BY THE GRACE OF THE TRUE GURU: If only I could meet the True Guru, the Primal Being. Discarding my faults and sins, I would chant the Lord's Glorious Praises. I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. Continuously, continually, I chant the Word of the Guru's Bani. Gurbani always seems so sweet; I have eradicated the sinful residues from within. The disease of egotism is gone, fear has left, and I am absorbed in celestial peace. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the bed of my body has become cozy and beautiful, and I enjoy the essence of spiritual wisdom. Night and day, I continually enjoy peace and pleasure. O Nanak, this is my pre-ordained destiny. || 1 || The soul-bride is lovingly embellished with truth and contentment; her Father, the Guru, has come to engage her in marriage to her Husband Lord. Joining with the humble Saints, I sing Gurbani. Singing the Guru's Bani, I have obtained the supreme status; meeting with the Saints, the self-elect, I am blessed and adorned. Anger and attachment have left my body and run away; I have eradicated hypocrisy and doubt. The pain of egotism is gone, and I have found peace; my body has become healthy and free of disease. By Guru's Grace, O Nanak, I have realized God, the ocean of virtue. || 2 || The self-willed manmukh is separated, far away from God; she does not obtain the Mansion of His Presence, and she burns. Egotism and falsehood are deep within her; deluded by falsehood, she deals only in falsehood. Practicing fraud and falsehood, she suffers terrible pain; without the True Guru, she does not find the way. The foolish soul-bride wanders along dismal pathways; each and every moment, she is bumped and pushed. God, the Great Giver, shows His Mercy, and leads her to meet the True Guru, the Primal Being. Those beings who have been separated for countless incarnations, O Nanak, are reunited with the Lord, with intuitive ease. || 3 || Calculating the most auspicious moment, the Lord comes into the bride's home; her heart is filled with ecstasy. The Pandits and astrologers have come, to sit and consult the almanacs. They have consulted the almanacs, and the bride's mind vibrates with bliss, when she hears that her Friend is coming into the home of her heart. The virtuous and wise men sat down and decided to perform the marriage immediately. She has found her Husband, the Inaccessible, Unfathomable Primal Lord, who is forever young; He is her Best Friend from her earliest childhood. O Nanak, he has mercifully united the bride with Himself. She shall never be separated again. || 4 || 1 || --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gsjhampur/support
In this interview I am once again joined by John Maki Evans, teacher of Japanese swordsmanship and several esoteric spiritual disciplines, and author of ‘Kurikara: The Sword and the Serpent'. John discusses his time at Oxford University, his depression as a student, and why it took him years in a monastery and extensive training in Japan to undo the effects of academic study on his mind. John shares his insights into ‘The Subtle Art of a Cat', a little known, centuries old Japanese text with a potent message about spiritual cultivation, true art, and complete spontaneity. John tells the story of the text and explores its hidden meanings, including how to maintain awareness during dynamic action, access freedom and flow, and move beyond self consciousness. John also reflects on his powerful near-death experience, the art of teaching, and how to harmonise the primal forces of Thanatos and Eros, death and desire. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep246-subtle-art-of-a-cat-john-maki-evans-2 Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:09 - Getting into Oxford University 04:30 - John's experiences at Oxford University 07:57 - Struggles with depression 09:12 - Bad effect of Oxford on John's mind 10:25 - Stultification and John's personality 11:04 - Time at the monastery and releasing inner stuckness 13:26 - Time in Japan and developing a different personality 17:28 - How John learned Japanese 18:43 - Study arc for reading Japanese classics 21:19 - Gaining practice value from texts 23:37 - Accessing the real thing 27:22 - The Subtle Art of a Cat 33:17 - The polarising ego 35:14 - Spontaneity and beyond self consciousness 37:09 - Neti neti 39:12 - Spontaneous action and the spiritual side of martial arts 41:35 - Freedom and flow 43:09 - Maintaining awareness and complete spontaneity 45:47 - John's life changing near-death experience 54:20 - Hara power, the unconscious, and the survival instinct 58:16 - True martial cultivation 01:00:06 - Common mistakes and hurting oneself 01:04:11 - Complete body-mind participation 01:05:43 - Evaluating quality of movement and being 01:07:46 - Duende and art 01:09:18 - England and the old white male 01:10:24 - Learning to be with Thanatos and Eros 01:12:39 - The Gate of Killing and Death 01:15:39 - Harmonising intuition and manipulation 01:16:16 - Egotism in the martial arts 01:18:00 - Becoming exposed and the art of teaching 01:21:39 - Letting go of feeling good … Previous episode with John Maki Evans: - https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep231-esoteric-arts-of-japan-john-maki-evans To find out more about John Maki Evans, visit: - https://www.battodo-fudokan.co.uk/ Read ‘The Subtle Art of a Cat' - https://terebess.hu/zen/neko.pdf … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

