Gender-based discrimination can be subtle. But its impact is still damaging.
Discussions of sexism are commonplace in public discourse. And despite government policies aimed to ensure equality between women and men, the problem persists. Even if in your immediate environment, sexism seems to be gone for good, you may be thinking of sexism in its classical sense. Experts say that more discreet forms remain, and benevolent sexism is one of them. Benevolent sexism is part of another theory presented by Peter Glick and Susan Fiske in 1996. The two scholars coined the term ambivalent sexism, defined as the coexistence of hostile sexism and benevolent sexism toward women. Within that concept, hostile sexism refers to explicitly negative attitudes to individuals who violate traditional gender roles. Can a form of prejudice really be benevolent? What kind of remarks, for example? But something called benevolent can't be too harmful, can it? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Chivalry is a cornerstone of modern dating etiquette, but researchers say it can have a dark side, leading to hostile sexism and undermining a woman's confidence. How does benevolent sexism impact us? And can you show attentiveness on a date without it being seen as a red flag?

Hey! Pardon The delay, lots of parties!! Got to do my first Bat Mitzvah, it was fun! I also have some new inspiration visuals up on the channel. Gotta share some stories that caught my eye: da robots, random shots at Earth, and Jay-Z gives us another reason to admire him, I'm sure he's now more of an equality type dude in his relationship. I wonder this because watching marriage boot camp hip hop edition put a battery in my back about these men and BS. Not Bull Shi…but another kind of B.S. Got the Random Question and Nerd in Me. Let's Get into it. Da Robots, Creative Lab Ventures with Trill or Not Trill introduced the first bilingual Afro Latina A.I bot. Now we talked about this before, the movie Super Intelligence warns of some of the issue. The AI has been reading skewed data. If we know society has been treating folks improper then can't we assume the data needs to be tweaked? Listen to the bot. Just saying. We need more brown skinned girls getting into the sciences. Since C.L.Ai.R.A is here to stay so…. Did you know we had a close call the other day???? So, an asteroid unseen until it passed by because it came from the direction of the sun, whizzed by Canada and Greenland. Yoooooo!! We kinda do need the new telescope that is in development for NASA. Nerd In Me (All love) So this new telescope will be out in 2026 but in Nov, NASA is starting they DART program. A Bumper Move Bitch type program. Onto Jay Z, did you know he is trying to help a prisoner serving time for weed? We talked about this when the laws first changed, should nonviolent weed offenders get records wiped or be released? At least give them a job with a title they have already shown they can be in business. The filibuster. I'm no politician, but why aren't the Dems remembering what happens when one side gets control? When the Dem's argued for change and got it, the very next Presidency it came to bite us in the ass. The Judges anyone? Anyway, onto some juicy real talk. So, I have been having a question, then watching Marriage Boot Camp I really had a burning question. Why do women put up with so much BS to prove they love a man???? Did you know there is a term? B.S. It's Benevolent Sexism. It's where we women and where men find your value in being a good Mom, Wife, Girlfriend, Friend. Sounds like it could be okay, but it turns out even though we say we want equality, most women prefer a man to open doors, pay for things and provide. Turns out though, not all, but it is way easier for a man or male identifying who is naturally benevolent in their sexism to turn ugly because they view woman as property vs. partner. Genders are important no matter how you identify, and we are equal but not the same and we have different strengths, and it should be celebrated. I so need someone with some letters behind their name to come weigh in on this. Let's get into our Random Question. Can you ever really forgive and forget? I'm sharing super personal examples here. You're no doubt familiar with 'hostile sexism' – blatantly negative or restrictive attitudes towards women. But there's another type of sexism it co-exists with - ‘benevolent sexism' - which is sometimes harder to detect. Benevolent sexism can be well-meaning and positive – describing women as natural nurturers or brilliant carers. It's linked to notions of chivalry and romance - research suggests some women even find benevolent sexism attractive. But these attitudes can still cause major harm to women in the workplace and the home.

There was a time, not too long ago when President Barack Obama was elected - that it was declared that we live in a post-racial society. A post-racial society – after 200 years of slavery. After Jim Crow. After the Civil Rights Movement. After the war on drugs in the 80s. After Rodney King. And these are just the assaults against the black community. Latinos, Asians, Arabs, and whites can produce a list of their own if we want to have a fully robust conversation about discrimination and implicit bias. Trauma, for any period of time requires healing. This nation has yet to heal – and we have learned in recent years – primarly because of the election of Barack Obama – that we are far from being a post-racial society. In fact, this era seems to mark the reemergence racial issues that the most obilivious among us were convinced no longer exists. Well, ladies and gentlemen, it does still very much exist, and much of it is fueled by our implicit biases and unintentional harm. This is what today's show will be tackling. On this episode, Dr. Pamela is joined by two passionate psychologists who share an interested in the concept of implicit bias in both children and adults. Dr. Bentley Gibson, also known as The Bias Adjuster. And Dr. Jillian Whatley, founder of Lissie's Voice – and organization designed to support the empowerment of parents. We'll be discussing imposter syndrome, internalized oppression, and psychological blind spots.

I was at a conference. We were wrapping it up with a reflection session – talking about what had been successful and possibilities for the future. Towards the end, a man stood up to say he’d been to the Women’s March and that he’d been inspired and now wanted to recognize all the women in the room. He asked us all to stand and receive applause and appreciation from the men. We stood, as requested and received the applause. And don’t get me wrong, I love applause. But this felt so so bad.
