Motherhood in song: jazz musician & educator Brenda Earle Stokes

I was excited to speak with Brenda Earle Stokes, an award-winning jazz musician and innovative music educator based in NYC, and originally from Sarnia, Ontario. I too was raised in small town Ontario and taught piano for years, and I love learning from how other musicians, especially other women and mothers, have approached their career growth and creative pathways. I appreciated Brenda's perspectives on creating a thriving career through hard work and problem solving. Our conversation dove right into her her musical journey, from recording a spontaneous solo album Solo Sessions at the Sarnia Public Library (2019), to the inspiration and creative process behind her latest album Motherhood (2023). Brenda shared how she wrote the first song “The Endless Wait” years ago: “I was singing literally about the experience of pregnancy and that sort of feeling that you have where you're connected to your ancestors, but you're also like wondering who this person is.” It was during an artistic residency in 2019 that she had the space and focus to write eight of the ten songs for Motherhood. “In November of 2019, I was invited to do a residency at Banff. And it was really during that… in 8 or 9 days, I wrote eight of the songs.” Brenda discussed the challenges of being a mother in the male-dominated jazz industry, and how this new album captures the multidimensional realities of motherhood beyond the typical “look at my beautiful baby” songs. “Rather than sort of this one dimensional like, ‘oh, I'm so happy I my life is so full now'… it's more for those of us who are in it. It's more of a complex experience than that, where there's like body image issues or just like, who am I now?" Brenda is not only an award-winning performing and touring musician and songwriter, she's also an in-demand music educator with a growing YouTube following challenging the way things have been done traditionally in music education: “I've taken a radically different approach than the one that I was taught. I was taught the long way. And I don't recommend it.” Her experiences have led her to focus on efficiency for students learning to play piano and sing, creating a program that priorities helping aspiring musicians do what they want to do faster: play music. Brenda reflected on the immense effort required for an independent artist, from technical skills to marketing, which led her to learn how to shoot and edit video herself: “I have an incredible amount of technical knowledge that…. wasn't even on my radar at all. So that's why I think… you have to be willing to go in and really do the work for yourself and not think that someone can give you a blueprint for it because there is no blueprint for it.”   - - - Brenda Earle Stokes is an award-winning pianist, vocalist, composer and educator. Her performance career as a leader and side musician has taken her across the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. She has performed and recorded as a bandleader and side musician with Wycliffe Gordon, Maurice Hines and the Diva Jazz Orchestra. Her seven albums showcase her original compositions and an eclectic mix of standards, contemporary pop and obscure jazz compositions. A passionate educator, she has worked as a clinician, adjudicator and panelist all over the world and runs a bustling private studio in New York City. Brenda's popular online membership The Versatile Musician contains hundreds of online courses, video tutorials and printables and has empowered hundreds of musicians worldwide to feel more confident in their musical lives. ©️ 2022 3D Jazz Trio Jackie Warren - piano Amy Shook - contrabass Sherrie Maricle - drums #bebop --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/konstantins/message

