We caught up with Rita Bliss while she was working hard in Dallas! We chatted about her recent release “Peaches and Apple Pies,” her monthly residency at Batch Brewing and Kolaches in Austin, TX and finding family at ‘the best bar in Texas.'   Rita Bliss is a folk musician from Rochester, New York and is now based in Austin Texas. Though a Rust Belt native, Rita's melodies are rooted in familiar old-time banjo sounds that evoke travels along the backroads of the South. Influenced by John Prine, Joni Mitchell, and Nanci Griffith,Rita's songwriting weaves together timeless love stories with long drives, porch gatherings, and letters between loved ones. The love stories are unabashedly queer, the porch gatherings are sometimes rowdy, and the conversations often touch on true-to-life mental health challenges.  Check Rita out here:  Website: Ritabliss.com  Patreon: Rita Bliss  IG: ritablissbanjo  YouTube: Rita Bliss Banjo  Facebook: Rita Bliss Music

The conversation touches on the remarkable rise of artificial intelligence and its current bubble-type behaviour, using NVIDIA as an example to explore the implications of high valuations relative to earnings.Gareth and Steve also touch on inflation and its impact on the economy, mentioning positive developments out of the US, with Australia likely six months behind, given the persisting labour pressures. Tune in and join Steve and Gareth as they try a locally made American Pale Ale by Batch Brewing in Marrickville, Sydney.Show Notes:Joel Greenblatt podcast (mentioned by Gareth) - IC Interviews: Joel GreenblattThe Economist article on San Francisco - Downtown San Francisco is at a tipping-pointYou can also find us on:Twitter - @ForagerFundsFacebook - Forager Funds Management LinkedIn - Forager Funds ManagementInstagram - Forager_FundsFor regular videos, investment insights, and fund updates, visit www.foragerfunds.com.

In this special edition of Beer is a Conversation, we talk about beer money. As we recorded this, the Batch Brewing crowd-sourced funding campaign has been open for a day and has exceeded its minimum target, and is halfway to the $1.5 million full raise. Incidentally, it has nearly raised more in a day than BrewDog has in four months. While the expression of interest phase has been going for a few weeks, we hadn't covered the raise until now as the company's financials and valuations hadn't been available which we considered important to any meaningful discussion of the investment raise. Now it's out, we get to discuss the Batch business and its valuation with Chris Sidwa and Andrew Fineran. As you'll hear it's a pretty robust discussion, as we talk about the - arguably - inflated valuations that crowdsourced funding permits for businesses and the prospects that they will be able to execute their expansion strategy in a highly competitive marketplace. Matt is a big fan of Batch and Andrew and Chris, and respects them even more for being willing to openly discuss some of the important, sometimes challenging questions asked about equity crowdfunding their business. I'm happy to be corrected on that if anyone has information to the contrary. There's yet another brewery soon to join their ranks by the end of 2019, with the news that Philter Brewing is poised to set up shop just down the road from the original Batch Brewing facility.Co-founder Sam Fuss joined me for a chat about this momentous development for Philter, which has fast become one of Australia's larger independent beer brands without having a brewery of its own.And meanwhile, the company has picked up a slew of trophies for its flagship XPA.Sam and I chat about the Marrickville brewing scene, and whether the emergence of so many breweries in one suburb is a good thing. But also, we find out a bit more about Sam's brewing career, which began at Little Creatures in 2000.There, Sam worked alongside Creatures' first ever brewer, Janice McDonald, who was one of the first guests on the Drinks Adventures podcast, back in Season One.A special thanks to Chris Lukianenko AKA The Beer Healer for recently having me on his podcast, The Beer Healer Interviews. It was something of a new experience for me, having Chris ask the questions for a change. If you want a little more insight into my background and how Drinks Adventures was conceived, please head on over to The Beer Healer Interviews.Help us fund Season Three by purchasing your limited edition podcoasters here.Follow James Atkinson on Facebook here, Instagram here and Twitter here.Theme music ‘Sandbox’ by Rudists.

In this episode, I paid a visit to my old mate Andrew at Batch Brewing. After a pint of my favourite WCIPA, he suggested we take a drive out the new "Small Batch" brewery at Petersham...which I of course accepted. There has been a lot going on at Batch since we spoke last...co-founder Chris has returned to the USA but has found a way to be able to work remotely, and Andrew has been busy fulfilling the plans the boys had to start a small experimental brewery "just around the corner".I was keen to share a beer with Andrew to find our what kind of flexibility the new venue will give them, what beers and collaborations they had on the horizon and exactly how stressful it is starting a second brewery. Even though they had done it all before, there was still a lot to learn when doing it all again. As usual, he is pretty open and honest about what's been happening, and shares some news about a festival they are involved with, and their plans for the summer.

