“Shout out poison control!” That's right! Apparently, the only time Andie and Angie have called poison control is when their middle children ate/drank something they weren't supposed to. You definitely want to listen to this hilarious episode of Mother Funny when Andie and Angie continue talking about middle children. Yes, this episode is longer than most of their other episodes, but that's because middle children deserve the extra time and attention. Have you ever noticed people say line up oldest to youngest? Or line up youngest to oldest. Why don't middle children ever get the opportunity to line up first? There are times when middle children feel overlooked, but Andie and Angie try their best to honor, highlight, and celebrate middle children. This episode is filled with practical tips and tricks for raising middle kids. The truth is, a lot of moms are more relaxed when they parent their second child. They don't seem to be as strict as they were with their oldest since they are simply trying to control the chaos. While you're managing three (or more) kids make sure to give your middle children the time and space to share their feelings and emotions. Thankfully, they can be open and free since they don't have the pressure to be perfect like the oldest child does. It's time to watch your middle children shine! So, whether you're a middle child, a parent of one, or simply curious about this magnificent middle child world, join Andie and Angie in this very relatable episode bursting with laughter and love!Stay tuned after the episode for a special outtake six years in the making!
“Being a middle child is a badge of honor.” Did you know there's a National Middle Child Day? Yep, there sure is! Join Andie and Angie as they talk about the very creative middle children of the family. Don't worry, they didn't forget about them. They actually spend extra time discussing the peacekeepers of the family. At times middle children might feel lost in the shuffle, but in this Mother Funny episode, Andie and Angie highlight a few of their positive characteristics. They want to celebrate the empathetic, social, independent, resilient, funny, and diplomatic members of the family. Andie has one middle child in her family who has the amazing ability to create a tribe wherever he goes. Angie has three middle children who love to live in each other's play world. So bring on the Legos or Magnatiles because middle children are so creative they don't ever get bored. This episode is filled with heartwarming stories with a touch of humor because middle children are a true delight!

I was introduced to Jennifer Ives through a mutual colleague, Sejal Amin. Sejal is one of the growing alumni of the Real Technologist podcast. Sagel and I were discussing how to move the needle from mentoring to refocusing on sponsoring others. What's the difference? Mentoring is often talking, teaching and strategizing. Sponsoring means taking steps to make opportunities. Sponsoring means investing in someone and truly advocating for them. In this context, Sejal talked about the value she personally gets from being part of an industry organization called Chief. Chief was founded to drive women forward into positions of power and to keep them there. Another Real Technologist alumni, Shannon Leitz also shared with me how important Chief was to her. Jennifer Ives is a founding member of Chief which now boasts over 20,000 experienced, diverse and influential executive women. I'm not a shy person, nor am I someone who is easily intimidated. That said, when Jennifer rapidly responded that she would love to be a guest, I started to wonder what sort of powerful or possibly intimidating presence I would encounter.I always do a light amount of research putting a time box around the effort bob or I put into our detective work. We scheduled the recording and sent the invite. I dialed in one minute before the meeting was set to start only to find that Bob and Jennifer were already online and deep in conversation. As it turns out, Jennifer had done her own detective work to find out more about me, and in the process, had learned about "the Ops to my Dev", that is Bob. I listened for a moment to a delightful conversation that I can only describe as Jennifer interviewing Bob. What I encountered embodied in this life force known as Jennifer Ives is something unique and insightful. She is simply lovely in every dimension. Visually, she was wearing gentle lace on a modest blouse and an absolutely glowing smile. She positions her camera so she's looking directly at you, and as we all know from our lockdown days, that can be pretty tough to do... you know, positioning a camera so it's pointed at you straight on as opposed to looking downward at it.I noticed Jennifer make constant eye contact, nothing distracted her. She didn't reach for a phone to turn off the ringer and no messages popped up on her screen taking her eyes away from me. Jennifer is instantly warming. When she speaks, you immediately sense how smart she is. There is a natural sense of trustworthiness.I can see why C-Suite executive women and those like me, who drive change want to engage with her. She's authentic. When I found out that she's a geospatial engineer who worked with super secret government agencies, I was hooked. Our 60 minute conversations stretched into nearly an hour and a half. We are both passionate about humans and about technologies. We both believe that the best solutions are those that have a wide range of diverse thinkers involved. We both seem to position ourselves between diverse positions, ever negotiating. It turns out we are both middle children. Middle children are considered the "stealth leaders" of the birth order pack, according to Katrin Schumann, author of The Secret Power of Middle Children. Jennifer has all the telltale signs: she's a negotiator, a consensus builder, a risk taker, and an innovator.

