In this episode, we welcome Catherine Howarth who has been pioneering systems change for over a decade with ShareAction. ShareAction coordinates civil society activism to promote responsible investment across Europe.  We explore the critical role that finance, pension funds, asset managers and big banks have in transitioning to a low carbon future and that there is no space in our carbon budget for further investment in fossil fuels. Catherine talks about their formula for successful campaigning, the need for us to be a movement for change and influence our pension funds and how that can happen and a vision for a sustainable financial system that serves society instead of being so self-serving.You can support the work that ShareAction does by visiting https://shareaction.org/ Who is Catherine Howarth Since 2008, Catherine has been the Chief Executive of ShareAction, an organization that coordinates civil society activism to promote responsible investment across Europe. In addition to her role at ShareAction, Catherine is a board member of the Scott Trust and serves on the HM Treasury's Asset Management Taskforce. She also holds a First Class BA in Modern History from Oxford University and an MSc in Industrial Relations from the London School of Economics. Catherine's expertise in corporate governance has not gone unnoticed, as she was named a 'Rising Star of Corporate Governance' by Yale University's Millstein Center in 2011, and recognised by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader in 2014.When Catherine finds the time for herself, she loves heading up to Scotland to spend some time in the mountains and by the sea.Of course, her two boys keep her occupied at home, but she still manages to sneak in some runs around the East End of London when she can. Where shall we go next, what questions shall we ask? Even the smallest individual action contributes to the building of a greener future - but with just 100 companies producing over 70% of CO2 emissions, the role played by our industry leaders is critical. They have a responsibility to mobilise civil society, by leading industry transformation and reinventing norms. Can global industry leaders help guide the behaviour of consumers and workers? With us to answer these questions, we have Paul Polman, business leader, campaigner, and co-author of ‘Net Positive: how courageous companies thrive by giving more than they take'; Enass Abo-Hamed, CO-Founder and CEO of H2GO power ltd; Catherine Howarth, Chief Executive of Share Action; Samata Pattinson, CEO of Red Carpet Green Dress. Those of us working in health often focus on the government as the main agent to get things done, especially when it comes to public health. But think of all the others out there with power, particularly commercial and investment power.  There are signs that businesses and institutional investors do seem to be getting more interested in health, with some businesses starting to consider their impact on health in their environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting. Are we now at a turning point? Or is interest in health temporary? If businesses and investors really want to improve health, how do they best move forward? And can government do more to support them? Our Chief Executive Dr Jennifer Dixon discusses this with expert guests: Catherine Howarth joined ShareAction as Chief Executive in 2008. ShareAction coordinates civil society activism to promote responsible investment across Europe. Catherine also serves on HM Treasury's Asset Management Taskforce.  John Godfrey joined Legal & General in 2006 and is now Director of Corporate Affairs. Following the COP26 conference in Glasgow, many climate-conscious investors want to know how to match up their investments with their values. The short answer is environmental, social and governance investing — ESG for short. But there are plenty of questions around how ‘green' this really is.Thirty-year-old Harri appeared on one of the first episodes of Money Clinic last year, and his decision to invest in ESG funds appears to have paid off: he has made a decent return. However, he wonders how much this has been down to the underlying investment performance and how much because of the soaring popularity of ESG investments. With a record $3.9tn now held in sustainable assets worldwide, is this outperformance sustainable? Claer is joined by the FT's Manuela Saragosa and Share Action's Catherine Howarth, who have put ESG investing to the test. They offer practical tips on how to make greener choices with your pension,Isa and becoming an activist shareholder. Plus, they debate how worried investors should be about ‘greenwashing'. As COP26 comes to a close, there has been a flurry of commitments to invest trillions of dollars in green technologies and carbon neutral projects. That is the core of ESG investing (or is it?).ESG investing has grown exponentially since the famous 2015 Marc Carney's speech "Breaking the Tragedy of the Horizon" and the 2020 Blackrock letter “Because capital markets pull future risk forward, we will see