Episode 11 features an interview with Sophie Hildebrandt about her petition to "Open Up Lyndale Drive". The 19 year old is leading the fight in her neighborhood against City Hall- and as we reported in the Winnipeg Sun, the city's own data backs up their position. Only TGCTS has investigated the pushback against bike lane plans for the Route 19 truck route corridor ("Moving on Marion") and for Provencher Blvd. Now, a third front has emerged in St. Boniface after too many residents were harassed and abused by cyclists and the City ignored the result of their own poorly executed and designed public consultation. We cover your community! To donate via E- transfer, or for advertising inquiries, news tips and your comments--martygoldlive@gmail.com Norwood Flats is bordered by St. Mary's Road on the east and ringed by Lyndale Drive which runs alongside the Red River, where there's a park and newly built AT path. Continuing a pandemic-era policy, the City has imposed summer restrictions on traffic that divert vehicles through narrow residential streets with schools, buses, parked cars, and kids. Sounds safe, eh? Because the Flats isn't laid out in a grid, some people can't get to their houses any other way, yet get threatened with tickets by police. Meanwhile, homeowners get harassed by cyclists who mistakenly think the Drive is reserved for their personal use. 6.05 - "I want the barricades gone," says Sophie Hildebrandt, and she's not alone. With 186 people already signed, the St. Boniface Facebook groups are chattering. Marty Gold asks her about the reasons she started a petition, the effect of traffic detoured past schools, and the confusion for delivery vehicles and even Post Office drivers to find addresses so complicated even Google Maps aren't accurate. 14.00 - Hear how a police officer declined to write up a $200 ticket on Sophie and on another neighbour "because he could tell I had no other way to get to my house." That's what led her to start the petition. "Even the cops who the city are employing to patrol the neighborhood and pull over only the locals who use this road, think it's redundant. They don't understand why they're there." 17.45 Part 2- Sophie was urged by her parents to take action. "Right after I got pulled over, I said yes. So I called my city councilor, sent him an email, and started a petition." "I've been complaining about this since the second it was put into place... it's still actively making our lives harder." Even though she took the City survey, she was never notified of the results. You'll hear her reaction to the actual percentages- and on ActionLine.ca you can see the survey results, after bureaucrats suspiciously failed to surpass 10% participation among the 3200 residents in Norwood Flats. The Season 5 Fundraising Drive is at $1705.00 towards our $5600 target - help us keep the momentum going by donating here! Every donor gets a copy of Retropeg as a sign of our appreciation! 24.20 - A clear majority of neighborhood residents wanted Lyndale Drive re-opened and a study done before a closure was considered. As we explain, bureaucrats included the overwhelming support of 70 cyclists- mathematically tipped the scales against the will of the community. That's how Norwood Flats got rooked. 32.00- Sophie tells of the intimidation of families using their cars from the other road users- and describes how Coun. Allard did not reply to her multiple calls and emails. 36.00 - She urges anyone interested to email her at norwoodflatspetition@gmail.com. (The petition is now at 246 supporters.) Sophie can augment the petition with the City survey results- that Matt Allard himself didn't understand - proving that the neighborhood wanted the street barriers removed and a new study done. City Council voted to do one but won't pony up the cash to pay for it. "I've been trying to get in contact with the Mayor's office... Here is proof there are hundreds of people who feel the same way I do."
Georges Bourelle is the Mayor of Beaconsfield. He spoke to Ken Connors about the concern that he has for a proposed bike path.
