Welcome to Day 2267 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Wisdom Nuggets – Proverbs 18:9-16 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2267 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2267 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. In today's Wisdom Nugget, I will guide you through the vast landscapes of biblical wisdom. It's a pleasure to have you join me on this journey. Today, our exploration takes us into the profound insights of Proverbs 18:9-16 from the New Living Translation. Pause… As we delve into these verses, let's seek the timeless wisdom that can guide us in our speech, our attitude toward learning, and our reliance on the Lord for strength. Pause… Without further delay, let's strap on our hiking boots and dive into the wisdom of Proverbs. Verse 9: “A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things.” This verse draws a stark comparison between laziness and destructive behavior. How can we overcome laziness and cultivate a diligent spirit? Cultivate Diligence: Recognize the destructive nature of laziness. Cultivate diligence by setting goals, managing time effectively, and approaching tasks with a proactive mindset. Pause… Now, let's explore verse 10. “The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.” This verse emphasizes the strength and safety found in the name of the Lord. How can we rely on the Lord as our strong fortress in times of trouble? Rely on the Lord's Strength: Recognize the strength and safety found in the name of the Lord. Rely on the Lord as your strong fortress by turning to Him in prayer, seeking His guidance, and finding refuge in His promises. Pause… Verse 11 speaks to the power of wealth and its limitations. “The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety.” This verse highlights the misconception of relying on wealth as the ultimate defense. How can we maintain a balanced perspective on wealth and security? Seek True Security in the Lord: Recognize the limitations of wealth as a defense. Seek true security in the Lord by acknowledging His sovereignty, trusting in His provision, and understanding that ultimate security comes from a relationship with Him. Pause… Now, let's explore verse 12. “Haughtiness goes before destruction; humility precedes honor.” This verse draws a clear contrast between haughtiness and humility, highlighting their respective outcomes. How can we cultivate humility and avoid the destructive path of haughtiness? Cultivate Humility: Recognize the destructive nature of haughtiness. Cultivate humility by acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses, valuing others, and embracing a teachable spirit. Pause… Now, let's turn our attention to verse 13. “Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.” This verse highlights the folly of speaking without first understanding the facts. How can we...

Hi Friends, My tongue gets me in trouble. How about you? The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21 NIV “Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions. Wise words are like deep waters; wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook. Fools' words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating. The mouths of fools are their ruin; they trap themselves with their lips. Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction. The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” Proverbs 18:21 NLT The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences. James 3:1-11 NIV Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one's life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
Welcome to Day 2089 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom The Book of Proverbs – Chapter 18 – Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2089 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2089 of our Trek. Establishing good habits is imperative for living a Godly life and one habit I have practiced nearly every day for the past 45+ years of my adult life is to read the chapter in the book of Proverbs that corresponds to the day of the month. This single habit has been the catalyst for gaining wisdom and creating a living legacy. Adopting this habit can do the same for your life. The realization that God's Wisdom is the only true wisdom drives me to seek God's wisdom each day, and there is no better way to do this than to meditate on God's book of Wisdom. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. So we are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today I will read Proverbs 18. The Book of Proverbs - Chapter 18 18 Unfriendly people care only about themselves; they lash out at common sense. 2 Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions. 3 Doing wrong leads to disgrace, and scandalous behavior brings contempt. 4 Wise words are like deep waters; wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook. 5 It is not right to acquit the guilty or deny justice to the innocent. 6 Fools' words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating. 7 The mouths of fools are their ruin; they trap themselves with their lips. 8 Rumors are dainty morsels that sink deep into one's heart. 9 A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things. 10 The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe. 11 The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety. 12 Haughtiness goes before destruction; humility precedes honor. 13 Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. 14 The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit? 15 Intelligent people are always ready to learn. Their ears are open for knowledge. 16 Giving a gift can open doors; it gives access to important people! 17 The first to speak in court sounds right— until the cross-examination begins. 18 Flipping a...

