It's Casual Friday! Sam is BACK from jury duty! He speaks with Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to round up the week in news. First, Sam runs through updates on the US' airstrike in Syria, Israel's tank raids in Gaza, the climbing death toll in Gaza, UAW labor action, the shooter still on the run in Maine, Mike Johnson's Speakership, Georgia's gerrymander, and George Santos' standing within the NY GOP. Ryan Grim then joins as he and Sam walk through Biden's decision to bomb Iranian facilities in Syria in an attempt to *prevent* the Israel-Gaza conflict from becoming regional, before stepping back to look at the problems with Biden's greater approach to the ethnic cleansing in Gaza, including his recent choice to legitimize doubts about the internationally-backed numbers of Gaza's Ministry of Health, and his full-throated backing of Israel's mission. After tackling some of the other responses we've seen from the US left, Grim and Sam watch some of Mike Johnson's theocratic highlights through the years as they explore the absurdity of his speakership, and the Republican party as a whole, before wrapping up with an assessment of the Matt Gaetz of it all. And in the Fun Half: Sam talks with Russell from Dallas about gun control activism, Sam from Boston discusses his roots as a Christian Gazan, the devastating impact of the war on his community, and the interfaith nature of Palestine and Palestinians. Republicans attempt to claim Trans rights interfere with school shootings, Jamie from Maine expands on the states' upcoming referendums, and Donald Trump continues to lead the GOP's presidential hopefuls. What if I was to tell you the Republican Party's villain-in-chief, the main protagonist in the Republican Party's “Democrats are socialists” Big Lie, Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez is an ideological moderate serving in a likewise still moderate Democratic Party? Understandably, you wouldn't believe me, so I would have to present some pretty compelling evidence to change your mind. Enter that evidence: VoteView. What is VoteView? VoteView is a data analysis tool built by a group of now famous political scientists that measures the ideological behavior of members of Congress, from it's very first session to the current 118th. It does so in an innovative way. Rather than look at members' campaign platforms, policy position memos, ads, and stump speeches for their stated ideology, VoteView populates its ideology scores using the non-unanimous roll call votes of members of Congress. Each vote, on each contentious bill, by each member of the House, and each senator, enters a model as a series of meaningless 0s and 1s which indicate whether each member who voted on a vote voted yeah or nay. This means the model calculates an ideological score without even knowing who the member is, what each vote was about, which party the member serves in, or whether they serve in a swing or safe seat. The scores range from -1 to 1 with -1 being the most liberal score and 1 being the most conservative. IIt is important to understand how to interpret VoteView scores. -1 to +1 is a narrow scale, the difference so between a 0.5 score and a 0.8 score is substantial! In VoteView a score equal or less than 0.5 (positive or negative) is a “moderate” score. A score like positive or negative 0.8 means the member is a strong ideologue. The Cycle- On Substack is a reader-supported publication on a mission to bring better strategy to the Democratic Party. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. #TeamDemocracyUnlike member scores from GovTrack, VoteView is blind to the topic of the vote AND (and this is very important) plots ideology for each member as they relate to every other member of both parties. This means that we can get a full, largely unbiased, measurement of each member's ideology, but we can also measure ideological change across both time and chamber of Congress (House or Senate). In plain English, that means we can compare how polarized Congress has been across different points of America's 236 years of constitutional history. As you can see from the graph below (which does not yet include the current 118th session) the ideological distribution of each party in the House and Senate has changed considerably across time. The gaps between the red line (Republicans) and the blue line (Democrats) have narrowed