At the age of 37, the University of Mississippi hired Jeff McManus as the Director of the newly formed Landscape Services Department. As one of the most junior directors on campus, the immediate challenges that faced him were staggering - exceptionally low morale with an unacceptable lack of productivity. In many ways, the Ole Miss landscape services was actually an extreme example of the same problems facing many organizations then and today. Jeff believed the challenges could be overcome with focused team effort. So, he established a four-step process he calls “The GROW System.” Jeff works from the position that everybody wants to be successful and they can be - by recognizing their personal potential. Great teams, Raising results, Offense scores and Winning Attitudes, these four things, formed Jeff's GROW System. Jeff has been praised by Forbes and the Huffington Post for his book, Growing Weeders into Leaders, where he shares how his team went from last place to being on the national stage. It wasn't long before PGMS, Newsweek, Princeton Review, and USA Today all recognized Jeff's teamwork and awarded their efforts with the nation's most beautiful campus designation. Dan Cathy, chairman of board of Chick fil A, had this to say about Jeff's book, “…[it] serves as a guide for all current and future leaders. As a member of the leadership team at Chick-fil-A, part of my job is to help define the future of our business. One thing we have learned throughout my tenure at Chick-fil-A is that there's a big difference between locating leaders and cultivating them. Jeff reminds us that all leaders can be cultivated with the right pruning and nurturing.” Jeff holds a bachelor's degree in Landscape and Ornamental Horticulture from Auburn University and is a Certified Arborist and Grounds Manager.

She explains:-Growing up in Bronx NY and studying dance and music throughout my formative years, I would never have imagined the professional life realized. I studied Botany, Horticulture, Landscape Design, but nothing fit until my first hike in the Catskills (NY) Forever Wild forest. I became a Certified Arborist in 1996, working as a Consulting Arborist, specializing in reviewing/ editing/ authoring Tree/ Landscape Preservation/ Protection specifications for large public infrastructure projects, developing a “Building WITH Trees” approach to design and build. I co-organized and chaired NYC Root Zone, a 501-c-3, authoring publications and providing informal educational opportunities for landscape professionals. I am now semi-retired, living in Luzern Switzerland and working to enhance and advance European Urban Forestry through • contributions to COST projects; • the Swiss federally funded Climate Change Adaptation project; • implementation of i-Tree as an i-Tree team affiliate member; • European Forum on Urban Forestry steering committee membership.

In this episode, local Naturalist Rose Holmes joins us to discuss:-her background and her interest in nature-the Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve (KMP)-what she and the other Naturalists do there-what programs the KMP has -what plants and animals are thereAbout Rose: "Rose Belzung Holmes developed a love and appreciation of nature through an upbringing in the Texas Hill Country, in the Twin Sisters area just south of Blanco, Texas. Spending time exploring the landscape and collecting bugs, plants, snakes, and fossils encouraged her interest in exploring careers that had roots in the environment. She received a B.S. in Rangeland Ecology and Management (2008) and a M.Ed. with a teaching certificate (2011), both from Texas A&M University in College Station. Her favorite part of education was the hands on applications, and she discovered a passion for teaching and sharing what she learned as well. After graduation, she moved to the Spring area with her new husband and spent a few months working part-time for the Texas A&M Forest service at the W.G. Jones State Forest office in Conroe as a program outreach coordinator. While only with the Forest Service for less than six months, she made connections with other enthusiastic professionals in the Forest Service as well as other industries that would continue to build and grow knowledge and networks up to the present day. It was during this time that she developed a new passion for trees and began the process of learning and studying to become a Certified Arborist. One thing she continued to learn is that there is always something to learn! "Rose began working for the Harris County Precinct 4 Parks department in 2012, and began her career as an education programmer stationed at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center in Humble, TX. During her time here, she continued to study trees, birds, bugs, aquatic science, and any new information she could glean from other experienced naturalists. Over time, she has fulfilled other roles in the parks department including Forester, Naturalist, KMP Director, and Assistant Superintendent. Rose moved over to Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve after its opening in 2017 to grow and lead the educational programs offered to the public at KMP and other nearby locations. She enjoys the beauty of the area and exploring wild places when the time allows; and while she doesn’t get to lead programs as often any more, educating and interacting with the public is still her favorite part of the job. Her favorite programs to teach include topics of trees, plants, birds, bugs, and aquatic sciences. "When not at work, Rose enjoys sewing, quilting, crafting, baking and spending time with her two young kids (2 and 3 years old) and husband. A favorite family activity is walking down to the neighborhood pond to visit the turtles (and the playground of course)."Contact Michael:1. ccerppodcast@aol.com2. http://www.goldams.com 3. https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-gold-2883921/ 4. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1152144714995033/Join us at CCERP on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1152144714995033/Show notes.1. We have a conversation with Hope's brother Paul about the health and structure of trees. The similarities to the health and structure of relationships is pretty astonishing! Paul gives helpful tips all throughout and links below will take you to sites for more information about trees and how to hire a professional to address your tree concerns. Tip from Paul: “A good arborist should be able to hear your concerns/goals for your trees or property and make recommendations, explaining the reasoning behind them. Any Joe Schmoe can give you a price to ‘take off some limbs' or ‘remove that tree'".