Walter Dickey recently retired from a long and distinguished professional life at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Among many other accomplishments and experiences, Walter was a tenured law professor; head of the Department of Corrections in Wisconsin; Chair of the Wisconsin athletic board; representative to NCAA and Big Ten Conference, and deputy athletic director. He's published extensively and shaped his fields in many positive ways. But Walter's much more than these achievements or positions. He's been a son, brother, husband, father, friend, colleague, and mentor. He's a man with broad experience, deep perspective. Walter says that he never spends much time thinking about his career or having been a leader, but in this three part series, we examine how this legendary UW leader has indeed lived an interesting and impactful life of leadership. In part 1, Walter described the time that he and his wife Mary spent in Ghana, just after he'd completed law school. He highlighted some of the impacts of that time in their lives and how it contributed to his development as an observer of the world. Walter then described the importance of partnership in his journey and he provided insight into how one of his key partners, Professor Frank Remington, went about mentoring with humility and generosity. Over the years it's been a tremendous honor and privilege for me to get to learn from Walter – so learning more about his story was a very special opportunity for me. We discussed: 1. Deciding to go to Ghana – “the adventure of our lives” and the “turning point of our lives.” 2. Not being part of the “American Embassy crowd” in Ghana. 3. Living in Ghana: heat, a coup, grocery shopping, time, food, etc. 4. Being an observer. 5. “We were completely reliant on each other.” 6. Walter and Mary in Ghana: “We developed confidence in ourselves. And we developed trust and confidence in people around us.” 7. Returning to the U.S: No money, a Ford Pinto, a broadened perspective, and an uncertain future. 8. Why every American should take advantages of opportunities to live abroad. 9. “I've never thought of myself as having a career.” 10. Learning to live amid doubt and uncertainty in a condition of not knowing (Shakespeare). 11. Contrasting Oedipus & Socrates coming to a fork in the road. Socrates reflected and considered where the two roads might go. 12. Mary: “As the future rises up before us, we'll figure it out.” 13. “Carefully observing the world and people around me. And then figuring out how to best proceed.” 14. The raw materials of leadership: observing and active imagination (and reading). 15. What Walter learned from reading as a youngster: the triumph of virtue after struggle. Idealism. 16. C.S. Lewis: reading teaches us that we're not alone. 17. “Solving problems is fun. Spouting off theoretical things isn't, at least to me.” 18. Working for UW Law Professor Frank Remington, who was “incredibly intelligent, observant, and humble.” 19. Diagnostic interviews: “a legal physical.” 20. Frank Remington as a mentor. “Humility was his hallmark.”

Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. ~ Proverbs 18:13 (NLT) When I was working at the City of Salem (before I entered ministry), one of the things the library department hosted were author talks. These were generally pretty cool, and featured very well-known authors of some of the most popular books in the nation. I love that the talks weren't just limited to those who sold fiction (their books were made up stories), but also invited authors to speak who were experts in a particular field and had written books about it. One of my favorites was an author named Mary Roach. She writes on all kinds of crazy topics, but her stuff is fascinating. The next time you're on Amazon or at a library, check out some of her stuff. Maybe you'll find it fascinating too. One of the coolest things people like Mary get to do is research. She flies all over the world, investigates things, talks to others who are experts in a particular field of study, and learns as much as she can before she even sits down to start writing her book. In fact, the book doesn't even start to take any kind of shape – no outline or even premise – until the research is completed and it all makes sense in the author's head. Only then does the author begin to write about topics that can be intriguing, but also accurate. Unfortunately, in this world, the idea of completing research before actually sharing one's ideas is a lost art. We often times speak as though we are an expert in a certain area, yet have no idea what we are talking about. Even worse, we won't let those who know more than we do – those who have gained wisdom in that area – convince us otherwise. Our society is quickly becoming so close-minded that the sharing of truth has become near impossible sometimes. Truth has become what we think, not what is factual. King Solomon knew a thing or two about a few things. Well, maybe a lot of things. He was the wisest man who ever lived. He saw this ideological train-wreck coming when he wrote our verse today, “Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.” In other words, we are called to listen to others. Learn from them. Seek wisdom. Seek knowledge. And, no, learning from only those who think like you already doesn't count. Find those who have a different view. Seek to understand. Only then is true wisdom gained.
