Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Atlanta United came back to level their match at Soldier Field on Saturday, forcing an own goal, but then conceded a late winner to lose in Chicago. Go back and listen to the conversations I had with Ronny Deila and Ronald Hernandez after the match, the frustration is felt by everyone at the moment and they've got to find a way to turn that around quickly as they're next on the pitch in Austin on Wednesday (with gameday high temps set for 106) and back home to face Philadelphia on Saturday.Minnesota dealt Miami their 4th loss in their last 5 games, and barely had the ball in doing so. Danny Musovski in rarefied air for Seattle with goals in five straight games for the Sounders, scoring in their 3-1 win at Houston. NY Red Bulls defeated LA Galaxy 7-0 Saturday night, the worst ever loss for the Galaxy in their 30-year history.Vancouver, after their comeback 2-2 draw against LAFC last night, leads the Supporters' Shield race in MLS while Atlanta is in the bottom five in the league standings. A Classic El Clásico as Barcelona defeated Real Madrid for the fourth time this season, the first time that's been done since 1983. Madrid scored twice in the first 15 minutes through Kylian Mbappe, whose hat trick was wasted, but Barcelona had taken a 3-2 lead 20 minutes after his second goal and then added a 4th before halftime. The second half saw Mbappe complete his hat trick, a number of controversial referee decisions, and Barcelona celebrate essentially winning the league title as they only need one more point in their remaining matches. The managerial carousel is spinning in Madrid, as we expected. Fabrizio Romano reporting this morning that the deal is done for Xabi Alonso to join Real Madrid, and it will happen in time for the FIFA Club World Cup this summer. It will be a three-year contract. The semifinals are set in Mexico's Clausura as Club America will face Cruz Azul and Tigres will face Toluca. Alex Zendejas scored both goals in Las Aguilas win to set up another Mexico City derby, he has to be part of the USMNT this summer as he's had another strong season for Club America. Crazy scenes at the end of the Nottingham Forest 2-2 draw with Leicester as confusion over a late substitution and injury led to sort-of owner Evangelos Marinakis going out on the field and yelling at manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Bad look, but jumping to say that Nuno should resign over it was also over the top. Inter has cut Napoli's lead in Serie A down to one point after winning in a thunderstorm at Torino while Napoli was held to a draw by Genoa in Naples. Plenty more in the Espresso video and audio forms including my thoughts on the whistles at Trent Alexander-Arnold in Liverpool, the dangers of fan-led pitch invasions in celebration, and the risks of pregame and postgame social media trash talk from clubs. More Espresso tomorrow on the SDH Network, presented by our friends at Oglethorpe University.

Niko and Jeremiah are back together for another installment of “What we learned this week” and they're mostly focused on how the Sounders will cope with Jordan Morris likely being out at least six weeks. There's no sugar-coating that the injury diagnosis was bad, but there is reason to think that it won't be a season-killer. First and foremost, both of them like the way Danny Musovski has been playing and how he projects going forward. They also like what they're hearing about Osaze De Rosario, the Tacoma Defiance striker who is off to a blazing start this year.Of course, they also find time to give Stefan Frei his flowers for hitting 400 appearances with the Sounders and give a scouting report on Saturday's opponent, St. Louis City.Sponsor

