Daniel works for one of the big guys. As Global Hardware Product Manager at Philips Dynalite, he has the resources to really make a difference. Daniel tells us about the evolution from contact closures to devices in a network having mini computers in them. You're still pressing a button, but a microprocessor is interpreting those button presses. Daniel joined us from Australia. Luckily, he was free at 5 am on a Saturday morning. Daniel Walker has worked at Philips Dynalite for the past 23 years. Originally seeking a position within the electrical engineering team, Daniel soon found his stride in technical sales. Having spent many years consulting on projects all over the world, across a wide variety of segments from office to industry, retail, hospitality, and everything in between, Daniel developed a keen sense for best lighting control application practices. He stepped into his current position as Global Hardware Product Manager ten years ago, and now spends his days working closely with the market to understand and anticipate changes in customer preference, regulatory requirements, and industry trends. Daniel then conveys this insight to Philips Dynalite's R&D team, giving them tangible product development targets to ensure every product exceeds customer expectations. Daniel also plays an active role in bringing those products to market for launch and providing ongoing support.

We've seen this story play out one too many times. After a documented history of domestic violence by her partner Daniel Walker, 40-year-old Tyesha Wayne of Sahuarita, Arizona fought back this past August. While he attacked her in their garage, she grabbed a gun, pointed it at him, and asked him to leave her alone. He didn't. Tyesha fatally shot Daniel in self-defense and the courts are calling it premeditated murder, saying Tyesha's previous record would show a history of domestic violence against Daniel. Her previous record? Being strangled by Daniel to the point of unconsciousness only for her to be arrested immediately afterward. It's almost like the system has a vendetta against women…..but that can't be real, can it? Oh, but it seems it can be. Previous episodes of Toxic where we discuss survivors who were arrested and often jailed for defending themselves from their abuser include: Ep. 64—Nikki Addimando was sentenced to 19 years for killing her abusive partner. She's still in jail but is set to get out next year….finally. Ep. 60—Kayla Fassio didn't serve jail time but she was arrested after she called for help after an altercation with her abusive partner. Ep. 55—Rachel Bellesen shot her abusive ex after he attacked her and tried to rape her. She faced life behind bars. Ep. 42—Marissa Alexander was originally sentenced to 20 years in jail after firing a warning shot toward her husband who had attacked and then threatened to kill her.  Ep. 32—Kim Dadou Brown spent 17 years behind bars for killing her abusive partner as he tried to strangle her to death. Ep. 30—Survivor Robin nonfatally shot her abusive partner after he attacked and tried to kill her. She was arrested and he was not. He then went on to abuse his next wife. Tyesha deserves justice, peace and safety, and we hope you think so, too. Toxic will provide updates as we learn them. Also, mentioned in the episode was a previous one we did with Ed Sakwa, CEO of Emerge in Tucson, talking about whether or not abusers can reform. That episode number is 38 if you want to learn more about that. Do you have a story you think we need to discuss or a guest we should have on? This is an episode of Nourishing Matter to Chew On. Find more episodes, and subscribe, here.  In this episode I speak with Dr Colin Chartres, CEO of The Crawford Fund, and Dr Daniel Walker, Chief Scientist of ACIAR, about an inspiring workshop that was held in March to bring leading Australian farmers and researchers together to present and discuss success stories, research challenges and paths forward.  Farmers and researchers across the country have high ambitions and believe it's possible for agriculture to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 with the will and way.  Imagine, if something huge but that sounds small, like “an increase of 0.4% of carbon in soils” on top of current levels of about 1% could get us there?!  The challenges are huge but Australian farmers and researchers are taking action and leading the way forward – both here and abroad.  Facilitating the conversations, research collaborations and disseminating Australian innovative practices here and overseas is key and The Crawford Fund and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) do just that.  Proceedings and live - yes live! – presentations from the workshop, “What can farmers do? Farmer-Led, Science-Based Greenhouse Gas Mitigation: Strategies for Australia and Abroad” can be viewed online at The Crawford Fund's website. Take further inspiration from the international Global Research Alliance (GRA) on Greenhouse Gases in Agriculture, that ACIAR, for Australia, currently Chairs, and that Dr Walker and colleagues convened meetings for in conjunction with the workshop that we discuss in this episode.   A privilege and such a pleasure to speak with and learn from Dr Chartres and Dr Walker and to hear their ideas and reflections upon, the discussions – before and after the workshop.  Eminent Australian scientists - each with deep knowledge and understanding about Australian agriculture and ecosystems. Before joining The Crawford Fund as CEO in 2014, Dr Chartres was Director General of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Centre, headquartered in Sri Lanka, 2007-2012. Previously, he was Chief Science Adviser to the National Water Commission, held senior roles in the Bureau of Rural Sciences and Geoscience Australia and worked with CSIRO Division of Soils from 1984- 1997 and from 2002-2004 in CSIRO's Land and Water Division. Prior to joining ACIAR in 2017 as Chief Scientist, Dr Walker spent 23 years at CSIRO, where he was Research Director for Agriculture and Global Change with CSIRO Agriculture and Food and prior to that he was Chief of CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences. In his current role as Chief Scientist at ACIAR, Dan oversees the strategic science focus of the ACIAR research portfolio and its impact assessment, monitoring and evaluation work and also provides leadership for Research Program Managers across nine research areas, along with oversight of ACIAR's relationship with the Australian innovation system. It's a very special video episode of Black Mass Appeal, the podcast that brings modern Satanism to the masses! In this episode, we celebrate the third anniversary of the podcast with something different: a trivia game! Simone Lasher runs three rounds of Satanic trivia, as cohosts Daniel Walker and Tabitha Slander take on teams of listener contestants. Be sure to watch the video version of the show on our YouTube channel! Praise, condemnation, questions, and your team's answers can be sent to blackmassappealpod@gmail.com.   