In this episode of General Witchfinders, we take a close look at The Creeping Flesh (1973), a British horror film from cult studio Tigon British Film Productions. Best known for low-budget horror that ran alongside the likes of Hammer Horror and Amicus, Tigon was founded in 1966 by Tony Tenser and operated out of Hammer House on Wardour Street in London. This marks our first dive into their back catalogue—and what a place to start. The Creeping Flesh stars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee (#BigChrisLee) as brothers on opposing ends of a bizarre scientific discovery involving an ancient skeleton, reanimation, and some very shaky ideas about inherited evil. Lorna Heilbron plays opposite them as the increasingly disturbed Penelope. The film was directed by Freddie Francis, a key figure in British horror cinema. Francis replaced Don Sharp at the last minute and brought his usual visual flair, having previously directed Paranoiac, The Evil of Frankenstein, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, and Tales from the Crypt. He's also better known in wider circles for his cinematography—earning two Academy Awards and five BAFTAs for work on Sons and Lovers, The Elephant Man, The Innocents, Return to Oz, and Glory. He also worked on Dune, Cape Fear, and even music videos for All Saints and Jimmy Nail. Cinematographer Norman Warwick handled the visuals on The Creeping Flesh. Warwick was also behind the camera for The Abominable Dr. Phibes (see Episode 10), Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde, and Confessions of a Window Cleaner. The film was shot at Shepperton Studios and Thorpe House in Surrey. We believe The Creeping Flesh was the 20th film pairing Cushing and Lee, likely falling between Horror Express (Episode 7) and Nothing but the Night (Episode 42). In our third Halloween-themed episode this month, Varun (playing podcast host) and Dhruv discuss a sub-genre of British horror films best characterized as a cross between classy and exploitation horror. (Think, as Varun says, "somewhere between the B-movie camp classics made by the Ramsay Brothers and Edgar Wright's "Last Night in Soho"). Treating this episode as our introduction to this sub-genre of films produced under the Hammer Production banner (which gives it the name - Hammer Horror!), we first talk about the origin of their horror films in the 50s. Then, we specifically talk about two films (out of a gazillion) that they made in their glory days of the late 50s and 60s. The first, actually very good one is Terence Fischer's adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, titled "Horror of Dracula" in the U.S; the second is Don Sharp's rudderless "Rasputin - The Mad Monk," which both Varun and Dhruv call one of the most "boring" horror films you could make on a character whose life is so full of incident and excitement. Listen to the full episode to hear us talk about why one of them works while the other doesn't and what exactly is the appeal (and limitation) of Hammer Horror films today!      This week we kick off October and Horror Season with something old from a legendary studio and something new from a go-to service for fright fiends.     Gerald and Marianne honeymooning through Bavaria in 1910 run out of gas and learn they are miles off course and days away from any fuel delivery. Taking refuge at the local inn, they catch the eye of Dr. Ravna and his children who invite them to a ball at their home. Separated during the festivities Gerald soon discovers that under all the frivolity lies a vampiric cult. Can Gerald save his bride? Will anyone lend him aid besides the drunk professor? Could Marianne really prefer the life of a bloodsucker? Don Sharp's first film for Hammer, Kiss of the Vampire.     Alone one night, while renovating her new home, Dani is brutally murdered. A former patient of her psychiatrist husband, Ted, is quickly convicted of the crime and sent back into Ted's care. Justice being quickly served, Ted begins his life anew and takes up with Yana, a pharmaceutical rep. Just when Ted thinks he can move on with his life, his deceased wife's blind twin sister shows up at his door with an unusual gift. Was the right person convicted? Will Ted ever find peace to leave his tragedy in the past? Could the mysterious gift be the key to supernatural justice? We make this podcast in a cave, so it should come as no surprise that our movies this time involve journeys deep under the surface of the earth. We start off with "Grim" from 1996, a tiny little movie from director Paul Matthews with an impressive monster suit and a story that almost instantly fell out of our brains after watching it. It is set in a small town with an elaborate set of caves running beneath it which are inhabited by a demon that is wreaking havoc across town. We follow that up with a real gem, 1984's "What Waits Below" from director Don Sharp and starring the wonderful Robert Powell. This is great pulpy adventure about a cave-expert that is tasked to help the army install a top secret device in a cavern that just might be inhabited by mysterious creatures! It was a real surprise and we all loved it! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. On today's episode we delve into the classic British film The Thirty Nine Steps The Thirty Nine Steps is a British 1978 thriller film directed by Don Sharp, with screenplay by British playwright Michael Robson, based on the novel The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan. It was the third film version of the 1915 novel. This version of Buchan's tale starred Robert Powell as Richard Hannay, Karen Dotrice as Alex, John Mills as Colonel Scudder, and a host of other well-known British actors in smaller parts. It is generally regarded as the closest to the novel, being set before the Great War. The early events and overall feel of the film bear much resemblance to Buchan's original story, albeit with a few changes such as the re-casting of Scudder as a more immediately sympathetic character and the introduction of a love interest. It also introduces a different meaning for the "thirty-nine steps", although unlike its filmed predecessors it returns to Buchan's original notion of being an actual staircase. It is known for the Big Ben sequence near the end, inspired by the film My Learned Friend (1943), starring Will Hay, although this is its most fundamental deviation from Buchan's original story, which reaches its culmination in a coastal location in Kent. Powell later reprised the role in the ITV series Hannay which ran for 13 episodes from 1988 to 1989. On this episode, Andrew Graves, Rich Johnson and Gabriele Zuccarini don ludicrous helmets and struggle into tight leather trousers in order to try and make sense of Don Sharp’s deeply confusing and frankly barmy, horror biker movie, Psychomania. Together they undertake a strange 70s road trip incorporating supermarkets, badly drawn stone circles, Beryl Reid and frogs. Expect desperately out of touch representations of youth culture, ridiculous suicide attempts and some seriously un-hip Hells Angels, in this archetypal low budget cult classic. So, get on the back of our anti-hero’s bike and hang on cos this journey’s about to get very messy. As unlikely gang member Chopped Meat once sang ‘to ride was more than living, the taking more than giving’ whatever the fuck that means.

Roaring back from the grave, comes Psychomania! Mr Jim provides a commentary track for the cult Brit horror flick, directed by Hammer veteran Don Sharp, and starring George Sander, Nicky Henson and Beryl Reid. This movie tells the tale of a gang of motorcycling hoodlums who return to life to wreak havoc thanks to a pact with a toad! It's the only biker-zombie-magic-toad movie you need to see!

The film was directed by Don Sharp […]
