Bob Haro is the Father of Freestyle BMX and the founder of Haro Bikes and Harodesign. Bob grew up in Southern California riding motocross and skateboarding. When he ran out of money to continue racing dirt bikes he turned to BMX. Drawing was Bob's first passion and started illustrating for BMX magazines and brands. He became the staff artists for BMX Action Magazine. At 18 he started his own business, manufacturing BMX Plates and selling tens of thousands in the process. Bob was racing BMX and riding skateparks at night which became the birth of Freestyle. Parks were starting to close down so he was building his own ramps. They would take their ramps on the road doing Freestyle demo shows across the US and then worldwide. Bob designed the first frame and fork for freestyle BMX. Then partnered with Torker to build the first freestyle bike called the Freestyler and Haro Bikes was launched. Haro Bikes grew rapidly turning over 7 million before Bob got an offer to sell it. He took the offer and started Harodesigns in 1993, a brand and marketing company for the action sports and motorsports industries. Bob went on to design the 2008 and 2012 US Olympics BMX Team kit and continues to be an instrumental figure in the BMX world. Tune in to find out how Bob mixed his love of design with BMX, starting businesses, touring the world on his bike, the boom of Freestyle, BMX in the Olympics and loads more! Imagine tipping yourself over the handlebars of a mountain bike while at full speed. Now, imagine you're doing it to become the first woman ever to land a front flip on a mountain bike. It's an extraordinary feat by any measure, but for triple-threat-on-two-wheels Caroline Buchanan, it's just another day at work. Here we get into some big stuff with Caroline, who's a mountain bike and BMX world champ and Olympian. She talks to our executive editor Kara Byers about what it's like to dominate in traditionally male sports, why rejection is a gift, what it takes to tackle your fears head on and succeed, and how actually, you don't necessarily need to find a role model or someone who's doing what you want to be - because you CAN be what you can't see. Caroline Buchanan rode in her first big international BMX race when she was nine, waving to the crowd, soaring down hills, gliding through the air. It was a feeling too good to give up. Even when her brother broke his neck and two arms. Even when she missed out on medals at the London and Rio Olympics. And even when she ended up in hospital, all of it was worth it. Caroline Buchanan endured to become a world champion in both BMX and mountain biking. And she's not done yet. Narrated by actor and star of The InBESTigators, Anna Cooke. A self-confessed adrenaline addict with the injuries to prove it – Caroline Buchanan is held together by bolts, wires, plates … you name it. For a decade this eight-time World Champion was at the top, but is now in unfamiliar territory - as the underdog. In the fifth and latest episode of On Side, Buchanan candidly talks about building not only her brand but her sport, her triumphs, struggles, THAT accident, and why now is the best time to be a female in action sport. We also re-live one of the greatest moments in Australian sport – John Aloisi’s penalty goal against Uruguay which cemented Australia’s spot in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and chat to Paralympian Chad Perris, a bronze medallist in the 100m event at the Rio Olympics, about his career so far and his other “side gig” – sports commentating. Known for her tenacity and down-to-earth attitude, Buchanan is not only an incredible athlete (in three cycling disciplines), she’s a successful business woman, social media influencer and mentor. “A really big goal of mine, initially, was to make the sport known, so help get it on mainstream TV, so when it was footy on a Monday after they’ve had their weekend games I was paying a media liaison to help package my world cup win and BMX was packaged at the same time,” she says. “A lot of money that I invested back in to not only building the sport, building my own brand, it was 5-7 years of really putting everything back in to make this momentum happen, to be able to be this full-time athlete.” Coming back from an off-road accident that nearly killed her, Buchanan admits she has “seen both sides of being an elite athlete in Australia”. Aloisi’s famous penalty goal was voted by the Sport Australia Hall of Fame committee as one of the three greatest sporting moments in Australian history. He says he is asked about it almost daily when in Australia. “[People] remember where they were, what they were doing, whether they were at the game, or in a pub or at home, and I’ve heard some funny stories, it’s a special moment that I was lucky to be a part of,” Aloisi says. With only 5-8% vision, World championship silver medallist Perris says he’s constantly proving himself against the doubters. “I used to play Aussie Rules footy, and as a junior I went in there and I wore sunnies and a hat when I played and you’d always get people questioning why is this guy [playing], how can this guy play this when he can’t see, I’ve dealt with it all my life,” Perris says. A must listen for anyone wanting to push boundaries and defy the odds. An incredible story and conversation on so many levels. The journey to become a BMX legend, building a legacy and creating a foundation in what was once considered a "males" sport is truly amazing. Learning what it takes to bounce back from a near fatal accident. How mentally challenging it is to participate at the Olympic games, and why we should always stay true to our selves, never give up and chase your dreams. Caroline Buchanan's cycling CV is quite extraordinary. Not just because she's an 8x World Champion, but also because she has achieved those titles across 2 multiple disciplines within the sport of cycling (3x in BMX and 5x in mountain biking). She is a 2x Olympian and has now competed at the World Championships in 4 different cycling events. Off the bike, Caroline is committed to the next generation of cyclists and to encouraging more girls to get into the sport, including through her latest venture; a children's book series called 'Girls Can B'. Needless to say, she's a woman of many talents - both on and off the bike. We could have spent the hour just talking about her cycling career, but I wanted to go deeper than that; to discover the mindset and mental strategies she uses to manage her fear (in a risky and potentially dangerous sport) so she can perform on the world stage at her best. Action sports super star Caroline Buchanan has had a wildly successful career on the bike but has achieved just as much off it.Caroline has eight world championships to her name - three in BMX and five in mountain biking. And while dominating two different sports on the global stage, she’s developed into one of the savviest athlete marketers around, creating social media content and building a personal brand that fans and businesses love.Caroline is also passionate about empowering the next generation, launching a scholarship and mentoring program for women in BMX as well as authoring inspiring kids books. But with the highs, have been extraordinary lows. In 2003, when Caroline was just 13, she lost her family home in the Canberra bush fires and was left with not much more than her bikes. There have been countless serious injuries, including most recently a vehicle accident that almost killed her. Even now, 18 months later, Caroline is still rebuilding her body. But what remains is extraordinary resilience, and more motivation than ever to achieve her goals.Caroline shares her story and what she’s learned from the good and bad times, pioneering a multi-sport career, mentoring from surfing champion Layne Beachley, brand deals, high performance habits and much more.Book Caroline Buchanan for guest speaking, marketing or other opportunities on PickStar.PickStar is the best place to book sports stars and personalities for any event, campaign or engagement you can imagine.Choose from over 1300 stars past and present, PickStar works fast with ANY budget. Her accident off the bike is the greatest challenge she has ever faced, and it's remarkable to see her be real about the depression and remain focused on being positive and have a life and career with "no pages missing."