First it was Justin Trudeau weighing in on India's internal matters. Now, it is Biden's Ambassador-at-large for International Religious Freedom spouting forth on the HIjab controversy. Rashad Hussain will not speak about the atrocities committed elsewhere on minorities but wants to poke his nose in India's internal affairs. It behooves Biden to rein in such loudmouths, says Sree Iyer. #JoeBiden #HijabControversy #RashadHussain #India #Karnataka #HijabRow #MEAIndia #SreeIyer

SHOW NOTES: In Podcast Episode 145, “Practicing the Art of Christian Diplomacy,” Kim discusses the example of diplomacy modeled by Abigail in her interchange with David. In which ways was she a good model? Are there points of improvement you believe she could have implemented in her next challenging interaction? The primary scripture text for this episode is 1 Samuel 25:1-38 with as the focal verses 23-28: 23 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed low before him. 24 She fell at his feet and said, “I accept all blame in this matter, my lord. Please listen to what I have to say. 25 I know Nabal is a wicked and ill-tempered man; please don't pay any attention to him. He is a fool, just as his name suggests. But I never even saw the young men you sent. 26 “Now, my lord, as surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, since the Lord has kept you from murdering and taking vengeance into your own hands, let all your enemies and those who try to harm you be as cursed as Nabal is. 27 And here is a present that I, your servant, have brought to you and your young men. 28 Please forgive me if I have offended you in any way. The Lord will surely reward you with a lasting dynasty, for you are fighting the Lord's battles. And you have not done wrong throughout your entire life. ADDITIONAL VERSES: A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. (Proverbs 15:1) 4 Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. (Proverbs 15:4) 13 Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. (Proverbs 18:13) Patience can persuade a prince, and soft speech can break bones. (Proverbs 25:15) Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back. (Proverbs 29:11) Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord. (Romans 12:19) Weekly Assignment Feature: In which area of life do you need to improve your diplomatic skills? Proverbs 18:13-15 Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. Intelligent people are always ready to learn. Their ears are often open for knowledge. People will draw closer to you only to figure you out. It's all about their motives. Someone once said, when a person shows you their true colors, don't take it lightly. You must be eager to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Remember, this may cost you being different. That's a good thing. Always keep your heart pure towards anything you do. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week on a bonus episode of The New Abnormal, Soledad O'Brien joins Molly Jong-Fast to discuss trust in the media, Fox News, coronavirus vaccines, and Afghanistan coverage. “Misinformation is an amazing tool to get people to not trust in their leadership or in the government. And I think the government and the media, too, have done a very poor job in making people trust them.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Brian Mayer is excited to take about 10 episodes of the podcast to talk about communication. It is probably the most talked about issue that couples have together that can sometimes not work well. We will take some time to dive into this topic to help give you better tools to work on and things to consider to help communication between you and your spouse be more effective and more loving. We hope you are inspired by today's message. For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies Today we are talking about cultivating a relationship with Jesus Christ. You might be wondering how this would have anything to do with how I communicate with my spouse, but as you will see by the time we end today there is a strong connection. I saved this episode for the last in our series because I do believe that it is the cornerstone for all the rest. You may have read in the bible that Jesus is considered the cornerstone. The definition of a cornerstone is a “stone that forms the base of a corner of a building, joining two walls.” As such Jesus is the cornerstone that brings together the other 9 episodes on communication with this one. There may be some of you that listen to this podcast who are not Christian or that take offense to Christianity. I often think a lot of this has to do with the human beings that have mistreated you or maybe twisted things. It could even come from the belief that Christianity is not inclusive. I am not here today to argue any of these points, but rather to share some helpful scripture that may help in how you communicate with your spouse. As you may or may not know Jesus was known for speaking the “truth in love.” He had a way of speaking about what was right, just, and moral, but he did it in a way that was caring and loving. I love what 1 Peter 3:15 says about this. It says “… in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. So if we have an issue with someone in our life, we should bring that issue to them by speaking the truth about whether it is building up or tearing down. But again we must do it in a way that is gentle. Other than the anger that Jesus showed when people were turning a place of worship into a place of money exchange where things were bought and sold, he was always very gentle and kind to those who were considered “less than” in his society. So what some ways to cultivate your relationship with Jesus and also what are the benefits? Lets discuss that now: Quiet Prayer: Getting alone in a room such as a closet or maybe even going out in nature can help increase hearing what many call the quiet still voice of the Lord. Above all in prayer focus on thanking the Lord for all he has done and to desire simply to increase the relationship. Make it less about a list of what you “want.” Scripture Reading About Communication: There are many passages about communication that can be very helpful to meditate on and memorize to recall when you need them. Here are a few: James 1:19 - Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, James 3:3-5 - When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. Proverbs 18:13 - Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. Gathering With Others Who Have Strong Marriages and uphold Christ at the Center of the Marriage – Learning from others in this position who have strong relationships but are willing to also share when they mess up can be so incredibly powerful, encouraging and helpful. Find and Attend a good Bible believing Church. If you find a church like this you will quite often be exposed to sermons about healthy ways to communicate with and treat your spouse. Do this for several years and the good will continue to accumulate. Teach others About What Has Worked for You and Your Spouse. There is nothing like cementing what you have learned about good communication from your prayer time, reading the Bible, attending church, and learning from others that will help when you share with others. This will often come back to strengthen your relationship and communication. We really hope you have enjoyed this entire series on communication. Please go back through episodes 182 through this one which is 191 and you will get all sorts of great information and perspectives on how to make your communication with your spouse and your family even healthier. Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. ~ Proverbs 18:13 (NLT) We live in the era of “fake news,” or so it is said. Shade is thrown this way and that. It's so easy to share information we agree with by simply clicking a button or retweeting. There are lots and lots of stories out there that can fuel anger, or provide inspiration. However, how many of these stories are actually true? Many years ago, a friend of mine shared an alarming story about a proposed law making its way through congress that would greatly restrict the freedoms of Christians, particularly those that keep Saturday as Sabbath. This law was supported by top members of each political party, and was sure to pass unless we called our congressmen immediately. It even named the bill and its reference number, something like HB 2435-12 (which would stand for “House Bill 2435-12”). I looked at the number of shares this posting had attained, and it was in the hundreds of thousands. The article was connecting with people in such a way that they felt it must be true, so they were sharing it with all of their digital friends to warn them of the impending crisis. There was just one, simple problem. The story was totally bogus. A simple search of the congressional record (It's where all of the bills are logged) would show that no such House Bill existed. Furthermore, a quick search of the alleged sponsors of the bill would also turn up zero results. They were simply the creation of someone's mind. In a world where people feel like they can't trust anything, how can we spread the gospel while we spread lies? Any trust we have is gone, and people simply turn away. King Solomon had some wisdom to share on this topic, when he wrote “Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.” Whether it is gossip, a news story, a blog, vlog, snap chat, tweet, or whatever is invented this afternoon, it is up to you to verify whether it is accurate or not. Because, by you sharing it, you are just as liable as the person who wrote it. So, please, go to the source. Check the congressional register. Go to the person being gossiped about. Verify the information from the source, not the repeaters. Christians are called to be people of integrity. We are called to stand on the truth. So, please, do so.
"Communists did the right thing," Charlie Munger said of the Chinese government for silencing Alibaba's Jack Ma. The 97 year-old vice-chairman of Berkshire Hathaway made his stunning remarks in a recent interview. Munger went on to say that while he doesn't endorse China's entire system of government, he "certainly would like to have the financial part of it in my own country." Michael takes issue with those remarks and verbally tears Munger apart.

If not, let me ask you one final question that will surely persuade you. Who says doubt is a bad thing, anyway?
Thursday Red Pill Diaries-Biden’s HHS Nominee Is A “Nuremberg Defense” Spouting Monster BIOGRAPHY Mike Church Biography – “Too Catholic For Satellite Radio” In May of 2015, Chris Ferrara wrote a bio pic essay on a talk-radio host who was then completely unknown to Catholic, talk-radio fans. The Mike Church Interview: A Remarkable Conversion to Tradition Changes the Face of Political Talk Radio Featured Chris wrote of me back then, words that were too kind but serve as a basis for this biography. Indeed, over the past year or so Mike Church has emerged as the only traditionally Catholic conservative in talk radio today, anywhere in the world. And I mean traditional. Not only during my appearances on the show, but now thematically, Mike has turned the longest running political talk show on Sirius Radio into an unabashed presentation of the Social Kingship of Christ, traditional Catholic moral teaching, and even the traditional Latin liturgy as the solution to what is evidently otherwise a terminal civilizational crisis. I have been invited on the show numerous times to defend all of these things explicitly, to speak of the one true Church, and even to call upon conservative Protestants to enter the Church if they are serious about saving our nation and our civilization. From there, on October 26, 2015, my 13 year run on Sirius Satellite Radio came to a close when my contract was not renewed. Chris would follow the above bio with an updated one titled, The Mike Church Show – Too Catholic For Satellite Radio. MIKE CHURCH BIOGRAPHY FACTS Born, February 2nd, New Orleans Begun talk-radio in 1992, WSLA, Slidell LA, I have been off air a total of 7 months since. Launched the Sirius Satellite Radio service as its FIRST – LIVE talk-show on 10 March, 2003. Promoted to Morning Drive on the SiriusXM Patriot Channel, May 2009, the 3rd most listened to show on the platform From July 2007 – present, founded Founding Father Films, wrote, produced, narrated and directed 9, full length audio features, two that made it to DVD! Returned to the Roman Catholic Church’s Tridentine Mass and Tradition in 2013. Consecrated to Our Lady via de Montfort’s formula in December 2014. I had been planning for SiriusXM to “whack me” since 2012 and had laid the structural groundwork for the next step in my career: launching the Veritas Radio Network and The CRUSADE Channel. On November 1st, 2015, in a video webcast for the press, I announced the VRN and that on November 15th, the Mike Church Show would be silent no more and would return to the air, this time on a platform custom built for LIVE talk radio. Your boss has fervent beliefs that go down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole. He directs them straight to you and he is certain he is right. You feel discussing this sort of thing at work is inappropriate but you're uncomfortable challenging him. Do you just go on letting it wash over you? Or should you counter with your own opinions, with the possibility of causing repercussions?
