On this episode, we have the pleasure of diving into the world of community transformation with Dr. Chris Lambert, a visionary who's redefining nonprofit success and neighborhood revitalization. Dr. Chris Lambert is the founder and CEO of Life Remodeled, an award-winning author of "Next Level Nonprofit," and founder of the Next Level Nonprofit organizational operating system. His journey began far from the nonprofit sphere, with aspirations of law school and dreams of a lucrative career in real estate development. However, during his junior year at Indiana University, a profound spiritual awakening redirected his path towards a more service-oriented life. After earning his MDiv and a doctorate in preaching, Chris, along with his wife, moved to Liberia where they played a pivotal role in helping a village drill a well, acquire farm animals, and build their very first school. This transformative experience in Liberia set the stage for what would become his life's work. Upon returning to the U.S., Chris founded the church Ekklesia and shortly thereafter, in 2010, launched Life Remodeled. This impactful organization focuses on repurposing vacant school buildings into vibrant community centers and spearheading sustainable neighborhood revitalization projects. Dr. Lambert's work has not only earned him recognition on platforms like TEDx and accolades such as Crain's 40 Under 40, but also the admiration of communities and leaders around the nation. Yet, for Chris, the true excitement lies in the journey ahead and the people who join him in making a lasting difference. In today's episode, Dr. Lambert shares invaluable insights into creating scalable, sustainable, and impactful nonprofit organizations. He discusses the challenges and triumphs of turning abandoned structures into thriving community hubs, the importance of community involvement in revitalization projects, and how other nonprofit leaders can apply the principles of his Next Level Nonprofit system to magnify their impact. Dr. Chris Lambert, CEO and Founder of the Detroit based Life Remodeled, joins the podcast to share how he built an innovative organization through four essential elements: team unity, a compelling vision, a sound strategy, and efficient execution. In his book, Next Level Nonprofit, breaks down the strategies that he applied. Prepare to get into the nitty-gritty because Dr. Lambert is not at all hesitant to share the worst mistakes that he made that gave him the best lessons of all. Tune in!
Seth D. Kaplan gained an international reputation early in his career as an expert in fixing fragile states — lawless places around the globe with deeply flawed political, economic, and legal structures. The United States is not a fragile state in that sense. But it is a fragile society in which too many areas (rich and poor alike) are suffering from anomie and decay, the symptoms of which include family disintegration, rising rates of loneliness and depression, the opioid crisis, and deaths of despair. In his new book Fragile Neighborhoods: Repairing American Society, One Zip Code at a Time, Kaplan applies lessons learned from his work overseas to revitalizing American society at the local level. While American popular culture valorizes the lone hero, Kaplan emphasizes that our country's success has not been rooted in rugged individualism and self-interest but instead has been “the product of cooperation, collective action, and dense social bonds embedded within robust structures.” In his book, Kaplan suggests that by rebuilding and renewing local institutions — and the social ties that hold them together — we can restore neighborhoods as places where families and communities can thrive. In this podcast discussion, Kaplan delves into the real-life examples of individuals and organizations he encountered throughout his research that succeeded in hyperlocal renewal by focusing their efforts on supporting communities, schools, families, churches, and physical habitats. He talks about former lawyer Dreama Gentry, whose organization works with leaders and educators in rural Appalachia to instill students with local pride as well as education and job skills, and pastor Chris Lambert's gradual realization, during his effort to create a community hub in Detroit, that the hard work of building social trust had to come before the provision of good works. Kaplan's analysis explains why so many American neighborhoods are in trouble even amid material affluence and points out how Americans can reunite and repair their fragile society.