For a few glorious moments, it felt like the Sounders had scored a hard-fought win over the top team in the Western Conference. The seeming clincher came deep into stoppage time when Reed Baker-Whiting intercepted a pass, drove forward, shrugged off a defender and calmly delivered a pass to Danny Musovski, who hit a sliding shot into the net. Musovski, who has had a few terrible misses in recent weeks, looked particularly relieved. Baker-Whiting, who has been working himself back from a six-month injury absence, let out a roar that had to be particularly cathartic. Except it didn't happen. Well, at least not officially. VAR flagged Musovski's challenge that started the sequence for review and the referee ultimately decided to wave off hte goal. Less than a minute after the ball was put back into play, RSL had the equalizer when the Sounders failed three separate opportunities to clear the danger. Instead of a potential season-defining win, the Sounders were instead stuck with more frustrating dropped points. In a season of depressing results, this feels like a low point. LAFC takes the show on the road as the Black and Gold take on Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto. Filly and Scarf cover everything that went down in Salt Lake and so much more here on Episode 207!As LAFC heads to the All-Star break, there was one more foe to vanquish before a little break, the cobalt-and-claret clad club from Salt Lake. On paper, it was a bit of a mismatch: No Damir Kreilach, no Bobby Wood, and no recently-acquired Danny Musovski, all out with injury. Recent acquisitions Bryan Oviedo and Braian Ojeda have not yet joined the squad, and the club just jettisoned David Ochoa to the nation's capital. Meanwhile, Gareth Bale, Brian Rodriguez, Latif Blessing, Mamadou Fall, Ryan Hollingshead, and the two Sebastians, Mendez and Ibeagha, we all NOT starting for an uber-talented LAFC squad that is still waiting on the arrival of their newest shiny toy, designated player Denis Bouanga. Would the matchup play out as lopsided as it looked on paper? Yes.LAFC wasted no time getting on the scoresheet as Chicho Arango puts away a Vela free kick with a stunning back-heel goal. RSL equalized just three minutes later off a goal from Cordova, but LAFC got right back out in front when Kellyn Acosta connected on a banger from outside the box. The effort by Mahala to keep that play alive allowed LAFC to enter the half on top.RSL started out the second half on the front foot, pushing LAFC's backline and controlling much of the possession. Not much got through, but RSL definitely pushed the pace out of the locker room. After a near miss in the 50', when Ilie had to clear one off the back line, LAFC grabbed control of the game because of another great play by Mahala. After beating his man 1v1, a perfect pass across the mouth of the goal found an open Chicho for a 3-1 lead, giving Arango 11 on the season. Just when you thought you had seen everything, Italian superstar Giorgio Chiellini tried his hand(s) at volleyball in the 69th minute, earning himself a yellow card and a chat with the AVP. Just when you thought it was safe to grab a snack or a drink, Gareth Bale provides another moment of brilliance, running around 2 defenders on his way into the box and drilling one past Zac MacMath for the fourth goal of the match. The team really was the star; it was the team in Black and Gold. LAFC remain on their pace to break more records and win their first cup. Also on this episode, Scarf has a crazy idea: replace the three LAFC All-Stars with three different LAFC players! Filly has a little trouble with Franco Escobar's first name while the boys both chat about the other leagues beginning their seasons. It's a fun one here on 207!

Urban Pitch Podcast - The Beautiful Game of Life

"MOOOOOOOSE!" It's a chant you'll routinely hear at LAFC's Banc of California Stadium any time forward Danny Musovski starts/enters a game, scores a goal, or does anything else significant on the pitch. The 27-year-old Las Vegas native has quickly become a favorite amongst the LAFC faithful since signing on with the team in 2020, and he's broken out as a capable goal scorer for the black and gold. It's a new week. But the table remains the same in MLS. Thanks to a 2-0 victory at the Banc on Sunday night, LAFC sits atop the Western Conference with 22 points. Max and Vince take us through the win against Minnesota United. LAFC added to its league-leading tally of goals from substitutes as Ryan Hollingshead and Jose Cifuentes found the back of the net off the bench. The guys break down Minnesota's low block and conservative approach to the match. Will we see more teams try the same when they visit LA? After that, we look ahead to the Best in the West vs Best in the East clash between LAFC and the Philadelphia Union this Saturday. Vince gives a scouting report of what to expect from the Union and Max is back on the call with Jordan Harvey on KCOP13. Then, it's time to let our guest loose. Danny Musovski sits down with the guys to talk about getting love from the fans, what it takes to be a finisher, his relationship with Chicho Arango, and more.