and enlarged at different points of American political development. A large gap between the red and blue lines means high levels of polarization. Now, look closely at the two yellow loops I marked out and you will see we are currently as polarized as we were in the 1850s heading into Civil War. Good times! You should also be able to see that Republicans have moved further to the right than Democrats have moved to the left. The data don't lie: Republicans have polarized more than Democrats in Congress. Mapped Ideology of the Legislative Branch: 1st session to the 117th Session Now, lets take a look at what VoteView data can tell us about the ideological make-up of the 118th Congress, our current Congress. Ideology of the 118th House of Representatives Ideology of the 118th Senate What you are seeing above are two plot graphs that show the ideology scores for each of the 435 current members of the House and 100 members of the Senate. Again, the blue dots are Democrats, the red dots are Republicans. The axis of relevance here is the X axis (the bottom axis) which displays a dot for each member of each respective chamber to show where they fall along that -1 to 1 ideology score range. Two things that should stand out are the number of red dots versus blue dots that are on the respective ellipses (ends) as well as proximity of each cluster of dots to the middle of the plot because that middle reflects ideological scores close to 0 (perfect moderation) while the ellipses are scores that max out as very conservative/very liberal. If you look closely, you should see a clear asymmetry between the parties in terms of ideological extremism. Here's a fun fact: there are 7 Republican senators who are more conservative than Elizabeth Warren is liberal (Schmitt, Tuberville, Paul, Lee, Vance, Cruz, Braun) and although Warren is by far the most liberal Democrat in the senate (liberal score of -0.752) she is nowhere near as liberal as Mike Lee and Rand Paul are conservative (0.891, respectively). She is an outlier, they are an entire caucus. As for AOC?AOC is just the 180th most liberal Democrat in the House of Representatives. Given that there are only currently 212 Democrats, that's pretty damn moderate! Now, you might be wondering, “Rachel, what does this even mean?” It means that America doesn't have a “both sides” problem, it has a Republican Party problem. And that, my friends, brings us to my conversation with David Corn about his recent book American Psychosis: A Historical Investigation of How the Republican Party Went Crazy, which is the feature of this Finally Back from Summer pod. As many of you know, Corn is the DC Bureau Chief of Mother Jones magazine and an intrepid investigative reporter who's so inside the Beltway he's outside it. What you may not know is that David offers a newsletter called Our Land which you can subscribe to here. So, how exactly did the Republican Party go crazy? A few weeks ago the left-wing writer and critic Freddie DeBoer published an essay in New York magazine, in which he argued that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become “just a regular old Democrat now.” The piece described left-wing dissatisfaction with AOC's record in Congress as an outgrowth of a larger left-wing disaffection with U.S. politics, and concluded the Democratic Party is simply structurally resistant to socialist change. DeBoer generated a lot of warranted counter-criticism, but also captured something very real about the sentiments of marginal Democrats—the ones who might vote blue as means of blocking authoritarians from victory, or who might abstain from voting when left-wing candidates lose their primaries. In that world, disenchantment with AOC and the left wing of the Democratic Party is palpable, and raises some interesting questions: Is their disenchantment rooted in real grievances? Are Democratic politics really so resistant to left-wing pressure that the Democratic Socialists of America ought to stop deluding themselves? What could DSA or future AOCs do to have a bigger impact on policy, one that wouldn't leave so many of its members with the sense that it's all pointless? Host Brian Beutler moderates a debate between Eric Levitz, a New York Magazine writer who wrote a lengthy critique of the DeBoer article, and Ryan Grim, the DC Bureau Chief of The Intercept and author of the forthcoming book The Squad.

