POLITICO's Westminster Insider
How to be a UK Ambassador to the US

POLITICO's Westminster Insider

Peter Mandelson, the new British ambassador to the United States, has finally taken up the daunting challenge of being the U.K.'s Trump whisperer. And it's clear the man dubbed the prince of darkness will need to use every trick in his book to ensure the U.K. emerges unscathed – or even, perhaps, benefits - from Trump's America First agenda.  This week on Westminster Insider, Patrick Baker speaks to some of Mandelson's predecessors and those who know a thing or two about how to master Washington D.C., for their advice on how to make a success of the most prestigious diplomatic gig of all. Britain's former Ambassador to the U.S. under Obama, Peter Westmacott, is a man who knows how to throw a good party. He explains how to use the opulent British ambassador's residence to bring in the great and the good of American politics and reflects on the personal nature of the relationships he formed.  Author Anthony Seldon evokes the historic power of the special relationship and details the British cultural assets diplomats have at their disposal for wooing the Washington elites.  Catherine Meyer — the wife of the late Christopher Meyer, who served as ambassador under Tony Blair — explains how she was often deployed to take advantage of the seating plan at glitzy downtown dinners in D.C., trying to coax a secret or two out of the notoriously tight-lipped Vice-President Dick Cheney.  Blair's ambassador during the Iraq war, David Manning, recalls the intensity of being a wartime diplomat — and how he relied on close access to the Bush White House to make sure Britain's voice was heard. Kim Darroch, who served during the first Trump term before an abrupt leak-induced exit, explains how best to deal with any unexpected, early morning social media outbursts — and says it is vital to ensure you keep in with the billionaires upon whom Trump relies for economic advice. John Bolton, Trump's former national security adviser, tells Patrick who he thinks has fared best with the US President and why (hint: it has something to do with golf) and says a safer choice might have been a career diplomat.  And Jenny Wright — formerly the embassy press adviser to recently-departed ambassador Karen Pierce — reveals how she and her team used a cup of tea to devastating diplomatic effect. This weekend, President Joe Biden is headed to Europe. His first stop: the U.K. Biden is scheduled to meet with both His Royal Highness King Charles, an old acquaintance and fellow head of state; and the Right Honorable Rishi Sunak, Britain's prime minister and a fellow head of government – who just visited Biden in Washington this past month.  On the agenda for these meetings: climate change, the war in Ukraine, and the “Atlantic Declaration” – that's the diplomatic term for Biden and Sunak's push to renew the U.K. and America's partnership across a host of economic and security issues facing the West.  Joining to talk about these issues as well as Britain and America's special relationship is Karen Pierce, the British Ambassador to the United States. Pierce is one of the U.K.'s most experienced diplomats, having held an array of senior positions including ambassadorships to the U.N., the WTO, and Afghanistan; as well as directing British policy throughout South Asia, Pakistan, and Afghanistan during some key years of the War on Terror.  On this episode of Playbook Deep Dive, Pierce tells host and Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza what Sunak hopes to get out of Biden's trip to London; how Britain and America's relationship has changed throughout her many years of service; how the war in Ukraine is driving the two countries closer – and occasionally further apart; who Brits admire the most in our nation's history; and what her secrets are for dealing with cagey diplomats on the other side of the bargaining table. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Karen Pierce is the British Ambassador to the U.S. Kara Tabor is a producer for POLITICO audio.  Alex Keeney is a senior producer for POLITICO audio.