Next Level Nonprofit: How to Build A Dream Team and Increase Lasting Impact Dr. Chris Lambert is the author of Next Level Nonprofit and Founder/CEO of Life Remodeled. Chris originally pursued a degree in marketing at Indiana University with the hope of attending law school and launching a career as a real estate developer. A spiritual awakening during his junior year led to a passion to follow Jesus, and Chris eventually followed a call to Fuller and Gordon-Conwell seminaries, where he earned his MDiv and doctorate in preaching. Moving to Liberia in 2007, he and his wife helped a village raise the necessary resources for a well, farm animals, and a new school building. Upon returning to the U.S., Chris founded a church called Ekklesia. In 2010 he started Life Remodeled, which repurposes vacant school buildings into one-stop hubs of opportunities and helps create neighborhood revitalization that lasts. Additionally, he and his dream team built and launched the Next Level Nonprofit organizational operating system. From the TEDx stage to lists like Crain's 40 Under 40, Building Design + Construction 40 Under 40, and SMART BUSINESS Dealmaker of the Year, Chris' reputation precedes him. But it's the journey ahead—and the people he's asked to help lead the way—that excites him most. Nearly every nonprofit organization I know believes the people they serve deserve the highest level of excellence. However, the challenge is they are so focused on serving those outwardly, they don't spend enough time, talent, and energy on their inward, internal systems that will ensure greater impact and greater reach. As a result, they cannot serve their communities at the level they want to. I lead a Detroit-based nonprofit that revitalizes neighborhoods. Our first four years were pretty messy, but then we hit our stride. Over the next eight years, our organization invested more than $43 million into Detroit neighborhoods, renovated four school buildings, mobilized more than 77,000 volunteers, and beautified over 2,000 city blocks. We've been recognized as one of the best-managed nonprofits and Candid and Charity Navigator have awarded us their highest possible ratings. How did we do it? By creating a system we call Next Level Nonprofit, and I'm going to show listeners how to implement this practical and proven organizational operating system so they will soon be able to build the dream team they've been longing for… and increase lasting impact. The dog days of August content are here, and we're featuring a movie about talking dogs, among other topics. Host Neal Pollack brings all the podcast fun as usual. Here's what we offer:• Pablo Gallaga stops by our professional podcasting studios to discuss 'Blue Beetle.' As a certified Latino, Pablo appreciates the DC superhero film's Mexican-culture deep cuts, including Maria del Barrio, El Chapulin Colorado, and George Lopez's crazy tio energy. Both he and Neal agree that the Blue Beetle is a bit of a formulaic origin story, and the action and CGI could have been better. But lead Xolo Maridueña gives a star-making turn, and the movie's warm embrace of Mexican family dynamics distinguishes it a bit from the mid-superhero movie pack.•Rachel Llewellyn has a surprise rave for 'Strays,' the talking-dog movie from the guys who brought you all the other movies. Beneath the excessive scatology is a semi-deep warning about the dangers of pet abuse. Neal found some of the non-poop-related dog humor funny, and both he and Rachel agree that Strays might be a little underrated. It's definitely not for kids, though. If you took the kids to this, we're calling Parent Control on you.•Chris Lambert is back to rage against the rise of MovieTok. A recent New York Times article about the MovieTok phenomenon drove Chris to TikTok, and he did not like what he saw: Paid shills with a raft of extremely uninteresting opinions. They may think they're younger and cooler than "computer"-based old-school critics, but they're not. They have very little to say, and much of what they do have to say is wrong. Neal does take some schadenfreude in watching millennials, the worst generation of all time, suffering at the thought that they are slowly becoming obsolescent with a younger generation replacing them. But it serves them right! No matter your age, though, you're definitely listening to our cast this week. Thanks for checking it out.
In this dog days edition of the BFG podcast, host Neal Pollack welcomes new contributor Chris Lambert to discuss the most important issue of our time: People taking photos of movies while they are in movies. This should be a crime, though Chris remembers a time when movies used to be "more chill." He recalls going to see 'Saw' with his friends in a year when Neal was already a full-blown adult. Regardless of the reason, both Neal and Chris think this trend needs to stop, and they hope that once people readjust to going out in public sometime later this decade, they will stop taking photos of movies while they are in movies. Elsewhere in the world, school districts in Florida are flagging 'Romeo and Juliet' for inappropriate content. Houston, Texas, is closing school libraries and turning them into detention centers. Looks like it's back-to-censorship time. Sharyn Vane joins Neal for a semi-annual discussion of all the ways that school districts are restricting access to books for teenagers. One district is even making it illegal to check books out for yourself if you're under 18 years old. We're not just arguing about 'Gender Queer' anymore. BFG will always be on top of these issues. And we'll always be on top of 'Twisted Metal,' the Peacock adaptation of the 1990's apocalyptic road-rage video game series. Scott Gold is all over this topic, he loves Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz, who bring a kind of sweet romance to a Mad Max-end-of-the world scenario. And Scott and Neal have nothing but praise for "Sweet Tooth," the crazed blood-soaked clown who rules over Las Vegas and may or may not be based on either Bugsy Siegel or Britney Spears. Regardless, all hail Sweet Tooth, thanks for making August a little more fun.Enjoy the show!

If you've listened to the CONSUMED podcast for any length of time, you'll be familiar with the name Chris Lambert. He has edited the show for years, but you probably know him better for his own project, the podcast Your Own Backyard, about the disappearance of Kristin Smart. (If you haven't listened to Your Own Backyard, which was the #1 podcast in the world for some time, do yourself a favor and take a week or so to binge the whole series.) With the trials of Paul Flores and Ruben Flores over, and Paul Flores sentenced to prison, Chris is busy writing and recording the final episode of that project. But he graciously agreed to sit down with me to talk, not so much about the case itself and all the accolades the podcast has received, but to discuss his creative process. Chris has been a professional musician and singer-songwriter for many years, and has 11 albums under his belt, so he knows a thing or two about how to create something artfully. We chatted about those, about his choices for writing the music for the podcast, and about sequencing when it came to telling Kristin and the Smart family's story. And because this is technically a food podcast, YES, we talked about food, too. Chris is a local boy, but has spent a lot of time in Louisiana, so he shares about his relationship with southern food. Random, I know, but this conversation sheds light on what it takes to see a window of opportunity, calculate the angle, and make the leap — just like so many farmers, chefs, winemakers, brewers, and entrepreneurs do in the food and beverage industry every day.
