Motherhood in song: jazz musician & educator Brenda Earle Stokes

I was excited to speak with Brenda Earle Stokes, an award-winning jazz musician and innovative music educator based in NYC, and originally from Sarnia, Ontario. I too was raised in small town Ontario and taught piano for years, and I love learning from how other musicians, especially other women and mothers, have approached their career growth and creative pathways. I appreciated Brenda's perspectives on creating a thriving career through hard work and problem solving. Our conversation dove right into her her musical journey, from recording a spontaneous solo album Solo Sessions at the Sarnia Public Library (2019), to the inspiration and creative process behind her latest album Motherhood (2023). Brenda shared how she wrote the first song “The Endless Wait” years ago: “I was singing literally about the experience of pregnancy and that sort of feeling that you have where you're connected to your ancestors, but you're also like wondering who this person is.” It was during an artistic residency in 2019 that she had the space and focus to write eight of the ten songs for Motherhood. “In November of 2019, I was invited to do a residency at Banff. And it was really during that… in 8 or 9 days, I wrote eight of the songs.” Brenda discussed the challenges of being a mother in the male-dominated jazz industry, and how this new album captures the multidimensional realities of motherhood beyond the typical “look at my beautiful baby” songs. “Rather than sort of this one dimensional like, ‘oh, I'm so happy I my life is so full now'… it's more for those of us who are in it. It's more of a complex experience than that, where there's like body image issues or just like, who am I now?" Brenda is not only an award-winning performing and touring musician and songwriter, she's also an in-demand music educator with a growing YouTube following challenging the way things have been done traditionally in music education: “I've taken a radically different approach than the one that I was taught. I was taught the long way. And I don't recommend it.” Her experiences have led her to focus on efficiency for students learning to play piano and sing, creating a program that priorities helping aspiring musicians do what they want to do faster: play music. Brenda reflected on the immense effort required for an independent artist, from technical skills to marketing, which led her to learn how to shoot and edit video herself: “I have an incredible amount of technical knowledge that…. wasn't even on my radar at all. So that's why I think… you have to be willing to go in and really do the work for yourself and not think that someone can give you a blueprint for it because there is no blueprint for it.”   - - - Brenda Earle Stokes is an award-winning pianist, vocalist, composer and educator. Her performance career as a leader and side musician has taken her across the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. She has performed and recorded as a bandleader and side musician with Wycliffe Gordon, Maurice Hines and the Diva Jazz Orchestra. Her seven albums showcase her original compositions and an eclectic mix of standards, contemporary pop and obscure jazz compositions. A passionate educator, she has worked as a clinician, adjudicator and panelist all over the world and runs a bustling private studio in New York City. Brenda's popular online membership The Versatile Musician contains hundreds of online courses, video tutorials and printables and has empowered hundreds of musicians worldwide to feel more confident in their musical lives. We are joined with actor, director, producer & teacher & writer Marishka S. Phillips to have an awesome conversation on the craft of acting!Marishka S. Phillips was born into the entertainment business.  Her mother, Sandra Reaves-Phillips is an award-winning actress, in addition to being a writer and a singer.  Marishka grew up immersed in theater, film and television, so it was not surprising that she would follow in her mother's footsteps. Ms. Phillips had been honing her skills as a dancer, taking classes at Alvin Ailey School of Dance and Broadway Dance Center, and had begun performing at a very early age.   She got her first major theatrical break at age 13 when she was cast for the European tour of RAISIN. This opportunity offered her a chance to explore the world and served as an important confidence builder. Her career path has been anything but traditional, though it started off that way.  She landed on Broadway, cast as part of the ensemble, on the musical UPTOWN: IT'S HOT starring Maurice Hines, in which she also understudied for the female lead.  She continued amassing credits on Brodway with roles in BUBBLIN' BROWN SUGAR, FAME: THE MUSICAL, THE WIZ and THE ME NOBODY KNOWS.  On television, she had re-occurring roles in the last two seasons of THE COSBY SHOW spin-off – A DIFFERENT WORLD.  When she was not traveling the world with a musical or as a backup singer with recording artists like Sean “P Diddy” Combs and Cece Winans, she was developing and fortifying other aspects of her talents.  She never considered herself a one trick pony.  Like her mother before her, she began writing and eventually set her eye on directing, but not before fate would bring her together with the multi-faceted Susan Batson, who among her many other talents, was a world-renown acting coach who worked with some of Hollywood's A-list celebrities.  Though she did not abandon any of her other career goals, Ms. Batson did open up new possibilities which she embraced with the same passion that she has every chapter of her life's journey.  