TRIVIA QUESTIONS! (Scroll down for answers at the bottom of the page.) ROUND ONE: SATAN In Dante’s Inferno, who was Satan munching on in the icy Ninth Circle? (Three points) In the book of Revelation, how many heads does the “the beast from the sea” have? How many crowns? (Two points) Most folks know the “number of the beast” in Revelation is 666. What’s the alternative number that is sometimes given as the “number of the beast”? What person is this number thought to represent? (Two points) In the Book of Job, God issued two conditions before allowing Satan to fuck with Job. What were they, in order? (Two points) In Paradise Lost, Book 1, Satan is the first character to speak. Who answers him (and is the second character to speak)? (One point) Embarrassingly few women have played the devil in film. Name one. (One point) A mosaic in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna, Italy, is thought to be the first depiction of Satan in art. What’s unusual about this Satan? Historians usually mark off the years, about 1815 to 1845 as the Jacksonian era and for Americans, and many other people across the planet, these were years of singularity. This period of time is remembered for many inventions and innovations. Most notably was Samuel Morse’s magnetic telegraph. His magnetic telegraph “eliminated the greatest problem plagued by all republics since the ancient days of Rome” because it was able to connect the states through rapid communication. Originally, Congress thought that the telegraph would be used as an extension of the Postal Service, but they could find no way for it to be profitable, so they left it up to the private sector to decide how to best utilize the service. When was the Jacksonian era? How did the way Americans travelled change through the Jacksonian era? What was the most impressive innovation of that era? On this episode, Dr.G is joined by the fierce turnaround-artist and disrupter-of-talent, Daniel Walker. As the former Chief Talent Officer of Gap, Apple, and JCPenny, he shares with us his unconventional approach to developing talent poised for disruptive change. Never before told, his unusual stories unravel the truth of what really happened behind the scenes. He shares with us his personal secrets for developing fearless talent, how his military background shaped his strategies, and a number of humorous, untold stories of personal interactions with his close friend, Steve Jobs. How did Gap become a household name? How should organizations develop A+ talent? What were the behind-closed-doors conversations that led to Apple’s unprecedented turnaround? All this and more on today’s episode. Now, That’s Unusual. About Daniel Walker Daniel Walker is one of the world’s foremost authorities in the field of talent acquisition. Challenging the value of widely accepted HR standard practices, he has played a fundamental role in building some of America’s most ground-breaking companies. Walker spent four years in military intelligence, serving in the US Army Security Agency and went on to earn a psychology degree from Ohio State University. He began his career with Lazarus Department Stores, eventually becoming the Vice President of Human Resources. Walker’s impressive resume in talent acquisition spans four decades and includes titles such as HR Chief for the retail division of General Mills, Vice President of HR for The Gap, Inc., Chief Talent Officer for JC Penny as well as Chief Talent Officer for Apple, Inc. Walker shares his core belief that a company’s most valuable asset is its extraordinary talent via lectures throughout the United States and Europe. He founded and currently serves as CEO of The Human Revolution Studios, a cutting-edge human capital firm; he also co-founded Sunstone Leadership, a startup combining the best practices of elite special forces units and exemplar corporate leadership development.  Key Interview Takeaways Human Resources should focus on identifying great leaders and an endless supply of great talent, then molding the resulting team into a great workforce. Ineffective HR departments focus instead on processes (i.e.: succession planning, organizational and performance reviews) and lose sight of the most essential element, the people. The emerging companies doing talent acquisition the right way work to build cultures in which employees are encouraged to take risks, to debate, and to find joy in their work. They have visionary leaders who value human capital and place a premium on the quality of the staff experience. “There is no fear in doing the right thing.” The military utilizes an asymmetrical approach in which everyone leads and improvisation is crucial. Because a mission rarely (if ever) goes exactly as planned, a soldier must be a creative thinker who adjusts on the fly to accomplish the mission. Business would do well to utilize a similar common sense approach as opposed to being stifled by hierarchy and following protocol because “that’s the way it’s always been done.” Talent acquisition must embrace the idea of ‘force multiplication’. In his work rebuilding Apple, Inc., Walker was faced with the task of reducing head count and labor cost burn rate while increasing the quality of the organization. He incorporated the elite forces concept of force multiplication: One Navy Seal should have the fighting effectiveness of 100 of the enemy. One quality employee, properly equipped and supported, can have the effectiveness of many.  Learn more about Daniel Walker LinkedIn The Human Revolution Studios Sun Stone Leadership

