Content is a critical part of marketing, as compelling, informative assets help generate more interest in a brand and drive more leads down the sales pipeline. But the content creation process is still hindered by lack of interdepartmental communication between sales and marketing. When Pam Didner takes the #B2BMX stage in just two short weeks, she'll focus on two key components of content: “How To Make The Most Of Content Marketing For Sales” and “How To Create A High-Performance Team Among Sales/Ops/Marketing.” During her sessions, Didner will tighten the lens on internal communication to help align teams on common goals and shed a light on how to map content to specific stages of the buyer's journey. With those “how-tos” in mind, Host Klaudia Tirico sat down with Didner for a preview into her sessions on the latest episode of the #B2BMX podcast. Throughout their discussion, the duo touched on: The evolution of the B2B industry, with an analysis of the fundamentals that remained and the prospect/buyer behaviors that changed; The current state of sales enablement and why the line is starting to blur between sales and marketing; The content assets that resonate most strongly with buyers and buying committees, along with how to make the most out of them; Strategies for mapping content to different stages of the buyer's journey; and Much more! On today's episode, we interview NYTF Associate Artistic Director Motl Didner who, along with Zalmen Mlotek, are in the midst of putting together A Yiddish Renaissance, A Virtual Concert Celebration. Motl took the time out of his day to conversation titled “Putting It All Together” is a full on in depth background of the Yiddish Renaissance, the rise of Yiddish in our pop culture, and a behind the scenes look at piecing together a full scale online concert featuring over 140+ artists. So let's take it away to Motl Didner.
Motl Didner, associate art director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF), and NYTF literary manager Sabina Brukner talk with The Shmooze about their upcoming Yiddish Women Playwrights Festival, which gives women playwrights center stage at the NYTF. The festival kicks off with Chava Rosenfarb's The Bird of the Ghetto, which chronicles the attempted Vilna Ghetto uprising and the tragic story of Jewish resistance leader Itsik Vitenberg, commander of the United Partisan Organization. The virtual reading is produced by Didner, who notes, "As we commemorate the 78th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising [on April 19, 1943], the true story behind The Bird of the Ghetto is a moving testament to the bravery and resilience of the Jewish resistance during the Holocaust." A big hello from Portland, Oregon. I interviewed Neal Schaffer on my past week’s podcast. What do you think? Like I said, I am planning to juxtapose the episodes of me talking for 7 minutes at a time with guest interviews. Just want to try something new. If there are guests that you want to hear from, please send me a quick email at hello@pamdidner.com and add the questions you want to ask them. This way, I get a chance to meet new people and you get your questions answered. #winwin I am more than happy to do all the logistics to reach out. For today, I want to talk about a topic that is not getting much of the spotlight in the marketing landscape: processes and automation workflows. You are like: “Ugh, Pam, can you talk about something that is more sexy and fun? Like how to select creative that will pop? Or what are the tips and tricks to writing catchy headlines? How to run Facebook pay ads that will convert?” Well, if you Google those topics, you’ll find many, many outstanding blogs and videos out there that cover these topics. One thing I do want to share with you, though: you can read forever, but at the end of the day, you need to practice and implement. That’s the best way to learn. So if you have budget and don’t want to do the work, that’s OK. Once you’ve done your reading, internalize the takeaways well enough to provide clear guidance to your agencies and the contractors so that they can do a great job for you. If you don’t want to do it, you are still responsible to convey your marketing visions and ideas clearly. Creative, design, writing, and anything content related is what you see on the front-end. I get it. We, marketers, tend to focus on the front-end and leave the back-end to IT and operations. However, for digital marketing to deliver a seamless customer experience, you need to plan out how the back-end will integrate with the front-end. So you cannot separate: “well front end is my job and the back-end is someone else’s job.” For instance, when people click “contact us,” what is the next step that needs to happen? IT and operations cannot tell you that. That’s your job to figure it out. When people sign up for your app, what email notification should they receive the first hour, the 2nd day, and the 7th day. Again, IT and operations cannot tell you that. You need to figure that out. How should their data be captured? That has a lot to do with how you are going to get your analytics. Will that be part of CRM, marketing automation, or the customer data warehouse? You need to make a decision about how the data will flow. You need to make sure that all these systems can talk to each other. For that, you need to get involved on the back-end to understand how data flows and what steps are manual or automated. You need to make that call. I’m not saying you need to code, but you do