Zach Williams is the founding member and frontman for The Lone Bellow, an Americana Folk featuring Zach, Kanene Donehey Pipkin and Brian Elmquist. Best known for their powerhouse vocals and emotive blend of folk, country, and soul, the storied trio exploded onto the scene in 2014 with their self-titled debut, which made a bunch of end-of-year lists and garnered praise from respected outlets like People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and NPR, who lovingly dubbed them an ‘earnest and magnetic folk-pop [trio] built to shake the rafters.'Zach got into songwriting after a personal tragedy—his wife, who was paralyzed in a horseback riding accident, inspired him to channel his grief into music. He'd been writing songs for a few years but the accident pushed him into bolder creative spaces and out into the NYC folk scene. Rockwood Music Hall, a mainstay of many an indie folk musician, played a key early role in Williams' success. Initially performing as a solo artist, Williams eventually brought in Pipkin and Elmquist, both of whom shared a similar passion for Americana music and storytelling. The trio quickly became a tight-knit unit, blending their diverse influences into a distinctive sound that continues to turn heads a decade later. The Bellow moved to Nashville in 2016, made a bunch more records, and shortly after this taping, performed a live concert with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.Zach and I sat down to talk about the evolution of his music and career, now in its second decade. Among the things I wanted to know was what he —at the outset of his creative journey — imagined a successful career to look like, versus what it eventually became. We touched on those early days, how the music scene has changed with the domination of Spotify and its ilk. He also played one live in the studio. If you're feeling what we do, take a second to like and subscribe. It helps a lot. Thanks for listening! Men kommunen burde have vidst, hvad der skete. Og derfor skal det også koste, at de tidligere elevers historier er blevet anerkendt. On the night of February 8th/early morning hours of February 9th, 2018, 24-year-old David Scott Elmquist died in a fire that was started in his apartment after the Bakken crude oil covering his body caught fire, and he suffered burns to over 90% of his body, soot-filled airways, and blindness. To investigators, this was a simple open and closed case of suicide, but to David's family and many others, he may have been the victim of foul play as well as evidence planting. There are many strange reasons concerning this case as to why there's no way David could have killed himself, according to his family. From the mysterious untouched patches of skin on his wrists when the rest of his flesh was burned to the missing lighter, unlocked door, and planted knives at the scene, this case is so hard not to think about. Long-term care facilities were ground zero for COVID-19 deaths early in the pandemic. Then, residents struggled with profound isolation after family members and friends were banned or discouraged from visiting to keep out the virus. Now there's a new crisis facing long-term care. Overwhelmed by long hours, low pay and COVID exposure, people who work in long-term care facilities are quitting their jobs in record numbers. As the pandemic stretches into a third year, the chronic staffing problem in nursing homes and assisted living facilities has intensified. As of this fall, three quarters of long-term care facilities in Minnesota were limiting admissions. Gov. Tim Walz responded to the labor shortage by sending National Guard nursing teams to struggling facilities and promising to train more certified nursing assistants. Last week, President Joe Biden released a list of proposals to improve long-term care, including a call for minimum staffing levels. Many nursing home operators are wondering where they'll find workers. MPR News host Angela Davis spoke with long-term care experts about the quality, cost and future of long-term care in Minnesota. Guests: Rajean Moone is the faculty director for long-term care administration in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies at the University of Minnesota. He also serves as associate director of education for the Center for Healthy Aging and Innovation in the School of Public Health. Aisha Elmquist is deputy ombudsman for long-term care for the state of Minnesota, a program of the Minnesota Board on Aging. The ombudsman office has representatives around the state and acts as an advocate for the health, safety and rights of long-term care consumers. For more information or to raise a concern or complaint visit www.mn.gov/ooltc. Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS. Hear their conversation using the audio player above and read the highlights below. There are more than 23,000 care positions vacant in Minnesota, said Rajean Moone, an expert in long-term care administration at the University of Minnesota. “This is all hands on deck. If you work in a nursing home, you may be an accountant, but some days, you may also be working in the kitchen serving food.” “Since the pandemic, it is worsened considerably,” said Aisha Elmquist, Minnesota's deputy ombudsman for long-term care. At one facility, Elmquist said that one day residents were served only peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, with no breakfast or dinner. She called it an “extreme example” — but one that reflects a trend her office now sees with lack of proper staffing. “These are vulnerable adults, and somebody has to have a voice for them, and it has to be us,” said Barbara, a registered nurse and caller from St. Louis Park. She said that to encourage health workers to stay in the long-term care profession, they should be paid like professionals. “According to the most recent numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we're looking at about $14 an hour for a certified nursing assistant in a nursing home,” said Moone. “A certified nursing assistant in another health care setting would make significantly more than that.” When understaffed facilities close, residents and their families can find themselves stuck. Jacob, a caller from St. Paul, said his family had recently been notified that the long-term care facility where his disabled sister lives, would soon be forced to close. He said she would end up in a crisis care center. “We don't have any other options for her,” he said. For others, the cost of long-term care is enormous, and families might pay tens of thousands or more than $100,000 in a year, for a resident to live in a private room with access to 24-hour skilled care. Those who depend on Medicaid waivers have more limited options, Elmquist said. In Minneapolis, Beth called in to share her experiences from coordinating staffing at a local nursing home. “It's chaos,” she said. “Every day people leave the floor openly weeping. This was 2018. This was pre-COVID. We needed the National Guard in 2018.” Share your story Have you been impacted by short staffing in long-term care?