Leading Professionally in a Toxic Workplace with Karen Pierce

Ready to Lead

It can be hard to know how to navigate a really tough environment as a leader. This is how one woman did it really well.   On today's episode, host Jeff Mask sits down with Karen Pierce, CEO of KMP Consultants, to talk about best practices in leadership and how to deal with tough, even toxic, work environments. Karen and Jeff met at an event where Karen told him, “we speak a very similar language.” It's true. They do. The bottom line? They both believe deeply that leadership is all about putting people first. It's not as much about skills and getting things done. It's about developing people, inspiring them, motivating them.    Karen heard someone say once: “You can't be a leader if nobody's following you. And if nobody's following you, you're just out on a nice walk.”    Listen in for some great examples of leading well when things aren't going so great.    What Karen Does Now and How She Got Here   Karen helps leaders in organizations navigate change by developing an environment where people can thrive and have fun, feel valued, like they have a place, like they're a part of the organization, not just someone who gets assigned a task.   Work doesn't have to be a four-letter word, she says. It should be rewarding and affirming. We spend at least a third of our waking hours there. Rather than endure it to the weekend, we should feel like we're contributing to something better than ourselves. As we look at this Great Resignation, employees are voting with their feet. If we don't create an environment where they can thrive, they're heading somewhere else.    Karen's journey started when she was a young female aerospace engineer who faced a significant amount of resistance in spite of her ability. Women just weren't respected in the field, in general, and being good at what she did turned out to be more negative than positive. She could work really hard and do a great job and still not be part of the team.    People felt threatened by her. Her work was sabotaged. When she got promotions, people talked about who she slept with to get there. Her life was even threatened. She came to a decision point. Pursue this or quit and find something else. “I have a purpose here,” she decided. “I can try to make a difference.” Maybe she could change people's minds and make things better for the women who came after her.    Dealing with Toxic Work Environments   Over the course of her career, Karen has handled toxic work environments with grace. At one point, Karen's boss sent a problem employee to her. This employee was frustrated with his job, was feeling very threatened, and had almost hit his manager. He was dealing with mental health issues that people didn't know about at the time, putting Karen in a difficult situation. He threatened her life at one point, but no one believed her. It wasn't until they were in court (he sued her) and had an outburst, that her lawyer realized her life was in danger.    Leading through mental health challenges is so tough, and is part of a leader's reality more now than it's ever been. Passing employees from one leader to the next isn't the best idea. Help them be extraordinary first in their current role, before passing them on. If it's happened more than twice, don't be seduced as a leader, thinking you can be a hero. There's a pattern there.    Not being believed is a frustrating, even terrifying, thing. It took a lot of guts for Karen to raise red flags, because she was young and female. She didn't want to be a failure. She asked good questions and kept good records, and eventually the truth came to light.    Fast forward in her career to when she got a leadership position that several people she was leading wanted. They were in an open office environment with about 40 people. The VP came barreling in, hair on fire, screaming obscenities, and heading toward her desk. Apparently, she had written something in her weekly report that had made its way to the President's desk, and this guy had gotten flak for it and decided to humiliate her.    She calmly stood up and said, “I think this conversation would work better in the conference room.” She went and he followed, and it just got worse. She finally said, “I think we're both upset and should take a breather and reconvene when we're calm.” Everyone saw her walk out and walk back to her desk where she had a private meltdown.   What Karen Did Right   Karen noticed immediately after that encounter that her esteem at the company rose incredibly. She had shown that she respected herself, sending a message to her team that she would have their backs and respect them as well. She could have cowered in the man's presence, f-bombed right back at him, even assaulted him. But she responded with grace and dignity, clarity and confidence.    She had the discernment to know to take it somewhere private, then the discernment to stop it so he could calm down. People gravitated to her to be led by her because of how she led herself in that moment. Her boss recognized that he could rely on her to be professional when things were uncomfortable, and her peers stepped up their game. She elevated the game for everyone.    Ask yourself these questions about Karen's situation:   Where does this apply to me as a leader? How has it applied to me in the past? How might it apply to me in the future? How will I choose to respond if this happens to me?   In the end, good wins over bad, Karen says. It's up to you to maintain your own principles. Jeff likes to call these character-revealing moments. Our character is developed in the private moments when no one is watching. In business, we have all sorts of moments where things don't go the way we want. Whatever the stress is, those are character-revealing moments.    Choose to respond positively, powerfully, and productively. It's our choice. It's a lot easier to lead when things are great. In leadership, we show our face when tough times arise.    Leadership is about others, Karen says. It's about the people you lead. Take the ego out of it. Don't take things personally. Think about how you can help others get through it.   