need to design the customer experience. You need to answer such question as When to send the registrant email out? When to contact the customer when they sign up for the event? How to further engage and nurture them after the event? When you address these questions, you need to set up steps and process in your systems so that actions are taken when the customers act or engage. All these require some strategic thinking to ensure a smooth online experience. From on-site events or webinars, to post-event follow-up, timely email outreach, to sales engagement, you need to visualize the process and pave the journey for your customers. Then you can have someone either code it or build a workflow to connect various systems to ensure it happens the way you envision. None of this just happens magically. It requires you to plan, think through the permutations and work on the back-end and front-end integration. I am doing that for myself and my clients. It’s tedious: testing, retesting, constantly changing the workflows, and anticipating problems. And the systems they don’t just work themselves out. Once you start going live, trust me, you run into a new of set of user issues that you don’t expect. That’s the type of tedious, detailed work that no marketers want to talk about. I hate telling you this but those processes and workflows will make or break your digital marketing. You are like, “Pam, you are stressing me out? So, what can I do?” Well, it actually depends on your job. For some of you, you probably never have to deal with the back-end. Lucky YOU! I know some content marketers just need to write the content, upload content to WordPress and check on Google Analytics. That’s it. Great!! I also know some event marketing managers that only need to worry about everything on-site, but nothing pre- or post- events. They have other members who will take care of that for them. Well, you know what, with no physical events at this time, many of those event marketing managers are forced to change and they need to build something online for events to work! And that something is really the back-end--sourcing the different platforms, integrating the process with a different system. It’s a lot of work! So regardless of your current responsibilities, I strongly suggest that you make an effort to learn how marketing as a whole works in your company. Your marketing departments may run paid social, events, email campaigns, create blog posts and videos. Try to understand how everything works. Try to understand what tools are used and how they tie together (or fail to tie together.) I encourage the marketing managers I coach to draw workflows as a way of putting their understanding of the back-end to the test. The way I see it, if you can explain your understanding in a logical flowchart, it means that you understand how things work. The biggest benefit of understanding how things work is to help connect the different dots and give you the ability to think strategically. Workflows will help you see the good, the bad, and the ugly of your digital marketing. You know where to go to get the data and you also know where the gaps are. Yes, it’s tedious and boring, but make an effort to understand the backend. You won’t regret it. The understanding of the processes behind-the-scenes will help you identify what you can do to improve the front and back-end together. Again, thank you for listening to my podcast. Podcasting is one-way communication. I don’t necessarily know who you are, but your support means a great deal to me. Feel free to ask questions on my FB community: “Build Your Marketing Skills to Get Ahead.” And when you join, you can get a free Tall Starbucks on me. I added a gift card with a barcode. You can find that in the announcement page. Again, love to hear from you. If you venture out be safe and stay healthy. Take care. Bye-bye!

Happy Purim! We throw it back to our very first episode of NYTF Radio where we sat down with Associate Artistic Director Motl Didner to discuss the history of Purim and Purim Spiels, the earliest example Yiddish theatrical performance.
Interview with Motl Didner, Artistic Director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, Director of The Sorceress (די כּישוף־מאַכערין), and Associate Director and Dialect Coach for the smash-hit production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish (פֿידלער אויפֿן דאַך). As Yiddish coach for Fiddler, Didner was the main person responsible for training the mostly non-Yiddish-speaking cast to mount the USA's first-ever Yiddish-language production of Fiddler on the Roof, resulting in a smash hit (winner of Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Lucille Lortel awards) that is still running off-Broadway at Stage42 (info: https://fiddlernyc.com). The Sorceress (Di Kishef-Makherin), which is being presented by the Folksbiene for a limited run in Yiddish with English and Russian subtitles, is an operetta written by Avrom Goldfadden, considered the father of modern Jewish theatre, in 1878. It is one of the earliest works of Yiddish theater and the first formal Yiddish theatrical production introduced in America by the celebrated Thomashefsky family. It's being performed through Dec 29 2019 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Lower Manhattan -- info here: https://nytf.org/the-sorceress Interview with Barry Goldstein, whose Yiddish translations of The Wind in the Willows (די װינט אין די װערבעס) and The Colour of Magic (דער קאָליר פֿון כּישוף) were recently