There are some studies which claim that the human attention span continues to decrease and might be as low as 8 seconds – that's lower than a goldfish. While there are other studies which claim that humans were always cognitively distracted and hyper-alert creatures, which enabled us to accomplish complex tasks while still being aware of our surroundings. Well, either way, one thing is true – the sheer amount of information around us is increasing, and as a result, we are always competing for the attention of our audiences. How do we create an enthralling enough experience, that could capture an audience for 10 mins, 30 mins, 2 hours? Which is why, today, I am joined by two individuals who have mastered the art of creating compelling customer engagements – Cyril Rathogwa and Lars Elmquist! My guest, Cyril, is a passionate football enthusiast and storyteller. He is a senior solutions adviser in the Intelligent Spend Business Network covering the entire Africa continent. In this week's episode, I sit down with Brian Elmquist. One of the three key vocalists and lead guitarist for The Lone Bellow. Elmquist discusses his introduction to the stage while playing guitar in his childhood sanctuary, brightly illuminated with a neon pink cross. Brian's journey as a musician took Brian from his small town in Georgia to Nashville, to New York City, and back to Nashville, where he currently resides with his wife and children. Brian discusses Lone Bellow's rise, his current collaboration with LA-based producer and friend Justin Glasco, Joyclub, and finding a home in producing and music creation. Brian is an incredible songwriter, musician, and human being. Please enjoy my conversation with the one and only Mr. Brian Elmquist.

Brian Elmquist & Justin Glasco are longtime friends & collaborators. After touring the world together they created a new project called JOYCLUB. Recently they released their new EP “Just a Dream.” We discuss the new EP, life on the road with The Lone Bellow, to their first time on Letterman. It’s a fun discussion filled with great stories, songwriting, & producing tips. Check it out!
It's always refreshing when a musician takes a step back and realizes they have more to say than what their current offering might allow them to. Ahhh yes the side project, that's it—It's Kind of like having a mistress, except there is usually considerably less drama, though there are always exceptions (insert crazy side project band drama story here). It's even more refreshing when that side project unleashes something completely different than what you're used to hearing from that particular artist—and that's exactly what we get with Brian Elmquist and JOY CLUB. Better known for his role as singer/songwriter/guitarist and 1/3 of The Lone Bellow, Brian decided to try something different this time. JOY CLUB is the collaborative musical effort of Brian and long time friend and producer Justin Glasco. JOY CLUB became the outlet for all things experimental when it came to the music that both Brian and Justin were accustomed to. But for Elmquist, it was about more than just experimenting with new sounds and ideas. JOY CLUB became a place to process the hardships, truths, and vulnerabilities that come with sobriety, which for Elmquist was something brand new, just like JOY CLUB. We had the pleasure of catching up with Brian, whom we all consider to be a good friend to talk about all things JOY CLUB, the new EP, The Lone Bellow, sobriety, and how he's navigating the difficulties of being a creative during a pandemic. It's season two episode eleven of your favorite grocery store clerk's favorite music podcast. LET'S GO! Find JOY CLUB on facebook! Check out the new EP "Just A Dream" here! A major silver lining of the current pandemic is that one can find usually VERY BUSY people at home, and eager to chat. One-time stranger, longtime friend Mr. Brian Elmquist has been very busy in recent years on the road around the world with his spectacularly popular 'Americana' band, The Lone Bellow. But I was able to catch up with him at home in Nashville with his lovely wife and beautiful kids and chat about a whole lot of things including his LIVE streaming concert on Instagram TONIGHT at 10 EST for the great NYC venue Rockwood Music Hall, where I used to see him play back when he was still waiting tables at Dizzy's Diner near my apartment in Brooklyn. Despite the sadly disrupted concert tour for The Lone Bellow's fabulous new album, Half Moon Light, Brian and the gang are still connecting to fans in creative ways, like this show on Instagram tonight to which you can buy tickets here to support @brianelmquist and @rockwoodmusichall. What I have loved about Brian since I first met him at Dizzy's is his incredible desire and talent for connecting to people in a real and honest way. I saw it in his eyes and heard it in his voice when first I saw him play at Rockwood. "You were like an angel," I told him during the podcast. And he was humble in receiving the compliment, as he is, but it's true. Brian first learned to perform in church growing up in Georgia, and his faith--in family, in community, in people, in life - is evident in his music and in talking to him, which I love to do every chance I get. Brian's commitment to building strong communities for all is no more evident than in his performance on behalf of my nonprofit InspireCorps for the kids at PS81. Watch the awesome video here, donated by Brian and his friend James Cernero. And listen in to this great conversation with Mr. Elmquist, at home.

