Stāsta vēsturniece un grāmatas "Elegantā Rīga" autore Inita Saulīte-Zandere Starpkaru Latvijā galvenais noteicējs apģērbu pasaulē bija drēbnieks, jo apģērbu rūpniecisku ražotņu vēl nebija. Vienkāršākos apģērbus varēja pašūt pie kādas no neskaitāmajām šuvējām vai pati mājsaimniece, jo daudzās mājās bija šujmašīnas. Cita lieta, ja bija nepieciešams kostīms, uzvalks vai mētelis. Tam kvalitāti garantēja tikai laba drēbnieka darbs un augstvērtīgs materiāls. Drēbnieku saimes augstākā līga bija amata meistari, kas ietilpa Rīgas Mazajā ģildē jeb Svētā Jāņa ģildē. Šie apmēram 50 meistari varēja lepoties ar tiešām augstu kvalifikāciju, lielākā daļa no viņiem bija sākuši darba gaitas vēl 19. gadsimta beigās, turklāt papildinājuši zināšanas un pat strādājuši Parīzē, Berlīnē, Londonā u. c. Eiropā, un viņiem bija milzu pieredze un autoritāte. Pieminēšu vien dažus no viņiem: Kārlis Ence, Aleksandrs Placis, Andrejs Bekers, Kārlis Pops, Jēkabs Meibergs. Viens no mūsu vecmeistariem Kārlis Berris jau 1883. gadā bija uzrakstījis savu pirmo grāmatu arodizglītībā “Vadons drēbju sagriešanā”. Viņa slavenākais darbs “Drēbnieku skola” kļuva par īstu bestselleru, piedzīvojot astoņus izdevumus. 20. gados Berris vadīja piegriešanas mākslas skolu Lielajā Jēkaba ielā 30. Kārlis Berris bija arī pirmo Latvijā izdoto modes žurnālu redaktors. Jelgavā 1900.–1901. gadā iznāca žurnāls “Modes Vēstnesis”, bet no 1923. gada Berris bija žurnāla “Jaunās Parīzes Modes” redaktors, žurnāls iznāca ziņu aģentūras LETA paspārnē. Turklāt gatavo apģērbu veikalu ‘īpašnieki nereti noveda savus uzņēmumus līdz ļaunprātīgam bankrotam, attiecīgi izvairoties no ienākumu nodokļa samaksas, tādējādi gūstot peļņu un graujot godīgu konkurenci. Drēbnieki tika pakļauti Amatniecības kamerai, tika likvidētas agrākās amatnieku organizācijas, nacionalizējot to īpašumus, to skaitā Mazo ģildi.

May 24, 2022 ~ Randi Berris, VP of Marketing and Communications for the Business Leaders for Michigan, talks with Kevin and Tom about the Business Leaders for Michigan's plan: “Compete to Win: Michigan's Path to Top 10.”
On April 12, 1972, the Chinese national ping pong team arrived in Detroit, the first unofficial visitors from the People's Republic of China to the United States since the establishment of the PRC in 1949. One of the many excited people waiting on the tarmac to welcome the team was Jan Berris – at that time a program associate with the National Committee, now its vice president. Fifty years later, on April 12, 2022, Jan Berris shared stories of the historic process – from the funny to the momentous – and reflected on the enduring legacy of Ping Pong Diplomacy on U.S.-China relations. Jan Berris has been with the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations since 1971 – beginning as program associate, moving on to program director, and vice president. She is responsible for overseeing all program activities of the Committee: this includes the preparation and execution of hundreds of Chinese delegations to the United States, American delegations to China, as well as NCUSCR's Track II programs, and other flagship programs. Given her familiarity with the Chinese media at the time, the U.S. State Department asked her to coordinate Chinese press activities during Premier Deng Xiaoping's February 1979 visit to the United States, and she has been the lead for the Committee's hosting of major welcoming events for all of the most senior Chinese leaders. Prior to joining the Committee, Ms. Berris was a foreign service officer, stationed in Hong Kong and Washington, D.C. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Michigan.

In this episode of the Medicinal Herbs podcast, Berris joins host Sara Le Brun-Blashka, MS, to discuss anxiety and depression, especially when it comes to her perspective as a clinician and herbalist.
Last month, the National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) published a report for the Carnegie Corporation of New York titled “American International Relations and Security Programs Focused on China: A Survey of the Field.” This week on Sinica, Kaiser chats with the report's lead author, Rosie Levine, and with Jan Berris, long-serving vice president of the NCUSCR, who celebrates her 50th year with the National Committee this month. The report surveyed academic institutions, NGOs, and think tanks about the state of the field of American China studies at a time when relations between the U.S. and China are at their lowest in the five decades since the opening to China began under Nixon. In this week's episode of Sinica, we are proud to announce that we're joining forces with SupChina. We're also delighted that our first episode with our new partner is a conversation with President Stephen Orlins and Vice President Jan Berris of the National Committee on United States–China Relations, recorded at their offices in Manhattan. Since 1966, the same year that China's Cultural Revolution began, the National Committee has been the standard bearer for a deeper understanding of the increasingly vital relationship between the United States and China. This month marks the 50th anniversary of the organization's founding. From 1976 to 1979, Orlins served in the Office of the Legal Advisor of the U.S. Department of State, first in the Office of the Assistant Legal Advisor for the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs and then for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. While in the latter role, Orlins worked on the legal team that helped set up diplomatic relations with China. Berris has been a major force behind the visits of hundreds of American and Chinese delegations to each other's countries, including a journey undertaken in 1972 by the Chinese table tennis team, part of an exchange that became known as Ping Pong Diplomacy. We want to say a huge thank-you to David Lancashire at Popup Chinese in Beijing for six wonderful years of partnership. Best of luck to you, Dave! Earlier today, I interviewed Blake Berris (Nick Fallon) on Days of our Lives. This is a pre-recorded interview.
Blake Berris first gained attention as Nick on “Days of our Lives” and earned an Emmy nomination in 2009. After briefly leaving the show, Berris quickly lined up strong roles in a series of high profile independent films, including “Minkow” opposite James Caan and Ving Rhames. Blake and the rest of the cast are on a national fan appreciation tour, for fans to meet and greet them and tell their millions of fans how much they appreciate their support for the last 47 years the show's been on the air.
