What draws us beyond a writer's books and into their life? Why do some authors inspire us to seek out letters, journals, interviews, and biographies while others remain known to us only through their work? In this episode, Trevor and Paul are joined by Dr. James Bailey, author of Like a Cat Loves a Bird, a new book exploring the life and work of Muriel Spark. Rather than focusing on biography as a genre, the conversation wanders through a variety of questions about writers and readers: what prompts our curiosity about authors, what we hope to discover when we learn more about their lives, whether biographical knowledge enriches or complicates our reading, and which writers have inspired us to look beyond the page.Along the way, James discusses his fascination with Muriel Spark, the origins of Like a Cat Loves a Bird, and what it means to spend time in the company of a writer's work and life.2026 Novella Book ClubWe have announced the four novellas we will be reading for The Mookse and Gripes Novella Book Club in 2026!* January: Daisy Miller, by Henry James* April: An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter, by César Aira* July: The Hour of the Star, by Clarice Lispector* September: Prelude, by Katherine MansfieldDiscussions will be hosted at The Mookse and the Gripes Discord (see below!).We've got some fantastic author-focused episodes lined up for the foreseeable future, and we want to give you plenty of time to dive in if you'd like to read along with us. Just so you’re aware: at one point in this episode, Barnum denies being racist while also dodging a tomato someone throws at him. And somehow… that’s not even the wildest part.Anyway—This episode takes the Barnum saga to its peak (and chaos), as we step behind the glittery curtain of “The Greatest Show on Earth” to reveal the messy reality the musical politely avoided. We explore Barnum’s controversial sideshow acts, including the dehumanizing “What Is It?” exhibit, and how he turned harmful pseudoscience into box office gold. The man was hustling — and sometimes harming — long before Hugh Jackman started singing on rooftops.Through reenactments, heated commentary, uninvited tomatoes, and Barnum himself defending every terrible idea he ever had, we unravel how spectacle, exploitation, racism, manipulation, genius, and pure shamelessness merged into the legend that shaped modern entertainment. We also follow Barnum into his unexpected political career (because of course he became a mayor), his partnership with James Bailey, and his overconfident reactions to modern TV, TikTok, Nollywood, and roller coasters. He hates most things, but respects exaggeration — naturally. This is Barnum unfiltered. Ambitious. Audacious. Problematic. And annoyingly proud of it.Welcome to The Greatest Showman — where the real story is stranger than the musical… and the musical already had a man dancing with an elephant.

Advertisers have been pulling investment from newsbrands and trusted journalism for years. The latest AA/Warc figures show that national and regional newsbrands, along with magazines, have suffered the steepest declines in adspend across all channels, while tech platforms continue to claim a growing share of the market. However, the figures suggest this decline will slow in 2026, and this year's Media Week Awards was a successful night for many newsbrands, including The Telegraph, which took home the coveted Sales Team of the Year. This episode of The Campaign Podcast asks whether advertisers are moving away from trusted journalism or alternatively whether newsbrands are fighting back and seeing a resurgence. James Bailey, UK chief executive of Dentsu's iProspect, joins the episode alongside Adam Foley, chief executive of independent agency Bountiful Cow and former director of UK advertising for the Guardian as well as founder of the News Alliance, a cross-industry coalition to encourage advertisers to support trusted news and journalism.Hosted by Campaign's tech and multimedia editor Lucy Shelley, this episode includes UK editor-in-chief Gideon Spanier and deputy media editor Shauna Lewis.Further reading:'Utterly ruinous': media agency boss on the impact of ad blocking on news brandsMedia 360: Media industry is ‘sentencing news to death' and ignoring its effectivenessMajority of execs believe brand safety in news harms advertisersAhead of Trump's second term, Meta to scrap fact-checking on Facebook and InstagramNews needs youMars and Unilever on 'moral and business responsibility' to improve online safety Hosted on Acast. The AI trend of technological intervention in humanity now threatens our ability to make choices. Automation narrows and eliminates the space for humans to make their own decisions, locking society into a deterministic future. Through scientific and mathematical precision, the force of mechanization tries to remove possibilities for error, and by doing so, it deprives something essential about human beings. Being human in the future will not be about individual survival or escape - it will be how we live together, fighting against our cybernetic overlords. Shortly after Pope Leo XIV was elected to the papacy, he expressed concerns about rapidly advancing Artificial Intelligence. The Pope cited A.I.'s “immense potential” while warning that it requires responsibility to ensure that it can be used for the good of all.” We are seeing hi-tech companies spending tens of billions of dollars and working at a breakneck development pace, while there is little global agreement about A.I. regulation. This may be an indication that our Golden Age may lead to an internal war of Organic versus Satanic Mechanics. Tonight on Ground Zero (7-10 pm, pacific time on groundzeroplus.com). Clyde Lewis talks with Matthew James Bailey. Call in to the LIVE show at 503-225-0860. #groundzeroplus #ClydeLewis #AI #goldenage

On this week's podcast, we chat about all the drama on the cobbles between the 17th and the 19th March 2025 (Episodes #11,519 - 11,524). When we heard that Rob was returning to the show all those months ago, one thing that we were hoping for above all others was that he'd get some screen time with Tracy, and Corrie certainly delivered on that front this week! After the runaway prisoner turns up in the ginnel to beg his ex-fiancée for help, Tracy finds herself looking down the barrel of a gun - will she get out alive, and what will next week's episodes bring for Carla and Lisa? Meanwhile, there's a return to the Street that nobody was expecting in the form of a newly recast James Bailey, as Ed summons him to Weatherfield in a desperate attempt to stop Dee-Dee giving up on her baby forever. Also this week, Evelyn stands by her daughter, Brian learns about the real reason Julie is back in town and Sean finds himself the unwilling accomplice of the Brody bunch. It's a bit of a slow news week this week, but we do get a small update on Eileen Derbyshire in the Kabin, and we round things off with some listener feedback, including a voicemail from one Canadian listener about her recent trip to the UK to see the Coronation Street Experience and the On The Sofa live show! Perhaps the Demon of the Year award should go to AI. Elon Musk sees it as a necessary demon as he continues to peddle Neuralink implants and the way science is making humans dance by remote control. We can only assume the worst as this monster is loose and the mad scientists do not know how to control it. Furthermore, the late Dr. Robert Duncan indicated that Artificial Intelligence is being used for advanced intimidation, stalking, electronic torture, and mind control and its uses in digging into the neurological functions of the mind. This can produce a spiritual or divine experience and significantly alter a target's perception of reality through DARPA's “Soulcatcher” program and manufactured apparitions generated by Project Bluebeam-like technology. Transhumanist thinkers predict that human beings may eventually be able to transform themselves into beings with such greatly expanded abilities as to merit the label “posthuman.” The symbol for transhuman is H+ or “Enhanced Human.” As the future moves forward, we will find that machines can take on human forms that are uncharacteristically real. Once humans move beyond their repulsion to “lifelike machines” they reach a point of empathy. As our fears of man and technology diminish, we begin to see evolution steer toward transhumanism. The idea of uploading the brain into the body of a clone or an artificially enhanced child has been considered by science as one of our next steps in the evolutionary process. Tonight on Ground Zero, Clyde Lewis talks with Transhumanist, Zoltan Istvan about ÜBERMENSCH UBERMECH. Originally Broadcast As 11/26/24