published. Goldstein is active in the Yiddish literary scene, both at home in Boston and internationally: besides his translations, Goldstein was Associate Editor of the very highly regarded Comprehensive Yiddish-English Dictionary (Indiana University Press, 2013), and his Yiddish writing has appeared in the Yiddish literary journal Yidishland (ייִדישלאַנד), as well as others, in recent years. For info and links to all of Goldstein's translations, visit his web site: https://bgoldstein.org/ Goldstein's interview is by Sholem Beinfeld, a regular contributor to the Yiddish Voice, co-Editor in Chief of the Comprehensive Yiddish-English Dictionary, and Professor of History, Emeritus, Washington University, St. Louis. Dr. Beinfeld served as principal consultant on the film Partisans of Vilna (credited as Solon Beinfeld). He was senior consultant and historian to the Kovno Ghetto Exhibition project of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and consultant to the Museum on the Ghetto archive holdings in the Lithuanian State Archives in Vilnius. Someone filled out a question card at my workshop without leaving a name, but I like the question: “How to Reduce the tension between sales and marketing over timely follow up to qualified leads?” Whoever wrote the question, I just want to let you know that it’s a common issue across industries and companies. You are not alone. Marketing works hard to get leads, but sales says that the leads can’t be converted or are not ready to act on. Sometimes, they don’t even follow up… I get it. I think there are three ways to address this issue: Agree on actionable MQL definitions Focus on quality of leads, not quantity Establish a Service Level Agreement (SLA) Agree on Actionable MQL Definition I am using myself as an example here. I do a lot of research for my clients on messaging framework, SWOT analysis, persona creation, and content writing. So I download white papers, trends and reports from many websites. After downloading certain types of content, I’d get an email or a call from that company’s salesperson trying to follow-up with me. Obviously, the marketing team didn’t qualify me before they passed me to the sales team. I usually share my real first and last name. By the way, my last name Didner is not very common. If marketing had done some research on me, they would know that I am not a qualified lead and probably didn’t meet the sales’ team’s ideal customer profile (ICP). The best way to get sales to follow-up your leads in a timely manner is to make sure that you pass leads that meet their ICP. These prospects have done something on their website to indicate that they are ready to talk. I use LeadGenius as an example frequently, their MQL definition is someone who matches sales ICP and has raised a hand to request a demo. When this lead is passed to sales, sales knows that this person wants to see the demo, therefore, it’s a hot lead. Sales has a big incentive to follow-up right away. Focus on quality, not quantity Many marketing groups are tasked with an aggressive goal, such as 2000 leads per month. For 2000 leads a month, that’s 100 leads per day based on 20 working days. If you are looking for 100 highly qualified leads, you’ll need to amp that to 400 leads per day assuming a 25% conversion rate. People like me may be perceived as a high-qualified lead who came to your website and downloaded several pieces of highly valuable content. But a high lead score based on content consumption, in this case, doesn’t mean that I am a highly-qualified prospect. Continuous nurturing won’t convert me, either, given that I’m only interested in white papers or trend reports, not necessarily about the products and services. It’s important to have a frank conversation between sales and marketing about goal setting. A high number of leads doesn’t equate to high quality leads. Sales want as many leads as possible, I get it. But it may be unreasonable to task marketing to get all those leads, especially if the budget is small. Leads are not free. Driving outbound campaigns for inbound leads is not free, either. You need to correlate your budget with lead goals and educate the sales and management team to understand that. Establish a Service Level Agreement (SLA) To ensure that sales performs timely follow-up on leads try to set up an SLA and ask the sales team to commit to follow-up on the leads within a certain amount of time, like 48-72 hours after a lead is assigned to them. Of course, you need to make sure that you have a dashboard in place to track that follow-up. If they aren’t keeping up, have a conversation with them. Here is the truth: you’ll have sales people that follow the SLA and you’ll also have sales people that don’t. Maybe you can also do the correlation analysis to see if salespeople who follow-up on your leads have a higher probability of meeting their sales goals than those who don’t. Use the data to have a conversation with those who aren’t following up in a timely manner. Salespeople are motivated by data. If you can show them that timely follow-up of your leads help them, they’ll do it. Hopefully, the data is on your side. This is very common issue on the marketing side. I want to let everyone know that you are not alone. If anyone of you have other ways to address with this issue, please let me know. I am more than happy to share your best practices with everyone and give you credit as well. Again, if you like the podcast, please leave comments on iTunes. Keep hustling, my friends. You got this.
