Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. **Tai-Ex opening ** The Tai-Ex opened down 30-points this morning from last Friday's close, at 14,108 on turnover of $1.8-billion N-T. The market gained ground last Friday, on the final trading day of 2022, closing up 52.67-points, but turnover remained weak as foreign institutional investors were away for the seasonal holiday period. The Tai-Ex closed the year at 14,138-points, and that was down 22.4-per cent from the end of 2021, pushing down market capitalization to 44-trillion N-T. Data shows the local main board for whole of 2022 slumped on the back of geopolitical tensions, aggressive interest rate hikes by the U-S Federal Reserve and weaker demand in the electronics sector in the second half of the year. **New Round of Reservations for Coronavirus Vaccines to Begin in Taipei ** The Taipei Department of Health says those wishing to get a coronavirus vaccine can now make an appointment. The new round of reservations for the 73,000 available doses is now open through 9PM Friday on Taipei's vaccination reservation system. City health officials say the shots to be administered from between January 9-th and 15-th. The Moderna vaccines available will be the standard vaccine for people aged six months to 11 years old and the bivalent vaccines offered as a booster against the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants for children aged six to 11 years old and those aged 12 and older. **US Divided Congress to Begin New Session ** A new session of the US Congress will begin on Tuesday with a return of a divided government. Nick Harper reports from Washington. **German Village Scuffles Over Mine Expansion ** Scuffles have broken out outside a village in western Germany that is to be razed to allow the expansion of a coal mine. German news agency dpa reported that activists on Monday threw fireworks, bottles and stones at police outside the village of Luetzerath before the situation calmed down and officers pulled back. Protesters previously had set up a burning barricade (路障), and one glued his hand to the access road. The hamlet is to be demolished to expand the Garzweiler lignite mine. Activists have been living in houses abandoned by former residents. The county administration has authorized police to clear the village from Jan. 10-th. **Mexico Elects First Female Chief Justice ** Mexico's Supreme Court has elected the first female chief justice in its history. Justice Norma Lucia Pina was sworn in (宣誓就職) for her four-year term at the head of the 11-member court, pledging to maintain the independence of the country's highest court. As chief justice, Pina will also head the entire judicial branch. The 6-5 vote by her fellow ministers Monday came despite pressure by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on the ministers. Lopez Obrador had backed another female justice, Yasmin Esquivel, for the top post. That was the I.C.R.T. news, Check in again tomorrow for our simplified version of the news, uploaded every day in the afternoon. Enjoy the rest of your day, I'm _____.

More than 800 people in Uganda have received counterfeit COVID-19 vaccines, officials said Wednesday.Police, Health Ministry officials and the State House Health Monitoring Unit have arrested two nurses for injecting people with fake shots and issuing fake certificates. The doctor who was leading the operation, however, is on the run.Addressing a news conference in the capital Kampala, Dr. Wallen Naamara, the head of the health unit, said the network duped many people and companies."It is unfortunate that some medical workers are administering fake COVID-19 jabs to unsuspecting people. We did undercover work and arrested two nurses in the act," she said.According to her, those injected were mostly from companies that paid 200,000 Ugandan shillings ($54) for the vaccination of each of their workers.A representative of the Uganda National Medical Stores, a government-owned organization mandated to obtain, store and distribute medicines, said the items seized from the nurses were not procured from them. The drugs did not have government labeling, as required by law, the representative added. With 543 new infections and 34 related deaths, the East African country has so far confirmed 79,979 COVID-19 cases and 1,023 fatalities. It received 964,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in March, and over 800,000 people have since been vaccinated. Since January 2020, Australia has recorded less than 30'000 COVID infections and less than 1000 deaths. What are we doing that other places aren't? The first coronavirus vaccine jabs have already gone into the arms of people here in the UK, as Britain this week became the first country in the world to actually deploy a vaccine which had completed all its clinical trials and been signed off by the regulator. But there remain lots of questions about the vaccine – how has it been made so fast, can we be sure it is safe, who should get it first, and can Christians be given it without compromising on their religious convictions? Listen to previous episodes on covid vaccines here: Part 1 - https://shows.acast.com/matters-of-life-and-death/episodes/coronavirus-vaccines Part 2 - https://shows.acast.com/matters-of-life-and-death/episodes/coronavirus-vaccines-part-2 Read John's article on vaccines and Christian ethics here - https://johnwyatt.com/2020/10/08/article-coronavirus-vaccines-and-christian-ethics/ At the bottom is a document which has more detailed information on which particular vaccines have used which particular cell lines which may have ethical concerns, produced by the pro-life research centre the Charlotte Lozier Institute. John has also put together a document on his website tackling some of the frequently asked questions about the vaccine - https://johnwyatt.com/2020/12/21/faq-coronavirus-vaccines-frequently-asked-questions/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Dr. Seth Toback, Vice President for Clinical Development of Coronavirus Vaccines at NOVAVAX, Inc, offers an inside look at the amazing work being done to produce vaccines for COVID-19. He talks at length about the science, innovation, and safety of the process, and the life-saving products that will likely result.