The 16th chapter is an analytic study on the basic elements of human personality. Its purpose is to help people understand fundamental values that have enriched human civilization. It reminds us that we should not forget those values in our pursuit of wealth, power and comfort.11th verse: “There is continuous thought in the mind – no control, no restraint – with a desire to acquire something. Gratification of objects of enjoyment is the dominant theme of such people's existence.”Mind always wants to possess something, not necessarily because we need it. Desires are not always linked to need.12th verse: “Driven by aspirations and desires, they go on to secure those objects of enjoyment by whatever means.”13th verse: “Today, I have got so much wealth and prestige. That is not enough. I have many other desires. I must continue my effort to go after these desires. These objects of enjoyment are mine and will remain mine in the future.”The 13th verse is interpreted in light of the 4th verse, which list six undesirable characteristics of those endowed with Asuri Sampat: Hypocrisy, arrogance, self-conceit, anger, rudeness, and ignorance. The 14th verse should be understood in the context of when Gita was written when warfare was common. It says: “I have killed this enemy. I am the master. I am going to enjoy. I am successful, powerful and happy.”While the 14th verse is written from the perspective of warfare, it applies to modern times where people compete with each other from the standpoint of the companies they work for.15th verse: “I am coming from a high position. There is no one as great as me. I shall perform big rituals. I shall enjoy and I shall acquire great things.”Shankaracharya, in his commentary on the 15th verse, says that such people are in self-delusion. They find out they are deluded when they get a blow from nature such as losing their job or money. The continuous thought current of acquiring material comforts imprisons them. The ancient text Bhagavata Purana (12th skandha, 2nd chapter, 2nd verse onwards) projects what life would be like in the future in Kaliyuga. It says: “Money will be the single most decisive factor in judging the value of people. With what values one lives his life, will be immaterial. Might will be right. Justice and social order will be built on the foundation of wealth. Some people will be enormously rich. Others will suffer from starvation. There will be epidemics spreading all over the world.”The 16th chapter is only concerned about the nature of human beings, not society as a whole. It warns us that if we forget the fundamental human values, society will collapse.16th verse: “They fall into the hellish life of constantly thinking of material comforts. Their mind becomes sick.”We can never achieve everything that we want to achieve. There is no end to desires. All these desires create a cloud of confusion and self-deception. The unfulfilled desires make the mind sick with anxiety and worries. We cannot meet all desires and everything in this world - such as health, money, status - is essentially impermanent. We may intellectually know this, but that intellectual knowledge has not become our emotional state, our common sense. The purpose of the 16rth chapter is to translate this intellectual knowledge into spiritual common sense.17th verse: “Extremely conceited, haughty, filled with pride and intoxication of wealth, they perform all sacrifices with great ostentation disregarding all ordinances.” This is the literal translation. The meaning of the verse is that such people do things in an improper manner without any consideration for propriety. For example, when we read a scripture, we should read it with shraddha, contemplate on it and imbibe what we read. Instead, in modern times, if we just click our way through different kinds of content, it would be considered improper.18th verse: “Filled with egotism, power, insolence, lust and anger, such people hate Me. They do not recognize the presence of the divine spark in themselves and in others.”Egotism is an important trait when directed towards creative channels. Sri Ramakrishna used to say that the ego should be given a good job to do. The ego should be our servant, not vice versa. The three gunas operate at the level of the antahkarana, which has four compartments: mind, intellect, memory system and ego. The difference between beings is not at the physical level; rather, it is at the level of antahkarana.Consciousness is one. Antahkarana is different among beings and it reflects consciousness differently. Swami Vivekananda said that the difference between an amoeba and a Buddha is only of degrees, not of kind. Buddha is like the clean mirror, in whom the presence of the lord manifests in His full effulgence.