Absolutely not! Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Jen Elmquist joins us to break through the stigma of taking care of our hearts and minds the way we take care of our bodies. We talk about what couples therapy is, when might be a good time to try it, and how her book, Relationship Reset, can get us heading in the right direction without even sitting down on The Couch.Links in this episode: Jen's book Relationship Reset, Jen’s website, Jen on Twitter and Facebook, find a therapist at goodtherapy.org or psychologytoday.com

To answer this question properly, much needs to be said by way of introduction. However, for the sake of time, allow us to outline the difference as simply as we can. We will only make three brief introductory points. First, what we believe is rooted in WHO we believe. This is not an intellectual or academic exercise. It is a living relationship with Jesus, THE Christ, the Lord of glory, our Savior. That is the reason we refuse to allow our desire to be a witness for Him to be reduced to a debate. Second, the differences in what we believe are not a matter of theological emphases. Denominations have been created over one doctrine or tradition being emphasized over another. The difference in what we believe and what most believe is the difference in eternal life and eternal death. Third, we understand, from personal experience, that the only way to savingly see the difference between the truth and a lie is by the free and sovereign grace of God. He is the only one that can make us to differ from another. So, what are the differences? 1. We do not believe God loves everybody. We believe the love of God is only to be found in Christ, and that was determined by God before the world began. (EPHESIANS 1:4) 2. We do not believe Christ died for everybody. He laid down His life for the sheep not the goats. It is not for us to try to figure out which one men are. His sheep will hear His voice and they will follow Him. Christ purposed to save His elect, and He fulfilled all He came to do. (JOHN 10:26-27; ISAIAH 42:1-4) 3. We do not believe God, in any way, wills all men to be saved. God is God. His will is always accomplished. If He willed all men to be saved then all men would be saved. The purpose of God according to election will stand (ROMANS 9:11, 8:28) 4. We do not believe man has a “free will”. Man's will is in bondage to his sinful nature. It is not free to choose Christ. Man left to himself is unable to believe. God must make him willing through the miracle of the new birth. [JOHN 3:3] 5. We do not believe the gospel is an “offer” of salvation to be accepted by man. The gospel is the declaration of the “good news” that Christ has DONE everything necessary to secure the salvation of His people. God is not waiting for us to DO something to make what Christ did work for us. (2 TIMOTHY 1:9), (“It is finished!”- JOHN 19:30). This message of grace is irresistible to the elect. 6. We do not believe our faith is the effectual cause of our salvation. The Faith OF Christ is the only faith that makes us accepted before a holy God. Gal.2:16 Our faith is a gift of God given IN, not FOR salvation. (EPHESIANS 2:8-9) 7. We do not believe the Bible is a rule book for Christian living. We believe it is in its entirety a revelation of the glorious person and accomplished work of the Lord Jesus Christ. He Himself is our rule of life. (LUKE 24:44-45) 8. In short, we believe that “salvation is of the Lord”. He gets all the glory for saving a dead dog sinner such as I. He is the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. God, our Heavenly Father, purposed the salvation of His chosen people in the covenant of grace before the world began. Christ, the Son of God, accomplished everything necessary for Righteousness and Justice on behalf of those chosen. The Holy Spirit, at the appointed time, gives the elect ears to hear and hearts to believe. He then keeps them in Christ until their sojourn in this world is over. At that time, they will see Christ in all His glory and be made like Him.
Jeff & Jody Elmquist share their story of hope, restoration, and God's unconditional love.
