Pam Ross has created a style of music all her own. She blends her influences of rock, americana, and country into something fans are calling Pam Music. Pam was born in Pittsburgh, PA but lived most of her life in Houston, TX where she launched her music career. She first exposed the world to her originalsongs through open mic venues. After quickly gaining a reputation as an energic performer and soulful songwriter, Pam began touring throughout Texas.Pam later moved to Nashville and became recognized as one of the up-and-coming songwriters to watch. She performed numerous times at the renowned BlueBird Cafe and other local clubs in the Nashville area. Roger Sovine, then A&R president of BMI, took an interest in her career and began booking her inBMI showcases. Her lucky break came when she met with country songwriting legend and senior director of A&R at Mercury Records, Gary Harrison. He wasimpressed with Pam's songwriting and vocal power and offered her a record deal. While Gary may have been impressed with Pam's music, her americana style didn't really fit into country music. She was told they could change her musicto make it fit into the country genre of the day. Pam chose to decline the offer. She later said, “It would have been living a lie. I have a lot ofrespect for country music and changing who I am just to become famous wasn't the right thing to do. You have to be true to yourself and your music. Walkingaway was heartbreaking but ultimately the right thing to do at the time. Ironically, as time has passed and country music has changed, a lot of my songsnow fit into the genre and I would definitely accept a record deal in Nashville.” Pam moved to Fuquay Varina, NC in June of 2020 during the pandemic. In June 2022, she gathered up some incredible musicians and began recording ten songsat Goodluck Studio in Chapel Hill. Her album, When Therapy Fails, was released in November of 2022. The video for her first single, Fire In the Hole, has received multiple music video awards. In April, 2023 she signed on with MTS Artist Management, Promotions,& Records. Her fourth single, Falling Off the Merry Go Round, debuted at #18 on the UK iTunes / iChart and hit # 15 on the Mainstream Indie Chart. Beloware just a few of the reviews Pam has been receiving about her music.Iggy Magazine called her “…gifted…one of the most impressive artists we know.” Sarah Wagner of Earmilk wrote, “Ross' distinctive vocal style has often been compared to the likes of Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Etta James, giving hersongs an emotional depth and raw vulnerability that resonates with listeners.”"Music has the power to transcend time, resonate with our emotions, and spark conversations on pressing social issues. Few artists have the ability towield that power in a profound and impactful manner like Pam Ross.” Skope Magazine.www.pamrossmusic.com

For many families the Vietnam War remains unsettled. Nearly 1,600 Americans— and more than 300,000 Vietnamese—involved in the conflict are still unaccounted for. In What Remains: Bringing America's Missing Home from the Vietnam War (Harvard UP, 2019), Sarah E. Wagner tells the stories of America's missing service members and the families and communities that continue to search for them. From the scientists who work to identify the dead using bits of bone unearthed in Vietnamese jungles to the relatives who press government officials to find the remains of their loved ones, Wagner introduces us to the men and women who seek to bring the missing back home. Through their experiences she examines the ongoing toll of America's most fraught war. Every generation has known the uncertainties of war. Collective memorials, such as the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery, testify to the many service members who never return, their fates still unresolved. But advances in forensic science have provided new and powerful tools to identify the remains of the missing, often from the merest trace—a tooth or other fragment. These new techniques have enabled military experts to recover, repatriate, identify, and return the remains of lost service members. So promising are these scientific developments that they have raised the expectations of military families hoping to locate their missing. As Wagner shows, the possibility of such homecomings compels Americans to wrestle anew with their memories, as with the weight of their loved ones' sacrifices, and to reevaluate what it means to wage war and die on behalf of the nation. Sarah Wagner is Professor of Anthropology at the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences at George Washington University. Professor Wagner is a social anthropologist whose research explores loss through the lens of war, memory, prolonged mourning, and uncertain death. Studying forensic responses to missing persons, she has conducted ethnographic and archival research in Bosnia and Herzegovina and with the US military, including in Vietnam, in its attempts to account for the Missing In Action (MIA) from the past century's conflicts. Since 2020, she has focused on COVID-19 death and remembrance. Learn more about your ad choices.

In this episode Anne van Mourik and Dat Nguyen talk with Tam Ngo and Sarah Wagner on the remains of the war dead of the Vietnam-American War (1957-1975). Following the end of the war, the commemoration and identification of the fallen and missing-in-action soldiers from both the Vietnamese (North and South) and American sides remains a contentious issue. With Tam and Dat researching respectively the North- and South Vietnamese perspectives and Sarah the U.S. perspective, this episode approaches the topic from three different angles of the war. What is the contention about? How are the bones used for necro-political and necro-governmental agendas over time?

