As Covid-19 restrictions lifted around the world and countries stopped reporting on case numbers, the events of 2020 and 2021 faded further into our collective memory. Against the threat of looming recession and a war in Europe, it was easy to forget the turmoil brought on by the pandemic. Then, in January 2023, China announced it was reopening its borders and abandoning quarantine measures. After 3 years, in which the entire population was locked down without regard for cost or consequence, China was open for business. It's ‘zero-Covid' policy hit its economy hard. GDP in 2022 slumped to its lowest growth rate in almost half a century. Energy demand was affected as a result: LNG imports slumped 20% year-on-year, as did oil consumption. At the opening of the National People's Congress in early March, outgoing Premier Li Keqiang announced a growth target of around 5% for 2023. Will China's reconnection with the global economy provide enough of a boost in trade and investment? Under Wood Mackenzie's base-case scenario, we now expect China's economy to grow 5.5% this year. On the podcast today, we look at the possible pathways to growth for the Chinese economy, and the impact of its reopening on energy supply, markets and prices. Joining Liz Dennett are Alan Gelder and Massimo Di-Odoardo. Alan is Vice President of Refining, Chemicals and Oil Markets at Wood Mackenzie. Massimo is Vice President of Global Gas and LNG Research at Wood Mackenzie. In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, we are joined by Dr. Yanzhong Huang to discuss the impact of China's Zero-Covid policy and how reopening has affected the country. He explains that China's response to the Covid-19 pandemic evolved over three phases, the most recent of which occurred in December 2022 with the end of strict controls. Dr. Huang argues that mounting social and economic pressure pushed the Chinese government to make a dramatic policy shift without warning. Lastly, he examines how the end of Zero-Covid could contribute to China's economic recovery, but could also undermine the public's confidence in Chinese leadership. Dr. Yanzhong Huang is a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations, where he directs the Global Health Governance roundtable series. He is also a professor and director of global health studies at Seton Hall University's School of Diplomacy and International Relations, where he developed the first academic concentration among U.S. professional international affairs schools that explicitly addresses the security and foreign policy aspects of health issues.

The abrupt end of China's Zero Covid policy shocked the world. What do we know about the consequences of this change in tack? Accurate figures from Xi Jinping's Government are hard to come by and the Chinese people are torn in two directions: with excitement about opening up and fear as Covid rips through the population. Cindy Yu, assistant editor at The Spectator, joins Alex Andreou to find out what the mood is like, and what opening up means for the rest of the world. “Twenty years ago we were talking about ‘The Chinese Century'. I don't think China is going to take over the USA at this rate.” “In terms of Taiwan or Russia, China is going to want to do the stable thing for now. “All of this will have a positive impact on the world economy because China is so integrated into the world economy.” www.patreon.com/bunkercast Written and presented by Alex Andreou. In response to the largest public protests since Tiananmen Square, Chinese government officials have signaled a shift away from 'Zero Covid' and eased some restrictions. China's leader, Xi Jinping, has been firmly committed to eliminating coronavirus infections, with over 300 million citizens currently in lockdown, and mandatory quarantine and mass testing. Frustration at the human toll of these restrictions has resulted in demonstrations in at least 18 cities. Will this government back down be enough to quell the unrest, or does this protest movement signal a serious challenge to the world's most powerful authoritarian government?
China was one of the first countries to produce a COVID vaccine but nearly three years into the pandemic, only 50 percent of its population is vaccinated. Why is that? And why did Chinese leaders opt for lockdowns instead of a more aggressive vaccination campaign? On this episode, Cameron and Adam unpack the issue and assess what sustained protests could mean for China and the world. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Anger over China's “Zero-COVID” policy erupted in protests this week. It's a startling and nearly unheard-of challenge to President Xi's power, a short time after he secured a third term in office. The anger over Zero COVID is unique, the staff writer Jiayang Fan tells the host Tyler Foggatt, because it has united disparate groups across China that transcend class and geography. But Fan cautions about concluding this moment is the start of a revolution: “These political wobbles are something that the Communist Party is accustomed to, to a certain degree, despite trying to prevent it at all costs.” A clampdown seems to be already under way. The protests also arrive at a delicate moment in U.S.-China relations. Tensions over trade and Taiwan have flared. The Biden Administration has even criticized China's Zero-COVID restrictions and lockdowns. “I can see Beijing using Biden's words as a piece of evidence that the protests in China are not organic but somehow seeded by hostile foreign agents,” Fan says. “Even though clearly not many foreigners are getting into China these days.”