Steve talks about LAFC's thought process when it comes to in-game management and what Danny Musovski brings to the team. Then, it's on to our theme. LAFC will have 5 of 7 matches at home in May (lafc.com/tickets) and Steve recently purchased a new home, so what better time to talk about home? It's matchday in Cincinnati as LAFC takes on FCC in TQL Stadium. Just four days removed from Open Cup triumph over our former stepbrothers, OCSC, LAFC would take on their second straight USL oppon... err... the relative MLS newcomers in what many worried would be somewhat of a trap game. But this is not the LAFC of old! Though the trap was set, LAFC would come away with all three points behind more second-half dominance and defeat Cincy 2-1.  It definitely didn't start out rosy in the Queen City, as Doneil Henry picks up a bad yellow just six minutes in and then compounds the issue with an injury before 30 minutes. Sebastian Ibeagha would relieve him, but pick up a yellow just minutes into his shift. Not the most inspiring of performances from two of our center backs. Couple that with a puzzling decision, or lack thereof, by the PRO refs to NOT look at what seemed to be a clear takedown in the box of Carlos Vela, and LAFC looked content to head into the half knotted at zero. Until...Right before halftime, Maxime Crepeau turns the ball over in the middle of the pitch and Cincy turns it into gold. Luci Acosta pounces and Cincinnati heads into the locker room up a goal. It would be up to Steve Cherundolo to make the right halftime moves yet again.Just before the hour mark, Kellyn Acosta fires from well outside the box to find an equalizer, with a little help from a deflection. Twenty minutes later, super-sub Danny Musovski scores LAFC's MLS-leading 6th goal from a substitute to take the lead and all three points. LAFC leaves the home of Skyline Chili a winner and remains at the top of the table in both the West and the Shield race. A huge thank you to LAFC for allowing us to join dozens of supporters at the 1800 Tequila event at House of Football, and a huge thank you to Saturdays Football for allowing us to record onsite after the match!

For the first time since 2019, the U.S. Open Cup is Back at the Banc! LAFC hosts their former USL affiliate, Orange County Soccer Club, in a 3rd Round Open Cup clash, and your boys Filly and Scarf are here to break down all the fun of the 5-1 win.Open Cup matches at the Banc are always a fun time. You can hang out in Figueroa Club, get to know USL clubs, and these matches are another great excuse to just be at the Banc. You also get to know your roster a little more deeply, as players who are a little further down the depth chart get a little more burn than usual. While we aren't sure our neighbors from behind the Orange Curtain will feel that way after this match, we sure did enjoy the start of the 2022 Open Cup. John McCarthy, Danny Musovski, Sebastian Ibeagha, and Cal Jennings would all play vital roles in this match, and with Pancho Ginella, Doneil Henry, and Franco Escobar all getting starting nods, it's safe to say everyone in attendance got a good look at the depth of MLS's most talented roster. Chicho Arango continued his hot streak, netting a brace before halftime, and the Moose ran wild at the Banc with a brace of his own. Jennings, last year's leading scorer for the Las Vegas Lights, capped the scoring for the Black and Gold, but the biggest story of the match seemed to be a new role for Carlos Vela, albeit a temporary one: Vela at the 6. With Vela playing the Ilie Sanchez role, the ball moved around the pitch with accuracy and speed, and, in combination with Kellyn Acosta, LAFC's passing was crisp and clean. Also, you may have noticed 188 was released before 187... we talk about that on the pod, too! We really appreciate all the love and support, especially in the bit of a rough spot the Defenders is in with the loss of our beloved mascot, family member, and best-dressed cat on the planet. We feel you, Defenders Nation! Enjoy 188!

LAFC 2.0 is on and poppin', and for the first time in our club's history, the Black and Gold took the pitch without Bob Bradley. The Steve Cherundolo Era begins in earnest, and it's against a familiar preseason foe, the New England Revolution.Forgoing much of the usual News and Notes of most Defenders episodes (to be covered in Episode 180!), Filly and the Scarf get right in to all the action in our first preseason match of Season 5! (Right after a little This Date In LAFC History, of course…)Many of the new faces would have to wait to make their LAFC debuts. Maxime Crepeau and Kellyn Acosta were both in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada waiting to face each ther in a World Cup Quaifier, while Ilie Sanchez and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi were unavailable as well. LAFC mainstay Eddie Segura is still working himself back to 100%, while Latif Blessing, Chiqui Palacios, and Jose Cifuentes all were held back as well. However, some of the “new new” was at the Banc, including Franco Escobar, our new #2 on the back line. Also starting was future backup keeper John McCarthy. It was a back and forth first half, with most of the excitement centered around a rather silly red card earned by Jesus Murillo in the 25'. Scoreless until just before the half time whistle, Adam Buksa put a rebound past McCarthy, and LAFC entered the half down 1-0. And, oh by the way, you can replace a player who gets a red, as long as it's preseason! The second half saw a ton of changes for LAFC. Trialists, fringe roster players, and Mamadou Fall all took the pitch in the second half. Tomas Romero took over in goal, Cal Jennings, Mahala, Danny Musovski, and Danny Trejo all played up top, but it was late super-sub Bruce El-Mesmari who created the big chance for LAFC. Taken down in the box in the 85', the PK was converted by Fall, and the match ended 1-1. All in all, it was an entertaining start to the new era at LAFC. 25 different players took the pitch, our new coach coached, and we loved every minute of it. And we are looking forward to covering EVERY single minute of it here on Defenders of the Banc! Join us for Season 5!