They also discuss the corruption behind keeping Dianne Feinstein in her seat, as well as Rudy Giuliani's pardon scheme, and the lack of substance in the Durham investigation. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by Chapo Trap House's Matt Christman, to discuss his new podcast project Hell On Earth. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Senator John Fetterman's mental health, Rick Scott being forced to retreat his plan for sunsetting Medicare and Social Security, DeWine finally asking for FEMA's help, the reveal of a brand new GOP fraudster, and medical policy changes in North Dakota (good ones) and Idaho (bad ones), before jumping into the release of new information in Dominion's lawsuit against Fox, and Ohio's GOP representatives finally come around to speaking up for their constituents in East Palestine. Ryan Grim then joins as he walks through the coverage of the freight rail chemical spill in East Palestine and the important role of independent media in keeping the story afloat as Norfolk Southern attempted to sweep it under the rug, before tackling the utter failure of Pete Buttigieg's Department of Transportation in handling this issue and every other one they've faced. Next, Ryan, Sam, and Emma parse through the impact of Biden's State of the Union in getting the GOP to abandon their cuts to Social Security and Medicare, discuss public opinions on the war in Ukraine, both at home and abroad, and dive into the complete defamation debacle that Fox is facing after intra-office messages were leaked flaunting their lies about election fraud. Next, Matt Christman dissects his most recent endeavor “Hell On Earth,” which walks through the evolution from feudalism to capitalism in Europe, first looking at the collision of the 30 Years' War and a small environmental emergency and how it spurred a complete economic emergency on the continent, while protestant reformation and political realignments saw various alternatives emerge. Christman then looks to the English revolution and the purification of the church with a new understanding of government led by parliament with growing tides of radical democracy, exploring how this realignment in England, despite the empire's minimal resources, opened the country up to take advantage of early capitalism and settler-colonialism, launching it to the peak of European power and pushing the West to fully embrace capitalism as the economic model. They wrap up the interview by tackling some extra fun tidbits on Fox's lawsuit with Dominion. And in the fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through Jimmy Dore's appearance on Tim Pool's show to explain why Pfizer is the only real problem in the world to be skeptical about, and shows exactly why his anti-establishment shtick is meaningless. They also tackle Matt Walsh embarrassing himself on the Tennessee House floor, plus, your IMs! Ryan Grim then joins as he gets right into assessing the start of this term of a Republican-led House, walking through the central components of his concessions, beginning with the return to obsessing about the debt ceiling, before touching on the discharge petition, how it opens the door to Democratic legislation, and who's relevance in Congress it might increase. They also tackle the likelihood of a social security cut, whether Hakeem Jeffries will push a Stock Trading Ban, the Democrats' role in GOP committees, and the future of anti-trust and anti-inflation policy, before wrapping up the interview by analyzing the upcoming battle for Dianne Feinstein's seat. Then, Emma's joined by Lance of The Serfs TV to discuss their recent publication of old Matt Walsh clips, as well as the "Twitter Files." And, Emma is joined again by MR's own Matt Binder to discuss his recent unceremonious Twitter ban at the hands of Elon Musk! First, Emma runs through updates on Congress' spending bill, another 45-billion dollar increase to the Military budget, and Starbucks Workers United launching their biggest labor action yet. Ryan Grim then joins as he and Emma dive right into the recent drama behind Senator Bernie Sanders' war powers resolution, tackling why he delayed introducing it with the recent focus on labor issues, the impetus behind launching this effort after the vague success of his war powers resolution under Trump, and how he learned of Biden's White House campaigning against him. Next, Ryan dives into what the vetoed war powers resolution under Trump actually accomplished, walking through its restriction of over 90% of US support for the war in Yemen, and the recent ceasefire in the region starting in October. Expanding on this, Grim and Emma explore why the White House saw this war powers resolution as a threat to their preferred relationship with Saudi Arabia, seeing the final ~10% of support surrounding the US' aid of maintaining infrastructure as necessary to keep Saudi oil fields functioning, before wrapping up the subject by parsing through the history of MBS' war in Yemen and exploring the role it plays in relation to Russia' current invasion of Ukraine. They conclude the interview by diving into the PRESS Act that is being introduced to Congress, the conservative pushback from folks like Tom Cotton, and why it's going to be difficult for them to frame this issue negatively. Lance from the Serfs TV then joins as he talks #FreeBinder, walks through yesterday's ElonJet fiasco on Twitter, and explores Elon's authoritarian action drawing critique even from the least respectable of the