Kleshas are fear based, mental-emotional afflictions that cause persistent distress, pain and suffering. The first Klesha is Avidya, which is our blind spots, our lack of awareness or misapprehension in what we are seeing. Asmita is the second Klesha meaning egotism, the “I – AM – Ness” of the ego falsely identifying by its distorted sense of self seen through Avidya. It is said that the ego is at the centre of your personality. Without the sense of self, life would be unliveable. We need a healthy ego to live and function. It gives us perspective on experiences and coordinates many daily functions. “I” need to eat, sleep, work, etc. Ego mediates between the consciousness and unconsciousness relearning the internal and external worlds, and the personal and social relationships. The mental aspect of the ego, according to the Yoga Sutras is called the Ahamkara “I-maker.” I am Zephyr, I am a mother, I am a wife, I am a Yoga Teacher. I am the main character in my story. Now how I write the story depends on my core belief of myself. I am my name, I am the worst or best mother, wife, yoga teacher. Thinking more or less of who I think I am and misidentifying by my label. Asmita makes us think we are the limited self, reducing us to our bodies, life experiences, thoughts and emotions. We are what we look like, what we can or can't do, what we like or don't like. By our labels such as our name, status, reputation, occupation, accomplishments and failures. That is who we are. This breeds separateness of “myself and OTHERS” and “compare and despair” that grows seeds of self-doubt, insecurity, defensiveness, hypersensitivity, arrogance and intolerance. Reinforcing fear based core beliefs that we are NOT ENOUGH as we are, loveable, smart, capable, successful, flexible, strong, worthy, valuable…enough. Pulling one into a downward shame, guilt and fear spiral. This distorted unhealthy self then craves attention! It is its nectar. It places itself at the centre of the Universe, the main character in its own story and it loves attention, to win, to have fame and power anything to validate its self-importance. The unhealthy ego displaying behaviour that is ego-centric, self-centred, narcissistic in arrogance, pride, superiority and narrow view point to continue reinforcing the story of ME, MINE and I. A healthy ego feels content, not threatened by change, secure in fundamental needs being met, is open, curious, able to listen, to be considerate, compassionate and kind. The ego is very powerful and recognising what is motivating the ego is key to practice. To read more and to practice with Zephyr Wildman, click here. To support Zephyr Yoga Podcast, donate here. Firesidechat.com/daniellapark As 2022 comes to a close, it appears a new breed of health-conscious sub-species has reared its head for all to see. Egotism and vanity have been attributed to the practice of fitness and physical health, but it has been retorted as unnecessary bias from a crowd, who may not have all its ducks together in the first place. And the Us vs. Them-thought process was any different maybe? Here's something to chew on why fitness is more advantageous than perilous unless you're a completely reprehensible glutton: Fitness saves lives Fitness saves mental health Fitness renews marriages The list could go on, however, to solidify these points and to provide more, we called in Kiola Raines to the show this week. Kiola has an extensive portfolio from certified nutrition coach to being a Peer Support Specialist. She has worked in many facets of the fitness industry and has used this knowledge to inject some positive physical education into the recovery community. She joins us on DIS Live to tell her story and to shed some much-needed light and details on how physical activity above physicality is how the ‘twain is to be met. Happy New Year 2023! We have a surprising Lunar Eclipse in Taurus coming up on Tuesday! What will it bring us? Celeste also shares some thoughts on current news and how it fits from an astrological perspective. 05:31 – Celeste's thoughts on Mars retrograde (Rx) in Gemini during this eclipse season. Mars is also in a square to Neptune in Pisces and is quincunx Pluto in Capricorn. Be sure to grab your eclipse season video series to help you navigate these waters! 07:12 – This week's three big things: First, yesterday, Venus opposed Uranus in Taurus. And today, Venus in Scorpio squares Saturn in Aquarius. Relationships are under pressure! Did someone do something surprising? Relationships have a "big beginnings and big endings" flavor. Folks most affected will have planets in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. 09:38 – Second, the intense Taurus Lunar Eclipse on Tuesday will activate the Saturn-Uranus square. The Moon is conjunct Uranus during this eclipse, which can feel chaotic. Celeste ponders how the astrology will show up in the US mid-term elections. Vote! If you haven't been able to vote early, try to get to the polls early in the day on Election Day! Also, the Sun is parallel fixed star Sirius, the shining one/ scorcher. Mars is parallel fixed star Alcyone. Tune in to learn more. 15:03 – Third, Mercury will go Cazimi! This means that Mercury joins up with the Sun in Scorpio, in the heart of the Sun! Mercury and the Sun will then oppose Uranus (shocks and awe) and square Saturn (consequences or rewards for behavior). 