Aotearoa's craft beer industry is hoping for a profitable summer as it continues to wrestle with high brewing costs. A fourth craft beer business has hit major financial trouble this week as importer and distributor Beertique is in liquidation. It follows Deep Creek, which is also in liquidation, and Brothers Beer which is in voluntary administration. Meanwhile beer fans say they're finding it harder to afford their favourite crafties, as the cost of living bites. Felix Walton has more. Note: Epic brewery was in liquidation but is now under new ownership.

Manfred Meraner lebt in Bozen, Südtirol.

I give my thoughts on the RESILIENCE BUTTE COUNTY PROUD IPA, and some other craft beer news.
Sounds great, right? Pay just a buck a beer? After all, who wouldn’t want to enjoy a beer for less than it takes to buy a coffee? Well, that’s exactly what Ontario beer drinkers have been promised by the new Premier, Doug Ford, following a campaign promise he ran on. But is the offer as good as it seems? Not so fast. Following the announcement, craft brewers and craft beer drinkers alike swiftly pushed back on the notion, citing how much it costs to brew quality beer, along with employee costs, overheads, marketing, and more. In this week’s Marketing on Tap podcast, we discuss the buck a beer backlash, why it shows how key it is to build loyalty and brand advocacy, and why truth in marketing is so important in the long run when combating quick buck campaign ideas. Settle back and enjoy this week’s topic, brought to you in the usual unscripted manner that you’ve come to expect when Sam and Danny take the mic. Read the transcript
Beer people love to talk about how the beverage they care about so much has brought the same kind of sentiment with other human beings. We’re often finding ways that malt, barley, hops and yeast have given us another figurative ingredient: friends. For those of us who think about beer too much, it’s always a treat to find like-minded others wherever we go. In June, I found myself in downtown Madrid while staying in the city as part of short media tour hosted by Mahou San Miguel. I wanted to find some local craft beer and Google led me to Bee Beer Craft Beer and Cheeses, a small bottle shop with brands from around Spain, most notably the namesake brewery of the business. It was there I wound up chatting with owner Xavier Losada, learning about what led him to open a craft-focused store in a market where that kind of beer still feels a little new. Xavier has a curiosity to create something new that wouldn’t feel too out of place in an American market and he’s working to change the mentality of locals, not just tourists like me who wander into a welcoming bar that feels like home. These kinds of conversations, where there’s an international insight to trends or interests we may take for granted stateside, can be so valuable. It’s a time to meet others who are watching what’s happening in beer with a new perspective and better grasp all the changes taking place as craft beer becomes increasingly important around the globe. I heard all that from Xavier, who also actively watches the boundaries of flavor as he creates new brands to serve under the Bee Beer banner.
We came in not really having a plan, so we decided to talk about... CRAFT BEER. We LOVE craft beer. Our favorites are definitely stouts and IPAs.

Traditionally craft beer has been in glass bottles, but in recent years there has been an increase in the number of craft beer canned products. When starting a brewery, a major cost can be the bottling or canning line. West Coast Canning in Vancouver, BC provide the solution with their mobile canning lines. I spoke with co-owner Matt Leslie about how they started, and if cans are better for craft beer.
