It wasn’t long ago that China was considered “uninvestable” and that the “exceptional” US market was the only game in town. That’s not the case anymore. According to Edward Cole, Man Group’s head of multi-strategy equities, nothing is permanently exceptional or uninvestable. Once you accept that premise, the great rotation currently underway makes a lot more sense. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are we ready for a hedge fund world where machine learning guides trading decisions and data scientists outnumber traditional traders? In this Tech Talks Daily Podcast episode, I sit down with Gary Collier, CTO of Man Group, to find out. Man Group traces its roots back more than two centuries to its days supplying rum, yet it now stands at the forefront of AI-driven finance. Gary explains how the firm's open-source platforms, Alpha and Rosa, power everything from signal generation to automated execution, all while keeping a firm grip on the art of human oversight. I found it intriguing how their internal ManGPT system used by over half the organization proves that large language models and neural networks aren't just hyped. They're part of daily operations in purely systematic strategies and supporting discretionary portfolio managers who want real-time insights from a sea of unstructured data. We also explore ArcticDB, Man Group's open-source data science database, enabling it to process billions of rows quickly. Gary argues that without this kind of data infrastructure, AI research stalls under the weight of time-consuming manual tasks. Throughout our conversation, Gary shares how his hobbyist coder and physicist background influences a data-first culture. It was fascinating to hear how he believes AI could soon disrupt creative aspects of quantitative research, allowing advanced models to generate strategy ideas rather than simply refining existing ones. At the same time, he underscores the importance of transparency. In a world where billions in assets are at stake, pure black-box automation doesn't cut it, and teams need to explain how trades are executed and why the data looks the way it does. From front-office analytics to deep research projects, it's clear that AI pulses through Man Group's veins. Still, Gary reminds me that people remain vital for framing the right questions and deciding when to trust the outputs. Will AI become the main engine of future hedge fund strategies, or will human ingenuity continue to guide our biggest calls on the market? And how will your organization embrace the growing tide of machine-led innovation?

Stay in touch and sign up for Paco's weekly email newsletter, The Nerdletter. In this episode of Weird Finance, host Paco de Leon, along with Stephanie Bucko and Cristina Livadary from Mana Financial Life Design (@manafld), dive into the essentials of thinking like a financial planner. They discuss targeting clients with growth mindsets, particularly those in helping professions and the sandwich generation. Stephanie explains the trade-offs for business owners aiming to keep taxes low versus paying more into Social Security and retirement plans. Christina shares insights on mastering personal finance and emphasizes the importance of understanding financial numbers. Cristina is a Certified Financial Planner® and Registered Life Planner®. Before Mana, she led sales and consulting efforts as a Regional Director with Russell Investments, where she consulted for and worked with over 10,000 financial advisors. After years of experience in the industry she grew dissatisfied with the wide disparities in knowledge, empathy, and skill within the advisor population. Cristina is a Bucknell University graduate, with a BA in Political Science and Spanish. She launched Mana with Stephanie in 2018 based on the belief that even greater success can be achieved by solving issues holistically - with individuals and their families. Since founding Mana, Cristina has been recognized for her accomplishments within the industry by leading organizations such as Investment News' 40 under 40 in 2020 and Investopedia's Top 100 Advisors in 2023. Cristina is living her own life plan, working in her dream career as a business owner and a financial life planner who does everything in her power to positively impact the lives of her clients. When she's not hard at work, you can find Cristina in the great outdoors. She is passionate about surfing and adventuring around the world with her family and friends. Stephanie is a Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst®. She graduated from Bucknell University with a BSBA in Accounting. Following her undergraduate education, she audited hedge funds in New York City with PricewaterhouseCoopers during the 2008 financial crisis, and then joined Man Group, the world's largest publicly traded hedge fund. At Man Group she served as a risk manager for six years, handling $15 billion in hedge funds. After years of serving banks, pensions and endowments, Stephanie became interested in bringing institutional quality services to a broader population. In 2018, Stephanie launched Mana with Cristina out of the realization that investment management is only a small piece of the services that individuals truly need in a financial advisor. Since founding Mana, Stephanie has been recognized for her accomplishments within the industry by leading organizations such as Investopedia's Top 100 Advisors of 2023. She is also a regular contributor to MyStockOptions.com, the financial advice industry's premier site for equity compensation. When Stephanie isn't educating herself on the markets or building complex spreadsheets, you can find her outside. Her favorite days are spent on the ski slopes, riding horses, and bird watching. It's not just the prospect of deteriorating fundamentals that has Man Group's Mark Jones skeptical about stocks these days. It's also the risk of money flowing into fixed-income investments now that they're sporting attractive yields. Jones, who is the deputy chief executive of the world's largest publicly traded hedge-fund manager, joined the What Goes Up podcast to give his outlook on markets and explain what strategies have been working well at his firm.“I think the risk-reward in equities is very, very tough at the moment,” he says. The first reason is a potential further cut in earnings expectations. Second is the flow of money into alternatives to stocks such as government bonds and corporate credit. “Whether that's the consumer or whether that's big institutional clients starting to come back to an asset class that, frankly, had fallen relatively out of favor, some of that flow of funds is also an issue for equities as just people move money around.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Man Group Chief Executive Officer Luke Ellis started his career in the City almost 40 years ago, the square mile “had many of the worst aspects of the UK,” he says. It was just “a posh part of UK society that looked down on anything other than posh White men.” But in 2023, things are different. Although he cautions more progress needs to be made, especially at the senior levels, Ellis says “the City is now at least as good as the national average and probably better” when it comes to race and gender equality. In this week's In the City, the leader of the world's largest publicly listed hedge fund joins hosts David Merritt and Francine Lacqua in a conversation about the importance of diversity in the City, and how far the UK financial industry has come in terms of recruiting from a bigger pool of talented people. One of the areas Ellis says needs more attention is “social mobility,” which he calls “the last bastion of open prejudice.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