***IN THIS EPISODE...*** One of the characters usurps the show in a total take-over of International’s podcast (guess who?); International is barred from the Playhouse and knocks multiple times on the door, only to be told to go away by a vengeful and hurt talking microphone (who may or may not have taken over the show, but probably did, okay did, it was him) ***STILL NOT ENOUGH? ALSO IN THIS EPISODE...*** Ory receives recognition for his courage and realizes that feeling the sadness of the world is a heroic act; Mike the Mic longingly pines for the relationship of his dreams, which just happens to be an Asian condenser mic ***AND SO MUCH MORE, IT’S CRAZY!!!***
Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. ~ Proverbs 18:13 (NLT) It happens far too often. Someone goes on a rant and people take what they are saying as fact and begin rants of their own. This happened in the past when Walla Walla University was the target of one such rant. A person found a listing of the university church on a website that is not in line with SDA theology. Immediately, the person leapt to conclusions that the university church was somehow partnering with a ministry that was somewhat shady. An article was written and it was shared, and seen, hundreds of thousands of times. People were outraged that the university could do such a thing. People started calling for the entire pastoral team there to be fired. They also turned their vitriol on the university itself. Some even called for shutting down the university all-together, as it was a bastion of inappropriate theological teaching and was, therefore, brain washing our young people. There was a small problem with all of this. The article was flat out false. It made a huge assumption that the university church, and the university itself, were tied to this other ministry when it couldn't be farther from the truth. Yes, their name did appear on the other ministry's website, but the university team was completely unaware it was listed there. Once they were made aware, they contacted the offending ministry to remove their name from the list of sponsoring organizations and it was immediately taken down. No one bothered to contact the university our church to dialog with them about the perceived issue. No one contacted the offending ministry to see if the name listed there was legit or a mistake. But, everyone who participated in spreading the propaganda immediately went on the attack with zero factual information. People, please, I beg of you, take this verse to heart, “Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.” Not only does it reflect poorly on each of us, it also reflects poorly on the church, and our Christ. We must do our own research. We must not just take someone's word for it. We must check their sources for ourselves. We should read articles that offer different points of view. We must use the brain that God has given each of us. #God #Jesus #Bible #Christian #Devotional
On a scale from one to ten, with one representing the worst and ten the best, what score would you give yourself when it comes to how well you let others know you are listening when they speak? Just out of curiosity, would your spouse or others close to you agree with your response? As president of a ministry promoting and teaching how to have a strong marriage, I admit I should know the value of intentional listening. However, I also admit I consistently struggle in this area. Mainly because I am usually going Mach 10 with my pants on fire, thinking I need to get to the next thing. Bottom line, when this occurs I am operating from a selfish heart by making a volitional choice to not listen closely when others are speaking—even when it is the person taking my food order at the drive-through! So, what is intentional listening? Simply stated, it is exercising specific communication skills that help give the speaker greater confidence in knowing that what they have said has been accurately interpreted and understood. Since intentional listening is also often referred to as active listening, let's look at a few specific characteristics of active listening, beginning with non-verbal indicators. Body Language Your body language has a lot to do with letting others know you're listening. For example, making eye contact with the speaker lets them know you value their comments, as opposed to you looking at text messages or e-mails on your cell phone. Occasionally giving them an affirming “head nod” lets others know you're listening. Facial expressions also say much about the listener. Looking angry or staring intensely is generally a good way to cut conversations short. Smiling at others when they are talking is basically like giving them permission to open up and lets them know you care. If you're not angry, don't send mixed signals. People tend to quickly notice whether you're listening by how you stand or sit while they speak. Lounging back in a chair with your arms folded tends to more easily give others the impression that you are not engaged in the conversation. While some might argue this type of posture sends a signal of comfort, most interpersonal communication specialists will agree that sitting more upright and even leaning into the speaker is more likely to let them know you are actively listening. Verbal Expressions Interjecting an infrequent “yes” can let others know you're tracking with them. However, very few people enjoy it when the interjections come every few seconds. Summarizing is a great way of engaging in the conversation. “What I hear you say,” is a good example of summarizing. Asking clarifying questions like, “So, I understand you to say,” or “Can you give me more information?” not only lets the speaker know you're listening, but also whether they are accurately communicating their thoughts. Remember, active listening doesn't mean constantly interjecting your comments by cutting others off. God tells us in Proverbs 18:13 that, “Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.” So, how about now? Would you still give yourself the same score as you did previously?
