We always like to see diversity in level design, right? Whether it's the a beautiful seaside area like Gondolia in DQXI or the dreaded Chemical Plant Zone in Sonic 2, Water Levels can be very divisive. Square Enix's 35th Anniversary Dragon Quest Celebration did not disappoint!! We saw the first tease of the logo for Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. I'll tell you what little we know so far. Also revealed were two new games: Dragon Quest Treasures and an HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III. Treasures follows the story of a young Erik and Mia from DQXI while the remake of III is done in the Octopath Traveler style and looks amazing. So much DQ excitement coming in the near future. We also had two new characters shown for The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki as well as everyone's crafts. It's coming to PS4 in Japan on September 30, 2021. This week on Dragon Quest FM we're celebrating Sylvando! He is everyone's favorite character (well, maybe not everyone, but he ranked #1 in the poll from Famitsu), and he has some of the most personality of any JRPG character we've ever seen. Or maybe even any video game character, if we're being honest. Austin says that Sylvando is his favorite video game character ever. Ever. Possibly (probably?) even surpassing Vivi from Final Fantasy IX. Which is absurd because he is insanely in love with FFIX. That's high praise. We discuss the various outfits that Sylvando has during the game, from the fabulous peacock tail and its variants, his gadabout jester digs, and the dapper doublet that wound up making its way into Beej's heart early on and never letting go. Regarding gameplay, we talk about how we used him in our party pretty much all the time, either as a spot healer because of Hustle Dance or the fantastic support abilities that he provides for both offense and defense. Overall, he's just a strong character that can do roughly anything he puts his mind to, darling. And we can't not talk about the acting. The voice actor for Sylvando has very few credits to his name, but we hope to see him in more after the fantastic job he did in DQXI. This is the stuff of awards, we think, but he didn't win any. We are, however, going to follow him into any other games, much like we do Troy Baker of The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite fame. Also, Beej disappoints Austin terribly as a human being and becomes a little less in his eyes. But you want to find out what he did to get hit with such judgment? You're going to have to listen to find out, darlings. Support DQFM on Patreon at patreon.com/dragonquestfm Dragon Quest XI has experienced incredible success in the West, and there is good cause for that. It takes the DQ formula that has worked for over 33 years and hones it into what many people say might be the best in the series. Unlike previous Dragon Quest games, though, DQXI has released on multiple platforms at launch, instead of getting remasters and remakes over the years. In Japan, a PS4 and Nintendo 3DS version were released (sans voice acting). and in North America and the rest of the world, a PS4 and PC version were released (with voice acting). In 2019, a Nintendo Switch version is coming out to combine the various editions and their unique qualities across the regions into a Definitive Edition. Beej and Austin have, between them, played each and every version currently available. Well, scratch that: they haven't played the Japanese PS4 version. But other than that. So in this episode, they talk about what it was like to experience the game on the various consoles, why each console felt unique, what they were missing, and just why we don't have more Sylvando already, darling. The true heart of the episode, however, is when they discuss curling up on the couch with a brand new Liquid Metal Slime 2DS, translating DQXI from Japanese using the Google Translate's real-time tool, and giggled and oohed and ahhed like they were 12 year old boys again. Because Dragon Quest has that effect on all of us, we think. And DQXI might have it even more than that. What About You? And we know you have opinions on this, too! So send us a voice message at https://anchor.fm/dragonquest/message and tell us your thoughts on DQXI , and maybe you'll get featured in an upcoming episode! Thanks for listening! Support DQFM on Patreon at patreon.com/dragonquestfm Dragon Quest is 33-years-old. Some of you have been there since the very beginning. BJ, for instance, played the Nintendo Power Giveaway version of Dragon Warrior all the way back in 1989. And others like Austin became mega-fans after being exposed in 2016 or so. No matter when you come to DQ, what matters is what you're here. Or almost here. We get asked a lot about which Dragon Quest game you should start with? Should you start with DQXI because it's the newest one? What about DQVIII because it's one of the most well-known and well-beloved? Or should you, like many suggest, start all the way back at