16:45 – On Sunday, the theme is EGOTISM. Ego-based actions can lead to regrets. The Moon enters Taurus at 9:14 pm PT. 18:36 – On Monday, the word of the day is ROOTED. Drop an imaginary anchor to help yourself ground. 19:26 – Tuesday's focus is BONKERS. Election day in the USA. Expect the unexpected. The Lunar Eclipse is at 16 Taurus at 3:02 am PT. Celeste loves Lynda Hill's interpretation of the Sabian Symbols. 22:18 – On Wednesday, the word is ACCUSATIONS. Check your facts and sources. Don't believe everything you hear. The Moon enters Gemini at 5:36 am PT. 24:47 – On Thursday, the theme is SPECTACLES. The circus is in town. Be the observer. Consider the archetypal energy of Mars retrograde square Neptune. 26:03 – On Friday, the emphasis is CLOSURE. What are you releasing and putting behind you? The Moon enters Cancer at 4:22 pm PT. 27:52 – On Saturday, the word is SPREAD. Do a tarot or oracle reading for yourself. The Disseminating Moon phase begins at 5 Cancer at 2:22 am PT. 29:32 – Thanks for listening to Celestial Insights! The Lord's Name naturally fills their minds, and they are absorbed in the Shabad, the Word of the True Lord. They redeem their generations, and they themselves obtain the state of liberation. The Supreme Lord God is pleased with those who fall at the Guru's Feet. Servant Nanak is the Lord's slave; by His Grace, the Lord preserves his honor. || 1 || THIRD MEHL: In egotism, one is assailed by fear; he passes his life totally troubled by fear. Egotism is such a terrible disease; he dies, to be reincarnated — he continues coming and going. Those who have such pre-ordained destiny meet with the True Guru, God Incarnate. O Nanak, by Guru's Grace, they are redeemed; their egos are burnt away through the Word of the Shabad. || 2 || PAUREE: The Lord's Name is my immortal, unfathomable, imperishable Creator Lord, the Architect of Destiny. I serve the Lord's Name, I worship the Lord's Name, and my soul is imbued with the Lord's Name. I know of no other as great as the Lord's Name; the Lord's Name shall deliver me in the end. The Generous Guru has given me the Lord's Name; blessed, blessed are the Guru's mother and father. I ever bow in humble reverence to my True Guru; meeting Him, I have come to know the Lord's Name. || 16 || --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gsjhampur/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gsjhampur/support
Preached by Fr. Eric Nicolai on January 16, 2022, at Lyncroft Centre in Toronto. Luke 18:10: The pharisee and tax collector in the temple… Egotism has a lot in common with parasites... When it settles in the soul, there is no medication that can definitively expel it. It comes back again and again. It reproduces itself constantly. It reappears at the worst times and it takes us a while to realize the immense damage it does to us. So how can we get rid of it? Spiritual egotism is rampant today with the commercialization of everything. Some self-appointed gatekeepers want to lock people out of their chosen paths to spiritual healing. As well-intentioned as they may be, their efforts are frequently problematic and not framed by good information.Shamanic teacher, John Moore offers an alternative way to think about cultural appropriation and a way to approach people who are on a spiritual path. There is a way to include people spiritually, but not exploit or disrespect cultures.John calls for more connection and less separation. Spiritually we are all the same, and all connected. Life is hard enough without adding the global pandemic. How do we support each other's spiritual journey with less judgment and less egotism?
Confidence is a belief in oneself. A feeling or belief that you can do something well or succeed at something. Confidence is a general sense of belief and trust in your own ability to control your life. Egotism is the practice of talking and thinking about oneself excessively because of an undue sense of self-importance. A drive to maintain and enhance favorable views of oneself in regard for one's own talents or achievements; conceit, self-importance; acting with only one's own interests in mind that one is superior to or more important than others. In this episode, John and Ashley explain the difference and how to develop confidence and end egotism. Theme song: "Kiss Chase" by Chloe Adams. Used with permission. In this episode I want to ask the question, "Does Jehovah's Witnesses and other high control groups and fundamentalist sects foster narcissism and egotism?" It is a question and observation I have been wrestling with for a number of years and I thought I would throw the question out there to you, the viewers and the listeners, to get your views on this topic. Please feel free to post your comments in the comments section below.