Ask 40,000 surgeons from around the world what they would pick to scientifically investigate and what do they choose? They voted for a new trial to establish whether changing to new surgical gloves and clean instruments just before abdominal wounds are closed up during surgery, would reduce infection. Thirteen thousand operations in seven countries later (in Benin, Ghana, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa) the answer to the most common complication of surgery is in, and the results are published in the journal, the Lancet. Co-author Aneel Bhangu, senior lecturer in surgery at the University of Birmingham, tells Claudia how the findings of this apparently simple step, will change surgical guidelines around the world. We all have a space around us that we claim as our own. If anybody comes too close, we feel uncomfortable or even threatened. But what has social distancing and the pandemic done to our personal space? Science writer David Robson reports from one of the biggest brain sciences conferences in the world, Neuroscience 2022 in San Diego on new research, using virtual reality, that revealed, surprisingly, that our personal space had shrunk. But, crucially, while our personal force field has reduced, it's also hardened. And according to the study, David says, we're now much less tolerant if this new, reduced 'peripersonal distance' is breached. And BBC global health correspondent, Naomi Grimley, joins Claudia in the Health Check studio and reports on the challenge to China's Zero-Covid strategy as coronavirus cases rise; Africa's first conference on the disabling condition club foot and a new study on acupuncture for pregnant women with lower back pain. Today's slide deck: http://bit.ly/3ttblgo - Click here to open an account with Saxo - Today we continue to find reason to question the quality of this melt-up in equity markets after last Thursday's soft US CPI print, with the first prominent Fed official already out overnight with pushback against this drop in US yields. Still, that's not to say that the move can't extend in the short term, as the market is also hoping that a shift in China's Zero Covid policy is coming. Xi and Biden will meet today ahead of the G20 meeting. We also look at stocks to watch this week, an important week for earnings, the big moves in metals both precious and industrial, the US dollar and much more. Today's pod features Peter Garnry on equities and John J. Hardy hosting an on FX. Read daily in-depth market updates from the Saxo Market Call and Saxo Strategy Team here. This week on Sinica, Kaiser chats with Minister Xu Xueyuan, Deputy Chief of Mission at the PRC Embassy in Washington, D.C.A few words about the process, in the interest of transparency:Minister Xu's team did request questions in advance, and they were all accepted without alteration except to suggest that two questions, both related to public diplomacy efforts, be combined. Questions on subjects like Taiwan, Xinjiang, and China's Zero-COVID policy were all accepted without even any suggestions on changes of wording. Kaiser was also able to follow up on questions without any objection at all.Where Minister Xu cited numbers and made factual claims, we made a good faith effort to check them — for example, on the number of acres in the recent offshore oil lease approvals made by the Biden administration. Doubtless, there will be listeners who will wish that Kaiser had been more forceful, and there may be some who believe I was perhaps too forceful. Sinica is not a “gotcha” show and never has been, and we believe there is value in hearing the perspectives of a ranking Chinese diplomat, and we hope you agree that the interview is very much worth listening to.The interview has only been edited only for clarity and concision — taking out filler or hesitation words and pick-ups. 2:56 – Does the Biden administration's China policy diverge from Trump's? 8:29 – China's role in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization15:09 – China's position on the Ukraine war 19:21 – How the Ukraine conflict factors into Beijing's decision-making on Taiwan 23:11 – The diminishing appeal of “one country, two systems”29:56 – Beijing's suspension of climate talks after the Pelosi visit38:20 – U.S.-China coordination on alleviating global economic issues46:37 – The possibility of diplomatic concessions to improve relations52:29 –The decline in people-to-people exchange between China and the U.S.1:00:27 – China's Dynamic Zero-COVID policy1:08:16 – The 20th Party Congress' impact on U.S.-China relations1:10:51 – Considering the Xinjiang issue from the American perspective1:20:10 – The unintended consequences of wolf-warrior diplomacy1:24:45 – Differing views on China in the Global South vs. Global NorthA full transcript of this interview is available at thechinaproject.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

When China first instituted its zero-COVID policy, it was a success: as other countries struggled with soaring infection rates and overburdened hospitals, life for many Chinese citizens began to look normal again within months—so long as they weren't infected. But the omicron variant changed the game. Now, people are speaking out against draconian lockdown measures they say are inappropriate to face the current level of threat. How did zero-COVID evolve from being the most effective virus prevention strategy in the world to a disproportionate and punitive system? And how has that evolution expanded state control?
