What is the cost of speaking out against Christian nationalism? In this episode, Amanda Tyler talks with Rob Reiner and Dan Partland, two people behind a new film that discusses the dangers of Christian nationalism to the country, to the faith, and to pluralism. They share candidly about what they learned while making “God & Country,” the cost for Christians who are speaking out against the political ideology, and what new conversations they are hoping to create with this film. SHOW NOTESSegment 1 (starting at 00:35): Rob Reiner and Dan Partland on Christian nationalism “God & Country” will be in theaters on February 16. Learn more at GodAndCountryTheMovie.com. The phrase “separation of church and state” is not in the U.S. Constitution, but the concept is laid out several times, including Article VI's prohibition on any religious test for office, the First Amendment's prohibition of a government establishment of religion, and the First Amendment's guarantee of the free exercise of religion. Read more in Brent Walker's “Top 5 Myths of the Separation of Church and State.” Learn more about the Christians Against Christian Nationalism campaign – a project BJC began in 2019 – by visiting ChristiansAgainstChristianNationalism.org. Segment 2 (starting at 20:58): Post-screening Q&A with Partland and Reiner BJC and the Freedom From Religion Foundation released a comprehensive report on the role of Christian nationalism in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. You can access it here. Dan Partland mentioned The Power Worshippers, a book by Katherine Stewart on the rise of religious nationalism. It serves as a basis for the movie. Segment 3 (starting at 41:18): Closing Michelle Boorstein covered the screening for The Washington Post in this article: ‘God & Country' film spotlights Christian nationalism's threat to democracy Respecting Religion is made possible by BJC's generous donors. Thirty years ago today, President Bill Clinton signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) into law. It was a monumental event in religious liberty law at the time, and it remains part of an even more complex legal landscape of religious exemptions today. Amanda Tyler and Holly Hollman look at the standard set by RFRA and discuss how the law has been used in cases dealing with issues ranging from sacramental drug use to application of health insurance regulations. They discuss the non-controversial applications of RFRA, too, and the search for win-win solutions to complicated situations that arise in a religiously pluralistic society. SHOW NOTES Segment 1 (starting at 00:38): The need for and passage of RFRA Learn more about the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) on BJC's website: BJConline.org/RFRA Holly wrote a column on RFRA for Word&Way's “A Public Witness” newsletter, and you can read it here: Revisiting RFRA 30 years later Read the text of the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act at this link. Amanda mentioned these two “high water mark” cases in the period before 1990: Sherbert v. Verner (1963) and Wisconsin v. Yoder (1972). The 1990 Employment Division v. Smith is the case often known as the “peyote case.” We played audio from Justice Antonin Scalia reading the opinion of the Court from the bench, which you can listen to and read at this link. Watch the signing ceremony for RFRA on November 16, 1993, at this link on the YouTube channel of the William J. Clinton Presidential Library. Holly mentioned this printed resource available on our website, produced for the 20th anniversary of RFRA. Segment 2 (starting at 14:16): Twists and turns of RFRA over 30 years Amanda mentioned the 1997 case that struck down RFRA as applied to the states: City of Boerne v. Flores. The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA) has the same standard as RFRA, but it has not been the subject of so many controversies. Holly and Amanda mentioned three other RFRA cases: Gonzales v. O Centro Espírita Beneficente União do Vegetal in 2006 (also known as the “UDV” case), Tanzin v. Tanvir in 2020, and Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores in 2014. Holly wrote about the application of RFRA to corporations in light of the Hobby Lobby decision in 2014: Examining RFRA in light of Hobby Lobby J. Buy Kevin Richberg's New Batch of Honey! Amanda Tyler is executive director of BJC (Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty), leading the organization as it upholds the historic Baptist principle of religious liberty: defending the free exercise of religion and protecting against its establishment by government. She is the lead organizer of BJC's Christians Against Christian Nationalism campaign and co-host of BJC's Respecting Religion podcast. Tyler's constitutional law analysis and advocacy for faith freedom for all have been featured by major news outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, CBS News, ABC News, CNN, and MSNBC. Religion News Service named Tyler one of “2022's rising stars in religion,” and she regularly preaches in Baptist churches, speaks at denominational gatherings, and leads sessions on college campuses and with community groups of all sizes. A member of the Texas and U.S. Supreme Court Bar, Tyler has experience working in Congress, in a private legal practice, and serving as a law clerk for a federal judge. She testified before Congress in 2022 about the ways in which Christian nationalism proves