For the final time in 2021, the boys are at World Famous Filimonster Studios to record an episode of “The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth”, Defenders of the Banc! There is SO much news to discuss since our pasting at the hands of the Commerce City Rapids, and Filly and Scarf try to get to ALL of it! This offseason saw, without a doubt, the most significant player movement of any of our first four seasons. El Profe, Eduard Atuesta, is gone, and not to a club that many could have predicted. Eduard gets to try to make it a Copa Libertadores three-peat for Brazil's Palmeiras. Also gone is the only coach we have ever known, Bob Bradley, as he heads north of the border to drink Labatt's and coach his son, Michael, at Toronto. He's been given the keys to the kingdom, eh, as he was named both head gaffer and Sporting Director at TFC. Also gone is an unsung hero who truly has been there from the beginning, Defender of the Banc Tristan Blackmon. Picked with our second ever SuperDraft pick in 2018, Tristan leaves behind a legacy of grit, toughness, and a fun social media follow. Who will play keeper? With Jamal Blackman being given his walking papers and Pablo Sisniega traded to the new Al Raitt FC, Charlotte, Tomas Romero is the only keeper under contract as of the recording of Episode 178. Also gone, as of now, are Raheem Edwards, Jordan Harvey, Daniel Crisostomo, Alvaro Quezada, and Michee Ngalina. LAFC has also begun to re-tool, or “tweak”, as JT put it, by bringing in two players with bona fide MLS Cup experience. The newest Defender of the Banc, Franco Escobar, comes to us by way of Atlanta United, where he scored the second goal in their 2-0 MLS Cup win over Portland in 2018. The Argentinian looks to help the Black and Gold on the wings. Fresh off winning MLS Cup with NYCFC in 2021, then being drafted by Charlotte in the Expansion Draft, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi lands with LAFC by way of a trade with MLS's newest club. In the mold of a Danny Musovski-type, or, dare we say, Adama Diomande, Israel knows how to put the ball in the back of the net and provides much-needed depth when Chicho, Rayito, or Vela are off the pitch.      And don't forget, Defenders… we also get a full season of Chicho Arango, a healthy Eddie Segura, and (at least) a full half-season of a healthy Carlos Vela. (We explain, don't worry.) All we need now is a head coach. And a starting center midfielder. And a starting keeper. And a little more depth. Also on this episode, we celebrate Chicho Arango taking home the Newcomer of the Year Award for 2021, the U19's as they advance in Open Cup Qualifying, and Lee Nguyen's NWSL trophy! We get a new toy in Filimonster Studios, we circle some key dates on the calendar that we are looking forward to, and Scarf doesn't have Covid (according to two tests) even though he feels and sounds like death. Which inaugural team player signed to coach with Sister Jean over at Loyola-Chicago? How is Diego Rossi doing in Turkey or Christian Ramirez in Scotland? And why does Filly now have a vested interest in our eMLS player? You'll have to listen to find out! Finally, stick around for the end, please. We know it's long, but Filly and Scarf both chat about their New Year's Resolutions, or as Filly says, goals for 2022. This may be it for 2021, but we can't wait to experience what's in store for 2022! Defenders Nation, thank you, and we love you! Here's to all the best in 2022 to the millions… and millions!