“We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.” Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/donavon-riley/support

This is the 2nd in a series looking at how birth order affects our sons. You’ve probably heard the term, “Middle Child Syndrome”, and if you have a middle child you will probably agree that this can be a complex position in the family. I began studying birth order to better understand my own middle son, and what I learned helped our family so much. After sharing what I learned on my blog, I heard from a lot of families who were encouraged by what they read! In today’s episode, I share that blog post and a short interview with my middle son. No one can save you except for you. In this episode, Jessie Jolles and I talk about being the hero of our own story, disordered eating, and Jessie reveals her childhood trademark. Jessie Jolles is a writer/comedian living in Queens, New York. She’s worked for over 2 years as a writer/director for Betches Media where her videos have millions of views. She’s also written standup for personalities like Taylor Strecker (The Taylor Strecker Show) and Stassi Schroeder (Vanderpump Rules). She was 1 of 100 creators from around the world selected for YouTube's “Women in Comedy” Production Program. You can hear her on her podcast No Such Thing As Love with Claire Burns and her new podcast with Chris Burns (aka Fat Carrie Bradshaw) called Middle Children. Jessie and I open the show about our shared terrible experience with toxic power. We were both babies! It's a miracle we didn't quit the comedy business back then. Plus, an article came out validating that something was wrong with the CEO. Jessie learned that she needed to make money separately, so she didn't make creative decisions based on money. Everything suffers if you make decisions based on money. Jessie dives deep into her childhood. Being an overweight kid really shapes everything. Jessie did not let her parents control her eating habits. After summer camp, Jessie's dad said she was unrecognizable because she had gained so much weight. In high school, Jessie thought the key to success was losing weight. Summer camp was a buffet, Jessie felt like she could finally eat because her parents weren't around. Jessie had a rolling backpack in high school – it was her trademark. However, it seriously made her a target for bullies. We talk about dyslexia and being the "special" class growing up. Jessie's mom always knew she was smart, she just learned differently. Instead of cheating, Jessie would cram, make up a song, and learn it. Presentations in high school were also fantastic – she considered it like a performance. Jessie would trick people into doing work for her in college. Dr. Catherine Salmon is a Full Professor in the psychology department at the University of Redlands. She is the co-author (with Donald Symons) of Warrior Lovers: Erotic fiction, evolution and female sexuality. She has written chapters in numerous books including Buss' Handbook of Evolutionary Psychology and The Literary Animal. She is also a co-editor of the books Evolutionary Psychology: Public Policy and Personal Decisions (with Charles Crawford) Family Psychology: An Evolutionary Perspective and the Oxford Handbook of Evolutionary Family Psychology (both with Todd Shackelford), and co-author with Katrin Schuman of The Secret Power of Middle Children. Her primary research interests include birth order and the family, reproductive suppression and dieting behavior, and female sexuality, particularly with regard to prostitution and pornography. Her interest in pop culture also led to co-authoring a chapter on female wrestling fans and their fantasies in Steel Chair to the Head: The Pleasure and Pain of Professional Wrestling. In this episode, we cover several different topics of Dr. Salmon's work. We first talk about birth order, parental investment and sibling conflict, and also how there might be parent-offspring conflict over mates. We also refer to evolutionary approaches to dieting behavior and anorexia in women. And then we get into topics of popular culture and consumer behavior, like pornography, romance novels, and slash fiction. Episode 5: It's time for another solo episode! For those who listened to Diary of 2 Middle Children (episodes 4, part 1 and part 2), you may remember that Sania and I talked about the myth of the linear path briefly. What is the linear path? "The Linear Path is a worldview in which mastering perfectionism, progress and ever-exceeding improvement lead to success, security and happiness." - Daniëlle van de Kemenade⠀ Many of us have been brought up with this idea. For me, I believed that if I followed all the steps "correctly", (went to school, got good grades, got a job, got married, etc.) then I would find happiness and success. I believed that life proceeds in an orderly, linear fashion and I just need to find the magic formula and follow it to find success...and perhaps more importantly, avoid failure. But in reality, this idea is a myth. Careers are progressively more and more non-linear and happiness is not a final destination that we reach once we've surpassed enough milestones. Have you ever felt that every time you reached a milestone, instead of celebrating it, you lamented that you hadn't reached the next milestone yet? That used to be me.⠀ A few years ago, I realized that that 1) the linear path is a myth, success and happiness is not a straight line but a squiggly one that goes in every which direction, 2) there is no such thing as doing things "right", everyone follows a different path and what works for one person, doesn't work for another person, 3) every step we take is just a data point in our journey which will help us to make future decisions and learn from our failures and mistakes, it's not the end of the world and 4) no matter what you do, there is no way to avoid the risk of failure, making a mistake or defeat. What's important is to be in the arena: striving, risking and daring greatly. Brené Brown talks more about being in the arena in her book Daring Greatly.
Episode 4, Part 2: Have you ever gotten caught up in what concepts like "good", "honour" and "respect" mean? We have and what's been most puzzling is that it seems like everyone knows but us! Today's episode is Part 2 of Diary of 2 Middle Children where Sania and I pick up our conversation from last week and talk about being judged, pivotal moments in our life that changed how we view ourselves, giving ourselves permission to make our own choices, people-pleasing and our tendency to think that at some point, things would make sense. Spoiler alert: this never happens! We talk about loving and accepting who we are and what it means to be a good person. Further, how do we instill good values in our kids? We conclude with a question to the audience: are we just the sum of our actions or is there inherent goodness in all of us? Lastly, there's a call to action, if anything in this episode resonated with you, please comment on Istagram, Facebook, or send me an email at thisisyoupodcast@gmail.com, I'd love to hear from you.

