FOP 020: The Future of Reforestation with Jeff Debell

The Forest Overstory Podcast

Jeff Debell is a forest geneticist working with the WA Department of Natural Resources, tasked with exploring strategies for growing trees in a changing climate. With increasingly hot and dry summers, reforestation has already become more challenging than usual. The health of future forests may be improved by or depend on innovative reforestation practices we implement today. One key practice is population migration, the practice of moving genetic populations within a given species in order to adapt to projected climate conditions (ex: planting Doug-fir from Oregon in Washington). In this episode, we discuss some critical research Jeff is conducting on this population migration and how small forest owners can support it.

SHOW NOTES   In this episode, Miguel Aragoncillo chats with me about how we can use the environment as a way to “discover movement” like dancing, jumping, squatting and much more. The use of the ground, wind, and visual surroundings are just a few ways were we can challenge our bodies (and brains) to “feel” movements. The results are a better understanding of how your body moves and how to calibrate accuracy of movements, by knowing what inaccuracy feels like. Thank you for reaching out to me about this podcast Miguel. I had a great time chatting and thanks for sharing. Let’s keep in touch and keep the conversation going!   Links Website Philosophy Creating a New Attractor Well for Behavior Non-Linear Behavior for Sports Performance   Miguel Aragoncillo Bio: I am currently working as a strength coach at Cressey Sports Performance in Massachusetts. Prior to working at CSP, I was employed with Endeavor Sports Performance in New Jersey, and was working alongside Kevin Neeld and co, working with several types of athletes and individuals – namely private youth hockey organization and a private travel baseball organization, functioning as the strength coach in their Pennsylvania location. When working with these athletes and clients, priority is taken to ensure quality movement is pursued, along with optimal exercise selection for that specific individual. Many who read these bios expect a long and prolific athletic career riddled with letters and achievements in their respective sports. I have had none of them, and I did quite badly at most sports during my adolescence. However, with this weakness I turned it into a strength, as this allowed me the opportunity to try breakdancing at my own pace, with no rules and no boundaries to limit me. I disliked running, so soccer was fairly uncomfortable for me to complete to say the least. I remained the same height from the age of 15 on, so basketball was already a limited choice from a genetic standpoint. I also didn’t particularly enjoy getting hit in the mouth at age 12 when I was playing baseball, so I gave up that sport fairly quickly. So, armed with my genetic limitations and lack of coordination, I stubbornly pressed on to breakdance my way to athleticism with time, effort, and determination. Now, I take great pride in the work that I’ve devoted to helping dancers all along the east coast hosting multiple booths, workshops, and individual assessments, all while aiding individual dancers to prepare for a large spectrum of movements while preparing for performances and competitions. I hold a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist certification through the National Strength & Conditioning Association, and Health Fitness Specialist certification through the American College of Sports Medicine. Further, I’ve received my Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science from Temple University, located in Philadelphia, PA.   Sebastian’s Youtube Channel Attention Docs and Fitness Professionals: Access your client educational products, banners and posters here. SHOW NOTES I reached out to Dr. Ryan DeBell DC, of The Movement Fix, to help young clinicians, trainers and students develop businesses similar to his… if they desired. Dr. DeBell started a solo practice on his own. During his first few months of practice, he was able to successfully make $4000 in one day teaching at a seminar. Wow! This popularity lead to speaking engagements, workshops, podcasts, videos, and online content creation. Sky’s the limit. During our conversation, he mentioned he has been able to grow his online business so much that he had to choose if he wanted to practice full-time or spend more time online. He picked online… why? Because he would rather help more people with understand the basics of having a health life. If you’re a young doc who posts half-heartedly on instagram or facebook, you need to listen to this podcast. Enjoy. Quotes: “I learned to draw to improve my creativity” “A lot of times when we are talking to patients, we talk to them like they’re Picasso.” “When other people make content I think, I’m glad these people are putting themselves out there.” “The people who are going to criticise you are the ones who are afraid to do it themselves.”   Ryan DeBell’s Bio:  “I was born a skeptic and a cynic. I question everything and challenge the status quo. I have a passion for helping people become strong, pain free, and take ownership of their bodies. I believe being pain free and moving well is a fundamental human right. Information shouldn't be kept a secret when it can benefit so many people in such a large way. I graduated from the University of Washington's Foster School of Business. After realizing I didn't enjoy the work I was doing (and sitting there writing excel macros thinking about how much more I would enjoy teaching people how to become strong, pain free, and move their body) I decided to make a change. The switch lead me to the University of Western States where I earned two degrees: A master's degree in exercise and sport science and a doctorate in chiropractic. I actually have an identity crisis at times. I don't identify well with one particular group of people based on how I was trained. My job is to help people become strong, get pain free, and move their bodies well. However I achieve that is not important (through hands on therapy, exercise instruction, a video on the internet, an e-book, a podcast, etc.). I care about helping as many people as I can in whatever way possible.” Quotes: “I learned to draw to improve my creativity” “A lot of times when we are talking to patients, we talk to them like they’re Picasso.” “When other people make content I think, I’m glad these people are putting themselves out there.” “The people who are going to criticize you are the ones who are afraid to do it themselves.”   Sebastian’s Youtube Channel Attention Docs and Fitness Professionals: Access your client educational products, banners and posters here. Randy DeBell is the Operations Manager at COTM. He's also a Section Coach—which means he's a leader of leaders (and LOVES people). He has an amazing story of God's redemption and how He has brought him to where he is today. His passions are his family (including his three successful sons), hot rods, and pouring into young men. Below are Randy DeBell's notes. Speaker: Randy Debell, Church on the Move, Manager of Operations May 6th, 2016 "Real Men are Dam Builders" The dam blocks off the torrential waters of the enemy. Isaiah 59:19 "...when the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard (dam) against him." The enemy wants you dead, diseased, and addicted. Don't curl up and take what the enemy dishes out. We don't have to take it! NO WE DON'T! Fear can physically grip you, but God's Word is always true. Men be the lead, be the priest of the home, be men. Take control. Spiritual dams are built with time with the Lord. Matthew 6:33 - Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness! Commit to the Lord first! Get up early (the first fruit of the your day) and spend time with your Father. Prayers will surely be answered when God is FIRST! When you spend time with the Lord, you'll walk, talk, and act like Him. When you give to people that cannot ever pay you back, God will. What's your cause? What's your holy discontent? What makes you mad? What has God called you to do? We have to take the first step for God to to be able place our second step. What's your enemy? Lust, pride, sickness? Your relationship with Jesus Christ protects your family. When you DO NOT spend time in the Word you've opened the door and invited your enemy to come into your home. Luke 22:32 "...strengthen your brothers."