Saxophonist Idit Shner joins us to chat about moving between the classical and jazz worlds, her early love for baroque music as a young recorder player, and her thoughts on providing space for students to experience music-making across genres. Idit talks about the differences in the physical technique and the mental preparation for jazz vs. classical performance, and how this influences her approach to performing and recording. She shares her interest in exploring traditional Jewish and Zimbabwean musics, the internal grammar inherent in each piece, the role that her local musical community plays in inspiring her work, and how she hates the word fusion when blending the musics of multiple cultures. An active performer of both jazz and classical music, Idit has played in various distinguished venues in the United States and abroad, such as The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and Lincoln Center in New York. Currently, Shner plays with her jazz quartet in Eugene and Portland, Oregon. Her latest release of jazz originals, 9 Short Stories, garnered a 4 star review in Downbeat Magazine. Her jazz debut, Tuesday's Blues, features nursery rhymes and ancient melodies from the Jewish liturgy performed in a jazz setting. Tuesday's Blues got great reviews from JazzTimes, All Music Guide, and Jazz Review. Jazz festival performances include the Diet Coke Woman in Jazz Festival (NY), Bellayre Festival (NY), and New-Trier Jazz Festival (IL). Idit appears on Music from SEAMUS Vol. 16, a compilation CD of music for instruments and electronic sounds by members of the Society for Electroacoustic Music in the United States. As a classical saxophonist Idit has commissioned and recorded new music and performed solo recitals in the US and Israel. MINERVA is her latest classical release. Her third CD, Le Merle Noir, featuring music by Messiaen, Bozza, Partos, and Glass, was released on Origin Classics in August 2013. Her previous classical recording, FISSURES: 20th Century Music for saxophone and Harp with renowned harpist Yumiko Schlaffer, received great acclaim and was played on NPR's All Things Considered. Idit has collaborated with Fireworks, Beta Collide and Third Angle (new music ensembles), and performed with the Oregon Symphony and the Eugene Symphony. Other appearances include the Northwest Percussion Festival, Electronic Music Midwest, the Oregon Bach Festival, and many North American Saxophone Alliance Conventions. During March 2006 she played in Israel as a featured soloist with a symphonic orchestra, and performed contemporary music at the national convention of the Society for Electro Acoustic Music in the US. Her last solo recital in Israel was broadcasted live on Voice of Music, a national public radio station. During 2005-2006 Idit played lead alto with Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra. Performing her own compositions in a jazz combo setting, she was selected to participate in Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead. Idit holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Oklahoma City University, a Masters degree in Music Education from University of Central Oklahoma, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of North Texas. Idit now teaches at the University of Oregon, as professor of saxophone and jazz studies. She was awarded two prestigious teaching awards: The 2015 Thomas F. JANELLE REICHMAN: IMPROVISING A SUCCESSFUL LIFE

Interesting Humans

Occasionally you get to meet someone who is both a master of their craft and admirably humble at the same time. Janelle Reichman, a world-class jazz musician, is such a person. Not only is Janelle an accomplished musician, she also runs a successful, growing business as a website designer, for among others, musicians. Janelle gives an education in Jazz and the life of a professional musician. She talks about her approach to jazz, her music training and the life of a professional jazz clarinetist and saxophonist. Janelle comes across as a keen practitioner, having performed at venues as famous at The Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall, as well as countless jazz clubs and honky tonks throughout the country, including Ann Arbor's own Blue Llama Jazz Club. Janelle has played with the likes of Wynton Marsalis and other accomplished and famous clarinetists and jazz musicians but seems to enjoy the most the regular groups she plays with. Janelle's regular groups include The Diva Jazz Orchestra, The Klezmephonic Trio and her own band, Janelle Reichman +4, the now defunct Red Hook Ramblers and Gotham Easy, the rebirth of the defunct Red Hook Ramblers. Her background includes some darker times for her when she was at graduate school at the Manhattan Conservatory of Music, where depression set in. She was saved by a couple fellow musicians and found they grounded her and provided a path through the rest of her time in school. She discusses the early days of her career living in a tiny studio apartment in Brooklyn where violent crime was rampant and how she balanced gigs at clubs with weddings and other appearances and writing music and figuring what was next. In fact, Janelle seems to thrive with several close connections with the musicians in the groups in which she plays. Janelle makes a point to compliment her fellow group members including Henrik Karapetyan whom she calls the "most virtuosic violinist I've ever played with" who "should be world famous." I have to say the way Janelle looks up to the musicians around her is a good measure of her character. She confesses to often being amazed at their abilities and it makes her work harder. We also talk about her improvisational skills and the dexterity and clarity it takes to be an improvisationalist. Not only is Janelle an accomplished musician, she also is building a successful web design endeavor she calls Ellanyze, which was an outgrowth of a yearning for greater fulfillment with her place in the world. Her business has grown to a full-time gig which she balances with her career in music. It turns out that this very talented woman is able to feed multiple creative funnels--one through making music and another through the visual of building websites. We wrap up with a funny analogy about how Janelle solves challenges talking about kitchen cabinets and her kitchen renovation. Hope you enjoy! Here's my conversation with Janelle.
