This week, we discuss lousy quarterbacking (and lots of fumbles), the unique career of Bob Parsons; Ken Houston's stats with Houston and Washington; and running backs and tight ends becoming a larger part of the passing game. Oh, and actor Bradford Dillman's draft picks for the 49ers. Quote of the week: "Phipps to Pitts, twenty-six, equals six." Intro-outro music is "To the Well Once Too Often."

Welcome back folks! In this dose of madness we discuss successes and fails of online shopping at Temu and the blistering noir Compulsion! Compulsion is a 1959 American crime drama film directed by Richard Fleischer. The film is based on the 1956 novel of the same name by Meyer Levin, which in turn was a fictionalized account of the Leopold and Loeb murder trial. It was the first film produced by Richard D. Zanuck. Although the principal roles are played by Dean Stockwell and Bradford Dillman, top billing went to Orson Welles. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/speakeasy-noircast/message

When music journalist Myles Clarkson visits ailing piano virtuoso Duncan Ely at his palatial California home, ostensibly to interview the man, Duncan notices something distinct about Myles: his hands – they're beautiful, the bone structure perfect for a concert pianist. Myles, it turns out, is a Juilliard-trained musician whose career tanked after receiving some bad reviews. Taking an interest in Myles, Duncan introduces him to his artist daughter Roxanne. Soon Myles has entered the pianist's inner circle, much to the chagrin of Myles' wife, Paula, who feels more than a tinge of jealousy at the attention being paid to her husband. But things are about to take a turn for the uncanny. Roxanne casts a plaster life mask of Myles, and with Duncan on his way out, Myles donates blood to help him. While Myles is asleep, something happens, and when he awakes, he's changed. It's almost as if he's someone else. His urge to live, to love, to play music, is revived, leaving Paula to wonder: just what, or who, is inhabiting the body of the man she loves? Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to someone who frankly, we didn't know we absolutely needed to talk to a month ago. We are talking to actress/voice over artist Pamela Dillman. Pamela's father was actor Bradford Dillman and her stepmother was supermodel, Suzy Parker. Yes, THAT Suzy Parker. But what makes this episode so special, at least for host Josh Mills, was that Pamela grew up with and was best friends with Josh's sister Mia Kovacs. Sadly, Mia passed away in 1982 so there are very few people who remember Mia and who remember what she was like. So it was a true thrill for Josh to be able to ask Pamela questions about his sister as well as his mother Edie Adams. We do our best to try and make sure we connect about Pamela's life growing up in Beverly Hills at the very prim and proper John Thomas Dye school where she met Mia but also to talk about everything from how her father considered himself a working actor who just did his job and was honored to be an actor but how much of a cultural impact her stepmother Suzy made as literally the world's first supermodel. Hell, The Beatles wrote a song about her! So mea culpa (or would that be Mia culpa?), this episode does focus heavily on someone other than Pamela's career and her famous parents. After all this is a podcast where a child of a celebrity interviews a child of a celebrity. But when you can finally talk to someone who knew your sibling when they were in elementary school, I hope you can forgive us for indulging a bit. Part therapy session, part remembrance and part fascinating foray into the San Francisco 49ers, RADA, moldy Chanel couture garments, Caesar's Palace and Morgan Freeman, this episode of the podcast was a real thrill. Everyone has a story.
Mark and David Cross (itsMeDavidCross on X) discuss the 1978 creature feature Piranha. Directed by Joe Dante, and starring Bradford Dillman, Heather Menzies, Dick Miller, and a bunch of hungry fish, the Roger Corman produced film is one of the best Jaws knock-offs ever made. In this episode, they also talk about the inspired special effects, Joe Dante's filmography, and where it stands amongst all the other Jaws knock-offs that were made in the 1970s and 1980s. The sixth and finale film in our Stranger Than Fiction cycle is Richard Brooks' true crime magnum opus, In Cold Blood (1967). Often overlooked by the infamy of its origin source, In Cold Blood enormous value as a film: the beautiful and stark cinematography of Conrad Hall (who went on to shoot Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Road to Perdition), the unsettling and rapturous performances of leads Robert Blake and Scott Wilson, the surgical plotting and execution of Richard Brooks. It sits snugly inbetween the post-war studio system and the auteur anarchism of the 1970s. Despite these creative high marks, In Cold Blood could be a thesis statement for this cycle: exploitation and true life film are inseparable. The moral weight of retelling this grisly murder of a family by two drifters is too much for the film, even with its progressive anti-death penalty ideology. But we find interest and discourse in the cracks and fissures of great art. Perfection in film would be a negation of the medium. For our chaser film, we trace the lineage of true crime back to Compulsion (1959), a mess of a film that is salvaged by wonderful performances from Orson Welles, Diane Varsi, Dean Stockwell, and the truly creepy Bradford Dillman.
Leaving a mediocre-to-bad erotic thriller behind them, Andrew and Dave turn their attention to Compulsion, the 1959 drama inspired by the Leopold and Loeb murder murder case and starring Bradford Dillman, Dean Stockwell, Diane Varsi, Martin Milner, and Orson Welles! Just how closely does the film stick to the true life events (even when it is changing all the names)? Welles shows up how late in the film? And just how did director Richard Fleischer get from this to making Red Sonja and Conan the Destroyer? Tune in and find out!Next Episode: The most controversial Batman film you've never heard of!All music by Andrew Kannegiesser. Editing by Dave Babbitt