Today, in addition to being known as a working actor, Marishka is also a writer and director whose credits continue to grow.  Her short film, Melinda: The Movie starring Tony Award-winning performers, LaChanze and Lillias White won numerous awards on the short film circuit.  Ms. Phillips directed the one woman play, DOWN TO EARTHA, written and starringDierdra McDowell, which was a tribute to the invincible entertainer/civil rights and social justice activist, Eartha Kitt.Coaching other actors has become a central part of Ms. Phillips career development.  She has been an instrumental force in helping actors such as Kerry Washington (Scandal), Nicole Beharie (Miss Juneteenth) and Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill) achieve some of their best performances, and has received credit for doing that, as a result, she has become a much in demand acting coach. (visit her on YouTube)  The Marishka Method.  She currently coaches Nafessa Williams (I Wanna Dance With Somebody), Taja V. Simpson (The Oval) Shaquita Smith (Wicked City) and many more.  CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE YOUTUBE LIVESTREAM OF THIS EPISODE Follow US IG: https://www.instagram.com/highlymelanatedpodcast Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/H_MelanatedPod YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb2VbyoW6KaMxQo5onYluXAIF YOU WANT TO BE A GUEST OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO WOULD BE A GREAT CHOICE, HIT US UP!!!FEEL FREE TO EMAIL US @highlymelanatedpodcast@gmail.com

"So here we are again", "talkin' in tongues" and proving "one man is not enough" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss ALL THREE musicals based on the literary work of Truman Capote on episode fifteen of My Favorite Flop: 1954's House of Flowers, 1966's Breakfast at Tiffany's, AND 1971's The Grass Harp.   ABOUT HOUSE OF FLOWERS Based on the original short story by Truman Capote, House of Flowers tells the story of two neighboring bordellos that battle for business in an idealized Haitian setting. The musical features music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by Arlen and Truman Capote, and a book by Capote. In the early 1950s, Truman Capote became involved in the performing arts. He was approached by producer Saint Subber to adapt his recent story, "House of Flowers", as a musical play for Broadway. Much of the writing was done in the Italian fishing village of Portofino; but Capote and Jack Dunphy found time to travel to Switzerland and Paris before turning to America, where Capote met again with producer Saint Subber and continued his work in the musical. After a Philadelphia try-out, the show opened on Broadway on December 30, 1954 at the Alvin Theatre and played for 165 performances. The director was Peter Brook. The cast included Pearl Bailey, Diahann Carroll, Juanita Hall, Ray Walston, Carmen de Lavallade, Alvin Ailey and Geoffrey Holder (who also provided a section of choreography). Although the show received generally poor reviews, the dance-rhythm infused score has been praised for its mix of blues and calypso. There was an unsuccessful Off-Broadway revival in 1968 at Theater de Lys. In 2003, there was an Encores! production, starring Tonya Pinkins and Armelia McQueen as the battling bordello madams and Maurice Hines as Captain Jonas, the smuggler. The virginal Ottilie was played by Nikki M. James, and the mountain boy, Royal, was played by Brandon Victor Dixon. Roscoe Lee Browne played the voodoo priest, Houngan.   ABOUT BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S Based both on the 1958 Truman Capote novella and 1961 film of the same name, Breakfast at Tiffany's tells the story of a free spirit named Holly Golightly. The musical features music and lyrics by Bob Merrill and a book by Abe Burrows, which was rewritten in previews by legendary playwright Edward Albee. The original cast included Mary Tyler Moore, Richard Chamberlain, Sally Kellerman, Larry Kert and Priscilla Lopez. The production was designed by Oliver Smith, directed by Joseph Anthony and choreographed by Michael Kidd with assistance from Tony Mordente, and produced by David Merrick. Despite the impressive list of collaborators, the project never gelled. The show underwent constant and massive changes in its script and score during out-of-town tryouts. The original book by Abe Burrows was seen in Philadelphia, then scrapped completely, and Edward Albee, an unlikely choice, was hired to re-write before a Boston tryout. Burrows was the original director but left when Albee was brought in. He was replaced by Joseph Anthony. On a daily basis, the cast was given new material hours before curtain time, and the piece was overly long, running nearly four hours. Burrows's departure resulted in low morale among cast members, and Moore was convinced that Merrick planned to fire her soon after opening night. Its original title, Holly Golightly, was changed when it started previews on December 12, 1966, on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre. Despite a healthy advance sale and much audience anticipation, it closed four nights later without having officially opened. Merrick placed an infamous ad in The New York Times, announcing that he shut down the production "rather than subject the drama critics and the public to an excruciatingly boring evening." In 2013, the musical was revived for the first time, using Burrows's book, under the title Holly Golightly, at the 200-seat Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, as part of Ian Marshall Fisher's "Lost Musicals" staged concert series. One reviewer wrote: "the show never seems to come alive [and though] worth excavating out of interest in the form, it is not clear whether it is stageworthy."   