It's Wednesday, August 14th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nicaragua detained a dozen Roman Catholic leaders Authorities in Nicaragua continue to crack down on religious leaders in the country. Police detained a dozen leaders of the Roman Catholic Church recently. Police arrested one of the priests while he was preparing to ordain several deacons and told him he did not have permission to do so. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has been cracking down on dissent. One bishop faced over 20 years in prison for criticizing the regime.  Nicaragua is ranked 30th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian.   Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Middle East-N. Africa most religious New data from Pew Research revealed how important religion is to people around the world and how often they pray. The most religious places were in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East-North Africa region. The least religious places tended to be in Europe and East Asia.  People in sub-Saharan Africa were among the mostly likely to say religion is important to them with most being Christian or Muslim. Latin Americans were the most likely to pray daily. The United States was slightly below average on daily prayer. And people in European nations were the least likely to say religion is important to them. Psalm 9:17 warns, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Trump tells Musk: After assassination attempt, “I'm more of a believer” Tech billionaire Elon Musk  interviewed former President Donald Trump for nearly two hours Monday night on X, formerly known as Twitter. Musk said the conversation has garnered one billion views. He endorsed Trump after the failed assassination attempt on the former president.  The two discussed immigration, inflation, the assassination attempt, and Trump's political agendas. If re-elected, Trump said one of his first acts would be to close the Department of Education and move education back to the states. Trump also said it was a miracle he was still alive after the assassination attempt. Listen. TRUMP: “The bigger miracle was that I was looking in the exact direction of the shooter. And so it hit -- it hit me at an angle that was far less destructive than any other angle. So, that was the miracle. That was …” MUSK: “Yeah!” TRUMP: “For those people who don't believe in God, I think we got to all start thinking about that. I'm a believer. Now, I'm more of a believer.” Campus Faith Alliance affirms student religious free speech Last week, the Religious Freedom Institute announced the launch of a new student initiative, the Campus Faith Alliance. The new initiative seeks to promote religious freedom and freedom of speech on college campuses.  David Trimble, the president of the Religious Freedom Institute, told The Christian Post, “People of faith are increasingly pushed to the margins of American society, and this marginalization is occurring with even greater intensity on public university campuses. “Religious freedom says, ‘I can disagree with you even on life's most important questions while still respecting your dignity.' This message needs to be relearned on many campuses today, and the Campus Faith Alliance can be a vehicle for such renewal.” Kansas, Idaho, and Missouri fighting Abortion Kill Pill Back in June, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a lawsuit that challenged the Food and Drug Administration's approval of the abortion kill pill. However, several states are still fighting to restrict the drug. Kansas, Idaho, and Missouri are renewing the challenge in the coming weeks.  Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach said, “We are confident, as the case begins moving again, we will prevail. It is likely that this case may end up back at the Supreme Court. It is a question of major national importance.”  Small rise in inflation; Small rise in stocks Wholesale inflation rose less than expected last month. The producer price index measures the prices that producers pay for goods and services before they reach customers. That index rose by only  0.1% compared to June. Wholesale prices reflect a broader slowdown in price increases.  U.S. stocks rose in response to the news. The S&P 500 was up 1.5% yesterday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.9%. And the Nasdaq Composite was up 2.2%.  Olympic gold medalist sings Gospel song at press conference And finally, another Paris Olympian praised God after winning a medal. Last Friday, Germany's Yemisi Ogunleye won gold in the women's shot put  with a throw that spanned 65 feet and 6 inches. She slipped and fell on her first attempt due to rainy conditions. However, she said she overcame the setback with God's help, encouraging herself by singing a Gospel song. Listen to her sing it again for reporters. REPORTER: “Yemisi, is it true you sing in the Gospel Choir?” OGUNLEYE:  “Yes.” REPORTER: “What song was going through your head tonight?” OGUNLEYE:  (laughs) “So, after falling, I went back to my seat, and I sang a song. It means ‘I almost let go.' It goes like this. (laughs) “I almost let go. I was quite at the edge of a breakthrough, but couldn't see it. The Devil really had me, but Jesus came and grabbed me. He held me close so I wouldn't let go. God's mercy kept me so I wouldn't let go. “So, I'm here today because God kept me. I'm alive today only because of His grace. Oh, He kept me. God kept me. God's mercies kept me so I wouldn't let go. “That was the song that I was just singing at the time. (clapping) “After seeing where the shot landed, and I knew it's hopefully gonna be enough for the gold medal, I just went on my knees and said, ‘Thank you, Jesus.'” 