changes in capital allocation more quickly than we see changes to the climate itself”. Numbers are dizzying. ESG investment has almost trebled over the last five years, reaching $50 trillion in assets in 2021.At the same time, ESG investing seems to be victim of its own success with inflated claims not met by facts. With more than 600 ratings and 5,000 metrics, ESG has become a maze where investors are drowned in an “alphabet soup” of standards while some financial institutions seem to be more focused on fees than purpose. At last, the regulators - whether the EU Commission or the SEC - are starting to intervene to create standards. To try to understand the dynamics of ESG investing, its challenges, effectiveness, and possible solutions, we have invited Catherine Howarth, CEO of Shareaction. Shareaction is a NGO working to assess the quality of sustainability practice of the world's largest institutional investors, and to hold investors accountable on the gap between their sustainability claims and actions. We exchange candidly with Catherine on ESG ratings, shareholders' activism, the divestment movement, and the role of regulators.ReferencesShareaction: https://shareaction.org/ Quilter on ESG: https://media.quilter.com/search/greenwashing-tops-investors-concerns-around-esg-products-new-research-finds/Talking Responsibly: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/talking-responsibly/id1547007524DivestInvest: https://www.divestinvest.org/“Doing Good or Feeling Good” by EDHEC: https://energycentral.com/c/ec/doing-good-or-feeling-good-detecting-greenwashing-climate-investing-edhecEU Taxonomy: https://ec.europa.eu/info/business-economy-euro/banking-and-finance/sustainable-finance/eu-taxonomy-sustainable-activities_enDWS (Deutsche Bank) rocked by $1trillion SEC greenwashing probe: https://www.internationalinvestment.net/news/4036306/dws-rocked-usd1trillion-sec-greenwashing-probe-reportsBank of International Settlements: “A taxonomy of taxonomies” https://www.bis.org/publ/bppdf/bispap118.pdf

This week, The Circular Economy! Currently our economy operates in a linear way. Take, Make, Dispose. It's based on the industrial revolution, and we know this way of doing things has limits. Some of those limits we are reaching even today. But there's a different economy we could create. The Circular Economy. After launching its first-ever hybrid wagon with the facelifted Mondeo, Ford of Europe is now announcing it will bring mild-hybrid variants of the Fiesta and Focus to [Europe]" according to Anthony Karr for Motor1.com US today: "the Fiesta EcoBoost Hybrid and Focus EcoBoost Hybrid will use a version of the 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost equipped with a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) which replaces the traditional alternator. The BISG will recover and store energy usually lost during braking and coasting in a small 48-volt lithium-ion air-cooled battery pack. The energy from the battery will be released during acceleration to provide torque assistance for a “punchier, more responsive performance, particularly at lower engine speeds.” Also, it will run the car’s electrical ancillaries."   https://www.motor1.com/news/315421/ford-focus-fiesta-mild-hybrid/   BYD REVEALS PLANS FOR ALL-NEW E SERIES OF ELECTRIC CARS Chinese automaker BYD officially launched the all-new “e” product series, which will be operated parallel with the “Dynasty” series. There are three sedan models and two SUV models under the “e” series to be rolled out in 2019. Besides, the automaker will start to accept orders of the BYD e1, the first model for the new series, on April 1." Reports InsideEVs.com: "Products under the newly-launched series are developed on the “e-platform”, a BEV platform unveiled by BYD at Auto China 2018. According to BYD’s planning, the “e” series is positioned as a provider of smart BEVs, focusing on quality, cost performance and new intelligent mobility life, and the “Dynasty” matrix, designed to be a forward-looking leader for the BEV era, more highlights technology guidance, car performance and experience."   https://insideevs.com/byd-all-new-e-series-electric-cars/   TESLA MODEL 3 OUTSELLS BMW 3 SERIES, MERCEDES C CLASS IN EUROPE "In its first full month on the market, the Tesla Model 3 shot to #1 on the European sales charts in its so-called luxury mid-size segment. That's quite an accomplishment for Tesla, the electric automaker that hails from California. Even more impressive is that the Model 3 isn't even available in the UK, as right-hand-drive versions have yet to be produced." Writes Eric Loveday for Motor1.com: "The focus here is on sales in the month of February. Those figures for Europe have just become final. So then, exactly how well did the Model 3 do in regards to sales? Well, it outsold some stiff German competition like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. That's like a punch in the face to the German automakers right there."   