Katherine Heiny has traveled one of the more interesting and bonkers roads into publishing we've heard in a while. She was published by The New Yorker at the incredible age of 25. Praised as a prodigy, her work appeared in an anthology alongside Alice Munro, Raymond Carver and Ann Beattie. And then she disappeared. She popped back up two decades later when she published her first story collection, Single, Carefree, Mellow – followed by two novels, Early Morning Riser and Standard Deviation, and now she's back with another story collection. In those intervening years, she married a former spy, wrote 25 young adult books under a pen name, and emerged the hilarious and gut-punching writer she is today. Games & Rituals came out last year. Katherine joins Marrie Stone to talk about the collection, what writing YA brought to her fiction, the situation versus the story and finding the aboutness of your story, what the short story form allows her to do that the novel does not, how to weave backstory into your short stories, fictionalizing real life events, Katherine's thoughts about publishing and so much more. You've tried the black out curtain, sound machine, weighted blanket, reward, sleep consultant, prayer and routine and you kiddo is still an early morning riser. Well, same! I'd say you are in dang good company! My oldest is approaching 6 and quiet literally from the time he was born until now, he's been an early morning riser. I remember obsessing over our routine, his food, the schedule and feeling complete panic each day as I wearily awaited the outcome of my efforts to see what time he'd wake up. Back then it was between 4:00-5:00 am each day, and now he is a solid 5:45/6:00 am and I AM GRATEFUL. I've had my fair share of negative thoughts around this still and this past week I gained a new perspective on his early mornings that has me welcoming him into my routine to journal and workout with great JOY! It's like I finally "get it!!!" I want to share this perspective with you in the hopes that you start your day with peace, even if it's at 5:30 am with your little one. You can join me in my 12 weeks of coaching for New Years of 2024 by clicking HERE! I only coach through this incredible course twice a year and this is your chance! We go deep into self-discovery and healing work so you can retrain your mindset to know how freaking unstoppable and completely WHOLE you are. Write-Off with Francesca Steele

My guest this week is Katherine Heiny, who I'm happy to report is as funny in person and she is on the page. When I first approached Katherine for this podcast she told me that she had 9 million insecurities but rejection wasn't one of them, and I thought, ok, maybe she's not right for Write-Off. But then she kept writing back over the next couple of days adding caveats and comments and it became clear that in fact she did have things to say about rejection but perhaps not things that we all usually think of. In a way that makes a lot of sense. Katherine had her first published short story - How To Give the Wrong Impression, about a woman secretly in love with her flatmate, published in The New Yorker when she was 25 and had recently finished a writing masters at Columbia. She's since written a short story collection that is one my favourites ever, Single Carefree Mellow, and two novels, Standard Deviation, a tender, hilarious book about marriage and parenting that Kate Atkinson called "a marvel", and her latest recently released novel, Early Morning Riser, which is also so incredibly funny, wise and warm. Katherine is very good at finding the comedy in everyday life. But there were two decades between that precocious New Yorker success and the publication of Single Carefree Mellow - Katherine was in her forties with she became a debut author under her own name - and they were not always easy years. Katherine and I talked about how she writes jokes, writing YA under a pseudonym in her twenties, what it felt like to take years off from writing to raise her children and the meanest knock backs she's ever had.Just a reminder that you can find and buy books by all my guests here: https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/francescasteeleYou can find me on Twitter here: @francescasteele Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. wise, bighearted, boundlessly joyful novel of love, disaster, and unconventional family Jane falls in love with Duncan easily. He is charming, good-natured, and handsome but unfortunately, he has also slept with nearly every woman in Boyne City, Michigan. Jane sees Duncan’s old girlfriends everywhere–at restaurants, at the grocery store, even three towns away. While Jane may be able to come to terms with dating the world’s most prolific seducer of women, she wishes she did not have to share him quite so widely. His ex-wife, Aggie, a woman with shiny hair and pale milkmaid skin, still has Duncan mow her lawn. His coworker, Jimmy, comes and goes from Duncan’s apartment at the most inopportune times. Sometimes Jane wonders if a relationship can even work with three people in it–never mind four. Five if you count Aggie’s eccentric husband, Gary. Not to mention all the other residents of Boyne City, who freely share with Jane their opinions of her choices. But any notion Jane had of love and marriage changes with one terrible car crash. Soon Jane’s life is permanently intertwined with Duncan’s, Aggie’s, and Jimmy’s, and Jane knows she will never have Duncan to herself. But could it be possible that a deeper kind of happiness is right in front of Jane’s eyes?