Free-Speech™ journalism crew, before tackling Lance's research into Matt Walsh's history of being a small-scale theocratic creep. Finally, friend of the show Matt Binder joins as he walks through his perspective on Twitter's crackdown on any Musk-related journalism, the absurdity of banning people on a policy that doesn't exist yet, and the ridiculous nature of Elon unilaterally employing the exact tactics he was critiquing in his “Twitter Files.” And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Crew discuss ESVN talking points, the debate on Puerto Rican statehood, and watch Obama-era Crowder do his best Bigoted Philip DeFranco impression. Then, they're joined by Ryan Grim as they dive into Eric Swalwell's questioning of Catherine Glenn Foster, CEO and President of Americans United for Life, comparing the right's rhetoric to that of the Salem Witch trials (whose legal authors happened to have been cited by Justice Alito) in how they define concepts in a way that determines their outcome (if it's legal it's not abortion, if it's illegal it is), looking back to Todd Akin's statements on “legitimate rape” and the immediate backlash he faced in comparison to today's embrace of fundamentalism. Expanding on this, they take on the tactic of fear-mongering with medical professionals, as seen in the attacks on the 10 y/o's abortion provider, and how they seek to pretend some reproductive care is legitimate while clearly attempting to eradicate any access to such care, then shifting the conversation to the role of the US media and how ill-fitted it is to respond to this moment, from the Washington Post's Glenn Kessler's legitimization of the right's attempts to undermine this story (even though children under 15 receive abortions about once per week in Ohio) to the greater issue of media having no actual access to emerging stories – especially when potential sources are under intense legal pressure to stay silent. Next, they dive into state-level fights to preserve abortion, including Kansas' attempt to latch on to the “medical freedom” talking point, despite its role in undermining trust in medical care, and look at how this evangelical fundamentalism will continue to target social groups they want to police. Wrapping up the interview they tackle the Democrats' inability to take responsibility for Manchin and Sinema, both in terms of getting them on board with the party and disciplining them for their departures, and set up what to expect for the upcoming midterm election. The great Matthew Film Guy then joins as he discusses his discovery of the niche early 2000s indie production “Mean Girls,” discusses his ever-burgeoning film projects, and dives into the work of Hou Hsiao-hsien. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Biden Administration's response to Roe being overturned, the importance of Janeane Garofalo, and the threats against Pramila Jayapal that seem to fly under the media's radar. This gets Sam and Ryan into a discussion on corporate Dems, Manchin, Sinema, and Kelly, effectively sinking the Biden Administration's nomination for the Labor Department, and the general anemia of Biden and Democratic leadership. Shifting to the other crumbling party, Ryan and Sam look to the Republicans' tantrums during the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, spewing talking points about her being “weak on pedophilia” alongside their typical bad faith racist attacks, and the failure of the Democrats on the committee to properly respond to and amplify the absurdity of their opponents. Next, they look to the discussions around Medicare Advantage plans, how good insurance companies are at taking what they know about you and making you pay more because of it, and the connection between Democrats' refusal to associate with Medicare (despite its popularity) goes hand in hand with Democrats' refusal to do anything to expand it (despite its efficacy), before they wrap up with a discussion on the pathways of change for the CMS. They wrap up the interview with a discussion on Manchin's coal corruption and familial fraud, the state of states' gerrymandering, and Sam dives into the supply line, and gas industry price gouging. And in the Fun Half: Sam is caught BLUE-handed (because he's a lib!) by independent journalist and Substacker Ronald Raygun as he openly drinks store-bought apple cider and makes uncannily succinct comments, before Ken, Ken & Ken (no relation to Ken & Ken in the Morning) take on Sam's estrogen elitism and soyboy stupidity. The show is wrapped up with an incredibly passionate takedown of all things corrupt by fringe genius Danny Bruce and source A. A. Seeman.   Purchase tickets for the live show in Boston on May 15th HERE:   https://majorityreportradio.com/live-show-schedule Become a member at JoinTheMajorityReport.com: https://fans.fm/majority/join Subscribe to the AMQuickie newsletter here:  https://madmimi.com/signups/170390/join Join the Majority Report Discord! http://majoritydiscord.com/ Get all your MR merch at our store: https://shop.majorityreportradio.com/ Check out today's sponsors: sunsetlakecbd is a majority employee owned farm in Vermont, producing 100% pesticide free CBD products. Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at the Intercept, to discuss this week's top stories including the bipartisan infrastructure deal, Pelosi and Schumer's play for reconciliation bills, and more, plus, legendary comedian David Cross joins in the Fun Half. Ryan helps walk Emma and Sam through what these second hundred days of Biden's administration might look like; they explore how the Senate schedule will play out with the recent developments in the bipartisan Infrastructure Bill and what the reconciliation process might look like. Next, they look into the Republican's obstruction options and how the gang of ten deal with reconciliation just down the line has put Mitch McConnell in a tough spot, before they look into how the recent developments have eased a bit of the pressure on the bipartisan nuts like Manchin and Sinema, and what Manchin's voting bill might look like. Ryan, Emma, and Sam also cover progressives' role in the matter, how Bernie's 6 trillion marker has given the Democrats more wiggle room, and AOC's position on voting without a reconciliation bill at the ready. They round out the interview touching on taking a structural view of U.S. politics and how Biden might actually serve a transformative role if the neoliberal hegemonic order is really coming to a close. Emma and Sam also cover the massive impact vaccinations have had in lowering COVID death rates and spectate Biden's bipartisan deal announcement. And in the Fun Half: Body Language Expert David Cross joins Sam and Emma to look into the elements of the H3 debate that were previously left unsaid. He walks us through Stephen Crowder's petulancy, segregationist gesticulation, and inclination towards the fantastical when it comes to debating real-world issues. Then, Mitt Romney gets jealous of Sinema's and Manchin's bipartisan spotlight, Tucker Carlson sites another racial scientist in his crusade against Critical Race Theory, and Dick Morris explores he and his friends' sexual inclination towards their mothers in a vulnerable interview on Fox. In her book SAY IT LOUDER, media and political analyst Tiffany Cross provides a sweeping snapshot of American Democracy and the role that African Americans have played in its shaping. She critiques the lack of diversity in newsrooms that help shape America's discussion of politics and policy, but lack the diversity of voices that reflect American society. She writes that newsrooms are filled with people who, intentionally or not, prioritize issues impacting white people. And she exposes the political forces aligned to subvert and suppress Black voters. Tiffany D. Cross is an on-air political analyst and cable newsroom veteran. She previously served as the DC Bureau Chief of BET News and the Liaison to the Obama Administration for BET Networks where she covered Capitol Hill, produced political specials, and oversaw the daily operations of the news department. She was also a Resident Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics in the Spring 2020.

And she exposes the political forces aligned to subvert and suppress Black voters.Tiffany D. Cross is an on-air political analyst and cable newsroom veteran. She previously served as the DC Bureau Chief of BET News and the Liaison to the Obama Administration for BET Networks where she covered Capitol Hill, produced political specials, and oversaw the daily operations of the news department. She was also a Resident Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics in the Spring 2020.

As The Intercept’s DC Bureau Chief, Ryan Grim is well-positioned to assess the American political scene. This interview took place a few days before Bernie Sanders suspended his presidential campaign, but the writing was already on the wall. We all know that the movement still has work to do, but we're faced with different possible strategies now that we no longer have Bernie to shine a light and bring media attention to it. Steve and Ryan discuss where to go from here. Between the energy and attention generated by Bernie’s campaign and the coronavirus pandemic, the people have never been more open to progressive policies. For the first time, the idea of public health is taking hold. The US handling of the COVID-19 crisis is worse than anywhere else in the world. There’s an inescapable connection between that and the fact that we don’t have a real public health system in place. The patchwork quilt of private healthcare simply doesn’t work. The mainstream media joined Bernie’s opponents in insisting we can’t afford universal single-payer healthcare -- and they’re all now exposed as economic illiterates. Those who claimed that 165 million people who are insured through their employers “love their insurance companies” now look like clowns. The left has a real opportunity to expose these things and rethink what is possible. Ironically, most Democrats agree on the issues much more than Republicans do and yet are unable to build an effectual coalition. How did we end up with a candidate who represents almost none of the policies that the constituents want? Steve and Ryan analyze what went wrong with the presidential campaign and speculate on what the next steps might be. What will the left do to make sure this revolutionary moment turns into something serious and long-lasting? They look at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the “Squad.” Have their tactics changed? Will coalition-building be more effective than a more aggressive approach? For the first time, the left has been able to envision itself with an inexorable voice. Now we have to ask ourselves whether we are simply here to engage in the conversation or if we want real power. Ryan points out that historically the success of a third party is contingent upon one of the two main parties failing. The Whigs were torn apart by the issue of slavery. Ryan is unconvinced that big money and corporate power will rise to that level. People won’t fight over capitalism the way they fought over slavery. The conversation ranges from the very real threat of climate change to the very realistic depiction of contemporary dystopia in the film “Joker.” We’re not saying we have the answers, but you’ll certainly come away with a lot to think about. Ryan Grim is The Intercept’s D.C. Bureau Chief and author of the book “We’ve Got People: From Jesse Jackson to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the End of Big Money and the Rise of a Movement.” @RyanGrim on Twitter https://theintercept.com/staff/ryangrim/ https://strongarmpress.com/catalog/weve-got-people/