Felipe Munoz, global analyst for Jato Dynamics: "As we’re seeing in the US, Tesla is also shaking up the European market. Its long-lasting impact will depend on how quickly the German premium makers, Volvo and JLR react to the arrival of the Model 3 to Europe and how quickly they can bring in their own midsize electric cars.”   TESLA MODEL 3 RIGHT-HAND DRIVE SPOTTED IN CALIFORNIA "A right-hand-drive variant of the Tesla Model 3 has been spotted recently in California. In a photo shared on Reddit by user u/Mr_Salty_Peanuts, a black test version of the midsize sedan is seen driving on I-280 with dealer plates. " reports Teslarati: "The sighting of the RHD Model 3 is good news, particularly for reservation holders in the UK in close proximity to locations covered by Tesla’s current European sales ramp, which only cover left-hand drive territories. Tesla’s online configurators generally open a few months prior to deliveries, meaning if the all-electric car maker’s predictions are correct, customers in RHD locations like the UK, Australia, and Hong Kong will soon have an opportunity to design their vehicles."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-right-hand-drive-spotted-in-california/   TESLA DELAYS DELIVERIES OF MODEL 3 WITH STANDARD BATTERY PACK Fred at Electrek picks up today on the case of the Standard Range Model 3 that isn't to be, at least not yet. In some cases, Tesla is trying to upsell them."When Tesla finally launched the standard Model 3 for $35,000 last month, it promised 2 to 4 weeks delivery timelines to buyers. We have yet to see evidence of Tesla delivering any Standard Model 3 to date, but the automaker has delivered many Standard Plus Model 3, which was also launched at the same time. Over the previous day, Electrek has received several reports from buyers who had a delivery date for their Standard Model 3 after they have been told by Tesla that they couldn’t deliver the vehicle."   https://electrek.co/2019/03/26/tesla-model-3-standard-battery-delay/   AUDI A4-SIZED ELECTRIC SEDAN DUE 2023 TO FIGHT TESLA MODEL 3 "Audi is kicking its electrification plans into high gear with the launch of the E-Tron due to be followed later this year by its more stylish sibling, the E-Tron Sportback. These two fully electric crossovers will be joined by the Tesla Model S-rivaling E-Tron GT in the second half of next year, with a road-going Q4 E-Tron in the pipeline for a late 2020 launch." Reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com US today: "the aforementioned E-Tron GT (pictured here) will be joined by a smaller sedan similar in size with the A4 to go up against the Tesla Model 3. The new zero-emissions model will ride on the same PPE platform as the E-Tron GT, which by the way will have approximately the same size as the A6 Sedan. the A4-sized EV is earmarked for a 2023 release. If that’s correct, it could mean we will see the production version as early as 2022."   https://www.motor1.com/news/315404/audi-electric-sedan-2023-launch/   COMEDIAN JAY LENO SAYS ELECTRIC CARS 'WILL BE THE FUTURE' USA Today have been talking to Jay Leno: "While Leno has a horde of well-kept antique cars in a custom-built bunker in Burbank, California, the self-proclaimed "big car lover" also has an affinity for modern vehicles with high-tech features." "I have a Tesla Model S. That's the future," Leno told USA TODAY. "I predict a child born today, most likely by the time they're 18, may not have ever ridden in an internal combustion car. I think electric will be the future." "It wasn't until recently with new battery technology that you get hundreds and hundreds of miles (on a charge)," Leno said. "I think we'll see a thousand-mile range pretty soon," Leno said about battery-powered cars.   https://eu.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2019/03/18/jay-leno-electric-cars-are-future/3175820002/   BIG OIL PUMPS $1 BILLION INTO CLIMATE CHANGE LOBBYING, EXECS LAUGH ABOUT TRUMP ACCESS "Major oil companies have spent $1 billion on climate lobbying that is “overwhelmingly in conflict” with the Paris Agreement, according to one new report. And another report reveals oil execs laughing about their newfound access within the Trump administration." Reports Electrek: "While many oil companies have made a public show of their green energy investments, InfluenceMap reports that ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, BP and Total have used more than $1 billion in shareholder funds since the Paris Agreement on “misleading climate-related branding and lobbying.” Catherine Howarth, chief executive of London-based responsible investment charity ShareAction: "InfluenceMap’s research confirms a widely held suspicion that Big Oil’s glossy sustainability reports and shiny climate statements are all rhetoric and no action. These companies have mastered the art of corporate doublespeak – by boasting about their climate credentials while quietly using their lobbying firepower to sabotage the implementation of sensible climate policy and pouring millions into groups that engage in dirty lobbying on their behalf.”   https://electrek.co/2019/03/25/big-oil-climate-lobbying/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
