my middle region and my cortisol is also elevated. My oxidative stress and inflammation markers are low. I sleep well and I meditate and do breath practices. I can't tolerate stronger statins due to side effects. I know exercise will help and am getting back on the wagon. What else can I do to reverse all of this. Thank you. Desire: Hi, is heavy metal intoxication related to Autism/ASD? Is there any treatment recommended if they are related to reducing the effects of heavy metals e.g diet, vitamin or natural therapies? Audrey: Hi Dr. Cabral. I've been listening to to show for several years now and it has truly changed my life. Thank you. I've searched for this question but have not found it on the archives. Is broken 8-9 hrs of sleep still considered getting a full 8 hrs sleep? My 6 month old still wakes up once a night, so for instance I will get 6 hrs of straight sleep then another 2-3 hrs after I feed her and she goes back down Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions! - - - Show Notes & Resources: http://StephenCabral.com/2248 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Dr. Cabral's New Book, The Rain Barrel Effect https://amzn.to/2H0W7Ge - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: http://CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Sleep & Hormones Test (Run your adrenal & hormone levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - > View all Functional Medicine lab tests (View all Functional Medicine lab tests you can do right at home for you and your family)

** TW; This podcast does talk about some short themes of suicide, eating disorders, and body dysphoria Mission Statement: Our podcast is meant to bring disabled musicians of all kind regardless of background, instrument, genre they perform, their field in the music scene, and beyond to discuss ableism in music. We hope our podcast creates conversations in music across our scene This week I had the honor of having Peter Oselador and Angelina Howard on to talk about Autism, their experiences in music, and learn more about autism in general. A little bit about them: Peter Oselador: "Peter Oselador is a 21-year-old autistic piano and composition student at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music. A junior in the program, he has written heavily for acoustic ensembles of all sizes and instrumental makeups, and is currently studying electronic composition. In addition to his degree concentrations, Peter also sings and plays trumpet in several of Crane's ensembles, and has vested interests in contemporary classical, jazz, video game soundtracks, and several other styles. His hobbies outside of music include coffee, speedcube solving, 1A yoyoing, video games, and bike riding. Peter is currently in the process of writing a duet for bass clarinet and violin, and will soon begin composing a piece for two pianos." Angelina Howard: " Hi my name is Angy and I have played the violin since I was 5 years old. I have autism and music has saved my life. When I was younger I used music as a coping mechanism when I got over stimulated. I started playing in orchestras outside of the school music program in 6th grade and that's when I realized I wanted music in my career. I also love performing my violin and sharing my love of music to others. I am currently a sophomore at the Crane School of Music and SUNY Potsdam majoring in Music Business and Arts Management and a concentration in Music Technology. It is because of music that I am still here today and I am forever grateful. Welcome to the 16th episode of UberNeuro. Delighted to welcome a seasoned interviewee to the UberNeuro recording desk today. Phil Argent (like this host) has been around since the early days of the web. As one of the original QXL Ricardo (remember them?) team he helped scale a massive 9 figure dotcom success story. And that was after working with Richard Branson at Virgin in the 90s. With multiple roles since and a new disruptive gardening business resurgent today, Phil discovered his ADHD officially in recent years and has embraced his superpower as a way of forging a new world for him and others. A most enlightening chat for anyone with an interest in NeuroDiversity and the impact it is having on business. Welcome to the 15th episode of UberNeuro. Today's guest is ground-breaking for UberNeuro in two ways. 1) This is the first face to face podcast where we were in the same room for the recording...which just adds to the atmosphere we felt. 2) David Chernick is the first DJ building a specialism in serving Neurodiverse clients that we've ever heard of (https://www.jiggle.in/). There is nothing typical (by any measure) about David and his journey as a super sensitive and aware Sales Coach and DJ that led him to the opportunity to serve a family needing a party for their Neurodiverse child. He found he had a gift for bringing an awesome party to that family because of (rather than despite) their challenges. We spoke to David about the challenge he met in serving that family and what happened next. Welcome to the tenth episode of UberNeuro. Into double figures and it's appropriately a bit more amazing than normal. Not gonna lie, all our interviewees are fascinating humans but this guest has the biggest public profile of any guest so far and is using it for good so we applaud the chance to interview her about her journey with ADHD and Dyslexia. Esteemed UberNeuro listeners, please give it up for Tyla Carr (https://www.instagram.com/tylarosie/). LoveIsland meets UberNeuro! Tyla's ADHD & Dyslexia journey is a seemingly typical one. Deemed naughty and full of misbehaviour at school it created friction in the family and