Richard and Jeff want to hear from YOU. Was something in today's episode a big aha moment for you? Anything you disagreed with? If you think of life as integrated, things shift and blend, rather than win or lose' (Karen Pierce) Today our conversation is about having it all, a successful professional career and loving, nurturing family life. Like me, my guest today, Karen Pierce, had (and still has) it all. Her early achievements as a pilot and aerospace engineer, are awesome.  In today's world we hear a lot about overwhelm, and of having to maintain a work-life balance. Karen suggests that striving to  balance work and life may not be the right approach.  Karen Pierce, is an author, speaker, executive coach and consultant.  As a businesswoman and pilot ,her career broke new ground for women in the corporate world.  Graduating top of her aerospace engineering class, Karen led large teams at leading aerospace firms like Honeywell and Northwest Airlines, searching out new technologies, and implementing multiple 9-figure programs on a worldwide basis.  With her family, she  spent 16 years in Asia, beginning  her own business helping with the growth and success of non-profits and educational institutions in Japan and China.  Back in  the US, she consults and coaches technology and marketing for both small, high-tech startup businesses and major corporations.  Happily married 40 years to the man of her dreams, they raised two amazing men while juggling dynamic careers, and 22 moves-10 internationally. In Episode 21 of Dr. Dave On Call, we revisit pediatric mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. We welcome back Child-Adolescent Psychiatrist, Dr. Karen Pierce. Dr. Pierce is a Clinical Associate Professor of Child Psychiatry at Northwestern University. She is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Psychiatric Association. She is currently in private practice in Chicago, Illinois. The research demonstrates that COVID-19 is affecting the mental health of children and adolescents at an alarming rate and that depression and anxiety are becoming even more prevalent. We are seeing these staggering effects of the pandemic on pediatric mental health all over the world. For example, a survey of 1143 parents measuring the effects of the lockdowns in Italy and Spain, nearly 86% reported changes in their children such as difficulty concentrating and spending more time online and asleep, and less time engaging in physical activity. In China, a study of 2330 schoolchildren found that the rates of anxiety and depression has risen during the pandemic. In the United States, the proportion of Emergency Department mental health–related visits for children aged 5–11 and 12–17 years increased approximately 24%. and 31%, respectively when compared to 2019. It is imperative that we monitor indicators of children's mental health. We must encourage appropriate coping mechanisms to facilitate resilience. Importantly, we must expand access to critical mental health services to support children's mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Episode 7 of Dr. Dave On Call, we discuss pediatric mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic with Child-Adolescent Psychiatrist, Dr. The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for all of us, including children/adolescents. Family members should be aware of that their child(ren) may be experiencing mental health distress. Usually, they will not be able to verbalize their concerns. Their mental health distress may include exhibiting maladaptive behaviors like acting out, arguments, and distancing themselves. As the majority of us are mitigating in our residences, it is important that we utilize our own physical space during times of distress, especially during conflict resolution. This defined "safe space", can create security, a time to decompress and regulate our emotions. As schools are now reliant on distance-learning platforms, we should understand that this added screen time can actually have a positive role in our children's' development. Further, we should understand that this increased screen-time for learning will not lead to maladaptive or sedentary behaviors. This learning process may actually provide an opportunity for collective learning at home with the family. It may be difficult to convey the importance of physical distancing with adolescents, as they have a strong desire for connections with their peers and significant others. However, we must be very clear the health risks of failing to physically distance themselves with non-family members. As adults and supportive family members, The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry recommends that we: -Be open and supportive so children/adolescents can ask questions. -Be authentic about the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. -Reassure children/adolescents that it is acceptable to have fears about this uncertainty. -Reassure our children of their personal safety and immediate family members. -Don't overwhelm them, but be realistic. Karen Pierce is the UK's new Permanent Representative at the UN in New York, Britain's most senior ambassadorial post. She only started in the role three weeks ago and has been thrown in at the deep end with the chemical weapons attack in Syria. Friends and colleagues alike are struck by her glamorous and colourful sense of style. This includes high heels, to the dismay of her security detail in places like Afghanistan, who fear her footwear could impede a swift exit. We hear how she tackles meetings fearlessly, and has been known to reduce a roomful of shouting men to silence, without raising her voice. Becky Milligan looks at the life of an unusual diplomat, who may now be facing her biggest challenge yet. Producers: Arlene Gregorius and Ros Jones.

Karen Pierce, former UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, talks about the works of art on display in her official residence in New York during the time she was working there. Pierce was filmed in London, in front of Yinka Shonibare’s Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle, a work in the Government Art Collection that seems appropriate in the context of the United Nations, given its issues of globalisation and cultural identity. Pierce explains how art can help to lend a sense of permanence to the British presence in New York and plays a vital diplomatic role through emphasising connections between the US and the UK.