One of the ways our brains are like computers is that they encode and process new information with information already stored in memory. Just since the inception and continued use of brain imaging, have researchers been able to better understand the role of multi-tasking and its impact in our behavior. Relatively new research regarding cognitive processing confirms what many researchers have suspected for years - there truly is an upper limit to the amount of information a person can effectively process in a given unit of time. Therefore, it is important to understand that when doing multiple things simultaneously, less cognitive processing activity is allocated to each function. It only gets worse the more things we attempt to accomplish or think about at any given time. So, let's apply this concept to communication in marriage. For years, I took great pride in my perceived ability to both listen to my wife Lynne explain an issue she was dealing with, while at the same time solving her problem in my head. In my mind, I knew I could provide her an insightful solution long before she was able to paint an accurate picture for me. Yet, based on what we just learned about the brain, it became impossible for me to devote all my attention to what Lynne was trying to communicate the moment I began solving her problem in my mind. Unfortunately, the same scenario would play out during our conflicts. Only here, the moment one of Lynne's comments solicited a negative emotion in me, I would quickly assume she had selfish intentions and offensive motivations. Therefore, once I prepared a set of defensive responses in my mind, all intended to produce character assassination, I would cut her off in mid sentence and unload. Sound familiar? Needless to say, today things are so much better in this area. Here are a few tips on what led to change for us: Be willing to learn effective listening skills (check out the Drive Through Listening podcast). Value what Scripture says about cutting people off when they are communicating. For example, Proverbs 18:13 - “Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.” The moment you recognize your mind shifting, intentionally slow down and take captive your thoughts. 2 Corinthians 10: 5 – bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. When unhealthy thoughts triggered by negative emotions begin to enter your mind, slam the door shut. When tempted to interject while others are speaking, disrupting the flow of communication can be effective. Things like asking the speaker to push the pause button. Then, take a moment to stand or step away for a moment and gather your thoughts. Ephesians 4:29 states that nothing should come from our mouth except that which builds up and imparts grace to the hearer. Remember, you don't have to apologize for what you don't say. Remember what is being learned about cognitive processing. The moment you allow unhealthy or unedifying thoughts to take center stage while someone is speaking, you immediately lose a portion of your cognitive ability to effectively hear what is being said. Commit your struggles to prayer. Be honest with yourself about your obstacles and barriers to success. Confess them to the Lord, asking Him for perseverance and discernment in making good choices. Celebrate the small victories and maintain belief that success is possible.
