Oh, was the sound crappy last week? Well, we've fixed that. New mic! Holy smokes! You're really going to like this. It's so much better. And now that we're done with Newburyport Literary Festival and Independent Bookstore Day, it's all systems go heading into summer, and we've got lots of books to talk about, including: - "The Lion Women of Tehran," by Marjan Kamali, who was the star at Newburyport, and who really captured the audience. - "Endling," by Maria Reva, a meta sort of novel set in Ukraine and grappling with the Russian invasion and how to make sense of it. - "Heartwood," by Amity Gaige, which Hannah started and stopped and ended up finishing, but isn't convinced is really a "thriller." Also, Amity's understanding of Maine seems ... limited. - "The River Has Roots," by Amal El-Mohtar, which is more of a novella, but is really pretty, and a lovely addition to the faerie canon. And it really gets the musical portion of the plot right. - "The Doorman," by Chris Pavone, which is a little different, not an international spy thriller, and shares some qualities with "Only Murders in the Building," but isn't, like, funny at all. Some twists and turns, though. Next time, Sam reads some blockbusters and Hannah gets literary. Maybe.
Chris Pavone's 2022 novel is an international thriller set in Portugal. Newlyweds Ariel Price and John Wright are combining a honeymoon with his consulting appointments in Lisbon. The storyline centers around Ariel's desperate search for her husband and the bureaucratic red tape she goes through to be able to provide the ransom. As Ariel uses her past encounters to finance the ransom, some surprising secrets are revealed. The book is intriguing and hard to put down as we discover more information and have more questions. The wine we are enjoying is a Lisboa white blend that has mineral notes and a fresh cool taste … the type of wine you could enjoy at the beach. The grapes used in making this wine are Vital, Fernão Pires and Arinto, just to name a few of the 145 grape varieties in Portugal. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/readingbetweenthewines/support

Power, politics, narcissism, and revenge … yes, we cover it all in this wonderful discussion with Chris Pavone about TWO NIGHTS IN LISBON, his newest international thriller! We talk about fame – including its burdens, dangers, and pitfalls. Are people aware of the price they may have to pay for that lifestyle? What happens when the cost is you? What happens when people have more fame and power than they have maturity? We talk about societal pressures, and the addictive nature of affirmation through social media attention … as fleeting as it may be. We talk about courage, hope, and regret. We also discuss “the system,” and feeling like it might be stacked against you. Can you use unethical means to right those wrongs? Doesn't everyone have a justification for wrongdoing? Are some excuses better, or more legitimate, than others? Are there objective rights and wrongs, or is morality subjective? Who doesn't tell lies, especially white lies? And wait until you hear our discussion about truth.

Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

When The Stars Go Dark: Book By Paula McClain “Paula McLain, already established as the master of the historical novel, now explodes into crime fiction with a richly satisfying, tremendously moving mystery—haunting, poignant, lyrical, urgent.”—Chris Pavone, author of The Paris Diversion “Fantastically propulsive and deeply atmospheric, this novel grabs you from the very first page. Paula McLain has proven to be a masterful storyteller no matter the genre.”—Aimee Molloy, author of The Perfect Mother “This melancholy but gripping tale uses backstory and flashbacks to propel the mystery forward. Part suspense, part self-discovery tale, this first attempt at crime fiction from historical fiction author McLain (The Paris Wife) is hard to resist. Fans of the author's other works will not be disappointed.”—Library Journal Website: https://gobookmart.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

Chris Pavone "The Paris Diversion": American expat Kate Moore drops her kids at the international school, makes her rounds of chores, and meets her husband Dexter at their regular café: a leisurely start to a normal day, St-Germain-des-Prés. Across the Seine, tech CEO Hunter Forsyth stands on his balcony, wondering why his police escort just departed, and frustrated that his cell service has cut out; Hunter has important calls to make, not all of them technically legal. And on the nearby rue de Rivoli, Mahmoud Khalid climbs out of an electrician's van and elbows his way into the crowded courtyard of the world's largest museum. He sets down his metal briefcase, and removes his windbreaker. That's when people start to scream. Everyone has big plans for the day. Dexter is going to make a small fortune, finally digging himself out of a deep financial hole, via an extremely risky investment. Hunter is going to make a huge fortune, with a major corporate acquisition that will send his company's stock soaring. Kate has less ambitious plans: preparations for tonight's dinner party—one of those homemaker obligations she still hasn't embraced, even after a half-decade of this life—and an uneventful workday at the Paris Substation, the clandestine cadre of operatives that she's been running, not entirely successfully, increasingly convinced that every day could be the last of her career. But every day is also a fresh chance to prove her own relevance, never more so than during today's momentous events. And Mahmoud? He is planning to die today. And he won't be the only one.
And on the nearby rue de Rivoli, Mahmoud Khalid climbs out of an electrician’s van and elbows his way into the crowded courtyard of the world’s largest museum. He sets down his metal briefcase, and removes his windbreaker. That’s when people start to scream. Everyone has big plans for the day. We get permission to be our most geeky selves from the one and only Adam Savage. Then cookbook editor turned best-selling thriller writer Chris Pavone explains how 9/11 inspired his latest novel.
Veteran New York editor and bestselling author Chris Pavone stepped into the Interrogation Room to answer a few questions. His debut novel, THE EXPATS, won both the Edgar and the Anthony awards for Best First Novel and is translated into 20 languages. His next two books, THE ACCIDENT and THE TRAVELERS, are both bestsellers, and THE TRAVELERS is being developed for film. Chris grew up in Brooklyn, graduated from Cornell University, and worked in editorial publishing positions for nearly two decades. When his wife accepted a position in Luxembourg, his family moved abroad and Chris focused on raising their sons and writing his debut novel. In this episode, Chris and host Gavin Reese discuss his new release, called THE PARIS DIVERSION; how his 9/11 experience inspired his writing; creating convincing and relatable female protagonists as a man; and why he doesn't have favorite authors and characters.