Dr. Ryan DeBell is founder of The Movement Fix. He's been doing CrossFit for 9 years. When he opened his clinic, Dr. DeBell began traveling around to CrossFit gyms with a little two-hour presentation to help lifters. After he published a watershed post, "The Best-Kept Secret: Why People Have to Squat Differently," he was invited to bring his paid seminar to over 20 boxes. That was two years ago; he's already booked for 30 weekends in 2016. This podcast presents a fresh perspective on some prevalent dogma in our community. You'll see topics like "butt wink", the "perfect" squat and foam rolling in a new light! 4:15 - "Can you have too much mobility?" 6:10 - Two types of stability 11:45 - Different methods of abdominal bracing, from wall balls to heavy cleans 15:10 - Learning and "muscle memory" 17:00 - Why your squat doesn't look like mine 18:30 - The Real Purpose of the "Butt Wink" (link to blog post) 25:20 - "Are the ones we see on TV just the ones who didn't get hurt?" 26:00 - Dr. DeBell's personal warmup process 28:50 - How your body adapts to foam-rolling 34:30 - The REAL definition of "muscle tone" 43:00 - How can we test people at intake? What's best? 48:00 - The scope of practice for coaches 50:00 - What's covered in "The Movement Fix" seminar Dr. DeBell's podcast is excellent. You'll find it here. In "Critical Questions", I turn the tables and suggest the NUMBER ONE QUESTION you should be asking your clients, your staff--and yourself. Recorded on April 12, 2016.
