Solo parenting one child is a big job. Add a second baby to the mix, and do it all without a co-parent, and everything shifts. In this episode, I'm joined by Randi Maves, a solo mom by choice to two boys, four years apart. Randi wouldn't trade this life for anything, but she's honest about how intense it can be juggling two different stages of parenting on her own. From navigating daycare drop-offs and picky eaters to handling preschooler meltdowns while sleep-training a newborn, Randi gets honest about what the daily juggle really looks like. She talks about the tools and support systems that are saving her sanity right now, including her decision to hire an au pair, and the emotional process of adjusting to life as a solo mom of two. We're also diving into Randi's fertility journey with IVF at 40+, including the heartbreak of getting no viable embryos, the decision to transfer her one mosaic embryo, and the deep trust it took to move forward. If you're thinking about having a second child as an SMBC, already in the thick of solo motherhood, or just wondering what this path can look like, Randi's story is a beautiful mix of honesty, resilience, and real-life logistics. In this episode on solo parenting two kids after 40, we talk about:How her mom's diagnosis sparked her decision to become a momWhat it was like to move across the country with a baby in towWhat shifted her perspective on having a second child soloThe highs and lows of IVF as a single woman in her 40sWhat it's really like to solo parent two kids in different phases of lifeHer approach to building a support team, including daycare and live-in helpThe emotional weight of parenting without a partner, and why acknowledgment mattersHer mindset around letting “future Randi” handle “future problems”Resources mentioned in this episode:HBO Documentary First Comes Love (2013)Facebook group ‘My Perfect Mosaic Embryo'
As we read through these stories of the Hebrew people ignoring God, turning to pagan idols, and worshiping a false god like Baal, it's easy to spot where these ancient people went astray. We would never worship a shiny baby cow. We wouldn't ignore a prophet with a good track record of rightly speaking God's Word. We will always follow great advice. I hope that last one is true. Scripture has some exceptionally wise words that are as relevant now as they were in ancient times. Psalm 119:105 tells us, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Join Pastor Chuck Schlie in this week's episode for three simple words from our God that will keep you on the right path and guide you to life in His great name!If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. Israel is a mess. We already know that, but it's going from bad to worse. Israel is divided and the northern region (also called Israel) has fallen. Southern Judah has a faithful king who puts God first, but trouble persists, and God's chosen people are in a battle for survival. In his message, Ryan Pfendler examines three themes: Identity in God: Like Israel, we are called to find our identity in being children of the one true God, rather than seeking validation from worldly standards. Consequences of Idolatry: Israel's repeated idol worship led to their downfall. Ryan urges us to reflect on the "false gods" in our own lives, such as wealth or success, and to remember that true protection and peace come from God alone. God's Unfailing Love: Despite Israel's failures, God did not abandon them, and He will not forget us, even when we fall. God's love is steadfast, and He is always ready to welcome us back with open arms.If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. The desire to share life with a partner doesn't just disappear when we choose to start our families on our own. And it doesn't have to. Today's new episode is a beautiful reminder that both things can be true: you can want motherhood and partnership, and you don't have to give up one to have the other. At 35, Erin Russell was faced with the hard realization that her family line would end with her if she didn't pursue parenthood soon, so she started seriously considering solo motherhood. But right as she was preparing to begin fertility treatments, life threw her a curveball — she met someone.Erin was clear about what she wanted and gave the relationship space to grow. But when it became obvious they weren't aligned on having kids, she made the powerful decision to walk away. She ordered donor sperm the very next day.Becoming a mom didn't erase Erin's hope of sharing life with a partner. Just two months after her son was born, she started dating again — not out of pressure or urgency, but as a way to reconnect with herself, enjoy adult time, and stay open to love. Now that her son is two and she's happily in a relationship that feels like the right fit, Erin reflects on what it's been like to still want partnership as a solo mom by choice, and how she's navigating love, parenting, and a changing sense of identity all at once.In this episode, we talk about:How Erin knew it was time to pursue solo motherhoodThe challenges of navigating IUI, IVF, and insurance hurdlesWhy "just surviving" the newborn stage isn't enough, and how building a support system made all the differenceThe guilt and reality of sending your baby to daycare as a solo momDating as a solo mom: why Erin started early, how she set her own pace, and what she looked for in a partnerHow she's weaving her new relationship into her solo mom lifeAnd why the grief of doing it alone doesn't just disappear once your baby arrivesWhether you're considering solo motherhood, already parenting, or wondering if dating might fit into your life someday, Erin's story is full of honesty, hope, and real-world encouragement for wherever you are on the path.Want to connect with Erin Russell?Follow Erin on InstagramCheck out Erin's writingRead Erin's article on SMBCs (featuring me as an interviewee!)