Tread Perilously's month of Patron requests continues with its first ever episode of Murder, She Wrote -- "Death Takes A Dive." When Harry McGraw (special guest Jerry Orbach) invites Jessica Fletcher to see the prizefighter he "inherited" from someone who owed him $5,000, she finds herself involved in the complex and often corrupt world of professional boxing. And when a hilariously crooked promoter (played by special guest star Adam West) turns up dead, Harry becomes the prime suspect; leaving Jessica to manage the prizefighter. Will she be able to exonerate Harry, get her boxer a fair fight, and solve half the problems in Boston before the count of ten? Erik and Justin marvel over the list of guest stars -- Jerry Orbach! Adam West! LeVar Burton! John Amos! Ernest Borgnine! Bradford Dillman! Erik credits YouTuber Pushing Up Roses for everything he knows about Murder, She Wrote. He also teases the next episode of the classic CBS series Tread Perilously will cover. Justin wonders why Ernest Borgnine is playing such a small part, but has no problem believing he could lay Adam West out flat. A Geography Corner breaks out when Justin and Erik try to figure out which L.A. City park is doubling for Boston. They also find the optics of Harry McGraw "inheriting" a boxer quite problematic and Erik accidentally invokes the Regan demon.
Bradford Dillman stars as Paul Grogan, a reclusive alcoholic living in a cabin out in the woods in an undisclosed part of the United States. He's visited by a skiptracer named Maggie McKeown (Heather Menzies), who is out to find a couple of backpackers who have disappeared without a trace. Their search leads them to an abandoned Army research facility solely inhabited by a strange scientist, Dr. Hoak (Kevin McCarthy). Hoak has been keeping up the research on "Operation Razorteeth," where mutant carnivorous piranha fish became bioweapons they can use to destroy the coldwater river systems of North Vietnam. The war ended, and the research stopped, but the scientist wouldn't abandon it. A mishap sees the piranha drained out into the nearby river, where they begin to wreak havoc on anyone unlucky enough to be in the water with them. Joe Dante directs this Roger Corman production from a script by John Sayles.

"Murder's nothing. It's just a simple experience. Murder and rape. Do you know what beauty there is in evil?" It's the start of our Richard D. Zanuck tribute series, ladies and gentlemen, and what better way to begin than with the first film he produced for his father, Darryl F. Zanuck, 1959's "Compulsion." Based on the book of the same name by Meyer Levin about the Leopold/Loeb murder from 1924, Richard D. Zanuck puts together a top notch team of cast and crew, headed up by director Richard Fleischer, to create a film that comes in under budget and ahead of schedule. It's a fascinating story about two young geniuses who are convinced they can commit the perfect crime and they do -- except one of them accidentally drops his glasses at the scene of the crime. The true story is horrifying, and it's equally so in this honest film depiction. With neither of us having seen this film before preparing for this episode, we stumbled upon a rare gem that deserves more viewers. We chat about the incredible cast headed up by Dean Stockwell and Bradford Dillman as the two murderers, Orson Welles as their lawyer, E.G. Marshall as the DA prosecuting them, Gavin MacLeod as his assistant, and Diane Varsi and Martin Milner as the friends caught up in the whole mess. We discuss Fleischer and what he brought to the table, along with William C. Mellor, the DP. We also discuss the interesting homosexual and sadomasochistic subtexts the film broaches, as well as rape and capital punishment, which for 1959 was a pretty big deal. It's an amazing film to stumble across and the perfect start for our Richard D. Zanuck tribute series. Check the movie out on Amazon and listen in!