עֵד שְׁקָרִים לֹא יִנָּקֶה וְיָפִיחַ כְּזָבִים יֹאבֵד:This morning (1/6/20 at YBT) we experienced some serious déjà vu! Today's pasuk was EXACTLY the same as Mishlei 19:5, which we learned last week, with the exception of one word. We've seen pesukim which resemble other pesukim in PART, and we've seen pesukim which are entirely verbatim repetitions but are written by different authors (Shlomo ha'Melech vs. Anshei Chizkiyahu). This is the first time we've seen such an extreme repetition in such close proximity. Thankfully, the Ralbag and Malbim helped us to develop an approach! We also sharpened some of the methodological insights we came up with on Monday (on 10:11) and yesterday (on 19:8).----------מקורות:משלי יט:ה,טמצודת דוד - משלי יט:ה,טרד"ק - משלי יט:ה,טמאירי - משלי יט:ה,טרבינו יונה - משלי יט:ה,טרלב"ג - משלי יט:ה,טמלבי"ם - משלי יט:ה,ט ----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! This remaster of #44 comes from the prehistoric days of 1986, when audio was edited on, at best, 1/4" reel-to-reel tape using a splicer and lots of little reels, and copious paper notes, or else, at worst, two cassette tape decks and a "record-pause" button. Seems like it was somehow... better... oh, well. Along with excellent remastered copies of the otherwise unreleased Media Barrage #8, this also features a then-young Spouting team calling themselves The Rat Cave. THEY WERE GREAT! As heard below. Everything is punctuated by an ongoing rant by the Angry Young Stang about how subversion of the current regime is always itself subverted by being turned into a fashion. Proverbs 18 New Living Translation (NLT) 18 Unfriendly people care only about themselves; they lash out at common sense. 18 Flipping a coin[a] can end arguments; it settles disputes between powerful opponents. 19 An offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city. Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with bars. 20 Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction. 21 The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences. 22 The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the Lord. 23 The poor plead for mercy; the rich answer with insults. 24 There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.

Growing Up | Herbert Cooper Proverbs 18:22 He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord. (NIV) 1 Corinthians 13:11 It’s like this: when I was a child I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child does. But when I became a man my thoughts grew far beyond those of my childhood, and now I have put away the childish things. (TLB) A. Put away childlike thinking James 3:16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. (NIV) Philippians 2:3–4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (NIV) B. Put away childlike speaking Four Ways to Overcome Childish Communication 1. Don’t attack the person, attack the problem Ephesians 4:29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. (NLT) 2. As soon as Parquet Courts dropped their new album in 2018, I was all ears. The New York band have always been prolific, and political, but this album more than any other was responding very directly to the times. When frontman Andrew Savage joined me for the Take 5, I knew what to do. Spouting strong messages throughout his own music, I gave him the theme “songs to rally around”. Music that, lyrically or sonically, conjured a sense of activism, agency, and creativity in him. From Crass to Tyvek, Funkadelic to Fela Kuti, you can hear the spirit of Parquet Courts in all of these brilliant choices. Crass - 'Banned From the Roxy' Funkadelic - 'Standing On The Verge of Getting It On' Tyvek - 'Buildings Burning' Melvin Van Peebles - 'Come On Feet' Fela Kuti - 'Unnecessary Begging'

This episode is heavy on the spoken word, and beautifully written! It's written largely by Rev. Dr. Uncle Onan Canobite, Rev. Eddie Romanov, Lonesome Cowboy Dave, Pappy Stang, and THE WEEK magazine's science sections. Some of this excellent writing is, however, read aloud by Rev. Stang, but luckily with lovely background music by, variously, Brian Henke and Cyberchump, which beef up both the scripted ranting and the improv Spouting. Also included are a new Rudy Schwartz Project instrumental from Hell, and ancient, seminal SubGenius classics by Inhibiting Factor, Rev. Bleepo Abernathy, and the Puzzling Evidence show. Since the beginning of civilization, there have always been people bitching that the current generation and world we know it is going up in flames. As lives progress, while some things change for the better and some change for the worse, loss aversion means that we pay much more attention to the bad stuff. So overall, people think life as we know it is getting worse & they blame it on the current generation. Spouting off about how things were so amazing "back in the day." This way of thinking is called declinism, and it is complete bullshit false "fake news" way of thinking. Complaining about the current generation is tacky AF. If you suffer from declinism chances are you are pumping a low octane fuel into your self-worth tank. Thank God I'm here to save you & myself. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/everyoneneedsalittle/support