so when she was finally diagnosed it was a huge relief to know it's not her fault. Over time Tyla shares how she got addicted to proving people wrong. Now, she can hyper focus when she loves what she's doing. Learn how Tyla coped and thrived and how being a mum to Archie gives her an excuse to be full of energy. Welcome to the ninth episode of UberNeuro. We speak with Haley Moss (https://www.instagram.com/haleymossart/), Attorney with Autism, Advocate, Speaker, Author and so much more. Oh, and she is only just turning 25 by the way. In the 90s stereotypes on Autism were set by Temple Grandin & Dustin Hoffman's performance in the epic flick Rainman. Haley was then a non-verbal 3 year old diagnosed with ASD. She cried a lot and didn’t socialise. People didn’t want to speak about it. But Haley had an amazing and supportive family that just wanted to let her play and be loved. The challenges changed and evolved as she got older and at 25 it’s all so different. but she powers through them seemingly effortlessly on the surface but clearly with immense focus and energy to overcome. As she says 'These are the cards I have been dealt and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.' Haley now focusses on making sure everyone’s voices within NeuroDiversity can be heard. Amazing human. Honoured to interview her. As ever sharing one's story is valuable for the sharers and those listening, with or without a NeuroDiversity themselves, or indeed for those parenting, mentoring, coaching and working with anyone with a NeuroDiversity. ============================ UberNeuro explores the world of Neuro Diverse Super Heroes. My son was recently diagnosed with Autism (ASD) and to inspire him my mission is to interview amazing champions and winners from the worlds of business, sports, film & tv, music, etc who have triumphed despite (or often because?) of their neuro diversity. We will ask them three questions and see where the conversation takes us over 10-15 minutes. What challenge did you face? What happened next? Where are you now? The only question that remains is who should we interview next? WEB: uberneuro.com TWITTER: twitter.com/uberneuro INSTAGRAM: instagram.com/uberneuro FACEBOOK: facebook.com/uberneuro
Welcome to the eighth episode of UberNeuro. We find ourselves crossing the pond once again but this time to interview Gretchen Leary (https://www.instagram.com/gretchenleary/). She is an author of two kids books (and more), advocate, blogger, speaker, life coach and a columnist for Activate 4 Autism (https://geekclubbooks.com/gretchen-being-brave/). As if that wasn't amazing enough Gretchen is also CEO and Founder of BostonCalm (https://www.instagram.com/bostoncalm/) - a 501c3 non-profit providing sensory tools to those with #ASD & #Tourette Syndrome in hospitals & schools in MA in the North Eastern US. We covered a lot of ground during this interview but we just could not stop talking and exploring with Gretchen. We learned that she didn’t talk about sensory issues as a child and remained undiagnosed until 23. Prior to that it had all just been brushed under the rug and dismissed as anxiety. Something we think a lot of people will be able to identify with. Find out what happened next and how Gretchen has built the incredible world above around her. Welcome to the seventh episode of UberNeuro. This time we were delighted to chat with Advanced Driving Instructor & BNI Business Networking legend... Paul Connelly. We learned about the myriad challenges Paul faced in his childhood that would have left most hopeless yet Paul not only survived but thrived, despite as he puts it, having left school with straight A’s...all absences. His philosophy is one of standing up and being counted, of making your own path. Find out how Paul has built not only one business but two and achieved significant recognition for his achievements in moving himself forwards and in helping others do the same. Welcome to the sixth episode of UberNeuro. We chatted with SuperMum and NeuroDiverse Human Zoe. About her challenges as a youngster where she just 'flunked and bunked' her way through school as she didn't know what was going on and to adulthood and motherhood where her skills have led her to her specific path in life. Find out what challenges she faced, what happened next and where he is now. Welcome to the fifth episode of UberNeuro. We chatted with SuperMum Kellie Barker who created the most amazing clothing range (https://www.bornanxious.co.uk/) for her Autistic son (and for all of us for that matter as a result of course). We heard about her originally on the BBC, loved the clothes, bought the clothes and just had to interview her. Kellie just wants to make being kind cool and her clothing carries a message designed to bring the kindness. She has an incredible practical wisdom about her that clearly comes from being a mum to an autistic son and hit home with her point that behaviour brings judgement, that some people think they can judge other peoples children. She blew us away when she clarified that parenting is about the emotional needs of the child and that too many parents are just not present. Ultimately the biggest takeaway for us was that children experience emotional events not behavioural ones. Find out what challenges she faced, what happened next and where he is now. Recent studies have shown that as many as 1 out of every 142 children born today will be diagnosed some where on the autism spectrum (ASD). Even now very little is known about the causes of the symptoms associated with ASD. In this episode I interview John Roedel. He shares his family journey with ASD and how they have used EFT in that journey.