The #SeasonWithinTheSeason kicked off this past weekend. LAFC did its part with a 3-1 win over San Jose. But the Black & Gold didn't get any help this time around, as it remains four points adrift of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Max and Vince are here to break down the win over San Jose. It was a stellar first half for the Black & Gold. Danny Musovski started the scoring, forming a great partnership with Chicho Arango up top. Despite squandering a few chances, LAFC finished the half up 2-0. Max and Vince talk about the top performers from the half and what they liked about LAFC's approach to the match. The second half was a bit nervy after the Earthquakes cut the lead to 2-1. But Brian Rodriguez, fresh off a plane from Brazil, sealed the match with a great run and assist to Chicho. We talk about what the win means as all the teams ahead of LAFC also picked up 3 points. Then it's a look ahead to a long road trip and two quick matches in succession in Dallas and Minnesota. Major League Soccer might have tried to keep Filly and The Scarf out of Austin by scheduling a Wednesday away match, but nothing could keep LAFC's own Moose, Danny Musovski, from rampaging through Q2 Stadium! LAFC comes out of Texas with three points, beating Austin FC, 2-1. For the first of several times in the match, the soccer gods smiled upon LAFC early, wiping off an Austin goal in the 4th minute to keep the match scoreless. The first half was a bit of a snoozer the rest of the way, and LAFC enters the locker room in a scoreless battle. The second half would be very different, as LAFC came out firing, mainly off the boots of Jose Cifuentes. It was just before the hour mark that LAFC captured lightning in a bottle, as Kim Moon-Hwan worked his magic in the box and fired a cross that glanced off the outstretched elbow of Diego Fagundez. Upon further review, a penalty was awarded, and Chicho Arango, much to the delight of both Filly and Barry Manilow fans around the world, slotted it home to give LAFC the lead. LAFC was carved up for an easy goal several minutes later, as Fagundez atoned for his previous mishap, but LAFC did not relent. In the 85', a beautiful pass by Jose Cifuentes sprung Danny Musovski, and the Moose knew exactly what to do with the opportunity. Moose slots it past Brad Stuver and LAFC holds on for the 2-1 win. Three points on the road, three wins in a row, and LAFC is rocketing up the Western Conference standings. As the episode kicks off, Filly and Scarf engage in a Barry Manilow vs. Simply Red duel for the ages. LAFC signs another keeper from the deep end of the pool, the boys swoon over the new Mets documentary, and absolutely no mentions of TGLA occur on this pod. We bemoan Don Garber's scheduling, we begin to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, and we continue to wait for another Las Vegas Lights victory. It's a fun pod for the boys, made even better by taking all three points on the road from FC Broccoli!

Los Angeles Football Club dropped points again at home in a 4 - 1 embarrassment against now Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City. The starting lineup had to see some big changes at the back with Eddie Segura out for the season, after having a procedure to repair his ACL and Jesus Murillo being sat with a minor injury to his hamstring with no return date in site. SKC came out with a plan to give the black and gold a taste of their own medicine. They pressed the black and gold back line and were successful in disrupting buildup play in the LAFC defensive half. A few times, SKC was able to quickly transition from their high press to their counterattack with a numerical advantage. LAFC gave up three goals in the first half. All of them came from turnovers in possession, two of which SKC went the length of the field to score. The second half saw LAFC take their effort to another level, but it saw more goal scoring chances go unconverted. After LAFC gave up a 4th goal to the visitors, Danny Musovski got a cancellation goal to avoid the shutout. This was a deflating loss for the Black and Gold faithful as it is the third game in a row when LAFC didn't take 3pts at the final whistle. LAFC will look to turn things around away this Sunday with a 4pm kickoff at PayPal Park against the San Jose Earthquakes. This gives them an opportunity to expel this bad taste in their mouth from their home loss. The 3 keys to the match are clear and obvious: 1). no mistakes in possession in the defensive half that lead to counterattacking situations for the opponent, 2). finish the clear cut goal scoring opportunities inside the 18, and 3). when adversity hits during the game, an immediate response of effort, energy and intelligence is mandatory. The pressure is mounting on Bob Bradley to right the ship. If three points is not taken this weekend, the black and gold could drop out of a playoff spot. This game is important to get the second half of the MLS regular season started on the front foot. In this fourteenth episode of the 2021 season, writers-at-Large Alex Dwyer (from Yokohama, Japan), alongside in-house tactician Pierce Maher, and guest appearances from Ben Bjelajac aka Benny Blanco and Sam Ko aka Slim from our sister podcast the FCFC pod breakdown LAFC's worst loss in recent memory at home to Sporting Kansas City.