My guest is Sarah Wagner, co-author of the brilliant book, https://amzn.to/3z89uis (Unleash Today), which I highly recommend. Sarah's a project manager based in Beijing, where she enhances relations between her home country, Germany, and China. Sarah earned her LLM in International Law in the Netherlands. That's also where she met her co-author, Kate Surala. Sarah's an amazing powerhouse who served as the Senior Policy Manager for the largest Tech Trade Association in Brussels, Belgium. She also worked in Washington, DC as the Head Delegate of the G20 Summit for Young Professionals in Sydney, Australia. Her podcast, https://www.here-she-is.com/ (Here She Is), features diverse leaders and inspires diversity! And although I won't share her age, she's young.
My guest on this episode, Kate Surala, joins me from across the pond in London. She's traveled around the world and lived in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Now, she's a Partner, C.O.O., and Head of Compliance and Legal at The Analyst Research, L.L.P. Kate was also a leader of the legal and compliance research team after studying law and finance at University of Oxford. Attending Oxford was a goal since she was a young girl watching her social-worker mom represent children in court. Recently, Kate published a book, “Unleash Today,” with co-author Sarah Wagner. They developed it after finding that existing business self-help books were written by successful women who were twenty years their seniors. The one-of-a kind modern-day self-help and mentoring book was created for young, ambitious, and progressive women leaving universities and entering the workplace, much like Kate and Sarah. Their goal is to share the lessons they've learned so other ambitious women don't have to go through what they did. Order the book at our website!

This is a really special episode because it’s the first international episode of Women Talk Shop! Today, I’m talking with Kate Surala and Sarah Wagner, the co-authors of a new book called Unleash Today, a non-fiction book that empowers young women to unleash their full potential in the workplace. Today we’re talking about the little things that add up to make a huge, negative impact on our self-esteem in the workplace. Women tend to overcompensate for our relative inexperience as professionals by working doubly hard and thinking we need to do more, be more, and take on more than men in order to prove ourselves. And, when we aren’t PERFECT at work, or we don’t perform PERFECTLY every day, we shame ourselves and minimize the good work we have done, and all the things we are capable of, as forms of punishment that prove our low self-esteem justifiable. In other words, we look for confirmation bias that we’re not good enough yet, so we need to work harder. This is a pretty thick conversation that ultimately relays back to the importance of self-promotion so sit back and enjoy the conversation with Kate and Sarah, and please share this episode with a friend who you think is way more impressive than she gives herself credit for. Let’s talk to Sarah and Kate.

Imagine you are joining a new workplace. You are likely to be nervous and tense and have a million questions in your head: ‘What time should I arrive?’, ‘What should I wear?’ and ‘Should I reply to every email with “Dear Mike” or get straight to the point?’ You might not be able to follow internal jokes or grasp work routines immediately. You are not the only one with these questions and uncertainties in your head. Everyone goes through this when they join a new working environment and it takes on average ninety days to get accustomed to the new work routines. Sarah Wagner and Kate Surala have created a unique platform, Unleash Today to provide confidence, empowerment and lesson learned in leadership. Their work is based on their own experiences in climbing the corporate ladder. Our conversation provides action items and inspiration for you as a leader and how to help the next generation as well. Pre-order their book on unleashtoday.com and get ready for a great conversation!
Facebook took down a Trump campaign ad that tried to scare grandma about “Dangerous Mobs of far-left groups”. That could be us he’s talking about… more or less minus returning guest Sarah Wagner (she’s Libertarian, so she occupies her own space). We celebrate what the Dangerous Mobs did with Confederate statues on the Capitol grounds this weekend (we’re including the Governor in that, as he ordered more monuments removed). Gary did a little tour of those monuments back in TTS 58.And we celebrate the SCOTUS decision on LGBTQ and Title 7. Another happy thought surrounds the legislature unanimously passing a pair of bills, the Second Chance Act and the First Step Act, allowing judges more latitude in sentencing and expunging the record of some types of criminal offenders. Jen and Gary round out the talk-a-thon discussing how Jeffery Billman was fired as the editor at Indy-Week even though he apologized for missing an important story of sexual harassment at a Raleigh restaurant. Jen knows a little more about the story that was reported in the N&O and Indy-Week.And we sort of rate our Skype (or Zoom) rooms. Jen is generous with Gary. Gary doesn’t really return the favor.MORE LINKS:This episode’s video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/0stmXP0zAMIThe TTS Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TriangleTalkShow/The TTS Web Site: https://TriangleTalkShow.com
