Know the name? If not then tap in and think of Team Canada, University of Virginia, Iowa State and all the way to the Philadelphia 76ers. Marial has years ahead of him and after a positive season with the Maine Celtics, he looks forward to signing somewhere soon. Marial takes us back to his time growing up in Ottawa being surrounded by four siblings (two who were serious hoopers), and his father who is a former D1 basketball player. In his Grade 12 year, Marial made the decision to move from St. Patrick's high school to the storied program at Blair Academy in New Jersey, where names like Luol Deng and Charlie Villanueva also attended. From there the decision on which school to attend became a tough one. After committing to Marquette, then head coach Buzz Williams left for Virginia Tech so Marial decided to attend the University of Virginia instead. Some great insight and thoughts about his three years there, but in the end he ultimately decided to transfer for his senior year at Iowa State where he averaged 19 ppg in 2018-19, was an Associate Press Honorable Mention All-American and BIG 12 Tournament MVP. The ups, downs and in-between are all in Episode 110. Marial shows great reflection and understanding of who he is all while staying positive and reflecting on where he's come. Khalid and Jamal are joined by legendary Blair Academy head coach, Joe Mantegna. Mantegna talks about how it all started for him, coaching the likes of Charlie Villanueva, Luol Deng and Royal Ivey as a young coach, the state of the global game, having coached the USA Nike Hoop Summit Team, and much more.
As a player, Joe Mantegna says he was the college basketball equivalent of Rudy. But even before his playing days at Ithaca College were over, the coaching seeds sown by his father, who's in the Massachusetts Basketball Hall of Fame, had begun to germinate, and he soon found himself on the sidelines at Boston University and Lehigh University. But when he came to a fork in the road, he decided that he wanted to have the same kind of impact on teenagers' lives as his dad had, and so took the head coaching job at Blair Academy. It's rare for a rookie high school coach to win immediately, and more unusual still to be blessed with pro-level talent, but Joe had both when future All-Star Luol Deng and longtime NBA vet Charlie Villanueva showed up in his first recruiting class. Since then, Mantegna has built Blair into a national powerhouse, winning four national titles and, more importantly, developing many more high quality young men. In this can't miss episode, Joe gets raw about: What moves him when he thinks about the players whose lives he has touchedHow rooming with future NBA coach Steve Clifford gave him a coaching masterclass Why he teamed up with Royal Ivey and Luol Deng to coach the South Sudan national teamWhat role the principles of grit, gratitude, joyfulness + selflessness play in Blair's cultureHow mudita - finding joy in other people's success - is his team's equivalent of Doc Rivers's UbuntuKeep learning from Joe on his Twitter feed and at his basketball camps.

In Episode 1136, Sean Woodley is joined by Amit Mann (Yahoo Sports Canada) to attempt to contextualize Scottie Barnes' incredible rookie season within the history of Raptors rookie performances. Off the top, they talk about what they've both enjoyed most about the Barnes experience, and why Barnes' malleability as a player should keep the Raptors from funneling him down a narrow development track. Next, they look back at some other great rookie seasons in Toronto Raptors history and try to figure out where Barnes slots in on the all-time list. Damon Stoudamire and Vince Carter are the two clear best rookies the team has ever had, but is Barnes a comfortable third? What about Marcus Camby, Chris Bosh, Charlie Villanueva or OG Anunoby? Le Calendrier de l'Avent des Chroniques de Motor City - Jour 5
"Bouffonnerie. Pour aller plus loin : Pistons season in review: It would have been difficult to miss all the 'buffoonery' Pistons' Revolt Embarrassing To Team, City Pistons coach John Kuester can't survive much longer with team in constant turmoil John Kuester talks Pistons stint "Les Chroniques de Motor City", c'est votre podcast dédié à l'Histoire et à la Culture des Detroit Pistons. Kemba Walker's 2011 national champions and Charlie Villanueva's 2005 Big East regular season champions provide a striking contrast in style. On one side you have an unexpectedly talented, extremely young team that emerged as national champions seemingly out of nowhere. On the other side you have a group physically comparable to the Monstars who set out to defend their title and ultimately fell short. It's no question which of these teams would win in a popularity contest, but if you stop and think for more than a moment, do we really know which of these teams would come out on top? That's the question Tim Fontenault and I will set out to answer as we discuss the 2011 and 2005 teams in our 4 vs. 13 matchup. Like what you hear? Want to offer feedback? We’re kicking off season 2 of Uncreative Radio with special guest Charlie Villanueva! Charlie Villanueva is a longtime friend of the studio. We’ve worked with him on a number of projects in the past, and most recently on our History Matters series where he shares the life and legacy of Michael Jordan. In this episode of Uncreative Radio, Charlie V joined us in the studio to discuss his life’s passion, the culture of the sport and the players who made the greatest impact on his game. But that’s not all… we’re also discussing life after basketball and the change in responsibilities that come with retirement. According to Charlie V, “Money doesn’t make the man.” And he’s correct. But many people who see early success don’t realize this simple fact until it’s too late. Charlie V did. He knew that basketball would not last forever and so he set himself up for success and prosperity when the time would come to hang his jersey. He had a plan and he put it in motion. Athletes or young stars who fail to see the inevitable put themselves at a disadvantage later in life. Charlie V shares many valuable lessons with us, so be sure to tune in on February 6th at 6 PM ET.
We’re on Uncreative Radio with Rob Villanueva to discuss why successful athletes go broke, the fake veil of Instagram, and how creative professionals can improve their online presence. Rob Villanueva is a creative consultant based in New York City. He is an expert at building brands for professional athletes and businesses that produce far-reaching financial benefits. Rob Villanueva started out in I.T. in the world of PC. By the time he was 14, he was being paid for his I.T. work. From there, he got into network engineering, which started him on a 15-year career that led to Silicon Valley. Technology was his life right up until his brother, Charlie Villanueva, was drafted to the NBA. He quit his job. And started a new career which eventually brought him to the world of creative brand consulting. On this episode of Uncreative Radio with Rob Villanueva, Rob shares his experience living alongside professional athletes in the NBA and how early decision making decides one’s financial future forever. It’s all fun and games when a relative, a close friend, or even you get drafted to live out lifelong dreams of playing in the big league of sports. But at what point should that excitement be channeled into planning for one’s future? When Rob Villanueva’s brother was drafted to play for the Toronto Raptors, he followed him to the NBA. He enjoyed the excitement and partying. Who wouldn’t? Looking back, however, he realizes how many obvious money-making opportunities he failed to capitalize on. Or, in his words, “We should all be millionaires right now.” Rob did not take advantage of those early years. A lot of the athletes in his company didn’t. Seeing their pitfalls, and learning from his own mistakes, led Rob Villanueva into the world of creative brand consulting where he recognizes and optimizes every financial opportunity for his client’s.