cover for white supremacy and in 2018 about threats to religious liberty around the world. Originally from Austin, Texas, Tyler grew up hearing about the cherished Baptist principles of religious liberty and the separation of church and state as a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. Because she was committed to these principles, Tyler sought out BJC when she moved to Washington to attend Georgetown University, and she began volunteering in the office. Tyler graduated from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University with a bachelor's degree in foreign service, magna cum laude. She was hired by BJC to serve as assistant to the general counsel, working closely with Brent Walker, James Dunn, Melissa Rogers and Holly Hollman. During this time, she wrote columns for Report from the Capital, drafted statements on religious liberty issues, presented educational programs, and coordinated the broad coalition in support of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act. Tyler left BJC to enroll in The University of Texas School of Law, where she received her J.D. with honors. In 2019, the school named her their “Outstanding Young Alumna.” Following law school, Tyler worked in private practice and served as a law clerk for a U.S. district court judge in Dallas, Texas. She later joined the staff of U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett in Austin and Washington, D.C. In Austin, Tyler served as the congressman's district director, leading the staff in the development and execution of an outreach agenda for a 7-county congressional district, as well as serving as a spokesperson for his office. She later served as Rep. Doggett's counsel for the Ways and Means Committee. Tyler was named executive director of BJC in 2016, and she began her tenure in January 2017. She lives in Dallas with her husband, Robert Behrendt, and their son. You can follow her on X: @AmandaTylerBJC. Learn more about Amanda in her BJC staff Q&A. On February 2, we'll see the 71st installment of an event that always raises eyebrows and makes news. The National Prayer Breakfast has been around since 1953, but what is it? Does it promote religious freedom, or is it yet another example of Christian nationalism? Amanda and Holly explore the legitimate questions it raises about faith in public life and the relationship between the institutions of government and religion. They also share their thoughts on what we should do about the National Prayer Breakfast and the key differences between it and the National Day of Prayer. Join Ben (https://gideonasen.com/our-team/benjamin-gideon/) and Rahul (https://www.psbr.law/ravipudi.html) for their conversation with renowned Dallas, Texas trial lawyer, Brent Walker, one half of the firm Aldous & Walker. Brent talks about growing up with a trial lawyer mother and his journey to partner with legendary Texas trial lawyer Charla Aldous. Brent discusses how the two of them have built a firm focused on individual clients and taking on important causes, like Texas' challenge to school mask mandates and sexual assault at a Jesuit school. Brent describes how he and Charla have teamed up at trial to achieve an incredible string of verdicts in a diverse set of cases. This is a great episode that you won't want to miss. About Brent Walker Sharp. Protective. Trial Attorney. Some attorneys focus on different areas of law, building a practice around specific kinds of cases and concentrating on them. But I don't work like that. Instead, I try all kinds of cases. My job as a Dallas trial attorney is to go into court and stand up for my clients, whether the client is a person with a personal injury case or a corporation locked in a legal battle with another business. Whatever your case, I can plead your cause in court. The experience of representing individuals and businesses as both plaintiffs and defendants gives me a unique perspective and helps me better serve clients of the firm. At the same time, my extensive appellate experience allows me to work on cases before and during trial with an eye toward possible issues in the event of an appeal. Courtroom Experience Before coming to work with Charla and the team at Aldous Walker—then Aldous Walker—I worked at one of Dallas' leading healthcare law firms, as well as one of the nation's leading personal injury firms. Over the years, I've gained significant experience in personal injury cases involving catastrophic injuries and wrongful death, as well as commercial litigation claims involving breach of contract and misappropriation of trade secrets. But the most important thing to remember is not that I've tried this kind of case or that, but that I have, in fact, taken them to trial. I've stood up in court, argued cases to judges and juries, and persuaded them to my clients' point of view. In an age where some young attorneys never even see the inside of a courtroom, that makes me rather unique.
Let's make this perfectly clear, there's a whole lot of conversation about male genitalia in this episode. The four of us, plus our #1 listener Brent Walker, have reached a point in our lives where the vasectomy conversation has become about as common as talking about the latest devastating Toronto (enter team here) loss. Some have had the procedure already and felt it was extremely important to share their experience so others looking into the procedure will have a better understanding of what they're in for.