"The Story" continues with the story of Elijah from 1 Kings 18. The prophet Elijah stood boldly against the prophets of Baal, demonstrating unwavering faith in God amidst overwhelming opposition. The Dangers of Compromise: Pastor Jim reminded us of the dangers of compromising our values, drawing parallels between King Solomon's alliances and our modern-day temptations to forsake our principles for perceived gains. The Role of Prophets: We learned about the crucial role of prophets in ancient Israel, who spoke truth to power and guided the people back to God, emphasizing that genuine faith requires courage and conviction.Elijah's Bold Stand: The highlight was Elijah's challenge on Mount Carmel, where his faith in God was vindicated through a miraculous display, teaching us that true faith often requires us to stand firm even when the odds seem against us.If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. AMDG. Do you worry about finding a strong community for your children outside the home? Homeschooling moms Dee-dee and Krysten join the Kolbecast to share about their homeschool communities. Filled with practical advice and anecdotes from their years of experience, Dee-dee and Krysten's conversation makes building a thriving community feel accessible to anyone. Dee-dee started her own homeschooling group after moving to an area that didn't have a strong homeschooling community. What started as a small gathering in Dee-dee's household snowballed into a huge community of homeschool families. “The most successful groups are the ones that grow organically,” Deedee notes. Her homeschool group now offers copious enrichment activities such as drama, theatre, and a brown bag lunch program for the needy in the community. Krysten runs the largest homeschool group on a military base in the nation. Krysten addresses the ins and outs of running a homeschool non-profit organization, from cautionary tales to inspiring successes in evangelization. “God will open the doors that need to be open,” Krysten says. “Lean into what God is calling you to do.” Related Kolbecast episodes: 214 A Long View with Charles & Dee-dee Mihaliak 155 Mission Intent: Pathways to Serve and 156 Mission Intent: Formed to Serve with and about homeschooling military families 105 Not Just for Special Occasions addressing socialization 3 Dramatic Arts and 73 Through Beauty and Technology with Dolores Mihaliak 208 A Mosaic of Experience and 246 Orientation toward the Eternal with Kolbe Academy alumnus Charlie Mihaliak Relevant links: School & Co-op Partnerships with Kolbe Academy Adoro Te, the homeschool group that Dee-dee and her family helped found Cultivating Friendships and Enriching Social Activities for Homeschool Students from the Kolbe Academy Help Center Have questions or suggestions for future episodes or a story of your own experience that you'd like to share? Wow, those Israelites sure know how to ruin a good thing! Their 100+ year streak of relative stability under the kings they asked for ends in (spoiler alert) a kingdom torn in two. How did things get so bad? Well, we learned last week about Solomon's gradual slide into idol worship. His reign as king that started out with so much promise ended in catastrophe for Israel when he turned on the one true God. It's the same trap we fall into today. No, we don't build literal temples to false gods, but we certainly prioritize our idols above our God and separate ourselves from Him. Pastor Chuck Schlie takes a look at the big mess Israel has made but also takes a look at the seeds of redemption among the destruction in this week's episode. If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. Expanding your family as a single mother by choice isn't always easy — but many solo moms desire more than one child, and today's conversation is a beautiful example of how it can unfold.Lauren — a returning guest and seasoned SMBC — shares her journey from welcoming her first daughter to expanding her family with twins, all in just a few years. Along the way, she navigated fertility treatments, postpartum health challenges, and the daily demands of solo parenting... while never losing sight of her dream to grow her family despite her fertility challenges. As you might know, I've been thinking a lot lately about whether to have a second child as a solo mom — so it was such a gift to sit down with Lauren and talk through all the emotional, logistical, and real-life factors that come into play when making a decision like this.Whether you're actively considering another child or just curious about what life looks like with multiple little ones as a solo mom, Lauren's story is a powerful reminder that you can create the family you dream of.Inside the episode, we talk about:How Lauren managed a twin pregnancy while caring for a young babyThe emotional and practical shifts that come with expanding your family soloBuilding a village: how childcare, therapy, and trusted support made it possibleHandling outside reactions to being a solo mom of multiple childrenTalking to young kids about being donor-conceived and having donor siblingsFinding moments of joy and recharging amid the chaosWhat factors to consider when thinking about adding to your family as a solo momAnd more!Listen to Lauren & Jess on Season 1, Episode 16 of The SGC PodcastConnect with Lauren on Instagram
How awesome would it be for God to grant you anything you wanted, and then give you EVEN MORE than what you asked for? That's just the situation King Solomon finds himself in. King David has died and his son inherits the throne of a nation with the slogan "no worries" minted on their coins (figuratively speaking). It's good to be king...and good to be this king's subject. Their land is peaceful. Prosperity reigns and riches abound. Moreover, their ruler is renowned for his smarts and shares his wisdom in soundbites they can all understand. So why does the party end? In this case, the enemy is within, and it's one we're all too familiar with. Jesus is the most prominent, dominant figure of all history. He rightly owns this title due to the fact that He kicked in death's door, choked death out, made death tap out and cry uncle—then Jesus rose from the dead and has given eternal life to all who would say yes to Him.For this week's Outline and Community Group questions, download our app or visit hillsidefellowship.org, click on Resources, and find today's sermon.