From the 1980s until his eventual capture in 2007, a notorious serial rapist and murderer was active in the Buffalo, New York area. Police had linked this man to three murders and numerous rapes, often attacking women along bike paths, which led to him being called “The Bike Path Killer or Rapist”. His arrest came after DNA evidence connected him to the crimes, leading to a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. This case highlighted the importance of forensic science in solving cold cases and bringing long-sought justice to his victims. Want access to our first 45 episodes? Grab em here! Fluent Fiction - Danish: The Bike Path Mishap: A Humorous Lesson Learned Find the full episode transcript, vocabulary words, and more:fluentfiction.org/the-bike-path-mishap-a-humorous-lesson-learned Story Transcript:Da: Én solrig eftermiddag sidder Lars ved sit yndlingssted i Kongens Have. Frokosten ligger tungt i maven. Lars overvejer hurtigt men beslutter i stedet at swinge til siden for at undgå dem. Men.. oh nej! Det var slet ikke, hvad Lars havde forventet. Han cykler direkte gennem springvandet! Alt går i stå. En: On a sunny afternoon, Lars sits at his favorite spot in Kongens Have. He enjoys his lunch: faithful to his daily cheese sandwich and a soft mandarin, considering the season. He sits there daily, observing people, pigeons, and the changing light over the familiar buildings. But this day is different. Lars has forgotten his bike helmet. "Oh, not again," Lars mutters. He has a habit of forgetting things. Especially his helmet. Lars knows it's important to protect his head, but he just can't remember it every time. He shakes his head and decides to ride home without a helmet, just this one time. Lars swings onto his bike, a loyal green one at that, and begins his journey home. Through Kongens Have, amidst joggers, mothers with strollers, and elderly ladies with their knitting, he pedals hard. The lunch weighs heavily in his stomach. Lars swerves onto the street and now approaches the large fountain at Amagertorv. In that moment, as he approaches the fountain, he sees them: a group of tourists taking pictures and chatting loudly. They are blocking the bike path. Should he shout, should he ring the bell? Lars considers quickly but decides instead to veer to the side to avoid them. But... oh no! That was not at all what Lars expected. He rides straight through the fountain! Everything comes to a halt. Water sprays up, Lars flails, his bike skids beneath him, and his cheese sandwich flies through the air. He can do nothing but cling onto the bike. Well, how embarrassing. Lars removes his wet glasses and wipes them on his shirt. He looks around, hoping that no one has noticed his mishap. But yes, the many tourists are standing and laughing, taking pictures, laughing even more. They probably thought it was part of a show, a piece of authentic Danish humor. Lars smiles faintly, gets up, and tightens the brakes on his bike. He doesn't want to make the same mistake twice. He lifts the bike, brushes dirt off his pants, and continues his journey home. For the rest of the trip, he had to listen to the tourists laughing and applauding. That day, Lars learned a valuable lesson: no matter how busy you are, never forget your bike helmet, and always take a deep breath when you see tourists on the bike path. It became a story he could tell over and over again with a laugh, every time he saw a fountain. And perhaps he also became somewhat famous among tourists in Copenhagen: the picture taken in the moment when Lars rides through the fountain was shared over and over again on social media as an example of Danish humor and became part of tourists' experience of Copenhagen. It was more than four decades ago that Marge Cohan started to get serious about bicycling. She had met her future husband at the Josh Billings and she was hooked. Still, she never could have imagined that she would be one of the key advocates to stretch a bike path through the Berkshires from Vermont to Connecticut. It's a slog, especially in Massachusetts where bike paths are built to strict specifications. For instance, in New York the Empire State Trail covers 750 miles, traversing multiple types of surfaces and varying widths. It's not as simple in Massachusetts where one mile of trail costs about $2 million to construct. It's built well, but it doesn't happen overnight. Today, the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail has extended now to Crane Avenue in Pittsfield from the north and will soon have another section completed to Merrill Road. As it is, the bike trail section from the Pittsfield/Lanesboro border to Crane Avenue is the most-used recreational hub in the city. The month of May is Bay State Bike month and there are several events to promote bike safety, the concept of bikes mean business and bike tourism. And there is potential for growth on the bike tourism side of things. For instance, Pittsfield lies on the path of the popular Western New England Greenway, which draws thousands of bicyclists annually. I admire Margie's longterm commitment to making it happen and her passion for bicycling. Also in this episode we cover: the politics and logistics of developing a countywide bike path, bikes mean business, e-bikes and making bicycling more accessible to people of all ages, Margie's personal experience bicycling for commuting and for enjoyment, riding groups, the challenges for those without motor vehicles in the Berkshires and its economic impact, lights (on bikes) is the law, the progress of running the bike path through Williamstown into North Adams, new laws to give bicyclists and motor vehicle operators some leeway and more. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Marge Cohan. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-krol/support