the beginning and play Dragon Quest I-III before moving into the more modern games. While there's no right or wrong answer to that, we take the time to sit down and talk about how we came to the series, what made us love it so much, and what titles we think are good places to start in the series. More important than that, we talk about why you should start there. Because we can see merit in a lot of different places for a lot of different reasons. We love the series, and we don't think there is any bad place to dig in. But we do think there are better choices for some people over others. If someone has never played a JRPG before, but has a lot of experience with modern consoles...they might not be the right fit for DQ1 right off the bat. But if someone has a hard time going backward from games that have improved systems, maybe they should start with 1. Or even VIII since XI improves so much on it. Regardless of where you fall about where to start playing DQ, I think we can all agree on one thing: people should play Dragon Quest. No matter where you start, we think you'll fall in love. Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: Beej is solo this week. Not for a lack of trying. Void's life got twist turned upside down, and the schedule for us to get back on schedule was pushed back. Then Beej's internet decided that it didn't want to stay connected for more than a few minutes at a time, making recording an episode with a guest impossible. Stupid thunderstorms making the power blink. Regardless, we've got an episode in your feed covering the talk of the geeks: last week's Nintendo Direct. Oodles of Cool Stuff from Nintendo The Nintendo Direct on February 13th was chock-full of content that shows 2019 as being potentially the best year yet for Nintendo's portable console. Between Yoshi's Crafted World (whose demo is amazeballs), Fire Emblem Three Houses (which looks to change up the formula the series has stuck with to this point), and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (it's so pretty!)...the Switch has a lot going for it. Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker is getting some DLC, which is neat. Because it's a Wii U game that was ported to the Switch. The interesting part is that the Wii U version isn't getting the DLC. So folks with that version miss out. It's an odd move for Nintendo, considering with games like Breath of the Wild, the DLC was the same for both platforms. Mario Maker 2 is coming out. Beej wants a Yoshi's Island palette. That's it and that's all. And that's not to mention that Nintendo didn't even mention the upcoming Pokemon Generation 8 game that's due at the end of this year. Oh, and we get Joker from Persona 5 in Super Smash Bros Ultimate for sure. That indicates we may be getting P5 Crimson on Switch sometime since he's not been on a Nintendo platform before -- except that he has. Persona 5 is the primary cast of the new 3DS title Persona Q2, and it's been out in Japan since December and is coming Stateside in June (or July?). So there's a small chance they're using that as an in, but who knows? Regardless, Joker in Smash is gonna be awesome. Third-Party Shenanigans SquareEnix brought their game: Final Fantasy VII is on its way, Final Fantasy IX dropped in HD on the eshop the day of the Direct, and Dragon Quest XI S got a spectacular presentation. SE showed that the much-anticipated 2d version of the game (previously only available on the Japanese 3DS version) is coming to Switch. This mode is reminiscent of the SNES DQ games, and Beej can't wait. He loves old-school RPGs. But you already know that. Dragon Quest Builders 2 is also on the docket, and even though it's a builder game, and Beej doesn't really do those, this one looks really neat and the co-op mode means that he might just like it because he can play with Dragon Quest Austin. And...AND...there's a new Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon game. Beej has no idea if it's a remake or a new one, but it looks cool and cute. So he's on board. Basically SE showed up. The problem is that the Square side of SquareEnix has been disappointing lately, so we'll see how things go from here. But the Enix stuff looks fantastic. So at least there's that. Nindie Delights Nintendo highlighted a lot of other games, too, that aren't just their spectacular first-party titles. We saw Deltarune, the follow-up to Undertale. We got a glimpse of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and the badassery that is Captain Marvel and her binary form. Rune Factory 4 got a special edition, Rune Factory 5 got announced, and the buzz of excitement around both has Beej intrigued enough to give the games a shot. He has no idea if he'll like them, but everyone else does. So he can't wait. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is coming out finally, and Beej couldn't be more excited. He missed the Kickstarter, but the full game is finally on its way, and he...is...stoked. It's gonna be awesome if last year's retro-inspired entry to the series was an indication. And then there's Astral Chain. It may be the highlight of the show behind Link's Awakening because it was just such a surprise. We had no idea it was coming (or at least Beej didn't), and the cyberpunk setting and the frenetic action and what looks like it could possibly be RPG gameplay...my oh my. We can't wait. That's the collective we. As in the internet. It's gonna be great. Or at least, it better be. So what's your take on the February Nintendo Direct? See anything that really piques your interest and makes you want to empty your wallet into the eshop? Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: Void is busy with life stuff, so Beej brings in Austin -- who you've probably heard about before. He is going to be blogging on the Geek to Geek site about playing through all of the Dragon Quest games this year, so we thought it would be a great time to bring him on the show to talk about the series. After discovering a love for DQ with the Dragon Quest Heroes games, DQXI grabbed both Austin and Beej and reeled them in hard. Without any previous mainline game experience, Austin decided to get the PS4 platinum trophy. By then he was hooked and was jonesing for as much DQ as he could get. Dragon Quest XI - What's So Good About It We discuss at great length at why Dragon Quest XI stands out from so many other JRPGs, and why the game itself just works. Right now, it's a very traditional DQ game, but is honestly one of the most accessible RPGs out right now. There is true turn-based combat, a fantastic character named Sylvando you're going to love, and a lot of the jRPG classic gameplay but looks completely new and beautiful. Some folks complain about the music. But...it wasn't a problem for either of us. It was DQ music. Other Dragon Quest Games Austin is currently playing Dragon Quest VII, which is different from the other games he's played. Right now, the game is very slow (16ish hours in), the characters are kinda obnoxious, but you can tell that it had a lot working against it back in the day when it was released on PS1. The 3DS version is definitely an improvement. DQ 1-3 on iOS are fantastic. And relatively quick to get through. They're known as the Erdrick Trilogy, and when you look at them versus Final Fantasy 1-3, you can actually tell how much more advanced the DQ games are than FF. It's around FFIV that the FF games really take off on their own and make their own way. Beej on Dragon Quest DQVIII was my first one. Saw @13th_story on Twitter post a picture, a single picture, from the 3DS version, and I went out and bought it. It just looked fun, and it was pretty, and I knew I had to play it. It took me a while to get into it, and I almost quit. I am very glad I didn't. Took me a while to get into it. Almost quit. Glad I didn’t. The game is super traditional but in the best way. DQ8 is absolutely a predecessor to DQXI, which is why XI is the better place to start now. It's the most improved of all the DQ games, has the most polish, and it doesn't ruin anything when you go back to the older ones. Beej imported DQIX from Japan to practice the language. The DS version is the only version that exists. It didn't do so great in America. We both hope that XI's success will make them re-release a lot of these like IX with remasters. It's the 7th full episode of Clod of War! The podcast for that subset of the human population who love video games AND who are arthritic buffoons. This episode is definitely not safe for work. We talk about Nintendo Online and have a rare ten minutes of heated exchange where Dan is clearly wrong. But we also have a lovely time before and after that talking about TGS, DQXI, silly season and much more. If you're listening on the Anchor FM app then don't forget you can send us some lovely applause and even better, voice messages. If they''re interesting or entertaining enough, we might even include them in the next episode! Our excellent theme tune, "Pixel Party" Music is by Eric Matyas, www.soundimage.org

It's been a good year for me (re: games), and things are only getting better. Example A: I'm knee deep in Persona 5, which of course came out last year but allow me this indulgence, would you? Example B: Ni No Kuni II was released last week to positive acclaim, which means I have a meaty RPG to look forward to courtesy Level 5. Example C: Square Enix popped out of no where this week to let us know Dragon Quest XI is coming west this September. I am excited. Glad we got that out of the way because I'm certain my two Pod Fathers do not want to hear me drone on and on about Japanese role playing games. If you can make it past my JRPG gushing, we have a nice show in store for you. After going over the latest headlines in gaming, the boys (sans Buffa) explore their experience in getting spooked by games that don't explicitly have that “horror” label. We wrap things up with a special edition of the Beatdown before saying farewell. All this and more on today's show!