ABOUT THE GRASS HARP Based on the 1951 novella by Truman Capote, The Grass Harp tells the story of an orphaned boy and two elderly ladies who observe life from a tree. They eventually leave their temporary retreat to make amends with each other and other members of society. The musical features music by Claibe Richardson and book and lyrics by Kenward Elmslie. The initial 1967 tryout of the musical was performed by Trinity Square Repertory Company at the Rhode Island School of Design auditorium, in Providence, Rhode Island. Directed and staged by Adrian Hall, the cast included Barbara Baxley as Dolly Heart Talbo, Carol Brice as the black maid Catherine Creek, Carol Bruce as Verena Talbo, Elaine Stritch as the evangelist Baby Love. After the Providence tryout, Larry Fineberg optioned the property for Broadway, casting Mama Cass as the evangelist Miss Baby Love. However, Fineberg was unable to raise capital funds, and the producing rights were optioned by Richard Barr. In October 1971, the Michigan University Professional Theatre Program presented The Grass Harp with the university's music and drama departments supplying musicians and performers. Initially as an evaluation by the Broadway producers Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Michael Harvey, and Associate Producer Michael Kasden. Celeste Holm, a close friend of Claibe Richardson, appeared in the Michigan University Professional Program's production as "Miss Baby Love". She was replaced with Karen Morrow for the Broadway production. The musical adaptation opened on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theatre on November 2, 1971 and closed on November 6, 1971. The cast featured Barbara Cook as Dolly Talbo, Carol Brice as Catherine Creek, Karen Morrow as evangelist Miss Baby Love, Ruth Ford as Verena Talbo, Russ Thacker as Colin Talbo, Max Showalter as Dr. Morris Ritz, John Baragrey as Judge Cool, Kelley Boa, Trudy Bordoff, Colin Duffy, Eva Grant, and David Craig Moskin as Miss Baby Love's orphans, known as the "Heavenly Pride and Joy", Christine Stabile as Maude Riordan, and Harvey Vernon as Sheriff Amos Legrand. The musical previewed and opened during a major New York City newspaper strike preventing advertising and reviews, with no advance theater party ticket sales guarantee. Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Michael Harvey, and Michael Kasden gave the company the option of maintaining three more weeks for the productions' performance schedule, or closing after only seven performances, using the show's banked funds to produce a Broadway cast album. The musical orchestration was recorded in Cologne, Germany, with the Cologne Symphonic Orchestra ensemble. Returning to the States, the original cast was recorded in New York City, with the album released a year after the musical's closing date.

Forget triple-threat, anyone can do that, Leo Manzari is some kind of multi-threat. Tap dancer. Rapper. Singer. Actor. And who knows what else he has up his sleeve. Since he was two-years- old and started dance lessons, the D.C.-native has carved out a fantastic path filled with highlights that include performing (alongside his brother, John) under the tutelage of mentor Maurice Hines in the Lincoln Theater D.C. production of Sophisticated Ladies, an acting stint on Homeland and the featured tap dancer in Hozier’s new music video, “Almost (Sweet Music)”. Based in Brooklyn, last year Leo released his debut album, Clockwork, and has been seasoning 2019 with a series of singles. When Leo becomes a household-name, the only obvious response will be “of course!” [This episode features “On Your Mind” from Clockwork in its entirety.] Visit Leo Manzari online:                                  https://leomanzari.com                                   https://www.instagram.com/leomanzari STREAM/SUBSCRIBE ON SPOTIFY:                           http://bit.ly/TMTspotify SUBSCRIBE ON SOUNDCLOUD:                 https://soundcloud.com/thisisboice TMT APP FOR iPHONE: http://bit.ly/TMTappiOS TMT APP FOR ANDROID: http://bit.ly/TMTappANDROID SUBSCRIBE ON iTUNES: http://bit.ly/TalkMusicTalk SUBSCRIBE ON GOOGLE PLAY: http://bit.ly/TMTgoogleplay Please take a moment to leave a rating and/or review in the store. Ed Palermo's Big Band performed a show featuring Todd Rundgren music this year at the Iridium in NYC.   It's not the first time the band has performed Todd's music, they have also performed a mashup of Todd and Zappa billed as Zodd Zundgren several times at the Iridium.  Ed is not a “business as usual” musician. After all, when most people think of “big bands” they think of Duke and Dorsey. But go to see Ed Palermo’s Big Band and you might hear Zappa, Rundgren, Hendrix, the blues of Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield or one of Ed’s own compositions, loaded with lush turns and unexpected twists. Before forming his own band, Ed toured and recorded with many different artists including Aretha Franklin, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Lou Rawls, Melba Moore, Debbie Gibson, The Spinners and countless others. He has written and arranged for the Tonight Show, Maurice Hines and Eddy Fischer. He also arranged the music for a recent James Brown concert at the Hollywood Bowl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAYvoMNrOac