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”  Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, August 14th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. While technology moves ahead with seemingly lightning speed, it's sad to say that in the realm of religious freedom, we as a culture are moving backwards. This week, the Religious Freedom Summit wrapped up in Washington, DC. One of lead participant was Eric Patterson, president of the Religious Freedom Institute in the nation's capital. He spoke to Lighthouse Faith podcast just before the summit began, but already knew what the pressing issues would be. The basic human right to worship how you want, to live out your faith is under assault. In fact, worldwide we are worse off than we were 15 years ago. In Nigeria, Christians are being slaughtered. In China, the Communist regime is trying to mold faith in Jesus into a subservient of the party line. Even in Muslim majority countries, if you don't practice the type of Islam that's acceptable, you could be ostracized, or even killed. What's at stake here is what it means to be human. No one can take that away, but the evil in this world is trying its best. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas, and Israel's response to it, has raised anew questions about the morality of warfare. Throughout their long history, Christian thinkers have not had one mind about these questions, but the majority of them have adhered to the just war tradition. This tradition acknowledges that “political authorities are responsible for promoting the good and deterring evil,” as Eric Patterson puts it. That responsibility may involve waging war. In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I'm talking to Patterson about how war can be just. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Eric Patterson, Ph.D., is president of the Religious Freedom Institute and scholar-at-large and former dean of the Robertson School of Government at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He previously served in the United States military and at the U.S. State Department. He has authored and edited numerous books on the ethics of war, most recently, A Basic Guide to the Just War Tradition, published in October by Baker Academic. ————— This episode of the Influence podcast is brought to you by My Healthy Church, distributors of Momentum Training Series. Just War theory is one of the most significant contributions of Christianity to the world. On a recent episode of Breakpoint This Week, Dr. Eric Patterson, president of the Religious Freedom Institute and a political scientist who has done extensive work on the subject, discussed how the Just War tradition can help us think through the atrocities of Hamas and the retaliation by Israel. In fact, Patterson's new book, entitled A Basic Guide to the Just War Tradition, is among the best primers available on Just War theory.    In our conversation, Dr. Patterson argued that governments have a God-given obligation to defend the innocent. As he put it,    "There's a whole superstructure in the Bible on certain principles. One is governance. God created the family as a unit of governance. He created the Church as a unit of governance within its sphere. And we know in the Old and the New Testament, such as in Romans 13, there's a principle of government authority to protect and defend. The Bible has a lot to say about vocations, including those called the security and foreign policy vocations: Nehemiah, Joseph, in the New Testament, centurions and others. And so, there's never a teaching in the Bible that Christians are supposed to step outside of those public service vocations to protect and defend." Still, some Christians who take seriously Jesus' command to love their enemies have a hard time seeing how that should play out when it comes to nations at war. Ultimately, it is the command to love our neighbors that grounds the Christian responsibility, of both individuals and governments, to oppose evil through proper channels of authority. The love of our enemies, which Christ commanded, should inform how we oppose evil. In as much, Dr. Patterson argues, intentions matter:    "I think what the Just War tradition helps us with is looking at Israeli politics, looking at leaders and things and asking the question, 'Is the reason you're doing this out of love of neighbor, love of country, or have you strayed over this line where you are full of hate and what you really want to do is out of wrath, out of hatred, out of bitterness?'" When the enemy is dehumanized, Patterson argues, the war devolves away from justice. Of course, Hamas has never seen Jews as fully human. Israel, on the other hand, has placed itself under the obligations of international law, which has been shaped by the Christian Just War tradition. They've committed to be proportional in their response, though that is not measured mathematically. They've committed to distinguish between civilians and combatants, though that does not mean they are responsible every time a civilian is killed. They've committed to treat prisoners humanely and to wage war with a view toward peace in the end.     These commitments impose a heavy burden on those who fight, and they stand in direct contrast to Hamas, Boko Haram, ISIS, or the Taliban. Their way of waging terror and warfare comes, in the words of Philos Project founder Robert Nicholson, from “drinking from a different ideological well” of radical Islam.   Dr. Patterson put it,    "The reason that we've had a half dozen coups in West Africa in the past three years is because governments there, and often friendly Christians and Muslims working together, are so dispirited that the West and Western-supported governments have not been able to stop the black flag of Islamic State in West Africa. We see this with the Taliban and others. I think we have a lot of examples of this type of ruthless, violent Islamism that justifies violence against its neighbors."  Everyone, including Muslims, suffers at the hands of radical Islam. Ideas have consequences. Bad ideas have victims.  Christians have a different view of people, of our friends and of our enemies. We believe in justice and in peace, and most importantly, in the Prince of Peace. May His judgment come swiftly—and may Christians bear faithful witness until then.    This Breakpoint was co-authored by Kasey Leander. Is there liberal opposition to what is going on, even in a more diverse India with a raucous democratic tradition? Synopsis: Each fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh presents an Asian perspective of the biggest global talking points with expert guests.  In this episode, we discuss how and why, across the complex region of South Asia, majorities are convinced that minorities are a threat. And what role does the community, representing perhaps 0.2 percent of Pakistan's 208 million population, play in Pakistan's politics, a democracy that has seen the Ahmadi, a religious minority boycotting the elections for over three decades? What does their boycott tell about the role religion has played in Pakistan's nationalist politics? And to help us do this, we are joined by a well-known Pakistani writer based in Washington, D.C. Farahnaz Ispahani. Besides writing for national and international papers, Ispahani has also worked at ABC News, CNN and MSNBC as a journalist. It's Thursday, September 15th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldeview.com) By Jonathan Clark China restricts Christians online China's new “Administrative Measures for Internet Religious Information Services” went into full effect earlier this month. Over the past six months, China has been rolling out the new restrictions to limit individuals and institutions from sharing religious information online. For months now, house churches have had their WeChat accounts destroyed and their websites taken down. China sees Christianity as a threat and has been trying to sinicize the church by injecting Chinese nationalism and socialism into its teaching. Under the new laws, only organizations with a “Internet Religious Information Service License” can share online preaching and religious content.  In Acts 5, the high priest asked the apostles, “‘Did we not strictly command you not to teach in [Jesus'] name?' ... But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: ‘We ought to obey God rather than men.'” 50 million slaves worldwide The new Global Estimates of Modern Slavery report found about 50 million people worldwide were living in modern slavery last year. Twenty-eight million people were in forced labor and 22 million in forced marriages. That's 10 million more people in modern slavery now than in 2016. Women and children are still the most vulnerable. Asia and the Pacific is the region with the most people living in forced labor or forced marriages. However, as a proportion of the population, the Arab States have the most people living in modern slavery. Poll: Upcoming election a referendum on Biden A recent Rasmussen poll found voters view the upcoming midterm elections as a referendum on President Joe Biden instead of being about individual candidates and issues. Forty-six percent of likely voters view the midterms as a referendum on Biden; 40% are more concerned with individual candidates and issues; and 14% are undecided. The “undecideds” must be living in a cave. Republicans were more likely than Democrats or Independents to view the election as a referendum on Biden's agenda.  Americans spend more on taxes than food, clothing, & medical care New data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics found Americans spent more on taxes last year than they did on food, clothing, and health care combined. In 2021, the average household spent $15,495.28 on food, clothing, and health care while spending $16,729.73 in taxes to federal, state and local governments. U.S. abortion terrorists have attacked 63 pro-life groups A new report by the Religious Freedom Institute found pro-abortion activists in the U.S. attacked at least 63 pro-life organizations across 26 states since the leak of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.  Perpetrators have also attacked over 30 churches since the Supreme Court leak. The attacks have included firebombing, vandalism, and deadly threats. Nathaniel Hurd, senior fellow for public policy at Religious Freedom Institute, told CBN News the government has been silent in response to these attacks.   HURD: “In terms of headquarters-level, the leadership from the FBI and the Department of Justice and from the Department of Homeland Security, for the most part, has been silence.” West Virginia legislature protects babies from conception Now that the West Virginia legislature passed an abortion ban, the only abortion mill in West Virginia has stopped killing babies, reports LifeNews.com. Republican Governor Jim Justice is expected to sign it soon. The West Virginia legislature has passed a bill to ban abortions, protecting babies starting at conception. West Virginia will become the 16th state to ban abortions. Alliance Defending Freedom's letter to 50 U.S. Senators On Tuesday, Alliance Defending Freedom sent a letter to all 50 U.S. Senators on behalf of over 2,000 churches and ministries. The letter calls on Senators to oppose the deceptively titled “Respect for Marriage Act.” The act would not only enshrine faux same-sex marriage into federal law but would also threaten the religious liberty of Americans who hold Biblical views on marriage. The letter states, “Our view of the distinct nature of men and women, the union of a husband and wife, and the blessing of any children born into a marriage, should not be erased from or punished under our laws.” U.S. Christians to fall below 50% by 2070 And finally, a new study from Pew Research estimates the number of self-identified Christians in the U.S. could fall below 50% by 2070 if recent trends continue. In the 1970s, about 90% of Americans identified as Christian. Since the 1990s, many Americans have been switching their religious identity to atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular.”  In 2020, 64% of Americans identified as Christian; 30% identified as religiously unaffiliated; and 6% identified with another religion. Romans 11:4-5 reminds us, “But what does the divine response say to him? ‘I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.' Even so then, at this present time, there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, September 15th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - Pope Francis in his Angelus address on Sunday honored an Italian missionary sister who was killed by Islamist terrorists in Mozambique. Speaking from the window of the Apostolic Palace on September 11, the pope said: “In this moment of prayer, it is dear to me to remember Sister Maria de Coppi, Combonian missionary, killed in Chipene, Mozambique, where she served with love for almost 60 years.” “May her witness give strength and courage to Christians and all the people of Mozambique.” Sister Maria de Coppi was shot and killed last week as terrorists ransacked and burned the Catholic mission where she served in Mozambique's Diocese of Nacala. The Italian priests and sisters who served at the mission were able to evacuate 68 students who were living at the mission before the church, boarding houses, rectory, and school were destroyed in the five-hour attack on the night of September 6. Sister Maria was about to flee with the other missionaries when she turned back out of concern for the 12 female students who had stayed behind at the mission, according to the pontifical charity Aid to the Church in Need. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252263/pope-francis-honors-nun-killed-by-islamist-terrorists-in-mozambique A new report from the Religious Freedom Institute quantifies and analyzes the many reported incidents of violence against pro-life people and entities since May and offers recommendations for government officials on how to respond. The RFI concluded that conditions remain in place for more attacks against pro-life entities and people to occur in 2022 and into 2023. According to data compiled by CNA, at least 32 Catholic churches in the United States have been vandalized with a clear pro-abortion motive since the May leak, along with at least 50 pro-life pregnancy centers. Taking a broader view, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has tracked some 164 total attacks against Catholic entities across 37 states and the District of Columbia since May 2020. The report recommends that pro-life organizations devote more resources to security and security training for staff and volunteers, invest in relationships with law enforcement agencies, and step up their insurance. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252249/report-assesses-threats-to-religious-pro-life-americans-following-overturn-of-roe-v-wade The political group CatholicVote is inviting Christians nationwide to pray a novena asking for Saint Michael's intercession amid the growing number of attacks targeting churches and pro-life pregnancy centers in the United States. The novena will begin on September 20 and conclude on September 29, the feast of the archangels. Catholics who “pledge to pray” online will receive access to the novena prayers and an email reminder each day to pray. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252258/catholicvote-to-hold-saint-michael-novena-in-defense-of-churches-pregnancy-centers Today, the Church celebrates Blessed Apollinaris Franco, a Spanish Franciscan who evangelized covertly in Japan in the 17th century and was burned at the stake by authorities in Nagasaki. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/blessed-apollinaris-franco-592

In recent years, Algerian authorities have shown more hostility towards religious minorities, forcibly closing dozens of Protestant churches and prosecuting Ahmadiyya Muslims for gathering without authorization for the purposes of worship. Algerian courts are also increasingly enforcing Algeria's blasphemy and anti-proselytization laws, targeting Christians, Muslims, and free thinkers. USCIRF recommends that the U.S. Department of State include Algeria on its Special Watch List for engaging in or tolerating severe violations of religious freedom. The State Department is scheduled to release its list of designations in November.  Miles Windsor, who covers North Africa and the Middle East for the Religious Freedom Institute, joins us today to expand upon the religious freedom situation in Algeria.

The environment we find ourselves in after 9/11 has made it very difficult for our community to simultaneously continue living an Islamic life and meeting the demands of our daily existence. This atmosphere has given rise to what can only be called a liberal inquisition, the constant reminder that we should be defensive about our faith and that what we believe is somehow out of sync with modernity. In this febrile atmosphere, some have called for more radical action to affirm the faith of our families and community. If the next generation is to survive, maybe we need to more proactively build community institutions that nurture true conviction and assert more readily our priorities, free from the tedious scrutiny of wider society. This is where Muslims have engaged with the Benedict Option of Rod Dreher. What creates greater religious freedom and peaceful diverse societies? Many cultures and religious beliefs teach respect for people of different beliefs, yet we see persecution of religious minorities throughout South and Southwest Asia, from Hindu nationalists who persecute Muslims in India to radical Sunni Muslims who persecute Ahmadiyya in Pakistan. Christians also suffer discrimination and mistreatment in these regions and are the most persecuted religious group globally according to a study by the University of Notre Dame's Center for Ethics and Culture and the Religious Freedom Institute. Many thoughtful Muslims acknowledge that radical Islamism leads to terrorism and religious persecution. The reasons for its emergence are complex. What can be done about it?Join us for a discussion on fostering religious freedom and peace with Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, the President of Oxford Centre for Training, Research, Advocacy & Dialogue, the 106th Bishop of Rochester, and the former Bishop of Raiwind in Pakistan, and Hussain Haqqani, former Pakistani ambassador to the United States and Senior Fellow and Director for South and Central Asia at Hudson Institute. A number of recent studies indicate that religious freedom improves economies, undermines religious-related terrorism, and promotes the long-term stability and civility of society, among other things. Regarding the first point, one recent article estimated the contribution of religion to the US economy to be $2.1 trillion per year. Sadly, though, there has been a dramatic downturn in these freedoms globally; and even in the United States – founded largely on such freedoms – we have seen an erosion of them. Since 84% of people worldwide follow a religion, and three-quarters of the world’s population – 5.1 billion people – live in countries with significant religious hostilities or restrictions, it’s important to consider this issue.Today we’ll be examining the benefits of religious freedom and challenge our listeners to seriously consider supporting it. We’ll be talking about this with Tom Farr, the President of the Religious Freedom Institute. Tom also directs Georgetown University's Religious Freedom Research Project, and is an Associate Professor at Georgetown's Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Service.