Batch Brewing Company is in the heart of the Craft Beer mecca known as the inner west of Sydney. Taking a look at the local area these days, you will see over ten breweries littered around the suburbs in that area, but back in 2013 when Batch opened its doors, the numbers were more like 2 or 3.Fast forward 6 years and Batch is embarking on a new era for the company, with a second site almost ready to open, one of the founders returning to his homeland, and lots of new challenges in what has become a pretty crowded beer market.Andrew Fineran, also known as Chuck ,and Chris Sidwa, two ex-pat Americans began with a dream back in 2011 or so…they wanted to brew great beer for the people and start a true community brewery. Being that Andrew was a marketer for Lion Beer at the time and Chris was wrapped up in the world of high finance, they had all the skills they needed to make great beer…or so they thought. In this episode we take a bit of a look back at the past, the lessons learned and the mistakes made, and how they learned from those to create a thriving community brewery. We also take a look into the future as the boys embark on an exciting new era with a new venue that will help them get back to what made them successful...creating small batch beers, and many of them!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer

This time we chat with Chris about his new book, Brew a Batch: A beginner's guide to home-brewed beer. As a beginners guide to getting into homebrew, Brew a Batch is a recommended read. But where the book really comes into its own is where Chris infuses homebrewing with a wider meaning. He weaves in to the guide much of his brewing philosophy and his approach to sustainability in away that shows how small batch brewing can be - arguably should be - part of a broader consumer movement. His book is Brew a Batch: A beginner's guide to home-brewed beer. You can get it online at the Batch store, and in bookshops nationally.

This episode takes us down to the historical Detroit neighborhood Cork Town with Head Brewer and Founder of Batch Brewing Co. Stephen Roginson. You may know Batch Brewing from their Kickstarter Campaign, as the 2013 Hatch Detroit contest winner, as one of the hottest new brewpubs in Detroit. Stephen was such a great interview. He has a great story about how he got into brewing and how he hustled to get Batch Brewing Co. up and running. They are one the hottest new brewpubs around and not only are they producing creative and flavorful beers but they are also using their brewery to give back to the community with the Feelgood Tap. Go down and enjoy a beer, some food, and some good conversation. This episode I am going to highlight a bottle opener company that is running their kickstarter campaign right now, Eagle Lock Company Cap-Off Bottle Opener. This is an awesomely unique bottle opener and conversation starter. American made, hand crafted bottle openers using the original Eagle Lock Company design from the 1940's. Mike and Matt have a great product and I want their kickstarter campaign to succeed. So go check them out on Kickstarter Eagle Cap-off bottle opener and support the cause! Episode 95...and on our fifth episode from the new studio, we had a pretty packed room with guests covering all sorts of topics.  Open data in the city of Detroit and an upcoming hackathon to find better ways to use it.  Updates from our friends at Detroit Beer Press about their latest issue.  A check in nearly two years later with Batch Brewing Company on how things are going downtown.  A look at the state of the Detroit tech scene from the eyes of someone still in school and breaking into the industry. Don't forget you can get 10% off Squarespace's offerings by using discount code IT during the checkout process: http://www.squarespace.com/, and you can try QuickBooks for self-employed tryselfemployed.com/it And so, so much more... After our 1995 themed intro came to a close, our opening segment kicked off with a recap of our last event and information about our upcoming events, the depressing information that both The Goonies and Ferris Bueller's Day Off are now both thirty years old, the hilarious (to us) story about a member of ISIS posting a selfie that led to an airstrike less than 24 hours later, a very concerning tale about how the Red Cross spent over $500 million in Haiti after the terrible earthquakes there...and yet somehow managed to only build six houses, Gamestop's purchase of ThinkGeek's parent company, our lovely new kegerator stocked with the Scurvy Dan Blood Orange IPA from Falling Down Beer Company and more. In our second segment, we dove in with our guests David Lingholm, the Director of Digital Media and Community Engagement for the City of Detroit, and Erin Sommerville, Media Relations Specialist for Automation Alley.  There's a hackathon coming up this weekend, #Hack4Detroit, that's looking to find some better uses for the massive amounts of data that the city has accumulated over the years, and there's some decent prize money for those who can help.  Designers, coders, and even just folks with ideas are welcome...but the signup cutoff is Wednesday, so hurry: http://www.automationalley.com/Events/Calendar/Event-Detail.aspx?uniqueid=16840 In segment three, we checked in with our friends Courtney Ochab, Ian Burk and Tony Barchok from Detroit Beer Press and Stephen Roginson of Batch Brewing Company.  Batch Brewing was on waaaaaaaaay back in episode 10 of our show when they were a finalist (and eventual winner!) of the Hatch Detroit competition in 2013, and they've come a long way since then.  Not only are they open, but they're in full swing with production of a number of great beers, have a solid kitchen, and have a monthly "feel good tap" where a portion of the proceeds go to a local organization.  Can't beat that. Detroit Beer Press isn't doing to shabby either, with their latest issue in breweries, distilleries and locations throughout the area...which hypothetically might include another IT in the D style rant.  Updates about their Howler Club Membership program and more await your ears. In our fourth and final segment (no, still no infamous fifth segments in the new studio as of yet), we talked with Kevin Hill, a local guy still in college at RIT, and working his way into the Detroit tech scene.  We met Kevin at our Hopcat event back in May, and absolutely had to have him join us in-studio to continue that conversation on air.  He's got some great perspectives on how things look from his point of view - what he sees going well, going wrong, what works, what doesn't, and just a great take on things in general. And that brought us to a close.  Tune in next week as we're joined by Right Brain Networks to talk about DevOps among other topics, Make Moore Media to talk film and production, and Yum Village to talk about their group's organization and event.