https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Wisdom-Trek2800.jpg () Wisdom-Trek / Creating a LegacyWelcome to Day 431 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Tongue Can Bring Life or Death – Proverbs [18:13]-24Thank you for joining us for our 5 days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. This is Day 431 of our trek, and today is Wisdom Wednesday. Every Wednesday along life's trails we dig for the nuggets of wisdom that are found within the book of Proverbs. Today we will explore the 2nd half of Chapter 18. https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/heart-of-wisdom-sm-620x250.jpg () We are broadcasting from our studio at Home2 in Charlotte, North Carolina. On Sunday after church, we headed back to Indian Trail and arrived by late evening. Our plans to watch the fireworks display at Marietta's Sternwheel Festival were canceled due to a line of severe thunderstorms that went through Marietta that evening. Although they ended up having the fireworks after the storms, we decided that we did not want to deal with the crowds and wet grass. There will be other years to enjoy it in the future. We are back in the thick of work with many projects and client work on our schedule for this week, but for now, it's time to break camp and head out on our trail in search of those golden nuggets of wisdom that are found within the book of Proverbs. One nugget King Solomon continually emphasizes is how we speak. It is a continual theme on today's trek also. How we speak to others is so important it can literally bring life or death as verse 21 starts out with is… A Tongue Can Bring Life or DeathLet's start our trek with verse 13. 13 Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. We all fall into this trap, don't we? In many conversations, we are so busy preparing our reply we are not really listening to what is being said. This type of communication is shameful and makes us a fool. A truly wise person will speak little and listen much to hear what is really being said. There is much to learn from a conversation of what is not being said by others, but we can only hear it if we keep our own mouth shut. 14 The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit? We can endure much physically and still survive, but once a person's spirit is wounded or destroyed that person will be defeated. We need to be very careful not to abuse others physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Words can cut a deeper wound than physical abuse. 15 Intelligent people are always ready to learn. Their ears are open for knowledge. The key to becoming a truly intelligent person is to keep your mouth shut and ears open. I have yet to learn anything when I am speaking myself, other than to realize how foolish I sound at times. Let us make it a habit of listening and learning, then speak only when it is appropriate or to ask questions so we can learn more. https://wisdom-trek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Quotation-Winston-Churchill-I-am-always-ready-to-learn-although-I-do-not-5-63-33.jpg () 16 Giving a gift can open doors; it gives access to important people! Within today's political environment, we see how this is so true. Gifts for political favors seem to be an epidemic. It probably has always been the case, as it is mentioned a few times within the book of Proverbs. This does not always have to be a bad situation, but let me ask this question, “How willing are you to give gifts to others with no expectation of anything in return?” That is the truest form of love and compassion. 17 The first to speak in court sounds right— until the cross-examination begins. We see this situation so often in court but also in regular dialog with others. When someone presents their...
At first it's a fairly "normal" show (by Hour of Slack standards anyway). Then, seemingly out of desperation, Stang starts reading ONAN CANOBITE'S DECEMBER 2014 SERMON. For 20 minutes, the show alternates between Stang reading chunks of the great ONAN SERMON and Dave doing his patented surrealist extemporaneizing -- altogether, an excellent combo of clever writing and pure Spouting. At the climax, the worst "Bob" song in the world is played! We apologize for NOTHING!
This one's solid Spouting from the July 3, "2014" recordings from Wisteria during 17X-Day Drill. And we probably said too much. It's Dr. Hal, Rev. Stang, and Princess Wei, with testimonies from "Suds" Pshaw, Rev. Skull and Pater & Petal Nostril. The corpse of the mysteriously-killed dog "Snuckles" is displayed (albeit not by radio) and the mystery deepens when Pater and Petal deliver their account of an attack on their car while they were in it. Who is the unseen culprit? Some sort of monster? Ol' Sequaw? Dr. Legume or Philo Drummond? Between the speculation on the bizarre Wisteria marauder, many Church secrets -- FORMER secrets, rather -- were accidentally revealed, especially about the real freaks of the Church. One example: "Bob" renews himself by shedding and then eating his own skin. Also: Ren and Stimpy. There're some pretty good Dobbs Sales rants in there too. Lovecraft fans may be especially interested.
In this episode I discuss allot of things including my smashed thumb, sprouting and our desire for warm weather and fresh foods to arrive.

Once again we pull the best Spouting from The Puzzling Evidence Show, of January 8, 2010, with Puzzling and his guests Dr. Hal, Dr. Philo Drummond, Rev. Phineas Narco, Justin Credible and Empress Zoey. Interspersed with that are dozens of songs, collages, and god-only-knows-what by Rural War Room, Mark Hosler, Fernandinande LeMur, The Attery Squash, Local Color, Pilgrim Speakeasy, and frequent caller Bernard. We'll bet the Attery Squash song gives you a brainworm.