UMMC begins a stage of clinical trials for a coronavirus vaccine. Then, the open enrollment period under the Affordable Care Act has begun. But the healthcare program's constitutionality is being questioned at the highest level by the Trump Administration. Plus, lawmakers hold a hearing to consider options for year-round school.Segment 1:Pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer says an early peek at its data suggests the vaccine it is developing may be 90% effective at preventing COVID-19. The interim analysis, from independent data monitors, looked at 94 infections recorded so far in a study that has enrolled nearly 44,000 people. However, the announcement doesn't mean a vaccine is imminent, and trials of other vaccines continue - including at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where a trial begins this week. Dr. Richard Summers, Vice Chancellor of Research shares more about vaccine development with our Michael Guidry, starting with the phase three results of the Pfizer trials. Segment 2:Open enrollment for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act began earlier this month. 99,000 Mississippi residents receive their coverage through the ACA. But those Mississippians could be at risk of losing healthcare coverage if the U.S. Supreme Court rules the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional. Today, justices will hear oral arguments for and against the health insurance program. The Trump Administration is seeking to end the ACA with a decision expected next year. Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney says those in need of coverage can sign up this year, but is concerned about the ramifications if the program is struck down.Segment 3:Mississippi legislators are considering modifying the K-12 school year to an alternate schedule. Yesterday, the Senate Education Committee heard from experts about what year-round education would look like in Mississippi. The schedule removes the traditional summer break, and creates several smaller two or three week breaks throughout the year. Corinth School District has used an extended calendar for 5 years. Superintendent Edward Childress told the committee the decision began by assessing the district's goals. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We received a fascinating question from a listener after our last episode on vaccines, picking up on the competing and perhaps contradictory philosophies behind the anti-vax movement. So we decided to respond to their question and thoughts with a special bonus episode looking over this issue and other developments in coronavirus vaccines since. You will probably want to listen to the main episode on vaccines first here: https://shows.acast.com/matters-of-life-and-death/episodes/coronavirus-vaccines And we subsequently made a third vaccines episode - https://shows.acast.com/matters-of-life-and-death/episodes/coronavirus-vaccines-part-3 John has also put together a document on his website tackling some of the frequently asked questions about the vaccine - https://johnwyatt.com/2020/12/21/faq-coronavirus-vaccines-frequently-asked-questions/ We're really interested in hearing more questions and comments from you - if you have something you would like us to discuss or respond to, please email mattersoflifeanddeathpodcast@gmail.com. There are about 40 different potential covid vaccines already being tested on humans, with almost a hundred more at earlier stages of development in the lab. The delivery of a vaccine is seen by many as the silver bullet which could end the pandemic for good. But they are more morally complex than we might at first assume. Join us as we sift through the ethical questions around clinical trials, testing vaccines on humans, how they can be most equitably distributed, and even what material they are made with. John's article on the ethics of vaccines, which includes a discussion of the rights and wrongs of using tissue from aborted fetuses to develop vaccines, can be found here: https://johnwyatt.com/2020/10/08/article-coronavirus-vaccines-and-christian-ethics/ He has also put together a document on his website tackling some of the frequently asked questions about the vaccine - https://johnwyatt.com/2020/12/21/faq-coronavirus-vaccines-frequently-asked-questions/ You can listen to the next two episodes which also discuss vaccines here: Part 2 - https://shows.acast.com/matters-of-life-and-death/episodes/coronavirus-vaccines-part-2 Part 3 - https://shows.acast.com/matters-of-life-and-death/episodes/coronavirus-vaccines-part-3 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