Healing Our Hurts What if your past pain is still shaping your future? This message is about healing—not just the obvious hurts, but the hidden wounds we carry through life. Betrayal, grief, disappointment, shame—these don't fade with time. But the cross and the empty tomb tell a better story. Jesus showed us the way: He acknowledged the hurt, let go of the right to retaliate, prayed for His enemies, made room for reconciliation, and trusted God with the outcome. If He carried our wounds to the cross and walked out of the grave—scars and all—maybe your pain has a purpose too. And maybe healing will start today. Luke 23:26-56 Discussion topics Icebreaker - When you hear the word hurt, what's the first story, memory, or feeling that comes to mind? Luke 22:44 – Jesus in the Garden - What does this moment teach us about acknowledging our pain instead of suppressing it? Is there a hurt in your life that you've avoided naming or dealing with? 5 Steps to Healing - Of the 5 Steps to Healing shared in the sermon (Acknowledge the Hurt, Forfeit the Right to Punish, Pray for Them, Be Open to Reconciliation, Trust God with Your Future), Which step is hardest for you right now? Why? Which one do you feel God is inviting you to take next? From Pain to Purpose - Jesus rose with scars, not open wounds. What would it look like for your hurt to become a scar—no longer painful, but still purposeful? Is there anyone in your Community Group that needs to take their next step by being water baptized? Check out our other audio series and video playlists that can help you find Jesus in every moment and then discover what's next

I recently wrapped up one of the most unpredictable SMBC retreats I've ever hosted, and I'm still unpacking all the lessons it had to teach me. This solo episode is a behind-the-scenes look at what happens when things go completely off-script, and how self-compassion, surrender, and unexpected moments of connection carried me through. This isn't your typical retreat recap. It's a story about what happens when you let go of the plan and lean into trust, even when things go sideways. As someone who talks a lot about self-compassion and mindset, this experience gave me a real-time opportunity to practice what I preach. If you've ever wondered what it's like to attend a retreat with SGC—or you've found yourself navigating curveballs on your SMBC journey—this one's for you.I'm sharing:The story of a retreat that went wildly off course (and what happened next)How curveballs became invitations for growth, trust, and connectionThe power of self-compassion when things don't go as plannedThe surprising kindness of strangersWhat this experience taught me as a solo mom, solopreneur, and human beingAnd the quiet magic that happens when we stop trying to control it all.

When was the last time you committed adultery and arranged the killing of your mistress's spouse to conceal the affair? I imagine the answer is "never." After reading David's story, you might be feeling pretty good about the severity of your sins. After all, you've never murdered a guy so he doesn't find out you're having a baby with his wife. Your sins are bad, but at least they're not that level of bad. Admit it...you've had this thought. We all have. There's a problem with this way of thinking that Pastor Chuck Schlie will explain in this week's episode. We have no reason to feel proud if our sins don't mirror David's. His sin is bold, but so is his contrition. David's story is both cautionary and instructive. If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. The city of St. Paul has averted a garbage pick-up crisis, for now. St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter declared a three-day state of emergency that allows the city's new garbage hauler to begin service Tuesday, as scheduled. The dispute between the city and community members centers on whether the garbage hauler, FCC Environmental Services, can use a lot it purchased to maintain and fuel its trucks. Carter's declaration temporarily suspends zoning regulations to allow trash collection while a zoning dispute is settled.Meg Duhr is the president of the West 7th/Fort Road Federation, which is the neighborhood where the lot is located. She joined Minnesota Now to talk about the dispute and what she thinks the city needs to do to make improvements to trash collection.

It's like David vs. Goliath. You've likely heard this metaphor used any time an underdog goes up against something (or someone) they have little chance of defeating. It's an archetype of victory against all odds. It's also a story about trusting God to see you through your battles. That part gets left out of the cultural narrative, but we're going to explore it in this week's episode when we meet the future King David. As a shepherd boy that nobody would choose as their sovereign, David proves that outward appearances don't matter to a God who looks at the heart. Take a listen as Pastor Jim Mueller explains more.If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. Has there ever been a time in your life when you knew what God wanted you to do, but you did the opposite? Taking His law as a suggestion (instead of, well, law), you went ahead and did it your way. Obedience isn't our strong suit. God can certainly work through us when we do what is contrary to His will for our lives. But imagine how much sweeter the relationship with your Savior would be if you took the words "thy will be done" to heart! In obedience, there is so much God can and will do through you. It's not about being bossed around; it's about opening yourself up to the life that Jesus wants for you. We see the Israelites going their own way (again), and God giving them what they want. There's a lot for us to learn from their mistake and we will hear more about it in this week's episode with Pastor Chuck Schlie. If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions. As we continue our journey through “The Story”, Pastor Jim Mueller shared insights from the Book of Ruth, highlighting the remarkable story of Ruth and Naomi and what their faith and resilience can teach us today. Ruth's unwavering faith and loyalty shows us how faith can guide us through life's darkest moments, transforming bitterness into hope. Ruth's declaration, "Your people will be my people and your God, my God," challenges us to rethink our definitions of family and community. It encourages us to embrace those around us, fostering bonds that go beyond bloodlines and cultural differences. God works through our brokenness, using imperfect vessels to fulfill His perfect plan. Ruth's journey from widowhood to becoming part of Jesus's lineage illustrates that our past does not define our future with God!If you'd like to dig deeper, check out these discussion questions.