www.AlternativeHealthTools.com Daniel Walker is a former Police Detective who for nine years investigated the sex trafficking of women and children in more than a dozen countries. Working on a covert basis Daniel infiltrated organized criminal networks responsible for the exploitation of women and children in the global multi billion-dollar commercial sex industry. His efforts resulted in the rescue of hundreds of victims and the successful prosecution of many perpetrators. In 2012 Daniel founded Nvader, a New Zealand initiative designed to effectively combat human trafficking around the world. His work has been cited in numerous local publications as well as internationally in both books, TED talks and television documentaries. Daniel communicates a powerful message of humanity, freedom and hope and covers topics that include the following: Behind Enemy Lines: Celebrating our freedom as human beings to choose our response, irrespective of the circumstances. Sharing from his own experiences as an undercover agent inside organised crime rings trafficking in women and children, Daniel shares his own secrets for overcoming doubt and disappointment, turning apparent adversity and failure into opportunities for growth and development. Daniel’s chilling experiences become the platform from which your own team can be inspired and empowered to greater resilience, stamina and performance. Courage Under Fire: Experiencing fear and going through it to greater levels of commitment and engagement. The terror experienced by those enslaved inside the modern day slave trade, as well as their courage, provided both the catalyst and the path to Daniel as he wrestled with his own anxiety and fear in the face of discovery and imminent death. Anxiety and fear are the plague of any company seeking to create new and innovative solutions. Daniel provides unexpected solutions to everyday problem solving and personal achievement in the workplace. From Slavery to Freedom: Unleashing the powerful link between self-compassion and performance. Evidence suggests that low self-compassion is a primary cause of workplace conflict, low morale and poor performance. Daniel communicates how he was able to transform his own mindset into more resilient self-compassion in order to operate successfully within the traumatic and stressful environments he worked in. Find out how self-compassion can transform both your working relationships and goal driven outcomes. Fighting "from" Freedom: Clarifying the lenses through which we see ourselves and others in order to build a stronger brand and a more successful corporate culture. So much time and so many resources are wasted in the pursuit of our own short-term personal ambitions, often at the expense of the overall long-term desired outcomes. www.AlternativeHealthTools.com Daniel Walker is a former Police Detective who for nine years investigated the sex trafficking of women and children in more than a dozen countries. Daniel's chilling experiences become the platform from which your own team can be inspired and empowered to greater resilience, stamina and performance. Future of Food III In November 2007, Deconstructing Dinner attended one of the first regional food security conferences ever held in Canada. With a population of less than 10,000 people, the City of Nelson, British Columbia, hosted over 250 people for the first evening of keynote speakers. With an equally impressive 170 in attendance on the second day of keynote speakers and workshops, the conference acts as an example for other Canadian communities wishing to begin organizing themselves to take greater control over the food available to them. Deconstructing Dinner hopes the raw recordings, shows, and resources presented on the Conference Page will aid groups across the country looking to ensure the presence of a socially and environmentally responsible local food system that benefits local economies. Part III On Part III we listen in on segments from two of the four conference workshops: Technical Aspects of Farming and Community Development. This episode highlights the dialogue that such a conference can help inspire, and emphasizes the wealth of knowledge and talent that may be hidden in the recesses of North American communities. Conscientious Cooks V In September 2007, Host Jon Steinman travelled to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. During his time there, he sat down to a tasty meal at Weczeria - a small restaurant where chef Daniel Walker ensures ingredients are uniquely Saskatchewan. While some restaurants display their coveted awards, Walker instead adorns his walls with photographs of his suppliers. Voices Merv Sloss, Local Flavours Products and Services Co-operative (Creston, BC) - LFPSC is a food co-operative that looks to directly link producers, processors, distributors and retailers with consumers. Herb Barbolet, Associate - Simon Fraser University's Centre for Sustainable Community Development (CSCD) (Burnaby, BC) - The CSCD is a teaching and research unit of Simon Fraser University, established in 1989. The Centre uses the resources and talents of the University to teach and encourage accountable and sustainable community development. Herb farmed organically for ten years and was co-founder of FarmFolk/CityFolk, a nonprofit that works to create local, sustainable food systems. Jeremy Lack, Farmer - Mad Dog Farm (Tarrys, BC) Wayne Harris, Farmer - Mountain Valley Dairy (Lister, BC) And more from workshop delegates, panelists and facilitators... Guests Dan Walker, Owner/Chef - Weczeria: Food & Wine (Saskatoon, SK) - The word "Weczeria" is an homage to Daniel and Nicole Walker's roots. Daniel is of Ukrainian ancestry and Nicole is of Polish ancestry; together they chose Weczeria, the Ukrainian word for "evening meal." Although the restaurant's cuisine is not Ukrainian, the couple's heritage influences their preference for local ingredients and their desire to feed people the way they were fed growing up, how good Ukrainians feed people: with heart and hospitality.
