Emily Calandrelli, a West Virginia University and MIT educated engineer known for her education shows like “Xploration Outer Space” and “Emily's Wonder Lab,” has released a video sharing everything that happened on her flight from Blue Origin's West Texas spaceport. The 16-minute video, which can be watched on Calandrelli's YouTube page, includes details from her astronaut training, some of the unique things she did to make the flight special for herself, women, kids and West Virginia, and her full reaction to experiencing weightlessness and seeing Earth from space. Calandrelli also raised more than $30,000 for West Virginia foster youth via a fundraiser involving a flash drive she carried into space loaded with nearly 10,000 hopes and dreams of West Virginia children. The fair provides opportunities for students to ask questions about their world and discover how the world works. It also allows students to be creative and resourceful as they contemplate problems to solve in the real world. It also acts as an entry point for West Virginia high school students to qualify for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. Located just outside of Thurmond, the Dun Glen Hotel was infamous in the early 1900s. The New River Gorge Convention and Visitor's Bureau describes it as an “upscale den of sin” where “alcohol flowed freely and gambling was the pastime of choice.” The hotel bars stayed open 24/7, allowing for crazy parties and lengthy poker games—the longest ever being 14 years, according to Ripley's Believe it or Not and the Guinness Book of World Records. While the hotel is long gone, the land where it was housed is now controlled by the National Park Service. These “wars” started in central West Virginia in the 1910s and culminated with the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain, in which approximately 20,000 fought, in southern West Virginia. A collection of immigrants, Black Americans from the South, and other residents of the various hollows located around the state joined forces to stand up against the mine guard system. The town of Matewan, politically independent of coal companies, served as a focal point for union organizers during this period and witnessed the “Battle of Matewan,” in which Sheriff Sid Hatfield got into a wild-west shootout with mining security.
#larevistacr www.larevista.cr

Hosts Chris Blackerby and Charity Weeden of Astroscale welcomed MIT Engineer and Emmy-nominated science TV host Emily Calandrelli to the podcast. Calandrelli is a prominent member of the science communications ecosystem and shared her own story and insights on storytelling in science.Becoming an engineer wasn't a lifelong dream for Calandrelli —her drive was purely practical until discovering the technology and policy program in grad school at MIT. “It was looking at science and technology through a policy lens and asking about if it's ethical, the role of government, and keeping the public safe. I thought these were fascinating questions,” she said. That experience shifted her career to be more policy and communications driven. She intended to work in DC but got a call from a production company asking her if she wanted to host a TV show about space.Years later, she's a strong voice for the scientific community and advocates for people with all different talents to get involved in the space industry. “There are other ways to get involved in space outside of STEM,” she added. Those types of roles are now trying to spread scientific literary and combat misinformation. Calandrelli focuses her approach on the human side of the story. She explained, “Going to the real human emotions attached to the story matters. You can frame an argument based on what the audience cares about and find simple, creative ways to explain science.”Science is complex and uncertain, especially the coronavirus. In communicating a difficult and uncertain event, Calandrelli sees that science communication is challenging. “Everyone's learning how to communicate this uncertainty, but there's a lot of false information out there. It's important to learn from the right sources,” she said.

Emily Calandrelli, host of Xploration Outer Space and correspondent on Bill Nye Saves the World, thinks there aren't enough female science geeks in fiction. She wants to help change that with her Ada Lace series of children's books. “What I wanted to do was create a character that was female who had these types of adventures and did these types of science experiments,” Calandrelli says in Episode 318 of the Geek's Guide to the Galaxy podcast.

This week, we're looking to the stars and chatting with Emily Calandrelli. Calandrelli has taken a Master's in Aeronautics and Astronautics (from MIT, no less) and a gift for communication and used them to her advantage in the public sphere - an arena that was, quite frankly, previously only occupied by a couple guys named Nye and Tyson. On this episode, we talk to Calandrelli about what set her on a path toward scientific disciplines, STEM vs. liberal arts, scientific illiteracy and skepticism, sci-fi tech, and what has her most excited for the future.
The Turkey Hunter Podcast with Andy Gagliano | Turkey Hunting Tips, Strategies, and Stories
Early Season Turkey Hunting Strategies with Ernie Calandrelli Ernie Calandrelli joins me this week to discuss early season turkey hunting strategies. Early season in the turkey woods can be a tale of two seasons. The big dominant Toms are busy tending to their harem of hens; and, in doing so, more often than not are unwilling to respond and come into our calling. The subordinate, or satellite Toms, are looking for love in all the wrong places, and they will often run over us to get to that “hen” that they think is begging for attention. In saying that, for us hunters, early season turkey hunting consists of days that are really good and days that are really bad, with the majority of our days being the latter. When dealing with early season turkeys, we can do certain things to increase the odds of being successful. One of those strategies we can try is to mock the boss hen and try to get her angry enough to come into our setup to fight that hen that is trying to tell her and the other turkeys in the area what to do. Ernie and I discuss that strategy as well as other early season turkey hunting strategies in this week’s episode. Listen in and be sure to leave a comment to let me know what your favorite, and most successful, early season turkey hunting strategy is.
