Guest preacher, Rev. Bruce Reyes-Chow, speaks to our community about the importance of both individual and communal discernment in the midst of our political realities. While he acknowledges that elections are an activity of empire, he challenges us to engage power in such a way that upholds the belovedness of all people, even those we might consider our enemies. How might we prevent evil from "winnning," by choosing to overcome evil with good?

We speak with Bruce Reyes-Chow about his recent book Everything Good about God Is True, a primer on what it means to choose faith in the midst of a bleeding world and an often broken church. We discuss the Christian ethic of loving enemies, listening, having compassion across ideological division, embodying faith in the public square, biblical literalism, Christian formation, soteriological exclusivism, the eucharist, missions and colonialism, and that time Bruce hung out with Desmond Tutu. You might notice we're experimenting with some new formatting in this episode. In his sermon “Choosing to Follow What is Good,” Bruce reminds us of the grand gift of relationship we have as communal beings who believe that this faithful journey we have accepted in Christ is good or better than what we have experienced before. He reminds us that God's goodness is not limited, but more often than not, we respond to hate with more hate. How do we move through the world the way Jesus has called us to and not how evil has persuaded us to harm the other? How will we choose to step into community and engage with the brokenness around us with compassion?

We do the same when thinking about God, saying God isn't cruel or God isn't this, or that etc. But this thinking doesn't actually help give us clarity on who we actually are or who God is. For episode homepage, resources and links, visit: https://kristenmanieri.com/episode131/   Description When we’re not really thinking about it, we might define kindness as being nice, polite and agreeable. But Bruce Reyes-Chow, author of In Defense of Kindness: Why It Matters, How It Changes Our Lives, and How It Can Save the World, looks a few layers deeper. To Bruce, kindness is a decision to use every interaction as an opportunity build up the people in our lives. Kindness takes courage, practice and, at times, herculean restraint, but it’s our pathway to healing, wholeness, and hope in ourselves and the world. It’s an adventure of discovery and rediscovery of kindness of heart, mind, spirit, and action.   Guest Bio Bruce Reyes-Chow is a kindness enthusiast. A Presbyterian pastor, leadership coach, spouse of 30 years, and parent to three children, he has spent the past 25 years working with individuals and organizations helping them to work through conflict and change having to do with technology, race, relationships, religion, leadership, and change. He has seen most breakthroughs when kindness—the ability to see the humanity of the other and then behave in a way that honors that belief—is embraced, embodied, and expressed by all involved. Author of and contributor to books such as, But I Don’t See You as Asian: Curating Conversations About Race, Rule #2: Don’t Be an Asshat: An Official Handbook for Raising Parents and Children, and 40 Days, 40 Prayers, 40 Words: Lenten Reflections for Everyday Life, he now takes on what seems a most daunting task in today’s world of so much physical violence, dehumanizing rhetoric, and divisive rage-tweeting—the defense of kindness.   Host Bio Kristen Manieri is certified both as a habits coach and mindfulness teacher. She specializes in: stress reduction, energy management, mindset, resilience, focus, habit formation, rest rituals, and prioritizing personal well-being. As the host of the weekly 60 Mindful Minutes podcast, an Apple top 100 social science podcast, Kristen has interviewed over 120 authors and thought leaders about what it means to live a more conscious, connected, intentional AND joyful life. On this "extra long” segment of Did you know… Sunni and Lisa attempt (albeit unsuccessful) to unpack the lunacy of folks and their absolute blind ambition to succeed at becoming lower than a snake's belly!  The ladies discuss a number of atrocities committed against children in the Black Community. Curious: 1) the 6 year old kid who was arrested and made to appear in court for picking a fcuking tulip! 2) the 5 year old kid whose teacher made him pull toilet paper and feces from the toilet and 3) the “headmaster” who made the 11 year old kneel and apologize!  The common denominator, wait for it - white adults and black children! Just know that Sunni loses her chit discussing these atrocities… you've been warned.  The ladies also discuss the violent events that are happening in the Asian Community.  Understand that the show's hosts stand in solidarity and hold space for underrepresented communities.  It's going to take people from every culture and background to make that hate machine disappear for all eternity! On this episode of Active Allyship…it's more than a #hashtag! Sunni and Lisa talk to  Bruce Reyes-Chow, author of “In Defense of Kindness…”. What an amazing human- being!  *singing* “It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood…” Seriously!  The ladies were wondering where he was with the book during the 2019 Presidential campaign…it was most definitely needed! The context, the layout, the calls to action after each chapter… Yesssssss!  When Bruce shares what he was marinated in, you can immediately make the connection to his life's journey and the book.  Insightful!  Wait, he's a comedian too, he is hilarious!  Admittedly, one of the hosts stated that she didn't want to read the book because she thought it was going to be too mushy and airy fairy.  Yea, no… what a totally different experience.  Of course you'll have to listen to know who said what…but you can take a guess! When you think of ways to show kindness, the ladies would be willing to bet “a dime to a dollar” that you wouldn't think of Saviorism or Privilege or Resistance or Competition or Institutional Change!  These discussions and so much more!  You will not regret listening to this episode (or any of them really).  O wait, it's extra long so, take a really long walk or drive or prepare dinner or shucks, do nothing… but listen! If you aren't already, please follow us on IG @activeallyship.podcast!