Episode 4, Part 1: Does birth order influence our personalities? Both my guest, Sania Khan, and I are middle children and feel that being a middle child plays a fundamental role in how we experience and view the world. In this episode, we discuss middle child syndrome and how being a middle child has led to certain tendencies such as people pleasing, wanting to be peacemakers, feeling neglected and trying to figure out our role in our families. In particular, I think I equated being a middle child with being less loved or less worthy and it took me a long time to realize that that wasn't the case. But where did this feeling come from to begin with? Listen in to this episode to learn where some of these ideas came from, how they were perpetuated and how I began to see things differently as I became a parent. People pleasing is another aspect of our personalities that can affect so many of our everyday choices, how do you break free of the desire to please everyone else and live life on your own terms? Sania and I discuss our journey and what we still struggle with today. We also tackle topics such as why the process of arranged marriage can be difficult as a middle child, choosing a different path from the ones our siblings paved for us, embracing ourselves with self-love, and how it influences us going forward. This is part one of a really funny, insightful and interesting conversation. You won't want to miss this one!

Meanwhile Amy tackles the topics of which type of exercise is best for mood (seeking confirmatory bias for yoga), the depressing research on what playing with Barbie does to girls career aspirations, why theory of mind and dancing are linked, why is it good to swear when socially excluded, and finishes with a discussion on disorders named after cities.