I met Wali, a 32-year-old teacher, while he was visiting a friend in New Orleans following a breakup with his girlfriend and his second hospitalization for bipolar disorder. We stayed in touch and when he returned a few months later, he agreed to share his story with me. This interview took place on August 17th, 2019, a few days prior to Wali's new podcast going live. It's called the 730 Podcast. It explores how mental health issues intersect with the African American experience. Have a listen. Welcome to The Hidden South, a collection of intimate conversations with people throughout the Southeast U.S. My name is Brent Walker. This is the first of what I hope to be many episodes of The Hidden South. Since this is the first episode, let me tell you a little about my project. I've been a photographer for many years. In 2014 I began hitting the streets of Atlanta's most impoverished neighborhoods and asking people to tell me a story about something that changed their lives. After we were finished talking, I'd take their picture and post their story and photo online. In 2015, after a harrowing Kickstarter campaign, I took a trip around the Southeast U.S. and created my first book, The Hidden South - Come Home, which largely focuses on addiction in the South. Since the book has come out, I've delved into other areas of interest. For the last year and a half, I've focused on Mental health in the U.S. and have a book completed that has not yet been released about that subject. Now I'm in New Orleans and am gathering a collection of stories and portraits of people who have a meaningful connection to this very important place. The episode that you're about to listen to touches on all three, addiction, mental health, and New Orleans. I've known David in passing for a few years. He was a barista at a coffee shop I often went to on Lower Decatur in the French Quarter. He was also roommates with a friend of mine, Corey, who died from a fentanyl overdose last year. I met David in the Marigny, a vibrant, beautiful neighborhood just outside the French Quarter. The children that you'll hear in the background were selling cookies and lemonade close by. A side note: I did not anticipate this being my first podcast episode so I wasn't worried about the noise around us and I recorded directly onto my phone. In other words, the quality of the audio isn't great. Expect modestly better in the future. On this week's NOLA Matters, we speak with Brent Walker, whose book ’The Hidden South’ tells 100 stories of real people whom Brent meets in his travels through the South. These are real stories of real people that document real pain - his book, complete with portraits of his subject, is an unapologetic look at the cumulative effects of poverty. In Episode 37 of the Commentary Track, Frank Thompson talks with Brent Walker.
Casey Albertson and Brent Walker of PatientBond talk with Scott McGohan about the power of psychographics to increase engagement and change behavior. Psychographics pertains to people’s values, lifestyles, attitudes and personality. It’s the “why,” the deep-seated motivations, behind our behavior. When you know what motivates people, you can target your communications in a way that is more likely to resonate with them. When applied to health care, that means people are more likely to get healthy or stay healthy and engaged. It's a fascinating, proven strategy that has been successful for decades in the consumer product market, and is now starting to have on impact on health care as well. Learn how a simple quiz is 91 percent accurate at identifying what motivates individuals, and what this means to employers.
Brent says, "I have always been very fond of writing and have written a lot of short stories in the past (I even wrote a screenplay once). but none of them have ever been published. For me it is very simple. I want to help people. I don't care about money; I never really have. "Most of my life, I have been haunted by this disease. For twenty years at least I have had the weight of this on my shoulders. For the most part, I did not talk about it much in those 20 years as I didn't want people to pity me or treat me differently. When I finally decided I was going to go through with it and get tested, I decided to open up more about it to friends and coworkers, and what I found was that my story was not met with pity but that it in fact seemed to inspire people. So perhaps by sharing my story, I could do just that if I wrote about it. "I would say about 90 percent of 'Look Up' is based on my own experience. I go to Vegas with friends every March, have for about seven years, and I take that time to reflect on my life and think about where I am. The idea for this story has been in my brain for years, but I only recently decided to put it on paper and share it." In this interview, Brent talks about his story, his life with HD, genetic testing, and survivor's guilt. We also provide information on where to go for help if you or a loved one is considering suicide. Note: The story includes adult situations and profanity. Brent Walker watched Huntington's disease tear his family apart, although they didn't know at first that it was Huntington's disease. About 20 years ago, he became familiar with Huntington's disease and realized his father was at risk. He later found out that his father was HD positive, putting himself and his two siblings at risk. His journey compelled him to write a gripping short story, "Look Up," which will be published in three installments in The Huntington's Post. Brent is a talented writer, and we look forward to hearing more about his journey and his story during this interview. To read the story, please go to http://help4hd.org/the-huntingtons-post/.