In this capacity, Ebonie serves as a conduit for information about what is happening in the halls of Congress, in the office and administration of the President, and United States Supreme Court. Moreover, she and her team work to educate lawmakers and other stakeholders on the challenges and opportunities facing communities, by advocating for more resources and polices that help invest and advance economic and social equality. Ebonie’s government affairs portfolio includes criminal justice, federal sentencing reform, ending racial profiling, equal employment protection, access to comprehensive healthcare, immigration, access to quality education, women’s rights, environmental justice, voting rights protection, housing, among other various issues that impact social and economic status, mobility, prosperity and empowerment of urban and under served communities. Prior to this role, she served as the Bureau’s Research and Policy Associate, analyzing legislation, drafts advocacy strategies, develops policy recommendations and monitors policy developments related to federal, state and local legislation while co-managing NAN’s Social Media. During her time at NAN she has helped organized several events and marches including coordinating NAN’s 2015 National Convention, NAN’s events in Baltimore, MD after the death of Freddie Gray, the Justice For All March in December 2014, NAN’s Legislative & Policy Conferences in 2015 and 2014, the National Action to Realize the Dream Rally and March in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington with over 200,000 people in attendance and Justice For Trayvon 100 City Vigil in Washington, D.C. both in 2013, just to name a few. Specific interests include political engagement, civil rights law, voter turnout, voter suppression, and identity group politics.   Resources   National Action Network News Roundup LGBTQ+ groups call on Facebook to take down false drug ads Several LGBTQ+ civil rights groups are calling on Facebook to take down an ad posted by lawyers apparently seeking to capitalize by spreading misinformation about Truvada for PrEP, which studies have shown helps reduce the risk of contracting HIV by 99%. According to groups including GLAAD, The Human Rights Campaign and other groups, the lawyers are inaccurately claiming the drug causes certain side effects, and the groups are concerned that the ad will discourage people from taking the drug. Pensacola hit by cyberattack In a Facebook post, The City of Pensacola, Florida reported that it was the victim of a cyberattack over the weekend and into Monday, which took down much of the city’s network, including its online payment system and city government emails. 311 service was also affected. Pensacola Mayor Grover Robertson said in a press conference that it was not known whether the cyberattack was connected to last week’s shooting at the Pensacola Naval Station in which 3 people were killed and many others injured.  TikTok lawsuits Legal troubles are mounting for Chinese social media company TikTok, whose growth has been outpacing that of established social media platforms, including Facebook. Bytedance, TikTok’s parent company, was already under federal investigation into potential ties to the Chinese government. Plaintiffs filed two lawsuits last week, one of which was settled. But a second lawsuit brought against ByteDance in the Northern District of California by a student alleges that TikTok is transferring private user data to the Chinese government. Separately, German digital rights and digital culture blog NetzPolitik reported that TikTok has been blocking users with disabilities including overweight users and users with intellectual disabilities. Netzpolitik also reports that TikTok has been nbanning gay users as well. The company purports to ban these users so that they won’t be subjected to bullying. Google Ads staff files retaliation complaint against Google The National Labor Relations Board filed a complaint last Tuesday claiming the company fired several employees in retaliation for their having joined or supported a labor group and protesting the company’s terms and conditions of employment. Reports also state that Google’s rules prevent employees from organizing.

Why do American workers face some of the weakest labor protections - and consequently some of the highest inequality - in the developed world? To find out, Briahna turns to Dr. Lane Windham, a Georgetown professor and author of Knocking on Labor’s Door, and Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at the Intercept and author of the new book We’ve Got People. Dr. Windham tells a story of workers, including women and people of color, fighting for access to union rights on the eve of the country’s turn toward neoliberalism.
